    5 out of 5 stars Best team-building book I've read.......2004-03-03

I first used this book about 7 years ago and have found the exercises to be so broad-based and useful that I believe they could be used in any size company from 3 employees to millions. I lost my book and couldn't remember the exact title, and it was worth paging through 3,000 random titles to find it and order it again!

I first used this manual about 8 years ago. Since then, I've used it many times. It is thorough, yet simple enough that it can be utilized with any group in any organization.

What is the sweetest compound? Where is the largest chemical plant? To what extent can chemical bonds be bent? How many tons of fertilizer are being produced worldwide? The answers to these questions and many others can be found in this well written informative kaleidoscope of top performances in chemistry. The excellent mixture of superlatives from research and industry makes the book very difficult to put down and will help chemical laymen as well as experts to gain a better insight into the wonders of chemistry, its immense efficiency, and significance for our day-to-day life.

"... this is a marvelous book... A focus on records ... is actually a wonderful way to engage the interest of the chemistry student and professional, and of the general public."
                Roald Hoffmann, Nobel Prize Winner

"This isn't a textbook, and it isn't a novel. Instead it is a source book for all chemists, giving us ideas we can use in teaching and in presentations, and it is also a book that should fascinate young students who want a feeling for the chemical world. Finally, ... it should serve as an inspiration to Beat That Record.?"

1 out of 5 stars Math Guide Dogs It........2006-05-06

Bought this book, looked through it, and decided to get rid of it. In less than a half hour of casual perusal, I found no fewer than 8 typos in the English text, and they were not subtle or obscure imperfections -- they were honking great cock-ups, the kind that fairly leaps off the page at you. Lazy, sloppy, indifferent production plainly characterizes the natural language part of the text, so how can anyone possibly have any faith in the quality of the rendering of the thousands of formulae, equations, functions, and other mathematical content? If OUP ever spends the few dollars needed to acquire a spell/grammar checker as well as a professional copy editor and then actually puts them to use, perhaps this mess of a book might become worthy of your money and attention, say by around the 4th edition or so. But until then, look elsewhere for your guide to math. Oh yes, and Oxford, both the Press and the University, should be ashamed of itself for their involvement in putting such shoddy goods on the market. It does them no credit whatsoever.

4 out of 5 stars thorough presentation .......2006-02-21

Zeidler has put together a thorough summation of maths ideas and formulae, in over 1200 pages. The book has basic formulae from high school geometry and trigonometry. From there, it goes on to describe ideas used widely in the sciences and engineering.

Fourier series and Fourier transforms are explained. Along with a host of other transforms. For physicists, you can find the definitions and tabulations of various functions - Bessel, Legendre. Of course, the Gaussian bell curve and the associated error function ubiquitous in statistics is present here.

                  A handy desk reference.

                  Book Description

Fractals: A User's Guide for the Natural Sciences explains Mandelbrot's fractal geometry and describes some of its applications in the natural world. Written to enable students and researchers to master the methods of this timely subject, the book steers a middle course between the formality of many papers in mathematics and the informality of picture-oriented books on fractals. It is both a logically developed text and a `fractals for users' handbook. Fractal geometry exploits a characteristic property of the real world self-similarity - to find simple rules for the assembly of complex natural objects. Beginning with the foundations of measurement in Euclidean geometry, the authors progress from analogues in the geometry of random fractals to illustrative applications spanning the natural sciences: the developmental biology of neurons and pancreatic islets; fluctuations of bird populations; patterns in vegetative ecosystems; and even earthquake models. The final section provides a toolbox of user-ready programs. This volume is an essential resource for all natural scientists interested in working with fractals.

4 out of 5 stars For mathematicians, not for beginners.......2007-01-07

The rise of fractal processes is the result of success and failure. It has been known for decades that continuous models were inadequate to simulate many phenomena. To paraphrase Benoit Mandelbrot, the father of fractals, "clouds are not spheres, mountains are not cones and trees are not lollipops." However, there were very few alternatives. Some early work on structures now recognized as fractal was done decades ago, but technical factors limited the scope. It was necessary for inexpensive computers and graphical devices to arise before fractals could truly be explored. The confluence of these two forces has led to a flood of work on fractals, the consequences of which will not be known for many years to come. However, it is clear that some knowledge of fractals is rapidly becoming a requirement in many disciplines, from physics to economics.
The authors here eschew a popular treatment of fractals, relying on mathematical explanations with few pictures. One immediately realizes that it is a scholarly work when a quick scan reveals that there are no color plates. Applications are used throughout. Earthquakes, pancreatic islets, temperature variations, rainfall data and vegetative ecosystems are some of the topics examined using fractals. But be prepared to perform some mathematics if you wish to understand.
And that is the outstanding feature of this book. There are a growing number of popular mathematics books that contain sections on fractals. Unfortunately, it is always more of the same. A description of the generation of the Mandelbrot and Julia sets, with color pictures. This book is designed to teach the working scientist the techniques needed to apply fractal models to their specific discipline. The mathematics is hard, complete and applicable. Listings of the many programs used to generate fractals are at the end of the book and the language is Turbo Pascal.
If your goal is to learn fractals for scientific applications, then this is the book for you. Otherwise, your best choice is one of the many popular books that use verbal explanations.

                  It's an odd book.

According to the book's review is in between the formality of many papers and a picture oriented book.

The first two lines of its table of contents are:

chapter. 1 Our view of nature page. 7... chapter. 2 Fractals and power law scaling 15...36

The chapter 1 is what any picture intended book on fractals has. The chapter 2, where the fun begins and basic concepts as "power law", "fractal dimension" are introduced is incomprehensible.

Nevertheless it seems to be an interesting book about applications of fractals. I'm talking about "Part III", page > 80 to 233 (the end).

It's curious and inconsistent book at the beginning: it talks to beginners in a way that is incomprehensible for a beginner!.

If you are a beginner in fractals as I am, you need another book!.

I have a couple Bantam (S4748) .75 cent paperbacks of this book and can remember first reading the book during study hall hours back in 1960. I was headed for the military after graduation so this book caught my reading interest. This book and one other I read back then, HAWAII by Michener, have never been out of my library.

I enjoyed this book, having read it several times down through the years, but still find it a little atypical of John Steinbeck. Though he wrote some other non-fictional works, this one written when a newspaper journalist is a bit different. However, during WWII many writers either headed to Hollywood to write in the war effort or went directly into the field with the military.

If a reader is interested in bomber crews in England or action reports from North Africa and Italy in 1943, this book will certainly hold your interest. His style is very literate while down to earth writing directly to the reader. As other reviewers have noted, this is very much a written view of the human side of WWII.

Though I no longer have anything else from Steinbeck, this book will always remain in my home library as one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Humanity behind the horror.......2003-07-11

Only Steinbeck can share the humanity behind the horror of war so eloquently, bringing you into the lives so profoundly affected by one of the darkest events in history! A chilling and essential historical chronicle!

4 out of 5 stars The Nuances of War.......2001-07-26

No author has a better eye and ear for details than John Steinbeck, and no author can record those details with more simple flowing eloquence.

Such is the case with the columns that were composed while Mr. Steinbeck was a war correspondent in the European Theatre of operations during World War Two.

The columns are not blow-by-blow accounts of great battles. They aren't closely focused on the physical and emotional plight of the soldier, as were the columns of Ernie Pyle.

Instead, they capture the auras and subtleties of both big and little events. "What it's like" is the best description of these slices of war life, nobody puts you there better, nobody captures the mood of a place more vividly.

What it's like to be one of thousands of soldiers stretch across the deck or house in the bowels of a troop carrier, destination unknown? What's it like to sit through an air raid during the blitz?

Or, a few columns take a lighter approach. In one, he salutes the incredible durability and dedication of Bob Hope and his USO shows. Another details the American soldier's skill in growing vegetable gardens. Another muses about the popularity of the German song "Lillie Marlene" among both Nazi and Allied troops.

And some columns delve into deeper territory, such as his theory as to why so few men who have been in battle talk about it.

Steinbeck did not spend a great deal of time as a war correspondent. The columns were cabled back to the states between June and December, 1943.

But each one is a little jewel of journalism. What else would you expect from America's finest writer?

4 out of 5 stars Mostly jaunty dispatches intended to be part of War Effort.......2001-02-21

I prefer short bursts of Steinbeck to his self-conscious "major: novels. I also think that his nonfiction is better than much of his fiction. His dispatches from England, Algiera, Italy, and PT-boats in the Mediterranean are often insightful, and frequently funny, especially the essay on souvenirs and the in the finale, a multi-part account of tricking a garrison into surrendering.

Steinbeck was very clear that he did not capture the essence of battle. Indeed, he wrote very clearly about the self-protective amnesia that descends after traumatic experiences (198-200).

What should have been the most important part of the book collecting his 1942-43 reporting, the introduction, seems to have been skipped by some readers. "We were all a part of the War Effort," Steinbeck recalled in 1958. "We went along with it, and not only that, we abetted it. Gradually it became a part of all of us that the truth about anything was automatically secret and that to trifle with it was to interfere with the War Effort. By this I don't mean that the correspondents were liars. They were not. In the pieces in this book everything set down happened. It is in the things not mentioned that the truth lies" Whether he was fully aware that he was producing propaganda when he filed the dispatches (which were censored as well as self-censored), Steinbeck was candid: "We edited ourselves much more than we were edited. We felt responsible to what was called the home front. There was a general feeling that unless the home front was carefully protected from the whole account of what war was like, it might panic. Also we felt we had to protect the armed services from criticism, or they might retire to their tents to sulk like Achilles. . . . Yes, we wrote only a part of the war, but at the time we believed, fervently believed, that it was the best thing to do. And perhaps that is why, when the war was over, novels and stories by ex-soldiers, like The Naked and the Dead, proved so shocking to a public which had been carefully protected from contact with the crazy hysterical mess". It is particularly unfortunate that Steinbeck's friend LBJ did not study these pages.

                  5 out of 5 stars Astonishing!.......2000-12-19

I've never been a huge Steinbeck follower - I've read a few of his works but I'm probably not as well-versed as I should be. That, however, will change after having recently read Once There Was A War.

This compilation of reports from England, North Africa and Italy in 1943 provides excellent descriptions of what life was really like during the war. There are very few recounts of battles and strategy. But there are stories of the people that were involved in the war - the souls behind the uniforms. Steinbeck does an excellent job showing that the war wasn't just made up of nameless soldiers - it was made up of people, each with personalities, each scared, each struggling to deal with life in such hostile conditions.

Aside from the historical value, these posts are amazingly well written. I have to admit I was reasonably surprised by the quality of writing. Steinbeck is an accomplished author, and on that I think everyone can agree, but to be able to put pieces like this together in London during the Blitz, in the deserts of North Africa or on a troop ship heading into the European theater is amazing to me.

Bottom line: I've got a new respect for John Steinbeck and an added appreciation and understanding of WWII. For both of those, I am grateful for having read this book.

                  Book Description

This is a masterly study of generalship in Napoleon's Grande Armée. Napoleon arguably had the greatest collection of military talent to ever serve one man working for him during the period 1800–15. The role of the Marshals of the Empire has been covered many times, and due credit is also given to them here; however, for the first time Kevin Kiley also examines in depth the contribution of the generals who never made that rank. Fifty-two general officers – some well known and some not – are examined using the battles they fought to illustrate just how valuable they were. From Marengo in 1800 to Ligny in 1815, both French victories and defeats are studied in meticulous detail, each chapter covering a battle fought and the generals who commanded them. Diverse source material has been consulted in the preparation of this volume, including after-action reports, memoirs and correspondence from officers including Senarmont, Eble, Drouot, Teste, Marmont, and Davout, as well as from lesser-known characters such as the artillerymen Boulart and Noël, and the Polish cavalryman Niegelewski, who led the final dash up the pass of Somosierra. Furthermore, those closest to Napoleon such as Fain and Marchand give their piece and provide invaluable information. Taken individually, this material paints a vivid picture of the Grande Armée and those who led it into fire. Taken as a whole, it provides an invaluable source and tells the remarkable story of the officers without whom Napoleon could never have achieved as much.

3 out of 5 stars Flawed but still interesting.......2007-08-01

This book has many excellent sections and an interesting style, introducing each chapter with a tactical vignette. These vignettes are the best parts of the book. The biographical sketches of the marshals are familiar, usually drawn from Elting or Esposito's works. Most disappointing however, Col. Kiley and his editor failed dismally to bring a tightly written book to the reader. Numerous redundant or paraphrased passages litter the book. One example from page 126 describing General Gudin is typical, "The next year he was chosen as chief of staff to St Cyr and was promoted to general of division in 1796. He was promoted to general of division in 1800." Well, which was it? These repetitious distractions keep the book from reaching its promise.
