solid coverage of the science and engineering.......2006-01-01
The Ratners explain nanotechnology in a way readily accessible to a general audience. The book tries to suggest what might be realistically achievable in a few years. There are some preliminary results described. Like an improved stain resistant trousers. But these are really early years. It is true that if you focus on the progress made in the book, then there might be some disappointment.
However, the authors make a plausible case that future progress can yield much more. Naturally, the book stresses how new weapons might come into being, based on nanotech. Some of this you might regard as wildly speculative, while other possibilities might seem well within the reach of a few more years of effort.
A useful topic raised is Moore's so-called Second Law. That the cost of a semiconductor fab doubles with each new generation of fabs. This spells the end of Moore's First Law within a decade. Hence, the book positions a nanotech approach as a technological discontinuity as a necessary shift in order for computer hardware to keep improving beyond then.
The science and engineering aspects of nanotech are solidly covered by the book. It deserves to be widely read; especially by policymakers.
Hot Author Review:.......2005-12-13
Dan Ratner: A man with brains and one hot body! He's got it all! I have had the pleasure of meeting this young and "yummy" hunk after the release of his book. I must say, his photo in the book doesn't do him justice. Ladies, you really have to see this hunk in person! If you are ever in the Chicago area, I would seriously advise you to go.
You can tell he works out by his incredible bulging muscles. Oh, yeah! What a physique! Is this guy for real or just a fantasy? Gotta wipe that drool off your lips, Ladies. *smack* Oh, I'd love to feel those arms for myself. His body, from what I could see, gets an "A" rating here!!
His personality rating is an "A" rating as well. He is so well mannered and is a pleasure to converse with. Quite refreshing to meet such a man. I would certainly love a date with this fine young author over a nice old fashion candle-lit dinner. His mannerism is a definite "A+" rating here!
Unfortunately, my meeting with Mr. Dan Ratner was not long enough to give an extensive review, although, I hope our next meet will be.
Anyway, if you like brains and brawn, I'd definitely recommend this author!
Bound for the Discount Rack.......2004-04-04
I'm glad I got this as a gift as I certaily wouldn't have paid for it. If you want to read it take my advice and wait a year. It's bound to end up in the dollar bin, and you're bound to find dozens of used copies showing up on amazon.
Save your money.......2004-02-08
Save your money. The book is light on science and specifics and seems to spend a lot of time on things that do not seem to be related to either nanotechnology or homeland security. For example, they talk about and have a picture of nanotechnology-enhanced stain resistant pants from Eddie Bauer. If your looking for the latest on nanotech, better to read Smalltimes.

Book Description
Just as in the era of great achievements by scientists such as Newton and Gauss, the mathematical theory of geodesy is continuing the tradition of producing exciting theoretical results, but today the advances are due to the great technological push in the era of satellites for earth observations and large computers for calculations. Every four years a symposium on methodological matters documents this ongoing development in many related underlying areas such as estimation theory, stochastic modelling, inverse problems, and satellite-positioning global-reference systems. This book presents developments in geodesy and related sciences, including applied mathematics, among which are many new results of high intellectual value to help readers stay on top of the latest happenings in the field.

Book Description
A renewed interest in aliphatic polyesters has resulted in developing materials important in the biomedical and ecological fields. Mainly materials such as PLA and PCL homopolymers have so far been used in most applications. There are many other monomers which can be used. Different molecular structures give a wider range of physical properties as well as the possibility of regulating the degradation rate. By using different types of initiators and catalysts, ring-opening polymerization of lactones and lactides provides macromolecules with advanced molecular architectures. In the future, new degradable polymers should be able to participate in the metabolism of nature. Some examples of novel polymers with inherent environmentally favorable properties such as renewability and degradability and a series of interesting monomers found in the metabolisms and cycles of nature are given.

Book Description
The rapid growth of wavelet applications-speech compression and analysis, image compression and enhancement, and removing noise from audio and images-has created an explosion of activity in creating a theory of wavelet analysis and applying it to a wide variety of scientific and engineering problems. It becomes important, then, that engineers and scientists have a working understanding of wavelets. Until now, however, the study of wavelets has been beyond the mathematical grasp of many who need this understanding. Most treatments of the subject involve ideas from functional analysis, harmonic analysis, and other difficult mathematical techniques. Wavelets and their Scientific Applications offers an introduction to wavelet analysis without mathematical rigor, requiring only algebra and some very basic calculus. The author stresses applications, and explains, using elementary algebra, how wavelet methods are typically applied in analyzing digital data. Software is available for download through CRC's Website that will enable recording, playing, and modifying sound files, and includes a facility for displaying, printing and modifying IEEE gray field images. Unlike other software packages for wavelet analysis, the author developed this attractive, easy-to-use software without the need for a C++ compiler or MATLABä. Throughout the book the author provides numerous suggestions for computer experiments designed to challenge and enhance the reader's comprehension and provide practice in applying the concepts learned. Wavelets and their Scientific Applications thus provides the perfect vehicle for understanding wavelets and their uses. It provides a fast-track learning opportunity for scientists and mathematicians unfamiliar with wavelet concepts and applications, and it is ideal for anyone without an extensive mathematical background.
Customer Reviews:
My school must not have been very good.......2007-09-05
Mathematicians may find the "elementary algebra" in this book to be free of "mathematic rigor," but stupid people like me who went to public school will probably feel otherwise after struggling through the first page. I'm still looking for the wavelet equivalent of the excellent "Who is Fourier?"; this book is definitely not it, and it's definitely not worth $40.
A Primer on Wavelets and Their Scientific Applications.......2006-08-22
This book is an excellent one to learn the fundamental concepts of the wavelet transform. I recommend to study this book before starting or while studying another more mathematical text.
A rip-off.......2006-05-31
This is undoubtedly the bigest rip off of the century - I am sorry that I have spent this exorbitant amount of money on such rubbish. Here we have a book that purports to be some kid of advanced mathematics - NO WAY - this is not mathematics the publisher should be castigated ferociously. The author has no concept of what mathematics is all about he is obviously some kind of engineer and thinks that the use of mathematics is mathematics he is of course very wrong. For example, consider his definition of "scalar product" (p11), he says this is is an operation between two "signals". Sorry the scalar product is an operation between two elements of any vector space. As a mathematician I found this treatise offensive and puerile. It should have had the title "Signal Theory" but that might not have had the readership. Give me back my money!!
A little pedantic at times, but generally quite good...........2006-03-20
At times, particularly at the beginning, the author seems almost patronizing, but generally the tone and level of the book is just where it should be for what seeks to be a primer. However, it is unfortunate that one of the primary functions in the software is not more fully described in the text; it is only described as the method of preparing many of the examples.
Overall, an excellent start for somebody who knows little or nothing about wavelets.
From zero to doing transforms in 138 pages.......2006-01-27
What I really like about this book is that it starts straight off discussing wavelets. Lots of other books on the topic start by introducing Linear Filters, Fourier Transforms, etc., and don't get to Wavelets until 100 pages into the book.
I also have to say that the author's writing style is almost shockingly clear, allowing the reader to make rapid progress through the material. The extensive use of examples also helps illuminate how to perform the steps discussed in the text.
In terms of coverage, this book is almost entirely about Discrete Wavelet Transforms. The third chapter devotes two sections to Fourier transforms, and the final chapter devotes two sections to continuous wavelet transforms. Many other books spend half or more of their space discussing these topics. For readers interested in using wavelets for analysis of data sampled by computer, this emphasis on discrete transforms won't pose any problem at all - that is exactly the type of transform required.
In terms of the book's contents, my only complaint is that there isn't enough discussion on which of the various families of wavelets to use for a given task. For example, some differences between the Daubechies and the Coif wavelets are provided, but in many of the examples, the author uses one of these without discussing why it performs better than the alternatives.
Also, readers should be aware that the website listed in the book as the place from which to download the author's free wavelet analysis software is no longer available. Instead, I found a link to the FAWAVE software on the authors own personal page at http://www.uwec.edu/walkerjs/
Overall, I strongly recommend this book to readers new to the field of wavelets, to those that have been previously frustrated by overly thorough texts on the topic, and even to those classifying themselves as math-phobic. It is a clear, practical introduction to a powerful field of data analysis.

Book Description
In a dark comedy of errors, Iris Murdoch portrays the mischief wrought by Julius, a cynical intellectual who decides to demonstrate through a Machiavellian experiment how easily loving couples, caring friends, and devoted siblings can betray their loyalties. As puppet master, Julius artfully plays on the human tendency to embrace drama and intrigue and to prefer the distraction of confrontations to the difficult effort of communicating openly and honestly.
Customer Reviews:
A fairly hollow effort.......2006-06-24
Meant as a satire on the late 60s intelligentsia, A FAIRLY HONOURABLE DEFEAT is not of Murdoch's better efforts. The quick pace at which she produced her novels during her lifetime meant that not all of them are up to the level of THE BELL or tHE TIME OF THE ANGELS, and this work seems far too unnatural and manipulated. The work is largely a study of what Murdoch sees as a human predilection for acting against one's best interests, but the characters are so dislikeable to begin with, and behave with no logical explanation, that the whole book rings very falesly. The central character of Julius, in particular, is so obviously such a monster that it is unbelievable the other characters would want to be within ten feet of him, much less invite him to their homes and act on his recommendations; we are often told he is a man of great charm, but we never see his charm in action. And the historical "explanation" for his otherwise motiveless malignancy offered at the end of the novel seems thoroughly unconvincing.
A bitter, rather nasty book.......2006-04-07
Of course Iris meant it to be bitter and nasty, a satire on upper middle class life and love in London in the 70's. I found most of the characters rang hollow. And Tallis' squalor and his annoying father seemed artificial and overdone. Having said that it was an interesting read. Not one of her better novels. Dare I mention that it does not compare favorably with some of the better Muriel Spark novels?
Good Against Evil and the Consolations of Love........2004-02-19
Iris Murdoch's novels cannot be fully appreciated nor savored in all of their richness without some awareness of her philosophical concerns.
This is the story of Morgan, whose return to London after a love affair in America with the sinister, mysterious and seductive (in every sense of the word) "Julius," brings her to the home of her sister Hilda and that sister's husband, Rupert. Their troubled son Peter makes an appearance; and Morgan also encounters her good but estranged husband, Tallis; and a lively circle of friends appears as well, including the gay couple Simon and Axel.
But then Julius returns. His seemingly quiet entry into the lives of these flawed, but oh-so human people, wreaks disaster and tragedy.
Dame Iris underscores and dramatizes her concern with the nature of evil as the expression of the human tendency to be seduced by the glamor of power and intelligence into abdicating simple and obvious duties of humanity. She illustrates her notion of love as a kind of powerful attention (or Kantian "Achtung") and an immersion in the reality of the moment and the Other; and goodness as the absence of selfish immersion in fantasy and escape or "muddle," and involvement in "concern" (Heidegger) or "engagement" (Sartre) with the pain of others.
This is a brilliant and wise book.
A more than fairly satisfying read.......2003-09-11
Brilliant! This novel has everything I look for in a truly great book: complex characters, deft plotting, luminous prose, and profound insight into the human condition. Iris Murdoch knew what it was to be human. She understood our aspirations and longings, our blind spots, our frailties, and our capacities for love and betrayal. She's the only writer I know of who can hold her reader's rapt attention throughout a novel in which the action consists almost entirely of dialogue between the various characters. (If you think that sounds boring, believe me, it's anything but!) In this age of high-speed internet, cable tv, and the unending pursuit of distraction, that's no small feat!
I recommend this novel unreservedly. I started reading Iris Murdoch a couple of months ago and since then, have read no other fiction. This is the sixth of her novels I've read and my favorite to date. If, like me, you want fiction to illuminate the human condition and to give you more than an enjoyable way to pass a few hours, then give yourself to Murdoch. She's deepened my thought, sharpened my wit, and made me more compassionate, while holding me spellbound and fascinated at every turn.
language and life.......2003-03-15
Here Murdoch explores the complications that arise from the assumption that we are the heroes or heroines of our own life-dramas rather than part of a larger drama in which we are merely walk-on extras. A play within a play within a play is represented: Morgan dresses up as a girl dressed up as a boy, trapped in Julius's flat. Simon and Julius eavesdrop in a manner reminiscent of Jacobean revenge drama. Comic misunderstandings proliferate.
This book makes us think about how all our life -emotions, beliefs, obsessions..- is only a byproduct Language, or the lack of it. Isn't love really a result of Communication; and isnt Hate the result of inability to communicate? Can a witty nihilistic Teaser wreck the lives of innocent people just by dismantling their emotions verbally?
Most often, our difficulties to discern what we want from life are really just language problems, a tragic lack of skill that results in the impossibility to master knowledge about our actions and their consequences.
The reader is left with a vision, both tragic and comic, of what happens when we try to fit other people into preordained roles our own dramas. Only those who try to communicate openly are redeemed from the dishonour of contemporary life. As Murdoch suggests, the only true defeat is being deceived by words.
