A guide for novices of Quicken software, Sams Teach Yourself Quicken Deluxe 99 is composed of 24 one-hour lessons that start with the basics and bring you to Quicken wizardry status. The first four lessons show you how to set up your Quicken checkbook and record your transactions. The second section of the book covers more-detailed tasks, such as setting reminders to pay monthly bills, tracking loan payments, and exporting and importing data with Quicken. The two middle sections help you prepare your household budget and track your investments with the software. The last six hours are devoted to learning how to run various reports on your financial data and to using online resources for gathering information and paying bills. Along the way, lessons provide tips on shortcuts, cautions on possible pitfalls, and additional notes on difficult concepts. A detachable chart of shortcut keys that you can post by your computer is included in the inside cover. Illustrated with adequate screen shots, this guide gives you the exact amount of handholding that you need, without being condescending. --Cristina Vaamonde

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I found it clear, concise, easy to understand and follow.......1999-02-17

Learning Quicken seemed really daunting. But this book made it easy--by covering all the basic financial activities and guiding me literally step by step through each activity. The book is logically organized, and includes great graphics, summaries, and troubleshooting tips. I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Covers the basics, but not much in depth analysis.......1999-01-24

I recently purchased Quicken Deluxe 99 and found it to be very difficult to set up anything but the most simple investments. I was hoping this book would explain how to handle more complex investment setups and related investment tracking, but I was disappointed. It seems to cover the same areas as the on-line help, but little beyond that.

            Book Description

Over the last ten years, The State of the World's Children report from UNICEF has become the best-known and most widely used of all United Nations publications. Published in over thirty languages, it is distributed to media in all countries at year's end, and has become both a record and a
catalyst of the movement to promote the kind of development that most benefits today's children--and tomorrow's world.
The 1992 report describes what it would take and cost to meet the basic needs of all the world's children--for food and water, health care and education--by the end of the century. Following the 1990 World Summit for Children, at which the largest gathering in history of heads of state
promised a new deal for children in the decade ahead, the report sets out the action now needed--by the governments and peoples of both rich and poor nations--if that promise is to be kept.

                  Book Description

The last few years saw the development of a plethora of experiments and surveys probing the cosmological parameters. The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), the Supernovae (SN) searches and galaxy cluster data, namely via X-rays and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect, are among the most prolific giving detailed information about the geometry, age and structure formation of the Universe.

The program of the WS-HCP workshop was aimed at highlighting the scientific achievements and to discuss the new environment of "precision cosmology" within these three probes. The objective was to analyse different observational strategies, common problems namely foregrounds, and to assess the impact of observational uncertainties in the determination of key cosmological parameters which describe the primordial universe and the large scale structure formation mechanism.

                  Product Description

Modern Optical Spectroscopy gives clear explanations of the theory of optical spectroscopic phenomena and shows how these ideas are used in modern molecular and cellular biophysics and biochemistry. The topics covered include electronic and vibrational absorption, fluorescence, resonance energy transfer, exciton interactions, circular dichroism, coherence and dephasing, ultrafast pump-probe and photon-echo spectroscopy, single-molecule and fluorescence-correlation spectroscopy, Raman scattering, and multiphoton absorption.

The explanations are based on time-dependent quantum mechanics and are sufficiently thorough and detailed to be useful for people working in the field. Because it starts from first principles, the text also will be accessible to readers with little prior training in quantum mechanics. Extra details and sidelights are set off in boxes. Numerous figures illustrate the theoretical expressions or explain experimental techniques.

5 out of 5 stars 20/20 Vision For Theoretical Treatment of Optical Spectroscopy.......2007-03-19

As a biochemist who uses electronic spectroscopy as a tool for solving biochemical problems I have come to appreciate certain deficiencies in my academic training. Aspects of quantum mechanics and molecular orbital theory that are not normally a core part of biochemistry curricula are clearly important for understanding and interpreting experimental findings obtained by spectroscopic methods such as ultraviolet absorbance and circular dichroism. Perhaps the most useful text that I've found to help me come to grips with the subject is the 1962 classic "Theory and Applications of Ultraviolet Spectroscopy," by Jaffé and Orchin. Here the focus is on organic chemistry, but William W. Parson has now provided a deeper treatment of the theory that draws examples from biophysics and biochemistry. Parson has filled in the many gaps that appear to have emerged in the discipline in the past 45 years. For me it has been a revelation to see explanations from first principles for the origins of the Rosenfeld equation and the point-dipole approximation, for example. Parson makes an interesting connection between Förster and exciton theories as variations on a common theme of excited state delocalization, but at greater and shorter distances, respectively. One criticism is that the discussion of the exciton effect seems to be limited entirely to the degenerate case where chromophores having identical energies interact. I would like to have seen the non-degenerate case discussed as Harada and Nakanishi treated it previously in Chapter 10 of their treatise on circular dichroism. I have not had a chance to read Parson's entire book, but what I have consulted has been gripping and easy to comprehend - the appendices on vectors, matrices, and Fourier transforms have certainly helped me to overcome some of my own deficiencies with the mathematics. Ultimately, Parson strives to create a physical picture that mathematics only serves to summarize, which is precisely what I want to know. I suspect that "Modern Optical Spectroscopy" will become an essential reference for experimentalists who seek to be quantitative in interpreting their observations derived from a wide range of electronic spectroscopic methods.

                    Book Description

Felix Klein, a great geometer of the nineteenth century, rediscovered an idea from Hindu mythology in mathematics: the heaven of Indra in which the whole Universe was mirrored in each pearl in a net of pearls. Practically impossible to represent by hand, this idea barely existed outside the imagination, until the 1980s when the authors embarked on the first computer investigation of Klein's vision. In this extraordinary book they explore the path from some basic mathematical ideas to the simple algorithms that create delicate fractal filigrees, most appearing in print for the first time. Step-by-step instructions for writing computer programs allow beginners to generate the images.

The mathematician Felix Klein (1849-1925) made some great discoveries that can now be well understood by using computer graphics. Felix Klein is known for his work in non-euclidean geometry and for his work on the connections between geometry and group theory.

Some fairly simple mathematical ideas and algorithms reveal an endless universe of fractals. The book includes step-by-step instructions for writing computer programs allowing readers to perform further explorations.

5 out of 5 stars How mathematics can be used to create physical beauty.......2003-08-11

As a long-time reviewer of mathematics books, there was a time when I grew very bored with books written for the general mathematical audience. For years, it seemed mandatory that all contain a section on basic fractals and the Mandelbrot and Julia sets. It was not that the topics were not interesting, I found them fascinating, it was just that the explanations were all so similar that it became tedious to read them. Therefore, when I looked at the coverage of this book, I felt a pang of negative nostalgia, thinking that what I would find would be a repeat of what I had read so many times.
Well, I am happy to report that my pang was unfounded. The first chapter covers the language of symmetry, and some of the enormous number of forms in which it appears, which sets the stage for the fractal operations. A large part of the book is devoted to the patterns that are simultaneously symmetrical under two Mobius maps, which makes the analysis of fractals in this book different from what I have seen in others. Indra's necklace is a limit set formed by a chain of tangent circles, and is quite beautiful.
Very high quality figures are heavily used throughout the book to demonstrate the results of the operations. They are also beautiful, and in my opinion, some are works of art. Other mathematical operations that are used in the generation of the results are: matrix operations, group theory, non-Euclidean geometry, continued fractions, formal language theory, tiling of surfaces and function theory. The incorporation of so many different areas of mathematics really spices up the book, and makes it more enjoyable for a wider audience of mathematicians. It cannot be said that it is written for a general audience, the level of mathematics is beyond the non-mathematician, and one probably has to have the skill set of a junior or senior undergraduate math major in order to understand the explanations.
Mathematical results are very beautiful in their internal consistency and the power of the ideas. In this book, you also see some of the physical beauty that can be created by applying mathematics in the appropriate way

5 out of 5 stars Discrete groups made easy.......2002-10-04

[this review shall replace the already existing one]

Indras pearls provides a very well-made introduction to the basics of the theory of discrete groups acting on the complex plane. The whole discussion on the related limit sets had been accomplished in such a hand-by-hand method.
The reader starts from complex numbers and after he is led into the deepest concepts: Möbius trasformations, limit sets of discrete groups (Schottky, Fuchsian, ...).
These limit sets are related to another interesting topic in today maths: complex dynamics on the Riemann sphere (Julia sets, ...).
As known, computer experiments had been fundamental for supporting complex dynamics and the successive success of this latter topic helped to promote and increase the interests for discrete groups too: in fact this book evinces already strong interest in the visualization and in the study of the properties of such limit sets since '80s, due to the efforts of the same authors.
One of the major points of attraction in Indra pearls is that all the theory had been helped by displaying a lot of detailed and colorful pictures which, aside the historical biography of the mathematicians that contributed to this theory, set this book as one of the masterpieces in this topic, for his lucid
and fresh approach to basic concepts.
In addition, the presence of amusing comic-strips, explaining some topological concepts on manifolds (for example), guarantees the easy-learning for the reader and also the approach, as imaginaed and completely accomplished by the authors. In this direction, it is clear how passion had been squandered by authors.
The goal has been reached: finding an easy way to introduce the harsch theory of discrete groups.
Interested readers will be rewarded and also excited.
No doubts: this book strikes and it will be a corner-stone for present and future.

Indras pearls provides a very well-made introduction to the basics of the theory of discontinuous groups acting on the complex plane. The whole discussion about limit sets had been accomplished in such a hand-by-hand method.
That is, the reader starts from complex numbers and, after, he is taken into deepest concepts as Möbius trasformations and so to discontinuous groups (Schottky, Fuchsian, ...).
Limit sets of kleinian groups are related to another interesting topic in today maths: complex dynamics on the Riemann sphere (Julia sets, ...). The success of this latter topic helped to increase the interests for discontinuous groups too. Indra pearls also witnesses and resumes the last twenty years of efforts spent for studying the properties of the limit sets.

Although Samuel Beckett (1906-1989) is best-known for his novels, such as the Molloy series, and his still frequently-performed plays like Waiting for Godot and Endgame, he is rarely thought of as a writer of short fiction and prose. Yet he wrote short works devotedly throughout his life; many critics count various Beckett short stories as masterpieces of the form, central to an appreciation of the writer's oeuvre. The Complete Short Prose, 1929-1989, as the title suggests, collects all of the Nobel Prize-winner's shorter works, such as "First Love," and "The Lost Ones."

                    Book Description

Nobel Prize winner Samuel Beckett was one of the most profoundly original writers of the 20th century. He gave expression to the anguish and isolation of the individual consciousness with a purity and minimalism that have altered the shape of world literature. A tremendously influential poet and dramatist, Beckett spoke of his prose fiction as the "important writing," the medium in which he distilled his ideas most powerfully. Here, for the first time, his short prose is gathered in a definitive, complete volume by leading Beckett scholar S. E. Gontarski.

I love short stories, in fact I need think we need to read them more often in this harried society...but this collection...

Wow...it is my cure for insomnia. I have been trying to read finish this novel for 2 years now, and have finally come to the realization that I simply will never finish it because- it is my cure for insomnia.

                    5 out of 5 stars A tale of progression.......2006-12-01

The great thing about this collection, aside from seeing Beckett work his wonders on the short form--something for which he is underappreciated--is seeing him evolve as a writer over the years. I loved the way you could trace his investment, or lack thereof, in plot and the standard niceties of "story" over the course of the book. He is a master, truly, and one should take time to appreciate his shorter and lesser known works. Much joy waits therein.

5 out of 5 stars Beckett: Still Relevant.......2004-04-19

The Complete Short Prose 1929-1989 is one of the great books to appear in the last ten years. I grew up reading parts in anthology and thin Grove Press editions. At last many of these sparse texts parading around as novels have come together under one cover. Stories like "First Love" and "The End" are among Beckett's strongest works, and "Texts for Nothing" are extremely complex and perhaps the most moving monolgues I know, for they often bring tears to my eyes. Beautiful stuff! You need some sort of literary standard other than Dave Eggers or Cormac McCarthy: I'll take Beckett any day!

Beckett had a big influence on European writing, but his influence is almost invisible on American letters. Sometimes you hear about writers being influenced by Kundera, Borges, or Kafka, but Beckett has eluded the art of writing here, with the exception of play writing. That's unfortunate, because his trilogy of novels and much of his short texts are some of the most intense, beautiful writing in the past half-century. Edward Dahlberg often talked about this sort of great writing: "It was to take me many years to realize that one has to be very lucky to write one intelligence sentence."

After reading the definitive introduction by the writer S. E. Gontarski, I am convinced that Beckett is the creator of "Spoken Word." Take that to the bank! In works such as "Fizzles" and "The Lost Ones" Beckett modulates a disembodied voice that is stripped away of all mimesis, yet it is the same interior voice that permeates all his fiction. Haunting, profound, chilling. I can think of no equal to Beckett's prose writing, except maybe Dahlberg himself. Only if today's hack writing was half as good as Beckett and Dahlberg....

People should read The Complete Short Prose and Three Novels like they read the Bible. Do it now! I know why these books are worth reading! As Dahlberg once said, "What need had I of the sour pedants of humid syntax, or of courses in pedagogy, canonized illiteracy. I saw that anybody who had read twelve good books knew more than a doctor of philosophy." Nevermind these fads, these 20 under 40, and so on. Nevermind.

                    5 out of 5 stars Beckett's little-known nonfiction.......1999-09-23

While Beckett's works certainly contain their share of angst, there is more to his work than that, as this collection reminds us. The last work in this collection is a nonfiction essay that Beckett wrote for Irish radio just after World War II called "The Capital of the Ruins." Beckett's subject was a field hospital in the French town of St. Lo that Irish citizens had helped to staff (and where he himself had worked as an interpreter). While the prose is unmistakably Beckett (particularly the self-deprecating humor--at one point he refers to the essay as a "circumlocution"), the optimism of trying to convince his people that they had helped their fellow human beings survive a terrible war more easily is not what we expect from him. Also typical is a wonderful Biblical allusion to the Book of Isaiah and its great swords-and-plowshares metaphor, which he cleverly adapts to modern times. There is a lot of wonderful fiction in this volume (my favorite is "The Cliff," a short meditation, possibly on a preserved skull), but the non-fiction is not to be neglected, and reveals a side of this writer not often seen or considered.

1 out of 5 stars BECKETT'S MAIN THEME AND SYMPTOM.......1998-12-07

The Unnameable explains himself as aporetic [being unable to act] and ephectic [being unable to make a decision]. From 1929, in "Che Sciagura", to 1989 Beckett's prose becomes more and more aporetic. From "Lessness" in 1970 to Ill Seen Ill Said in 1981 to Worstword Ho in 1983, aporia dominates the prose style and the thematic content. All of Beckett's tiny, bizarre stories - "Imagination Dead Imagine" [one paragraph], "The Lost Ones", "Enough", "Ping", Fizzles [eight one-paragraph stories] - they all contain catatonic characters, paralyzed by mental ambivalence. "The plain reader be damned," declared the young Samuel Beckett in an essay in Transition, the Parisian journal where some of his first poetry and prose appeared. Plain readers have been grappling with Beckett's thorny, modernist work ever since. Some of the stories collected in Samuel Beckett: The Complete Short Prose, 1929-1989 and its companion volume Nohow On: Company, Ill Seen Ill Said, Worstward Ho: Three Novels seem almost approachable, while such exercises in oddity as the 13 Texts for Nothing seem more impenetrable by the day.

Simply a matter of attaining Dubliners and the Portrait and the Wake, and facing the game's up. This gives you, eventually, Fizzle 7, the pure pivoting word "in its place" (etc., Eliot), the Pope Marcellus Mass of modern letters, for example.

4 out of 5 stars Exile and descent: a prose-world as dark as what it conceals.......1997-10-16

--When my life-routine is in decay only Samuel Beckett can suffice. While the poorest of Beckett's prose offer only that sunken cold-in-the-stomach feeling of literary indigestion (this may after all be the intended effect), the better segments deliver a richer vein of orchestral inflection, a chalk-and-charcoal tone-poetry of sorts, a lush groggy cipher-state dreaming with angst. The 1946 sequence of nouvelles that are the blessing of this collection ("First Love" "The Expelled" "The Calmative" "The End") are especially vital to this reader, which is to say that they reread the best.
--As one progresses through this volume, from the Joycean exuberance of "Assumption" and "Sedendo et Quiescendo", to the ashen zero-time of "Texts for Nothing" and "All Strange Away", to the bleached naked endurance of "Lessness" and "Stirrings Still", Beckett's narration seems to sink further and further into the mud, a breaking down of readerly expectation into a prose-world as dark as what it conceals.
--I recommend this anthology to patient readers in search of their own zero-hour, and as a startling companion-piece to the major novels and plays.
