In response to market demand, Principles of Taxation Advanced Strategies was developed to provide coverage of advanced tax topics. This book is ideal for students who studied Principles of Taxation for Business and Investment Planning in their introductory course. The two textbooks provide an integrated two-semester sequence of topics that represent a complete educational package for tax students. Nevertheless, Advanced Strategies is written in a self-contained manner. While its approach is consistent with Principles, the technical content builds on knowledge that students should know from their introductory tax course, regardless of the textbook used. Advanced Strategies explores the tax consequences of many sophisticated business, financial, and personal wealth-planning transactions. Each transaction is presented in an economic or legal context, and the nontax motives of the transacting parties are examined before the tax issues are identified. The discussion of tax issues emphasizes the development and implementation of strategies to make transactions as tax efficient as possible to all parties involved. Many of the tax strategies are analyzed in terms of their impact on net cash flows and on the income statements and balance sheets of the transacting parties.

Dry, Overpriced, Adequate Information.......2007-04-26

Like many textbooks, this one is rather dry. Sometimes it seems that there must be some special training course that authors for textbooks must complete to learn how to be so uninteresting. Also, like virtually all college texts, it is extremely overpriced. The textbook industry seems like a great big scam. It is always cranking out new books with relatively little new information but great big price tags.

The text is adequate. The material it contains is accurate and understandable.

If you need this book, I recommend finding a used copy.

Horrible Reading.......2005-04-21

My teacher assigned this book for my Labor Relations course and I wish he picked out a better book. The definitions are awful and you have to read them like 3 times until you fully understand what information the book is trying to provide. There was one part that really made me think that this book was thrown together in a couple of minutes. One sentence in this book stated that, "Southwest airlines was not unionized." My aviation management teacher saw something wrong with this statement because Southwest is heavily unionized. I think the author had a particular issue in his life and was trying to smurf it off in his book. This book is definately not for beginning students, unless you have time to decifer what the author is trying to say..... I could talk more about how terrible this book is, but I think you get the point
P.S. There were some really bad run on sentences in this book

One of the worst textbooks around.......2005-03-28

Normally I don't have problems reading the texts schools use but this one is the worst book I've ever had to read. My instructor provided outlines of each chapter that were provided by the author. Without those I would not have been able to make heads or tails of this book.The author needs to ake this book less dry and more learning friendly.

Dry Reading.......2003-01-27

Sometimes books can't help but to cover dry material. This book does not excell past being extremely dry. The book is well documented, thorough, and comprehensive. The eight edition is aesthically pleasing, but still does not seem to achieve the ability to make itself an easy read. I would highly recommend another book for this study, or using this one as background information for study.

Top ten classical but nowadays incomplete review of group theory in Physics.......2007-03-20

The book of Lipkin has become a classical reference in group theoretical methods in physics, and is one of the most valuable reviews at the time of the establishment of the Gell-Mann-Ne'eman octet model. Divided into seven chapters and various later written appendixes, this work was originally thought as a comprehensive introduction to the unitary symmetry. This has been achieved in an impressive way, as shows the careful development of the topics and successive refinements. The su(3) symmetry is deduced naturally starting from the annihilation-creation operator formalism employed for the nucleon, and introducing the needed tools step by step. The (1966) more relevant groups SU(3), SU(4), SU(6) and SU(12) groups are analyzed in some detail, as well as some low rank symplectic groups and various subgroups intervening in the state labeling problem, such as the Wigner supermultiplet model. The author makes a self-contained presentation of the combinatorial technique of Young diagrams, which is inspired in the milestone work of M. Hammermesh, but presented here with astonishing simplicity to be applied by the reader without requiring a deep theoretical background.
A quite interesting section is devoted to the experimental predictions obtained from the octet model, like the classical example of the negative hyperon, discovered by Barnes et al. following the theoretical model. In all, this book shows the situation of the global internal symmetries in the 60s.
There is however one surprising fact about the book. In spite of the title, the concept of Lie group is nowhere defined adequately through the book. Although it is commonly understood that the group is meant when working with the corresponding Lie algebra, this can mislead some readers. Also the (informal) definition of Lie algebra given in equation (1.15) on page ten is false, or at least incomplete. A set of operators with some bracket (either of bosonic or fermionic type) defines a Lie algebra only if it is closed with respect to this brackets and additionally satisfies the Jacobi identity. None of this is found in the definition given in the book. To "satisfy commutation relations similar to those of angular momentum operators" is definitively not sufficient for higher rank algebras. I agree that this minor detail is irrelevant for the rest of the book, because the used operators obviously define a Lie algebra, but this can also lead to confusion, since apparently any arbitrary collection of operators would have the same property.

Although this book has aged quite well and remains an important reference, it is no more adequate for those who want an actualized overview of the classification of particles. There are obvious reasons for this, as the non-covered topics correspond to concepts or models that were developed later than the publication of the book. One example is the attribute color (around 1973), introduced to explain some remaining difficulties. This absence obviously extends to QCD (Quantum Chromodynamics). Also the unified theories and the model SU(5) of Georgi-Glashow (1974) are not covered, as well as the symmetry broken down from this group to the reductive group SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1), or the resulting proton decay. Such important absences, easily detected by the expert, are not immediate for the beginner. However, there is no doubt that this book is an excellent introduction to the specific problems of group theory applied to particle physics. In any case, in order to have a larger comprehension of the topic, the text must be completed with the reading of more modern or detailed monographs. Good complements to the book of Lipkin containing later developments and theories would be, for example, the work of Ne'eman [Symétries jauge et variétés de groupe, PUM, Montréal, 1979], the book of Georgi [Lie algebras in particle physics, Perseus Books, Reading, 1982] or the encyclopedic work of Cornwell [Group theory in physics, Academic Press, San Diego, 1984, volume 2].

I-spin, U-spin, V all spin for I-spin.......2004-11-14

This book is still a very useful resource, nearly four decades after it was first published.

And that's the case even if you aren't exactly a pedestrian. This is the Truth about Lie groups!

While this book is very readable as it takes you through isospin, SU(3), commutation rules, symmetry breaking, the three-dimensional harmonic oscillator, and creation and annihilation operators, the most valuable part is the use of Young diagrams to construct multiplets for SU(3), SU(4), SU(6), and SU(12).

That is, suppose you are taking a course on elementary particles. And you are using some standard text such as Halzen and Martin (also a book that has aged very well). Anyway, you get to page 62 or so and that book tells you that the best way to construct the SU(3) multiplets is to use Young tableaux. But that book doesn't tell you how to use them. This one does.

If you are learning about elementary particles, you can go through this book in a day or two. And you'll be glad you did.

5 stars for the original poetry, 1 star for the translations.......2006-12-01

Rilke is just about my favourite poet... a true master. In the German, his verse is just sublime.

These translations, however, are shockingly bad. Not only does the translator completely ignore (or distort) some of the key images, he invents new ones for no apparent reason. Mitchell seems to think he is there to improve on the original. He doesn't.

If you don't read German, you should only buy this to read Mitchell's verse. You won't be getting Rilke's.

Lush, Alive and Vivid Addition to Your Rilke Collection.......2006-01-29

I am a passionate, ardent admirer of Rilke so
before I even opened this book I knew I would
be delighted because of its sheer weight and size.

Oh, YES! I thought to myself.

And then I opened it - and the very first selection
is Rilke's evocative poem, "I live my life in
Widening Circles" with the German on one page
and the English on the facing page.

I don't even speak German - but I love looking
at Rilke's original words - just LOOKING at them
elevates me. I also think that the side-by-side
translation says something of translater Stephen
Mitchell's love for the original.

I also enjoyed the Selected Prose. In reading it
I felt like I was stepping into Rilke's den for
a chat and either strong coffee or a cocktail.

This would be an excellent introduction to Rilke
or a fine compliment to anyone's Rilke Library.

poetry from the soul.......2004-12-02

I recently discovered Rilke, and am much the better for it - his craft with words literally gives one goosebumps. The poetry portion of _Ahead of All Parting_ is dual language, so readers of German can enjoy the original as well as Mitchell's translations. The book also contains copious notes about many of the poems (when they were written, what was going on in Rilke's life) as well as a section of his published and unpublished prose, which I found almost as vivid and beautiful as his poetry. The book itself is also physically beautiful - the pages are delicate, further adding to the sensusousness of the reading experience.

eloquent and thought provoking.......2004-06-03

ahead of all parting is a book that i treasure above all others. after reading a friends copy, i immediately ran to the bookstore that same night, and paid full price for it. something i rarely do, by the way. rilke is one of the most eloquent and beautiful writers that i know of. his poetry is some of the most thought provoking and uplifting that i have ever read. he saw things and felt things differently than the average person, and in turn used that to build his poetry and prose. mitchell is the best english translator for rilke's work, it's not perfect, but it's not bad. i have nothing but praise for rainer maria rilke. for all poetry lovers out there, i definately recommend you pick up a copy of this book, you will not regret it.

Suspicious Translation.......2004-02-22

The three stars I give this book are more for Rilke than for his rather poor translator.

I first became suspicious of Stephen Mitchell when I noticed some rather careless mistakes in this book (for instance, translating the German word for Moon into sun).

But I was no longer suprised by these flaws when I noticed some other works that Mitchell has translated:
the Bhagavad-Gita
The Book of Job
The Gospel
The Tao-Te-Ching

I suppose it is theoretically possible for there to exist an individual that is so immensely talented with languages that he is capable of translating adequately texts from Sanskrit, Hebrew, Ancient Greek, Classical Chinese, and German.... But I don't think Mitchell is that individual.

That being said, the poetics of the translation are very nice and the poems to feel pretty close to Rilke. However, to do this (whom I consider the most profound poet to ever take up a pen) author justice, I am just going to have to learn German for myself
