Too Many MD's .......2007-02-15

This book is poorly written. Too many Doctors and not one of them can write a complete sentence without over explaining. And then the next sentence attempts to describe the previous sentence. Mostly, so far, it's just self serving tripe. I am getting my doctorate in Naturopathy and this is required reading. If I didn't have to read it, I certainly wouldn't.

A Must Read and Do for Educators.......2003-03-24

I am so impressed with this book that I would not let any teachers be certified unless they had mastered the communication skills in this manual, regardless of the level of education they teach at.

I first learned about the book/manual when I took an inservice course at my school back in 1984. I have been using the communications tools ever since in all aspects of my life that require communications with others.

Such situations are common in signal processing and the bootstrap is especially useful when only a small sample is available or an analytical analysis is too cumbersome or even impossible. Wayne S. Cole is well-known as an influential and significant professor-author in the historiography of American foreign relations. In this book, we see a different side: a careful and reflective memorist who has pondered on the significance of his life and the times that he lived through. And what times they were: Depression-era America, World War II, the challenging years of the Cold War, the onset of campus unrest, changes in the nature of the family and societal patterns. Cole lived through it all, and observed carefully the world around him, with a shrewd and often unsparing bluntness and honesty. In this book we learn what it was like to grow up in a rural community in the 1930's, how the war affected him and his colleagues (he became a skilled and indeed gifted flight instructor), and how he adjusted to the postwar world, embarking on a career that would see him rise to the pinnacle of academic recognition in the field of American foreign affairs. A Book to Be Reckoned With.......2001-07-04

Stanley Crouch is an excellent essayist, and of his books, Notes of a Hanging Judge is the best I've read so far. That being said, some of the essays in this collection still anger me, some 8 years after I first read them.

Much of his national exposure has seemingly been created by the gratuitous pot shots he takes at notable blacks, in efforts to knock them off some imagined pedestal. Two examples stand out. In the Rage of Race,(#34) one of two essays about James Baldwin, Crouch embarks on an acidic deconstruction; claiming that Baldwin's late-career work "sold out to rage, despair, self-righteousness and a will to scandalize." Crouch further wrote that Baldwin's mantle as black literary spokesman led him to neglect his craft, and eroded the impact of his subsequent work. To the contrary, there are numerous black artists, whose passion and activism did not lower the quality of their work(i.e. Paul Robeson; and Ishmael Reed-see Airing Dirty Laundry, and Writin' is Fightin). To Baldwin's credit, he defiantly refused to "sit in some ivory tower perfecting my craft" while events on the civil rights ground demanded his attention and participation. In "Nationalism of Fools(Essay #25)Crouch reduced Malcolm X to a purveyor of "a cockeyed racial vision of history which precluded any insights into human nature..." Crouch's willingness to adopt the mainstream consensus about Malcolm left him no room to study the true evolution of Malcolm's world view; it expanded beyond U.S. borders, transcended civil rights, and embraced human rights instead.

With these criticisms, you may wonder why I gave this book 5 stars. I did so because I LEARNED SO MUCH!! Crouch introduced me to people I'd never heard of, and whose work I now enjoy. The best example is("Chitlins at the Waldorf"-Essay #6) his tribute to Albert Murray, who was a contemporary of Ralph Ellison. Murray's book, Stompin the Blues, is widely regarded as the definitive text about the meaning of jazz and the blues. Because of Crouch, I now have four of Charles Johnson's books. Crouch's essay, "Another Master" profiles Senegalese film maker Ousmane Sembene, who recently had a month-long festival of his films shown at NYC's Film Forum. For all the acerbity in some essays, Crouch also shows real compassion and empathy, as his essay about Lionel Mitchell attests.

For the most part, I will never align myself politically with the conservatives with whom Crouch appears cozy. However, I will never stop reading his essays either, for they are rich, improvisational, educational and eclectic. Notes of a Hanging Judge is an intense,fascinating workout, which is at times fun. It is a truly worthwhile reading experience, and I highly recommend it!

Yikes! Western myth at its most interesting..........2002-03-07

In reading this book, I was moved to wonder if it was 2002 or 1965. While not a bad story, the author gets so many details wrong that he must have used "Hang 'em High" as his only source.

Not a bad book, but totally fiction, pure and simple..

A Cowboy's Point of View.......2001-07-01

I can't remember when I've enjoyed a Western more than this second book from Joseph West. It's not just the skill he shows in weaving together history and fiction. It's how well he uses Sam'l, a scrawny redheaded and slightly self-deceived cowboy, to tell the adventures and mishaps of him and Johnny Blue. This time it's 1888 and continues from the first one (Me and Johnny Blue). The fixes Sam'l gets them into come fast and furious, each with outrageous humor and pathos. Historical characters include Buffalo Bill, painter Charles Russell, Judge Isaac Parker, lawmen Heck Thomas and Chris Madsen, evil Frank Canton. The way he deals with these historical figures shows them in a less than complimentary light. This to me makes it even more believable. The fictional characters come to life like few others I've read: gunfighter Shade Hannah, wolfer Jebadiah Anthony, Indian Red Horse, Johnny Blue's girlfriend Lo May, a couple of clergymen, and flim-flam man Doc Fortune (who appeared in the first book). With this said, don't get the wrong idea about this book. It's not "historical fiction" in the sense of trying to recount historical events fictionally. The author is simply telling a story with historical figures realistically running through it. It's a rare treat for any who like a good story in a Western setting. The worst thing about it, I don't know how anyone, including West, can keep up with this high standard of writing. But I sure hope he can.

No Noose is Good Noose.......2004-07-18

`Braxfield: The Hanging Judge?: The Life and Times of Lord Justice-Clerk Robert McQueen of Braxfield' is an insightful biography of a controversial jurist. Brian D. Osborne presents the reader with cruelty personified, even allowing for the less humane times in which McQueen dispensed his callous justice. It is as much a socio-historic treatise as it is a polemic against capital punishment. To add weight to his argument, Osborne compares the brutality of Braxfield to the brutishness of a more contemporary judge, Sir Bayshus Cyst, of the High Court of South Africa. Cyst presided over the court from 1954 till 1962, and his merciless mindset is clearly seen in the passage cited on pages 121 to 125;

`Sir Bayshus Cyst, almost asleep at times, was hearing a case brought against a hairdresser charged with administering a colour rinse to a client without uttering a single word. The client was suing for damages, claiming professional negligence against the hairdresser because idle chatter should have been included in the price. Needless to say, the hairdresser was found guilty, and Sir Bayshus waived damages, instead ordering that the accused be `hanged by his ponytail until dead'. When the Attorney General heard of the sentence, he instructed the judge to reduce it. Cyst, chastened but showing only slight leniency, did so, ordering that the prisoner be `denied herbal shampoo till the onset of split ends'. His concluding remarks, `... and let that be a lesson to all such offenders who fail to babble incessantly about star signs, numerology, auras and psychic readings', caused the Johannesburg College of Hairdressing to introduce `Basic Boredom' and `Advanced Banalities' into its curriculum.'
