Description:
Separation of 11 arsenic species on a single column was achieved by anion-exchange high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and selective detection was provided by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). Boric acid was used to selectively modify the retention of arsenosugars. The borate-arsenosugar complexation improved the separation of the following 11 arsenic compounds: tetramethylarsonium ion (TMI), arsenobetaine (AsB), arsenate, arsenite, dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), monomethylarsonic acid (MMA), arsenosugars 1-4, and an unidentified arsenic compound. The optimised mobile phase composition was 10mM ammonium phosphate, 30mM boric acid at pH 8.5. Rice and rice cereal extracts were analyzed using this method revealing the presence of arsenite, arsenate, DMA, and an unidentified arsenic species that has the same retention time as that of arsenosugar 2. Relative standard deviation of retention time from analyses of arsenic in different sample matrices, Fucus serratus, rice, rice cereal, oyster, dogfish, and mushroom extracts, was less than 1.0%, demonstrating the robustness of the separation method.

Description:
The fertilizing potential of Fe-enriched biosolids has been attributed to Fe associations with humic substances contained therein. In this study, alkaline and near-neutral aqueous extractions of humic substances from an Fe-enriched biosolid were followed by gel chromatographic fractionation and characterization (CHNS elemental analysis; UV/visible and FTIR spectroscopy; FAAS analysis). The alkaline bulk humic extract had a strong fulvic character and Fe was predominantly associated with the higher molecular weight (~50000Da) molecules, possibly including organic-coated Fe oxides from which Fe may be released more slowly. Under both near-neutral and alkaline conditions, associations with lower molecular weight humic molecules were also observed, indicative of the presence of Fe in more readily available forms. Thus the biosolid appears to have good short- and long-term fertilizing potential, particularly for alkaline, Fe-deficient soils.

Customer Reviews:
Nice collection of papers.......2002-04-23
This is a nice collection of technical papers by statisticians and other researchers in the field of quality and product improvement. It includes many papers from Canadians with several contributions from the group at the University of Manitoba. It is not a star-studded group of well-known names. The editor Bovas Abraham is certainly well-known and has contributed to article in the text. I also recognized M. S. Srivastava who is known for contributions and texts in multivariate analysis, Subir Ghosh from Riverside California who works in experimental design and the Kocherlakotas from Winnipeg Manitoba.
To make it a little more attractive to general audiences the editors have reprinted one of George Box's articles on scientific learning. Box's article was originally published in the proceedings in computational statistics in 1996 but certainly fits well into a volume like this. Box's philosophy on the iterative nature of scientific learning is always interesting and thought-provoking.
There are a total of 60 authors and 35 articles. A variety of topics are included and most of the papers are oriented toward applications with real examples and case studies.
Part I is on statistics and quality and includes Box's paper, a conceptual paper on variance reduction in manufacturing, roles of academic statisticians as consultants to industry and understanding the prevention focus of QS-9000 contrasted to the control focus of ISO-9000. It includes a total of 5 papers.
Part II deal with statistical process control. In addition to papers on the latest advances in control charting including automatic feedback control type methods there are papers on process capability indices with a thorough and accurate treatment of the subject. Carlsson's article is a very scholarly treatment that points out the pitfalls of naive use of process control indices and he refers to the very nice elementary articles by Gunter. I also referenced Gunter's articles in my book on the bootstrap where I applied the bootstrap to an example of estimating Cpk. Carlsson refers to the vast literature on these indices including the book by Kotz and Johnson that summarizes advances up to 1993 including the bootstrap approaches. The work on Vannman is also cited.
Carlsson's contribution is to generalize the Cpm index for unstable processes (due to a moving process mean) where there are assignable causes for the shift that can be modeled through an ANOVA model.
Kocherlakota and Kocherlakota provide a very technical paper on the statistical behavior of certain process capability index estimates when the observations come from a contaminated bivariate normal distribution (i.e. a mixture of two bivariate normals with a common covariance matrix but a shift in the mean vector). Part II consists of 11 papers
Part III covers the design and analysis of experiments and includes 9 papers including coverage on robust design, process optimization, aspects of TQM and some practical issues. The paper by Ghosh and Lopez covers how probability plots in factor screening experiments can be misleading. They also deal with methods for handling missing data.
Part IV contains articles on statistical methods for determining reliability and consists of 6 articles. It includes an article by Ratnaparkhi and Park on the application of generalized linear models in reliability studies for composite materials.
Last but not least Part V deals with statistical methods for quality improvement and consists of 4 papers. Some of these papers are a little unusual. Murdoch introduces a variation of Gibbs sampling in order to construct confidence regions for measurement uncertainty efficiently when up to 10 model parameters are involved. Gupta and Iannuzzi use logit and probit analysis methods to determine if devices used to detect antibiotics in milk meet regulatory requirements on sensitivity.

Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Forest Ecology and Management, published by Elsevier in 2006. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
Forest stand and landscape scale habitat selection of the greater glider (Petauroides volans) was investigated at 506 survey sites sampling a variety of forest types in southern Queensland, Australia. While greater gliders were detected in a wide range of forest types, they were most abundant in the more productive, tall eucalypt forests. The generated model predicted that Corymbia citriodora and Eucalyptus tereticornis were important in greater glider habitat selection, as were live hollow-bearing trees, a currently limited resource in southern Queensland. The model also predicted a negative response by greater gliders to more intensive harvesting in selectively logged stands. The introduction of a new, more intensive harvesting regime in areas of greater glider habitat in south-east Queensland will therefore have a significant impact upon glider populations, unless current habitat tree prescriptions are adjusted to specify the retention of large C. citriodora and E. tereticornis trees, and species that rapidly form hollows. The retention of patches and corridors of mature eucalypt forest will also be important to ensure greater glider conservation in intensively logged forest landscapes of southern Queensland. Greater glider densities were also influenced by one landscape scale variable, proportion of cleared habitat within a 1km spatial extent. Densities of greater gliders were predicted to decline to less than one glider per 3ha if >15% of habitat was cleared in the landscape. Recent amendments to tree clearing legislation in Queensland, whereby all broadscale clearing will be phased out by the end of 2006, will greatly facilitate greater glider conservation in remaining habitat patches. However, the management of structural characteristics important for greater gliders within forest remnants will be essential for ensuring habitat suitability for gliders in the long term.

Book Description
When Brian Dickson was appointed in 1973, the Supreme Court of Canada was preoccupied with run-of-the-mill disputes. By the time he retired as Chief Justice of Canada in 1990, the Court had become a major national institution, very much in the public eye. The Court's decisions, reforming large areas of private and public law under the Charter of Rights, were the subject of intense public interest and concern.
Brian Dickson played a leading role in this transformation. Engaging and incisive, Brian Dickson: A Judge's Journey traces Dickson's life from a Depression-era boyhood in Saskatchewan, to the battlefields of Normandy, the boardrooms of corporate Canada and high judicial office, and provides an inside look at the work of the Supreme Court during its most crucial period. Dickson's journey was an important part of the evolution of the Canadian judiciary and of Canada itself. Sharpe and Roach have written an accessible biography of one of Canada's greatest legal figures that provides new insights into the work of Canada's highest court.
