Good book.......2003-05-08

I used this book in the last two weeks before the exam...some of the questions were kinda deceptive - they appeared easier than they actually were. But the selling point for me was that it was a full exam so I simulated the exam conditions to give me some practice with my timing etc. I used this book together with the NMS review book and the Kaplan Q-book, and I did enough questions to get me a 97 on the exam.

The worst test book I have seen.......2002-09-06

This is the worst test book I've seen. It is a waste of money, but more important, a waste of time. The only thing similar to the step 2 exam is the number of questions divided in 8 blocks. The questions are poorly written and the explanations are lame. If you are preparing for the step 2, try the Mock exam by Brochert or the Q book from Kaplan (or even better the simulated step 2 CD-ROM).

2000 Edition is Excellent.......2000-12-19

This book is GOOD practice test for Step 2. It's set up just like the Step 2 exam with 8 blocks of 50 questions. Every question is a clinical vignette and the format of the questions is very typical of Step 2, i.e., "What is the diagnosis?" and "What is the next step?" It's definitely worth the the $25 that amazon is selling it for.

Apollo versus Marsyas in Knut Hamsun's Pan.......2007-09-11

There is little to add to Mr. McMahon's astonishing review of this novel. However, I think there's a worthwhile point to make on the symbolism here. The character Lt. Glahn is Pan, a symbolic equivalent of the satyr Marsyas. In Greek mythology, the god Apollo skins Marsyas alive after beating him in a music competition. In Hamsun's book, the wealthy merchant Mr. Mack functions as Glahn's nemesis, as Apollo, and torments him in various ways throughout the book (won't spoil too much as this is Amazon.com.)

However, in this angle on the myth, the Apollonian vs. Marsyan/Dionysian, the satyr bites back, hurting Mr. Mack and his daughter Edvarda (Glahn's lover) with various schemings. Although though Glahn suffers the greater helping of the grief, it calls into question how much those who live by logic/Apollonian standards suffer due to their oversight and brutal intolerance of the emotional, spontaneous forces which Glahn/Pan has mastered. In other words, if goat-men were so inconsequential, why would sun-gods have to torture them? Thou dost protest too much, Apollo, and I wonder if the punishment is disproportionate to the goat man's crime.

A splendid glimpse of Norwegian nature and culture in the late 1800's.......2006-10-07

The book is about lieutenant Glahn that spends a summer in a hunting-cabin in Northern-Norway, living off what he can hunt and generally enjoying nature. He becomes something of a typical Germanic man, at ease in nature, but feeling estranged by the meaninglessness of the modern "West". The descriptions of the nature in coastal Northern-Norway in summertime are quite famous and magnificent. He takes long strolls with his dog, and sleeps out in the wild when he feels like it. He is slowly dragged into the local bourgeois life of the tiny town nearby, and falls in love with the lovely Kielland. The book then takes many strange twists and turns, and I won't reveal much of it. The book is one of his very best, and therefore naturally some of the best literature of Norway. The fact that it's written by one of the few Scandinavian "right-wing" anti-modern conservatives makes it even more of a classic. I don't think you'll find anyone that has read Hamsun that will disagree when I say that this is one of his 5 best books. Highly recommended!

and what is human nature? the wild? the cultured?.......2002-07-01

Pan begins as a nature story - detailed, lush, knowledgeable descriptions of nature, of living a solitary existence, of feeding off the forest and sea. Phrases such as "there was a sweet sulphurous smell from the old leaves rotting in the woods" lull the reader into an expectation of a pastoral romance novel. This is anything but. It is, rather, an exploration of the relationship of the solitary Lt. Glahn with two women in particular and society in general. Lt. Glahn is socially inept and impulsive. The two women? One is servile and unavailable; the other, more interested in the power of the chase than the capture. The resulting story is an intriguing study of human emotions, of motivation and of the honesty of self-revelation. An excellent book by an excellent author.

Hamsun Skewers Noble Savage Myth.......2002-03-01

Pan is a short, terse, novel about a reclusive "wild" man, Lieutenant Thomas Glahn, gifted with sexual charisma who idealizes nature and himself but is blind to his arrested development, his cruelty, and his enslavement to his own compulsive actions, which, as the novel progresses, have tragic consequences. By showing the disparity between Glahn's perception of himself, which is rather romantic and lofty, with the "other" Glahn, the uncouth, abrasive one who clashes with other people, Knut Hamsun succeeds in writing an ambiguous, mysterious fable about the conflict between solitude and civilization, and how the "self" cannot be defined in its isolated state.

For an updated theme of the man being taken over by his inner beast, check out James Lasdun's modern masterpiece The Horned Man.

Bronte Meets Woolf And It Works Well.......2001-07-24

I sat up all night, reading the whole story. This tale about a lonely, self-destructive man in Norway, who happens to meet a young girl and starts to love her, looks like "Wuthering Heights" written by Virginia Woolf. Introspective, but not too much "stream of consciousness" that might make you bored. Basically a love story and tradegy, it is an absorbing story; sometimes very violent, but surely it touches the innermost recess of most unaccountable aspects of humans'

heart: passion of love and hate. Still, beware; sometimes its violence sounds like "Takeshi" films and sexual nuance is always there, though much less than DH Lawrence.

Love in the Wilderness.......2004-02-12

In Greek mythology, Pan, the God of wilderness, is depicted as having a human torso and head with a goat's horns, ears and legs. This book centers around the story of one Lieutenant Glahn's sojourn to the Norwegian countryside as he lives in a remote cabin on the edge of the forest. Not much there you might think, but this book is less visible action than of the currents in the mind.

This isn't to say that what does occur is boring-in fact some of the acts are almost overwhelming at the end-but the action, like Hamsun's more famous novel Hunger, ultimately is an inward happening. It is when Glahn falls for local heartthrob Edvarda that the book moves away from its meditative beginnings and into the intensity of feeling found in Hunger. Soon it is this love-embraced, unrequited, and scorned-that consumes everything in the vain, but intensely perceptive Lieutenant Glahn.

An under-read masterpiece.......2003-12-11

Hardly anyone I know has read Pan, even though I keep recommending it. Do yourself a favor and check this book out. It's a quick read, and very much worth the time.

Pan starts out like a fairy tale and for the first 50 pages or so, I thought that not much would happen. It seemed like one of those beautifully written books which is short on plot. But let me assure you that Pan has plenty of plot, and a whole lot happens by the end of this book.

I have since read other novels by Hamsun and to me, Pan is his finest. I could barely slog my way through Growth of the Soil, for which Hamsun won the Nobel Prize in 1920. Hunger, his first novel, is enjoyable but a little aimless. Mysteries (his second) is even more enjoyable but still fairly aimless, and Victoria (his fourth) is a beautiful love story with not much plot.

But Pan really moved me and has become one of my favorite novels of all time. You may have heard that Hamsun was a Nazi sympathizer in his later years. I'm not sure if he was anti-Semitic or just attracted to the agrarian ideals of the Nazi Party, and perhaps a tool of Nazi propangandists. But don't let his ignominious later years stop you from reading this wonderful novel.

Difficult read.......2003-03-28

I personally preferred his other works much more. Pan seemed to be really hard to read. It has some really beautiful prose with lyrical descriptions of the forests, but even though its a very short novel, I couldn't finish it.'Mysteries', 'Growth of the soil', 'wayfarers' and 'Hunger' were much better !

Devastatingly Accurate Depiction of the Male Psyche.......2000-09-26

I wish I had read Hamsun when I was a teenager with wild emotions, but it's just as well that I read Pan at 29, as I'm now old enough to fully appreciate his work. Hamsun's insight into the male psyche is devastatingly accurate. At times I wanted to leap to my feet to say, "that's me! that's me he's writing about!!" Hamsun demonstrates how a love gone bad can destroy a man's mind.
