The best "common sense" book on management I've seen........1998-08-24

This handbook was my best friend during some very difficult management years. I would often refer to it when dealing with some sticky problem, and I was always impressed with the "common sense" approach. The brief scenarios and the page or two devoted to the problem was all I ever had time for. I give it to all of my colleagues who are becoming managers for the first time.

EXCELLENT reference tool for those in management!.......1997-06-11

Having been in management for more than 10 years, I found this book highly informative and wise in its counsel. Each of the seventeen chapters focuses on one area of troubleshooting. Within each troubleshooting area, there are up to nine scenarios in which one may choose which best fits one's problem situation. And, then, after each scenario, possible causes and cures along with "something to think about" are provided. In addition to all of this information -- and this is a real plus -- each scenario is labled a "shark" or an "elephant" or a "wolf"! This enables you, the manager, to prioritize your problems and when to troubleshoot them. For example, if a problem is labled a "shark," it requires your total attention right now (p. viii)! As evidenced by my comments, I strongly recommend this book for every manager's reference shelf

As a non-feminist, I found this book incredibly helpful!.......1999-06-14

I've been in management for 7 years. This is the first book I've found that offered practical information -- not just surface rhetoric -- about how to manage as a woman. Montgomery doesn't try to fit all women into one box, but instead suggests how to peel off the layers of a situation to get to the real problem. As a woman manager, I'm still in the minority at my office. This book made me feel more empowered. I find myself referring to this book frequently before I react to a situation. I've learned to be more open in managing, and patient in dealing with the daily pressures of a manager. I'd recommend this book to both my female and male colleagues.

Read this if you are a woman manager looking for excuses........1999-03-16

If you are a woman looking for a practical guide to help you be an effective supervisor/manager in today's work world, look someplace else. This book once again puts women in the position of being a victim. Montgomery writes about ways to compensate because we are women, which is to make us victims or to say we are otherwise handicapped and need special considerations. We aren't. And we don't. I was disappointed in Montgomery's book. There are some traits women have accepted as fact down through the years that are not inherent, just learned behavior. I was hoping Montgomery's book would identify some of those traits and talk about how to overcome them, not justify their continued use. I will not recommend this book to anyone. Which is sad because I want to support the efforts any woman makes to get a handle on this issue.

From the supplier: The job of a property manager charged with reviving a non-performing property can be likened to the job of a surgeon assigned to the emergency room. As with doctors, the first thing that property managers must do is to examine the physical condition of the 'patient.' They must make sure that the property is bright, cheerful, clean and orderly. After the physical examination, the managers must then prescribe a treatment. This involves ensuring that the building is operating smoothly. The next step is checking for vital signs which, for real estate managers, means making the property market-ready. Clearing the property's financial arteries is also important so that it would have the healthy flow of cash needed for survival and growth. To check for emotional stability, managers should try to find out how residents feel about their community. While busy with the property's sick aspects, managers should make sure that the healthy aspects do not decline.

Knowledge of vapour-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data is necessary for the proper understanding of a large number of industrial and laboratory processes. Such data allow a grasp of the thermodynamic behaviour of mixtures, the study of intermolecular interactions and enable insight into the molecular nature of mixtures. They are also a basis for the development of theoretical thermodynamic models. Scientists and engineers will obviously benefit from a careful collection of the existing data.

This book aims to provide a reliable collection of such data. Original data have been gathered from around 450 literature sources, including 80 journals and a number of dissertations and diploma papers. Previously unpublished data from the Thermodynamic Department of the former Merseburg-University and the author's own data sets are included.

The VLE-data are divided into three chapters:

1. Vapour pressures of binary polymer solutions (or solvent activities) - Chapter 2

2. Segment-molar excess Gibbs free energies of binary polymer solutions (in the form of Redlich-Kister parameters) - Chapter 3

3. Weight fraction Henry-constants for gases and vapours in molten polymers (from inverse gas-liquid chromatography measurements) - Chapter 4.

A short introduction to the experimental methods and data reduction is included as Chapter 1. There are indexes for the polymers and solvents cited.

Book Description

During the Eocene Epoch some 42 million years ago--about 20 million years after the demise of the dinosaurs--the area that today is the Lake Casa Blanca International State Park near Laredo was a tropical forest/coastal mangrove environment. Excavations at the site by Dr. James Westgate and his Lamar University students have uncovered fossils of 29 extinct mammal species and about as many species of crocodiles, turtles, sharks, rays, and giant water snakes. In this book, he reconstructs a clear picture of prehistoric life at Lake Casa Blanca, illustrated with drawings and paintings by Abby Salazar, a recent earth science graduate now pursuing a second degree in art.

Great fossil discovery story!.......2000-01-19

This is a great story about 15 years of excavating one of the fossil communities which replaced the dinosaur species on the Texas coast after their extinction. Four-toed horses, primates, rhinos, sharks, palms, this fossil site has them all!

This is simply the best analysis of the "Carnivalesque" and is a valuable preface to Rabelais' novel itself. Bakhtin's book alerts the reader of Rabelais to his (Rabelais') masterful use of language and explores the sources of medieval popular culture that served his purposes. I have enjoyed Rabelais with much deeper understanding having first read Bakhtin.

Bakhtin and Rabelais both negotiated cultural minefields to produce their works. Both deserve to be more widely read.

Take your time with this academic book and you will be rewarded. It rediscovers the spirit of the Medieval carnival. The tradition stemmed from ancient Greek and Rome and its function was to give a vent to people's death fear and anger over social injustice. "Everything was allowed" and for a short period of time the social taboos were erased. Fools and prostitutes were "crowned" to embody Kings, Queens, Pope, saints, monks and nunns. And the chosen ones were mocked, ridiculed, assailed and beaten and stoned and "dethrowned" and "impeached."

Is this tradition dead today? Think twice -- think David Letterman, Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien and especially Howard Stern, and you will be amazed to find astoundig parallels between the past and modern times.

A book for those who are seriously interested in Bakhtin's ideas: seeing how they develop from the idea of carnival and folk culture to the polyphonous, heteroglossic and dialogic imagination in his other works.

Bakhtin celebrates the renaissance of the Russian Revolution.......1999-09-15

Mikhail Bakhtin first began "Rabelais and His World" in 1917 during the heady days of the Russian Revolution. Like some of the colleges of today, the University of St. Petersburg at the height of the Revolution boasted a flexible curriculum and encouraged free thought among its students. While the gunfire echoed in the streets, Bakhtin and his colleagues gathered to declare the Russian Revolution the "Third Renaissance". This comparison between the Italian Renaissance and the Russian Revolution inspired him to begin his dissertation on Rabelais. The events of the Revolution swept everyone up into the societal transitions. No one could just be a bystander. From this all-encompassing mood of social interaction arose Bakhtin's concept of the "theater without footlights". As for the significance of the individual in the Carnivalesque one has only to look to the Fool. Bakhtin considered his first reading of Friedrich Nietzsche an epiphany. The great German philosopher remained one of Bakhtin's most important influences throughout his writing career. The Fool, as an extension of the carnival, is the ultimate Nietzschean character. Able to move between worlds, he demonstrates the power of the individual to transcend societal norms. Bakhtin states, "the images of folk culture are absolutely fearless and communicate this fearlessness to all". The Fool is representative of this utopian ideal personified in the individual.
