Dubyah's new clothes.......2001-05-10

This excellent, accessible, and extremely well documented integration of the economics, administrative infrastructure and politics of the economy is a must read. Canterbery clearly deflates current politically correct talking point that Dubyah's skewed tax cut is in any meaningful way related to "capital formation". With only 5% of the transactions in the stock and bond market attributable to the "primary" capital raising markets (i.e. IPOs and new treasury debt) the churning of the remaining 95% of the secondary market is the "overhead" that's necessary to achieve "efficient" pricing for capital. That's like a shop owner who has to sustain $95 in operating overhead to keep his store open in order to make $5 in sales.

Witty, insightfully integrative and deadly accurate, this is a must read.

The Wall Street bull has transferred enoumous amounts of wealth from the bottom 95% to the top 5% of the population. The result is an economy that is producing goods and services at a rate that is well below its capacity to produce, reducing the standard of living of all but those few who are winning the speculative Wall Street lottery. The book is written in an engaging style with plenty of data to back up the claims. A very important book for a very crucial time in the economic history of the US.

TRULY a desk reference on 19 federal employment laws........2003-08-11

The first thing I worried about after incorporating my business and before hiring my first employees was all the employment laws I had to follow. I had been warned that there are many laws that I need to comply with proactively to ensure minimal problems in the future. I knew that starting a small business and making it succeed would be very hard and I didn't want to make it any harder by leaving myself open to legal liabilities. I originally had to look through several references trying to understand all the different employment laws till Nolo released this book last year and I felt a huge relief.

This book contains hundreds of pages of information that is very nicely organized. Here's why - there are 19 federal employment laws covered in this book (a chapter for each law) and the best chapter is the introductory chapter that explains how to use the book! It addresses the need of how to figure out which of the 19 federal employment laws apply in your business situation. It outlines the process you need to follow to establish this. This was one of the most difficult things for me. After reading this section, I systematically followed the instructions for each law and came up with a chart that uniquely applies to my business. It doesn't take more than a few hours to do this.

Each chapter also has selected portions of the actual law. The way you can distinguish the main chapter from these sections on the actual law is the smaller print. The only complaint I have against this book is the very small print used in printing these selected portions. Recently Nolo went from large books to small books (same material, just smaller font) and they didn't account for the smaller font becoming really small during this conversion! So if possible, look for the original larger books unless you have excellent vision and don't mind reading such small print. I guess Nolo took the old adage 'don't forget to read the small print' literally :-)

But seriously, this book is just fantastic. Each chapter is split into various meaningful sections. For example - there is the section on definitions, an overview section, an enforcement section, a section for employers, and a section for employees. There are also sections on the agencies charged with enforcement and compliance, and the state laws relating to the subject. These sections are further divided into record keeping tips, penalties, practical tips, etc.

This book keeps in mind the practical aspects of the law as applicable to the reader. It is saving us thousands of dollars that we might have had to spend otherwise in gaining the necessary knowledge of the various employment laws. By the way, there are also references in each chapter on where to obtain the relevant forms. In the past, I had spent countless hours trying to figure out where I could find the forms to download (it took a long time even with Google's help). But with this book's help, I spend just a few minutes to find these forms!

As usual, Nolo explains everything in plain English so you don't need a legal background to understand the law. This book is meant for both employees as well as employers. Pick up a copy of this book if you need any kind of information regarding employment law and you won't regret it. We haven't so good luck!

Unusual Doctors.......2000-10-15

Dr. McDermott chronicles the lives of twenty physicians that changed their careeres into something new. These physicians include Nicolas Copernicus, John Keats, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Stanley Livingston, and Rabelais. All of these men trained as physicians first then swithched careers. Dr. McDermott analyzes their times and their lives in an entertaining book on these fascinating individuals.

In the last few years there has been significant progress in the development of microfluidics and nanofluidics at the application as well as at the fundamental and simulation levels. This book provides a comprehensive summary of these changes describing fluid flow in micro and nano configurations. Where as in their previous book entitled Microflows: Fundamentals and Simulation the authors covered scales from one hundred nanometers to microns (and beyond), in this new book they discuss length scales from angstroms to microns (and beyond). While still maintaining the emphasis on fundamental concepts with a mix of semianalytical, experimental, and numerical results, this book outlines their relevance to modeling and analyzing functional devices.

The text has been divided into three main subject categories: gas flows; liquid flows; and simulation techniques. The majority of the completely new developments in this book are in liquid flows and simulation techniques chapters with modified information throughout the rest of the book.

This book can be used in a two-semester graduate course. Also, selected chapters can be used for a short course or an undergraduate-level course. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers in fluid mechanics, physics, and in electrical, mechanical and chemical engineering.

I believe this is an excellent reference for anyone interested in the field of microfluidics and nanofluidics. When I got the first edition, I was always thinking that the addition of a few chapters on nanoscale fluid flows would make this book a comprehensive monograph for people who have background in conventional fluid mechanics and want to understand the micron and submicron fluid flows phenomena. The authors have done this in the new edition "current edition". It is a well-organized book that makes it easy for reader, especially for graduate students who want to start their research in MEMS and NEMS and for professors who are looking for a reference for their course. The book covers all aspects of micro and nanoflows in terms of their characteristics, scaling effects, and methodologies and approaches that can be used for modified continuum and molecular simulations.

The Book on MicroFlows.......2002-06-07

I was fortunate enough to be given a chance to read the manuscript of this book about a year before it was published. I was looking for a source of general information on fluid issues in MEMS in order to acquaint myself with the subject. Even though many research papers are out there, the new reader to the field needs to be given a solid starting point. Being a well-written research monograph, this is that solid starting point for those who have a grasp of traditional fluid mechanics and want to enhance that understanding for research into MEMS devices and flows encountered at micron scale and below.
Now that the book is printed, I used it as the main source of reading for an Indep. Study course for a graduate student who started his PhD studies recently.
The book also provides a wealth of references that will assist the reader to get a deeper understanding of the specific subject.

Review of Microflows.......2002-02-12

This is an excellent book and I recommend this to any one interested in microfluidics, MEMS or nanotechnology. To my knowledge, this is the first book on microfluidics. The chapters on gas flows, electrokinetically driven liquid flows and on numerical methods for continuum and atomistic simulation are very interesting.

Amazing writer, great deal.......2007-02-19

This is short but packed with excellent short stories by Crane. I had to buy this for an english class but I've read it twice since then just because its so good. The first story takes place in Brooklyn and it seems very authentic even today. This is one of my favorite authors and I guess there's a reason they have you read him in school - to get you into reading!

New York Matters.......2003-06-23

Crane has a delightfully light style of writing that can take the deepest and most sorrowful of situations, and somehow bring them light. His, "Maggie: A Girl of the Streets," is a wonderful depiction of life for a 19th century girl in New York. "The Open Boat" puts you on the ship; you can naturally feel the narration and flow with him as he crashes against the waves. A wonderful read for any interested in American or New York literature.

Hard stories for hard times.......2001-06-26

Stephen Crane died at the early age of 29, but in his writing he shows what he'd come through in life. I think his style is mature and hardened up, due to a life spent in difficult times. In "The Blue Hotel", he depicts a brief, brutal and enigmatic moment in the lives of several residents and migrants in Nebraska, a stupid and cruel fight in the midst of a snow blizzard.

The rest of the stories have to do with Civil War episodes and other moments in the US history. My favorite tale is the one that's on the cover of the book: the Open Boat. It is masterfully told, the story is tense, sad and exciting. The reader can feel the up and down movement of the boat, the cold wetness of the clothes, the seasickness the characters suffer, the desolation at every failure to approach the coast, the relationship between the characters, etc. It is a pity that Crane died so young, since in these short stories he shows himself as a talented, gifted and mature writer.

Better Than "The Red Badge of Courage".......1999-10-12

Crane proves to be an early American master of the short story. I found "Courage" to be plodding and obvious, but Crane's short stories rescue his literary reputation for me.

The stories are well paced with vivid characters and little epiphany by story's end.
