Book Description
Law and Medicine, the third volume in the Current Legal issues series, is a comprehensive and provocative treatment of an area that will stimulate and enlighten anyone interested in law and medicine. This volume considers the many areas where medicine intersects with the law. Advances in medical research, reproductive science and genetic research give rise to ethical and legal issues that are well known. These are reflected in chapters on cloning, organ donation, choosing genetic characteristics and the use of Viagra. At the same time changes in health care funding call into question the rights of patients, whilst a rise in medical negligence litigation calls into question the doctor's duty of care. What rights will patients have in a privately funded health service and what room is there for the patient's right to choose or refuse treatment in such a system? The changing structure of health care is in the government's hands comes whilst the supply of technology and drugs flows unregulated by market forces. In the future clashes between what can be done and what ought to be done will be increasingly referred to the courts. All of these important and changing facets of law and medicine are reflected in this collection.

Book Description
In the wake of a flood of new data and images from several exploratory missions, fascination with Mars has become even more intense than it was when Percival Lowell believed he had observed canals constructed by live Martians. While we know that these never existed, we do have evidence that Mars once had rivers, shallow lakes, glaciers, huge active volcanoes, and intense flooding. In this book Peter Cattermole, a geologist who has been studying the planet for many years, captures the sense of continuing excitement about Mars and its history. He builds his story on the foundations of his earlier book, Mars: The Story of the Red Planet (Chapman Hall, 1992) At that time, although a large data archive and an overall picture of Mars' geological development existed, relatively little was known of the planet's volatile history, of short-term changes in climate and weather, and of the possible existence of large bodies of surfaced water. The discovery of what might be organic remains in an Antartic meteorite from Mars was completely unanticipated as well. Since then, new studies from the Mariner 9 and the Viking probes have appeared, new Earth-based spectroscopic measurements and oservations from the Hubble space telescope have been made, the meteorite has been analyzed (inconclusively) and, of course, Mars Pathfinder and Mars Global Surveyor have arrived. An immense amount of visual, geochemical, and physical data concerning the rocks, landscape, and weather is now available. The new book draws on this wealth of new information, providing a clear account of current scientific understanding of the Red Planet.
Customer Reviews:
Unexpected, not perfect, but very welcomed.......2001-12-21
This book is very surprising: the large hardcover format makes you think that you are about to read a beautiful Mars book, full of pictures with limited scientific information... You couldn't be more wrong! What you have here is a highly technical, accurate and up-to-date scientific review of our present state of knowledge about the Red Planet.
The text and presentation is completely similar to the articles found in the scientific publications such as "Science": text split on two columns, black-and-white pictures, graphics and bibliography.
In order to get the most out of this book, you must already have some good knowledge of the planet and of geology, because the author does assume that you know a lot of things and will not bother explain the basics. From this point of view, this book is a welcomed surprise for the Mars enthusiasts like me, because it brings you one step (or more) further. For the beginners, you should avoid this book, and get instead the beautiful "Mars : Uncovering the Secrets of the Red Planet" (by P. Raeburn, National Geographic, ISBN 0792273737).
Now, for those really willing to learn about Mars with this book, let's get into the details.
As I said, you should know about Mars before reading this book. The best way to get there is to read the massive "Mars" (University of Arizona Press, ISBN 0816512574). This 1500-page Mars bible covers everything, but is in some way outdated (published in 1991, before Phobos 1 & 2, Pathfinder, and MGS). This is where the book by Cattermole becomes complementary, and could be considered as an update of the other one.
The large majority of the chapters are on Martian geology: plains, volcanism, craters, polar regions, fluvial activity, etc. Every aspect is covered in great details, including the latest results from MGS. But unless you are a trained geologist (like the author), you will probably be a little overwhelmed by the vocabulary. But even with a partial understanding of the science, the wealth of information is worth the effort. A piece of advice: get a map of Mars and keep it with you while reading.
Only a few chapters are about the atmospheric conditions, the satellites or even the possibility of life on the planet. This is not surprising since the bulk of our current knowledge is about geology, but may leave you disappointed. Especially the chapter on weather and climate: quite a lot is known about Martian weather, but this chapter is confusing and ambiguous, revealing that the author is not an expert in this field.
Regrettably, this book suffers from many errors, typographical or worse. I have spotted 2 figures where the curves are not even printed, leaving the arrows pointing nowhere (fig. 4.5 and fig. 13.2); fig. 3.7 is weirdly centred at 31.53°S 130.73°N; fig. 8.9 is centred at an impossible 241°N (!) and on p.89 we learn that Apollinaris Patera is lying at 96°S; fig. 9.8 lacks the "solid line" used in the explanation; on p.48, we learn that the upper limit for micrometeorites is 1 billion kg (which does not sound very microscopic)... The list could go on. This is unfortunate, because the scientific quality of this book is weakened by the fear of reading something erroneous because of poor proof-reading.
Despite the many errors, this book is an impressive summary of our current knowledge, and is worth reading. And with the arrival or Mars Odyssey, you will be well prepared.
Not for the Casual Reader.......2001-07-19
Dr. Peter Cattermole was a former lecture of Geology at the University of Sheffield and a former principle investigator for NASA's Planetary Geology and Geophysics Program. As one would expect from a person with this background, this book presents a geologist's view of the planet Mars. Unfortunately, if one is not a geologist or versed in the sciences, this book maybe difficult to follow. Even this reviewer, who is an amateur geologist and well versed in a variety of engineering and science disciplines, could only read a few chapters at time (sometimes only a paragraph) without having to put the book down and reflect on what I had learned.
Each chapter of the book covers a different aspect of Martian geology. For example, there are chapters on craters, dunes, polar regions, the weather and climate, plus many more. There are also sections on the two moons of Mars and a summary of the robotic exploration of the planet. While there were times when I I had to put this book down to digest all the information I had read, I can definitely say that I learned more than I ever have about the planet Mars.
While the text maybe difficult for some people to follow (including this reviewer at times), there are numerous high resolution black and white photographs as well as some nice color photograph maps which present the many varied geological terrains that exist on Mars. Many of the photographs I have never seen published before, especially those from the Viking orbiters.
The author does provide a detailed reference list of over two hundred separate sources, which will allow the reader to thoroughly a specific topic. I found it refreshing that the author chosen only a few of his own papers for reference material, which does not always happen.
In summary, if you know geology, like high quality space photography, are out for a challenge, or want to learn a whole bunch about Mars, this book is for you

Book Description
Over the past decade, total-reflection X-ray fluorescence, or TXRF, has been used increasingly for multi element analysis in laboratories and industry worldwide. Providing reliable, economical readings of the minute mass or low concentration of elements, TXRF is especially suitable for micro- and trace analysis. It is also effective in the analysis of flat sample surfaces and stratified near-surface layers, offering a nondestructive means of quality control of wafers for the semiconductor industry.
This is the first book dedicated to this powerful and highly efficient analytical tool. Written by a leading expert with three decades of specialization in X-ray spectral analysis, it features a remarkably readable treatment complete with hundreds of illustrations, equations, and references. Using only a minimum of mathematics, the author focuses on practical applications of TXRF in a variety of disciplines, including geology, biology, material and environmental sciences, medicine, forensics, and art history.
The book begins with an introduction to the physical fundamentals of X-ray fluorescence and the principles of total reflection. A survey of TXRF instruments and their operation includes high-power X-ray sources, beam-adapting units, sample positioning, and energy-dispersive detection and registration. Professor Klockenkämper shows readers how to perform analyses, using sample prepa-ration and spectra recording and interpretation, and presents real-world examples from environmental, medical, industrial, art-historical, and forensic applications. The book closes with a discussion of the latest developments in the field, drawing a comparison between TXRF and other methods of analytical atomic spectroscopy.
Total-Reflection X-Ray Fluores-cence Analysis helps professionals evaluate the suitability of this method to their specific needs, pinpoint new applications, and gain insight into the future of TXRF. It is an excellent text for graduate students and a useful guide for scientists and technicians in a wide range of fields.
This is the first monograph to be devoted entirely to total- reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF)-a young, yet powerful method of analytical atomic spectroscopy. Written by a leading expert in X-ray spectral analysis, the book provides an overview of the field, reveals the advantages of TXRF over competing methods, and describes its application in numerous disciplines, including geology, biology, material and environmental sciences, medicine, toxicology, forensics, art history, and archaeology.
Tables, figures, equations, and examples are provided throughout. The author discusses both theory and techniques, and walks the reader through the necessary steps to get highly reliable determinations of the minute mass or low concentration of elements. Remarkably communicative and accessible, this book
* Explores the uses of TXRF in micro- and trace analysis, and in surface- and near-surface-layer analysis

Description:
Quartz reflectors are a common substrate for total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF) analysis. Especially low masses of trace elements can be determined on these surfaces. In the present work, various complexing reagents were immobilized on the surface of quartz reflectors. The reflectors were immersed in mercury solutions and selective mercury collection took place. The effect of immersion time was examined and a few minutes were found adequate. The reflectors were analysed for mercury by TXRF. Different complexing reagents showed different collection capabilities; 4-(2-pyridazo-resorcinol) gave the best among them. The effect of various experimental parameters was examined like pH, interferences from other ions, etc. Mercury speciation was successfully tested by comparing inorganic mercury results with the methyl mercury ones. A very good selectivity for inorganic mercury was found. It was achieved very good linearity in the 1-500ngmL^-^1 mercury concentration range and the minimum detection limit was equal to 2.5ngmL^-^1.

Book Description
A witty and inventive satire of "men of science" and their thinking, as a team of scientists races to decode a mysterious message from space. "I had the feeling that I was standing at the cradle of a new mythology. A last will and testament...we as the posthumous heirs of Them..."A Helen and Kurt Wolff Book
Customer Reviews:
Heavy going exploration of ideas.......2007-04-20
His Master's Voice tells the story of a project set up after a "message" is received from outer space. The story is narrated by a somewhat self-satisfied scientist involved in the project.
HMV has little in the way of plot. It is more of an exploration of ideas relating to the source and meaning of the message - and a gentle satire on the machinations of top scientists. It's pretty heavy going and only marginally worth the trip.
If are are thinking of reading this because you enjoyed Solaris (as I did), then you may be disappointed.
LEM THE THINKER .......2006-07-06
Stanislaw Lem's HIS MASTER'S VOICE is a masterful work with issues. The story, simple on its face and straightforward enough, has an alien message sent via neutrino particle waves being intercepted by mid-20th Century humankind at the height of the Cold War. An ever-growing army of scientists from every conceivable discipline are gathered in the desert (think Manhattan Project) to decode the thing. This formidable assemblage quickly begins to resemble nothing so much as the Biblical Tower of Babel. Agendas are on parade, most noticeably that of the American military, always on the lookout for a new mega-weapon (they nearly get their wish). In the end, nothing is resolved and we are left with far more questions than answers. (Beware: some of those questions are themselves quite remarkable, with the power to twist the average mind into an intellectual pretzel overnight.)
What Lem really gets right here is practically all in the Introduction, a stellar piece that had me jotting quotes on bookmarks. The "story," such as it is, doesn't really get going until about the second chapter. Essentially, the depths of human intellectual limitations are mined throughout. Lem's deft use of the desertscape serves to remind us of our hopelessly remote place in the universe and of the sheer vastness of space. Lonesome, indeed.
Where the book goes wrong is in Lem's basic approach. Rendered as a sort of posthumous epistolic diary, there is scant dialogue and very little action. A more dramatic approach would have saved HMV from its utter dryness. My guess is, this time around, Lem only wished a room with enough scale in which to park his ideas, and this he has done to the point where too much of the time the piece resembles more a work of philosophy than fiction. A case of too much telling and not enough showing. Any dependable novelist would recognize the mistake.
In the end, HMV is not a display of Lem the Artist, but Lem the Thinker. And what a thinker he was.
no easy answers.......2006-04-09
Lem's bibliography cosnists of a great variety of books. From fairytales (featuring robots) to incredibly difficult quasi-philosophical works. HMV can be placed somewhere in the middle of the scale.
It can be read even if you're not a scholar, at the same time being a very demanding book. The incredible and unique thing about Lem (whose death was a tragedy to me) is that he was able do describe truly ALIEN beings, their actions by definition impossible to comprehend with human minds. Where other accomplished writers give us descriptions like: "it was a kind of a hive" or "it was game hunter" Lem does not. OK, he gives out some hints, but these are not to be treated as any kind of explanation.
If you want to briefly touch a mystery read His Master's Voice or Solaris. Both masterpieces, they will open your mind to the unknown and make other Sci-Fi novels look ridiculous.
Having read the book, over the last 7-8 years I've been sometimes wondering what really happened in HMV. So far, 1:0 for Mr Lem. Rest in peace, my Master.
Worth the Nobel Prize.......2006-02-24
Lem should have got the Nobel Prize for this book. It's highly philosophical and somehow wraps up the history of mankind in 200 pages.
A complex signal is received from space, the brightest heads of the world assembled to decipher it, and in the end it turns out that the message may be nothing less than the "DNA" of the universe, the basic instructions for life.
Lem is a very controversial writer: his "contact novels" are brilliant, the early books are good, too, I didn't like his stories so much, though. He doesn't care about the popular definition of science fiction. His books are actually a lot more about science than fiction.
Also be warned: His Master's Voice is damn hard to read, but it's worth every minute. (Maybe read Solaris first to get into the mood.)
A difficult, but rewarding read...quite unlike anything else in science fiction.......2006-01-21
"His Master's Voice" is written as a brilliant mathematician's account of working on a Manhatten Project-like attempt to decipher a signal from space. The attempt has only succeeded in deciphering a tiny fragment of the message (and that is not well understood). Thus the work fits in with Lem's many writings on the subject of the "alien" and how it may be impossible to understand something which is truly different from us. These other works include "Fiasco", "Eden" and (most famously) "Solaris". "His Master's Voice" is the most realistic and the most philosophical in tone. The tale is set in cold war America, and includes a fairly pedestrian plot line around the possibility the signal contains instructions for a weapon, but the bulk of the book consists of the narrator's fundamental observations on life and the universe. The book in fact starts out quite difficultly with a dense introduction and first chapter full of allusions to modern philosophy before starting to tell the "story". Do not be put off by this initial section...it is certain no adventure thriller, but the book does become more approachable and at the same time remains very thought provoking.
I have always suspected Carl Sagan read this book before he wrote "Contact" as the high concept remains...

Book Description
An invaluable book for the collector for the collector and enthusiast alike. Relives an exceedingly glamorous era. Advice is given on how to start a collection and how to care for your gramophone.
Customer Reviews:
Very useful book, packed with information and great graphics.......2003-12-27
Dave Cooper has produced a valuable reference work about the portable spring-motored HMV gramophone (phonograph), and a quite beautiful one at that. This is not a subject that has been treated before with such lustrous detail. The story begins in the mid-1920s and finishes as late as 1960 or so (perhaps later if one considers models manufactured in India). All of the models have been illustrated or photographed with their respective color and other model variations (my favorite is the De Luxe Model 101 with crocodile leatherette exterior). Very useful information is detailed for each model, such as mechanical or stylistic variations through the production histories, which make it easy to date your own machine (my red 102 is from about 1950, it turns out). And some very unusual machines are illustrated as well, made for Asian markets or special orders.
The only flaw I can find is the included CD, somewhat of a gimmick, but one which had potential, including British and American pop music from the 20s-30s. The transfers, unfortunately, are not good, a combination of being over-filtered and having unfortunate distortion (perhaps worn records were being overcompensated-for?).
Anyway, buy it for the book. And you can't beat Amazon's price.
