    Book Description

Within the context of the financial scandals on Enron, Tyco et al, the accounting profession is under scrutiny as never before. More importantly, the basis of financial accounting, the standards and guidelines by which company accounts are both drawn up, and are validated are being questioned in that they appear to singularly fail to prevent and potentially aid and abet financial wrong-doing. As a result "truth in accounting" has become not simply a professional issue but a political one.

In this book, Anthony Rayman seeks to explain the failure of the conventional system of accounting and to propose an alternative system to promote the improvement of corporate governance in the market economy. It expertly explores the theoretical basis of generally accepted assumptions, and challenges the validity of the current accounting system.

This stimulating examination systematically critiques the existing system and will promote discussion and debate in both students and professionals. Accessibly written and expertly argued, this book will be of great interest to students, academics and professionals throughout the accounting arena.

      Book Description

By means of a modified Delphi, the editors bring together nationally recognized leaders in the aging workforce arena. With these experts, we find the best minds in America identifying the most crucial issues facing our society as we strive for organizational excellence and prepare for the future with an increasingly aging workforce. These issues are identified: recruiting and retaining older workers; training older workers; career development for older workers; enhancing intergenerational relations; health and older workers; pensions and older workers; and redefining retirement. Each issue is then addressed from two perspectives. In most cases, the perspective of leaders in the field, such as expert consultants, leaders and professionals in professional organizations, acclaimed think tanks, and governmental agencies, is contrasted with the perspective of acclaimed academic scholars from fields such as psychology, sociology, law, and gerontology, among others. For each issue, the contributors present specific recommendations for building individual and collective excellence with an aging workforce. In the final chapter, the editors summarize and synthesize these contributions and present strategies that are most likely to result in systemic, organizational change.

This book by one of the leaders in adaptive optics covers the fundamental theory and then describes in detail how this technology can be applied to large ground-based telescopes to compensate for the effects of atmospheric turbulence. It includes information on basic adaptive optics components and technology, and has chapters devoted to atmospheric turbulence, optical image structure, laser beacons, and overall system design. The chapter on system design is particularly detailed and includes performance estimation and optimization. Combining a clear discussion of physical principles with numerous real-world examples, this book will be a valuable resource for all graduate students and researchers in astronomy and optics.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The book is a must for readers interested in adaptive optics.......2000-06-25

The book does an excellent job of describing the basic principles and the practice of adaptive optics for astronomical applications. The author was a pioneer in adaptive optics and in the 1970s he built the first system capable of compensating a large astronomical telescope at visible wavelengths. The book gives a good history of adaptive optics including an excellent bibliography. Wavefront sensors, correctors, laser beacons, and wavefront reconstruction and control systems are described. Current adaptive optics programs are described and future prospects are discussed. I had the good fortune of working with the author at the time the first adaptive optics system was built and the author conveys in this book the excitement we felt about adaptive optics at that time. While the book is very specialized and technical, and the number of readers who will enjoy the book is limited, if you are interested in adaptive optics the reading of this book is a must.

          Book Description

Adaptive optics is a powerful new technique used to sharpen telescope images blurred by the Earth’s atmosphere. This authoritative book is the first dedicated to the use of adaptive optics in astronomy. Mainly developed for defence applications, the technique of adaptive optics has only recently been introduced in astronomy. Already it has allowed ground-based telescopes to produce images with sharpness rivalling those from the Hubble Space Telescope. The technique is expected to revolutionise the future of ground-based optical astronomy. Written by an international team of experts who have pioneered the development of the field, this timely volume provides both a rigorous introduction to the technique and a comprehensive review of current and future systems. It is set to become the standard reference for graduate students, researchers and optical engineers in astronomy and other areas of science where adaptive optics is finding exciting new applications.

            Book Description

Adaptive optics allows the theoretical limit of angular resolution to be achieved from a large telescope, despite the presence of turbulence. Thus an eight meter class telescope, such as one of the four in the Very Large Telescope operated by ESO in Chile, will in future be routinely capable of an angular resolution of almost 0.01 arcsec, compared tot he present resolution of about 0.5 arcsec for conventional imaging in good condition.
All the world's major telescopes either have adaptive optics or are in the process of building AO systems. It turns out that a reasonable fraction of the sky can be observed using adaptive optics, with moderately good imaging quality, provided imaging in done in the near IR. To move out of the near IR, with its relatively poor angular resolution, astronomers need a laser guide star. There is a layer of Na atoms at approximately 90 km altitude that can be excited by a laser to produce such a source, or Rayleigh scattering can be employed lower in the atmosphere. But the production and use of laser guide stars is not trivial, and the key issues determining their successful implementation are discussed here, including the physics of the Na atom, the cone effect, tilt determination, sky coverage, and numerous potential astronomical applications.

                                  Book Description

The basic theory of sheet metal forming in the automotive, appliance and aircraft industries is given. This fills a gap between the descriptive treatments in most manufacturing texts and the advanced numerical methods used in computer-aided-design systems.

The book may be used by lecturers in undergraduate courses in manufacturing; plentiful exercises and worked examples provide quantitative tutorial problems for students. A separate, but related simulation software package advertised on this page enables students to explore the limits of processes and understand the influence of different process and material variables.

Engineers in stamping plants and press shops find the book useful in understanding what happens during forming and why failures occur. The book is also used as a text for industrial short courses that have been given in many countries. Die designers and tooling engineers find the simple treatment of processes useful at the conceptual design stage and also in determining modifications needed to overcome problems indicated by detailed numerical analysis.

The original text, published 10 years ago, has been completely rewritten for this edition and newer topics such as hydroforming included. Simple equations governing plastic deformation, press forming, bending, punch stretching and deep drawing are derived and explained. The aim is to provide simple applicable methods rather than complex numerical techniques for practising engineers and for students interested in a quantitative and practical approach.

                                  SIMPLIFIED STAMPING SIMULATION SOFTWARE "4S'

The analytical treatment in this book is used to develop simulation modules for simple cases of sheet forming such as stamping, deep drawing, bending and hydroforming. Students can investigate the influence of tooling dimensions, material properties and process variables such as friction on the outcome of operations and see from animated models how, for example, press loads develop during forming. Applications using this package greatly enhance interest in the development of theory in the book.

The website http://www.mssinternational.com provides further information and an opportunity to run some of the modules.

Presents the fundamentals of sheet metal forming - bending, stretching, press forming, deep drawing and hydroforming

Shows how deformation, loads and process limits can be calculated using simple equations

Concentrates on simple, applicable methods rather than complex numerical techniques

Contains many exercises, worked examples and solutions

Used as a reference text in undergraduate manufacturing courses, as a required text in specialist graduate courses and as a course text for industrial short courses

Is supported by a separate, but related simulation software package described below.

1 out of 5 stars Hate to disagree, but..........2005-04-11

...I found this book practically useless. Its summaries of the plays leave out major portions, the analyses are over-simplified, (even for high schoolers) and the "extras" are usually useless info about 20 year old film versions no one is interested in. It is funny, and at times provided an interesting tidbit or two, but for something meatier, REALLY read the sparknotes version free online or at Barnes and Noble.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Introduction to Shakespeare.......2004-10-25

The book is not only informative, but so humorous, easy and fun to read. First part of the books which sets the stage for the plays and explores history, background and some on-going controversies about the authorship of the plays reads like an engaging spy novel.

There is a section dealing with the differences between the Old English, Middle English and Modern English, even an amusing guide for creating your own insults using Shakespeare's English - as in "oh, you bawdy, dizzy-eyed giglet!"

The second part of the book takes you through the plays: comedies, "problem plays", histories and tragedies - the cast, the plot, performances, movies and actors worthwhile checking out (if you haven't yet).

At the end of the book is an overview of Shakespeare's poems and sonnets.

Once, you're done with this book, you can move on to actually reading the entire Shakespeare's plays. You may find them more appetizing.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Better than Cliff's Notes!.......2003-01-08

Even people who aren't idiots may appreciate this book. It's funny, cute, informative, and gives lots of easy-to-understand tips and translations. This is way better than Cliffs' Notes, especially since it gives you plenty of reasons to read the actual plays.

The first few chapters are devoted to Shakespeare's life, the who-was-Shakespeare-really? debate, his theaters, and some stuff about Elizabethan slang terms. Then it goes to the plays themselves. It gives background info on the time period and how it shaped the plays (for example, views on marriage for "Taming of the Shrew"), a cast list, a pretty good plot summary, and then some mild literary analysis.

Sprinkled on every page are bits of trivia about the plays, the writing, and the time period -- they're not really part of the reviews, just side tidbits. Additionally, they include a chart of Shakespeare's dirty language, a lot of funny jokes, and even reviews of the various movie adaptations (all the major ones -- good, bad, and really, really weird!). There are also pics from various movies/plays, featuring major actors like Patrick Stewart, Elizabeth Taylor, and the all-star cast of the fantastic recent "Much Ado About Nothing."

This is a must-read for Shakespeare buffs and newbies (especially if you don't understand what's going on). Even glaze-eyed schoolkids may be suckered in by the promise of learning some exotic dirty words!

                                  5 out of 5 stars Destroys Shakespeare's Pompous Mystique.......2002-12-30

To put this in perspective, I'm a 47-year-old professional totally unconnected to the literary world, but reading is my favorite hobby. I have made many attempts over the years to "get into" Shakespeare and reading The Compete Idiot's Guide to Shakespeare is part of my latest (and possibly most successful) attempt.

The Guide is just what I needed. It frames Shakespeare's world perfectly giving historical background, addressing the Shakespeare myths (e.g., who really wrote the Shakespeare plays?), explaining the poems and Sonnets and, finally, giving a succinct and amusing rundown of all the plays by type (tragedy, history, comedy, romance and "problems"). I love Dr. Laurie Rozakis' writing style. Not only is the book extremely easy to read, her clarity and humor make it great fun. I also think she really knows her stuff. Dr. Rozakis is a prolific wonder (check out her website at http://www.members.aol.com/Rozakile/).

I read the book cover to cover and intend to use it as a reference as I read the plays. It sure helped destroy Shakespeare's pompous mystique for me!

5 out of 5 stars A Fun Way to Learn About the Bard!.......2000-10-24

This book is the ultimate way to get acquainted with Shakespeare's works while having fun every step of the way. The author comes off not only as very knowledgeable about the topic, but as a wit who would have given Shakespeare himself a laugh or two. Her coverage is comprehensive and insightful, and the book provides a wonderful way for young and old alike to gain access to Shakespeare's meaning and beauty.
