Every industry has people who climb to the top. These successful professionals fill the top ten percent and reap all the rewards and glory why others just occupy the middle and the bottom. What is it that makes these folks successful where others are not. And beyond that top ten percent, what is it that makes the even more rare performer achieve the top one percent.
Dr. Charles Garfield's research of what makes "the new heroes of American Business" is a book that makes you think about success. We all want success, but it does not happen by accident. Garfield tells us that peak performers are not born, they are made. This is encouraging to all of us who want to accomplish more within our careers.

How to become a Peak Performer.......2004-07-07
I bought this book along with Dr. Garfield's first book Peak Performance after I read him in the Wall Street Journal. Since I was just starting a sales career at the time, I was eager to learn any trick or techniques that would help me.
I found it fascinating to learn of the toll booth attendant who was high energy and classified by Garfield as a "Peak Performer." Here was a guy having a ball and preparing for a career and then tells Dr. Garfield that he will share his secrets if Dr. Garfield takes him out to dinner at a place called Ernies, one of the highest of the high class restaurants in the Bay area and $100 a plate (this was in 1985!)
Dr. Garfield offers many similiar examples of "Peak Performers" in various fields of endeavor; athletes, business people, science and more.
I highly recommend Peak Performers to anyone who wants to be the best they can be.
Six Steps to being a Peak Performer.......2003-04-06
The book that outlines six aspects of peak performance: 1. A mission that motivates you 2. Real results in real time 3. Self management through self-mastery 4. Be a team builder and member 5. Course Correction and last, 6. Change management. He defines each one well and provides techniques such as visualization which aid in achieving each dimension of being a peak performer. The writing is very straightforward and logical, and avoids the hyperbole and slickness of many other self-improvement books, that are long on rah-rah advice but short on actual how-to steps for each critical dimension.
8 steps to success.......2000-04-07
I can not really articulate the logic and a reassurance this book gave me, with direction, honesty and fierce tactics, Peak Performers paves the road for success. If you are stuck in a job or career that is not right for you than this is the book for you.

Helpful Book for Understanding the Long-Term Care System.......2005-05-07
This was assigned as a text book and it was a good one. This text is packed with information on the various ways long-term care is delivered in the US today. After one reads this book they will understand the complexities of the long-term care health care system. Pratt discusses, funding, organizational structures, regulation, accreditation, and how the different types of long-term care fit into the whole system.
Each chapter builds to provide a complete picture of long-term care and understanding how all the parts fit together to make a whole system. This book is strongest is in its discussion of funding structures and how funding impacts service delivery. The strongest chapters were on quality and the various ways that quality is currently measured. Pratt points out that measuring process and systems as is currently and most commonly done does not always guarantee quality outcomes.
Chapter 2 which discusses the "ideal" long-term care health system and Appendix A: Criteria for Designing or Evaluating a Long-Term Care System are worth the price of this book because the information contained in these pages can assist long-term care administrators strengthen their facilities and service delivery and policy makers in understanding the complexities of long-term care systems.

I am a student studying health services. This book gives so much information on nursing administration, elder care, insurance, OBRA, etc. I found it very helpful with my class work, as well as, my own personal issues with my elderly parents. It's a book that's worth having in your home library because it has so much to offer schoolastically and personally.

By 1994 the total cost of health care in the United States approached $900 billion annually. In reaction to this explosive growth, the managed care industry, acting as the agent and administrator for government and health care payers, has taken an increasingly aggressive stance on controlling costs with a view toward hospitalization as the last option for mental health treatment. This new emphasis on cost containment demands effective and less costly alternatives to hospitalization.
Although most clinicians have grudgingly accepted the inevitability of both managed care and cost controls, the question remains: How can we develop a coherent mental health care system that controls costs while working effectively for both patients and clinicians? In Managing Care, Not Dollars, leading clinical experts argue that in order to survive, psychiatric institutions must offer a full range of services to large numbers of patients. Rather than concentrating on budget issues, clinicians and hospital administrators should use advances in treatment and technology to develop a coherent continuum of mental health care capable of delivering a wide variety of effective treatment options and alternatives to hospitalization.
This guide to the creation and use of the emerging continuum of care provides an in-depth examination of the individual components of seven state-of-the-art treatment programs including suitable patients, treatment goals, staffing, physical plant, and special adaptations for children and the elderly. It also offers decision-making tools for managers to use to adapt their existing programs to survive in this new era and reviews the various public policy issues arising out of the health care transformation. The introductory chapter provides the reader with basic information on the structure, and magnetic and viscous properties of ferrofluids. The bulk of this monograph is based on the author's own research activity and deals with ferrohydrodynamics, especially with the magnetoviscous effects. In particular, the author studies in detail the interparticle interactions so far often neglected but of great importance in concentrated ferrofluids. The basic theory and the most recent experimental findings are presented, making the book interesting reading for physicists or engineers interested in smart materials.
