Useful General Help.......2004-02-10
This book will be helpful to people in various categories. Firstly, those wondering whether a career as sceintific researcher would suit them and what it would entail, secondly those charged with providing suitable career advice and, thirdly, existing researchers needing assistance or reassurance in connection with their work and prospects. As a result, I can see this book in many libraries, including high school and university libraries.
On the other hand, given the rapid nature of change in funding (and this book considers only the USA) and research practices, it would be wrong to imagine that it would be able to provide up to date and accurate information on every issue with which a researcher is likely to be concerned. It should be seen as a general guide rather than a specific one. It will be useful for my students here in Thailand since the career of researcher is not so well documented or even developed here and many aspire to study and work in western countries without much idea of what it would entail.
John Walsh, Mahidol University International College
Excerpt of a review.......2004-01-24
"[T]he book takes the guesswork out of an academic life and environment. ... I highly recommend this book to every graduate student so that they are prepared for the academic calling and can make the most of it. I would further recommend this book to all established academicians so that they could have a better perspective on a graduate student, fellow, and a starting assistant professor and encourage them to become good members of the academic society. The book is priced such that a graduate student can afford to buy one, or perhaps their mentor may be generous enough to gift one."
Kailash Gupta, NIAID, NIH
Little help here.......2004-01-20
Well, what can I say. It took a lot of deliberation before I decided to buy this book. I did get a recommendation from a colleague, but after reading some of the reviews, I was not so sure. Much of what the authors say is not just common sense, but almost trivial. I think the topic is also too general, trying to cover everything from a postdoc looking for a job, to an associate professor trying to get promoted to a full professor level.
What was particularly disappointing was the extremely abbreviated section on the process of getting a job. Granted that every university varies, but negotiating a position with good (access to) resources and support, good students and enough time to do research is probably the most critical stage of the whole process. Everything else is a direct result of this process. Yet disproportionately little time is spent on this subject. It is as if the authors assume everyone gets a job in one of the top ten universities, but at the same time they are still too confused about how to publish a paper, write/get a grant or interact with colleagues (junior and senior).
Focusing on NIH R01 as the only source of funding (granted this is intended for biomedical researchers), is also misguided. There are alternatives that researchers can explore, but many of them do not give as generous indirect costs as NIH or simply are smaller than your average NIH grant. So from your institution's point of view these grants do not really help you to get tenure, so maybe that is why the authors left them out.
Over all, this book really is not that helpful unless you are a complete beginner in this game. And then it is probably too early for you to worry about getting your R01 in Research Utopia U. I can think of better things to spend $40 on.
Will be useful for years to come.......2003-10-19
Finally, a book full of advice on the art of being an academic scientist! As a postdoc, I have already benefited from many of the sections, including the advice on grant writing, giving talks, and writing manuscripts. Also, the section on mentoring has helped me to be more efficient in directing the undergraduates working with me. I am sure I will consult this book many times in the future as I begin my job search and start my own lab. The book was fun to read as well as very practical. Definitely recommended.
Will prove ineffective.......2003-10-04
I was generous with just one star. In the real world of the stressful biomedical grant mill (Emory University being one such mill), this book will prove profoundly ineffective. And for several reasons. First, it is poorly conceived and written. Second, to my knowledge, Eckert has never been funded for a biomedical grant (in other words, her expertise is wishful thinking). Presently, she holds a staff position at the Emory School of Nursing.

A complete book.......2000-03-27
Well this book is really useful in the preparation of the exam.It gives you an overview of what is needed to review and the best part are the presence of the practice test. The natural sciences can seem easy at a first glance but when you haven't done that for years because you have done the practise part instead of the basic theory ,...well...we need to plunge back in time to improve once again our understanding of these sciences and it is clear that this book really helps the reader to achieve it.

Book Description
This book is the official history of the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT), which was built at Coonabarabran in New South Wales beginning in 1968; it came into operation in 1974. The telescope is part of the Anglo-Australian Observatory which provides facilities for research in optical astronomy for scientists from Britain and Australia. Between them, the authors of this book were all involved in different capacities throughout the development of the telescope. As such it gives a detailed and personal record of the scientific, administrative and political developments from the moment negotiations began to the present day. The AAT has been and continues to be an outstanding success and can lay claim to being the best instrumented telescope in the world with a very wide capability and high sensitivity.
Customer Reviews:
the definitive book.......2001-03-11
The AAT is nearly 25 years old, yet it still manages to hold its head high in international comparisons of effective optical telescopes. In terms of citations, the AAT ranks near the top in international terms.
The book is a history of the birth and construction of the telescope. It is the only popular acccount, and as such is an important source of information for anyone wanting to know about this trail-blazing telescope.
The book is a logical sequential account of the birth of the telescope. The writing suffers a little by being shared between three authors, some of whom are more accessible than others; but this is a minor quibble in what is otherwise an authoritative account of an important instrument.

Book Description
This volume provides an introduction to the geometry of manifolds equipped with additional structures connected with the notion of symmetry. The content is divided into five chapters. Chapter I presents the elements of differential geometry which are used in subsequent chapters. Part of the chapter is devoted to general topology, part to the theory of smooth manifolds, and the remaining sections deal with manifolds with additional structures. Chapter II is devoted to the basic notions of the theory of spaces. One of the main topics here is the realization of affinely connected symmetric spaces as totally geodesic submanifolds of Lie groups. In Chapter IV, the most important classes of vector bundles are constructed. This is carried out in terms of differential forms. The geometry of the Euler class is of special interest here. Chapter V presents some applications of the geometrical concepts discussed. In particular, an introduction to modern methods of integration of nonlinear differential equations is given, as well as considerations involving the theory of hydrodynamic-type Poisson brackets with connections to interesting algebraic structures.
For mathematicians and mathematical physicists wishing to obtain a good introduction to the geometry of manifolds. This volume can also be recommended as a supplementary graduate text.
Book Description
This letter is your death sentence. To avenge what you have done you will die. But what has Manno the pharmacist done? Nothing that he can think of. The next day he and his hunting companion are both dead. The police investigation is inconclusive. However, a modest high school teacher with a literary bent has noticed a clue that, he believes, will allow him to trace the killer. Patiently, methodically, he begins to untangle a web of erotic intrigue and political calculation. But the results of his amateur sleuthing are unexpected—and tragic. To Each His Own is one of the masterworks of the great Sicilian novelist Leonardo Sciascia—a gripping and unconventional detective story that is also an anatomy of a society founded on secrets, lies, collusion, and violence.
Customer Reviews:
"Justice is a steady and enduring will to render unto every one his right .......2007-08-06
The basic principles of right are: to live honorably, not to harm any other person, to render to each his own." Digest of the Emperor Justinian.
The Latin phrase "suum cuique tribuere" or "to each his own" is one of the three fundamental maxims of the law laid down by the Emperor Justinian. The peculiar interpretation of that phrase in Sciascia's native Sicily forms the emotional core of his brilliant "To Each His Own."
"To Each His Own" begins with a double-murder. A local pharmacist, Manno, receives a death threat in the mail, compiled with words and letters cut and pasted from a newspaper. The pharmacist laughs it off. He considers the letter to be a joke and although these threats are usually taken seriously in his town, Manno leads a blameless life and simply cannot believe anyone intends him harm. So he goes off hunting the next day with his friend Dr. Roscio and, without further ado, both Manno and Roscio are shot dead in the woods.
A police investigation follows but it is doomed to go nowhere. Sciascia paints a very explicit portrait of a society in which everyone knows (or suspects) everything but says nothing, certainly not to the local police. The general consensus (on the surface) seems to be that Manno was killed by a jealous husband and Roscio was an innocent bystander. The matter would have ended there but for the curious intercession of Professor Laurana. Laurana is a history and Italian teacher at the local liceo (high school). He walks into the pharmacy where the police are reading the anonymous letter and quickly spots a clue. The police dismiss his information out of hand. Laurana, however, driven by what appears to be no more than a desire to solve a puzzle, decides to follow up on the clue. In short order he seems to have solved the mystery. Laurana is oblivious to the fact that his musings on the crime pose more of a threat to the murderers than a typical local police investigation. Events play out to their natural conclusion, and in Sciascia's Sicily natural conclusions are not quite so neat and tidy as say in Agatha Christie's parlor room England.
The enjoyment to be found in reading "To Each His Own" is not the mystery itself. The fact of the matter is that, for Sciascia, solving a mystery doesn't require great insight. Rather, it simply requires a willingness to actually see that which is self-evident. As blind as Laurana may be to the danger he puts himself in, he can see well enough to understand why Manno and Roscio were murdered and who murdered them. Laurana's problem is not that he knows more than anyone else in town, Sciascia makes it clear that the actual events do not seem a surprise to anyone. No, Laurana's problem is that unlike everyone else in town, he doesn't bother to hide his knowledge.
Sciascia's writing is both precise and enjoyable. He seems to have a keen eye and affection for his native place, but that affection does not diminish, but likely enhances, the despair he feels for a culture in which silence is golden and in which "to each his own" does not bring to mind Roman traditions of equity but, rather, the critical importance of minding ones own business. "To Each His Own" is a cynical, but highly-entertaining piece or work.
Highly recommended. L. Fleisig
Il ciascuno il suo.......2006-11-14
Having read "To Each His Own" (or rather, "Il ciascuno il suo") twice, once in Italian and once in English, I find that each time I found new interesting nuances.
Rich, ambiguous characters fill the novel and leaves one wondering who is considered intelligent and who is considered an idiot in Sicilian terms. It also leaves one wondering what exactly is the crime: the killer or the one that deems himself the investigator? Is it the one who deals in politics or the one breaking the law of "omerta"?The novel explores the mafiosi as an institution, as a family, what it is in the government, the church, the peasant village.
Sciascia's novel is a page-turner for both those who want an easy read detective thriller and also for those wanting to dig deeper into the story's message.
Well written mystery.......2006-11-13
This book is a well written mystery. The author sets the crime out before you right at the beginning and gives many leads for you to try and draw your own conclusions. His style of writting is very different, but very interesting. It is the type of book that you must continue to read to find out what the ending is about.
"The Impunity Coefficient".......2006-01-17
Leonardo Sciascia's TO EACH IS OWN is a postmodern mystery in which the quest is everything and the solution is nowhere to be found. As W. S. di Piero writes in his excellent introduction to this edition, "Each [of Sciascia's major novels] is a genre piece, a detective story, but of an odd kind: when all clues are gathered and aligned, they lead to a wrong solution; or the mystery proves insoluble because practically everyone involved, except the investigator, is duplicitous."
The setting is a Sicily in which the threat of death from organized crime is omnipresent. A local pharmacist named Manno receives an anonymous death threat and laughs it off: He was never involved in politics or philandering, so why should anyone want to kill him? The next day, he goes hunting with his good friend Dr Roscio. Neither of them returns alive.
Enter the unlikely investigator: Professor Laurana, middle-aged virgin, a high-school literature teacher who lives with his mother. He begins a series of investigations that seem to wind up in dead ends at every turn. Most of his queries involve Dr Roscio's powerful uncle and the young, very attractive widow. Without coming to any decisive conclusion, Laurana's investigation itself is decisively concluded, whereupon the last few chapters provide an amusingly ironic coda to the action.
At the beginning of Chapter 7, Sciascia provides a concise statement of his method:
"The corollary of all the detective novels to which a goodly share of mankind repairs for refreshment specifies that a crime present its investigators with a picture, the material and, so to speak, stylistic elements of which, if meticulously assembled and analyzed, permit a sure solution. In actuality, however, the situation is different. The coefficients of impunity and error are high not because, or not only and not always because, the investigators are men of small intelligence but because the clues a crime offers are usually utterly inadequate. A crime, that is to say, which is planned or committed by people who have every interest in working to keep the impunity coefficient high."
This is just one of many excellent recent offerings of New York Review Books (NYRB). Like others in the series, it is nicely edited and translated and with an excellent introduction. I look forward to reading the other Sciascia titles under the NYRB imprint.
Subtle Work from a Sicilian Master.......2004-11-25
This tale has the punch of a good "Sopranos" episode, one that is filled with subtlety and atmosphere. Sciascia said, according to the introduction, "I don't have a great creative imagination.... All my books are the story of a series of historical delusions seen in the light of the present." Here the delusion is multifold: the delusion of Professor Laurana as he stumbles his way into dangerous territory merely because of his diffident intellectual curiosity; the delusion of the entire Sicilian community as it keeps its deadly secrets to itself, thereby perpetuating them; and the delusion of love as a wife deludes her husband and then, in the name of love, abets deadly acts. There are probably other delusions as well, too subtle for me. In the light of the present, a small band of old timers meet secretly to review reality and agree as to the mistakes the victims sadly made. All the characters in this disturbing and yet satisfying tale are drawn with a craftsman's fine brush requiring just a few telling strokes to present the whole picture. Professor Laurana, a quiet, intelligent man of modest habits, has all our sympathy as he makes a very human mistake. And the cronies that reside in the town gossip about one another almost as if directed by a cultural imperative, harking me back to my own Sicilian relatives. Although this work is horrifying, it also satisfies because of its fine writing, atmosphere, and well-drawn plot and characters. Bravo!
I thank New York Review Books for bringing out this edition and will be reading other Sciascia works very shortly.

Book Description
Described by the Chicago Tribune as a "latter-day version of Dickens' Bleak House," Bankruptcy: A Feast for Lawyers is a shattering indictment of bankruptcy law by a CEO who lived through the experience of Chapter 11. Author Sol Stein exposes a system that is supposed to provide an opportunity for troubled companies to reorganize, but kills more than 70% of the businesses that take refuge in it while enriching legions of lawyers. In the nightmare world of Chapter 11, the gainers are seldom the creditors or the debtor company, but rather the bankruptcy bar, impeached in this book by their own conduct and the condemnation of their ethical brethren. Besides his own experience, the author draws examples from diverse industries -- trucking, food, real estate, oil, and publishing.
