A taste of the good life.......2001-11-09
Too often (way too often) managment tends to believe that the paycheck at the end of the cycle, or the work itself is award enough to give their employees, and that they dont need any more motivation than that to stay productive. These days, that is being interepreted by long hours and low wages, and no thanks. Our work force is more stressed, and demands are too high on them for the little they get.
This book will give both employers with deep pockets, and those who scrape by a way to reward and motivate their employees to do a good day to day job, and to be more productive.
While not exhaustive, it is a great (and inexpensive) introduction to taste the good life by winning over your employees.

A very nice book on the outer solar system........2006-02-28
This is a really nice, and cheap, history of the outer solar system. Until recently Saturn was the last known planet. This all changed with the discovery of Uranus by William Herschel in 1781. Since then we have struggled to reveal information about the outer planets. The book covers both the personal lives of the main characters involved in the discoveries as well as the science involved without going into too much technical detail. At the same time it does not tend to oversimplify the significance of the science by using flowery language.
As it was written around 1990 the book is slightly out of date, missing some of the latest discoveries. However, this is forgivable given the books price. I give the book 4 stars because it is not outstanding. It is however very readable and interesting. It would be worth reading for anyone who has a general interest astronomy/space etc.
An excellent, narrowed focus which probes the outer solar system alone.......2005-09-04
Mark Littmann's Planets Beyond republishes the updated, revised 1990 edition to survey the outer planets; from the history of their discovery to modern scientific findings about the planets including Voyageur results. An excellent, narrowed focus which probes the outer solar system alone.

Pleasantly informal and substantial.......2000-07-02
This excellent book on the outer solar system is written for laypeople who want more than a short introduction to the subject. The writing style is informal but very informative.
The book was published in 1988, as Voyager 2 neared Neptune. A 1990 paperback edition describes the actual flyby.
There are chapters on Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, their discoveries, the related discovery of the first asteroids, the Voyagers' Grand Tour, the search for a tenth planet, and more.
The author also remembers the human touch. There is ample discussion of planet discoverers William Herschel, John Adams, Urban Le Verrier, and Clyde Tombaugh. We also learn about the memorable people they worked with, and sometimes against (!)
The author likes sidebars, which are quite interesting and keep the main text from bogging down. There you will find:
* A short biography of Caroline Herschel (William's sister), the first woman professional astronomer;
* Clyde Tombaugh on some of his experiences;
* Gary Flando on his discovery of the Grand Tour;
* James Christy on his discovery of Pluto's moon Charon;
* Galileo's unsuspecting observation of Neptune in 1613;
* The planned Galileo and Cassini missions;
* Much more.
One sidebar strongly supports Pluto's planetary status, but it concedes that if Pluto turns out to be a typical member of a hypothetical asteroid belt beyond Neptune, it might make sense to redesignate Pluto. Four years later, the Kuiper Belt was discovered...
Hopefully Littmann will revise the book again to include the Kuiper Belt, the Hubble Telescope, the latest speculation on Planet X, and more.
Highly recommended.
*****
January 28, 2006: I have just acquired the 1990 paperback edition.
A new 30-page chapter thoroughly covers Voyager 2's 1989 Neptune flyby. The rest of the book is almost unchanged, so the reader can compare speculation and reality.
The book suggests that a proposed 2000-2014 Pluto mission be named Tombaugh. New Horizons is now on the way to a 2015 flyby. It doesn't carry Clyde Tombaugh's name, but it does carry some of his ashes.
Much has happened since Littman's 1990 revision, and indeed since my initial 2000 review. Galileo was crashed into Jupiter after completing its mission. Cassini is at Saturn. Two new moons of Pluto were discovered. Pluto is no longer the largest known object beyond Neptune. There is no consensus whether eight, nine, or ten objects deserve the term planet. If Littman revises the book again, he has a lot of new material to discuss.
Still highly recommended.

Product Description
Combinatorial mathematicians and statisticians have made a wide range of contributions to the development of block designs, and this book brings together much of that work. The designs developed for a specific problem are used in a variety of different settings. Applications include controlled sampling, randomized response, validation and valuation studies, intercropping experiments, brand cross-effect designs, lotto and tournaments. The intra- and inter- block, nonparametric and covariance analysis are discussed for general block designs, and the concepts of connectedness, orthogonality, and all types of balances in designs are carefully summarized. Readers are also introduced to the designs currently playing a prominent role in the field: alpha designs, trend-free designs, balanced treatment-control designs, nearest neighbor designs, and nested designs. This book provides the important background results required by researchers in block designs and related areas and prepares them for more complex research on the subject.

Combinatorial Designs: Construction and Analysis
ASIN: 0849339847 |
Book Description
Frames, together with a modified fundamental construction, provide a powerful recursive mechanism for constructing resolvable balanced incomplete block designs (BIBDs). Frames and Resolvable Designs: Uses, Constructions and Existence presents a unique study of frames and their application to this construction. Chapter 1 sets the stage by describing the games combinatorialists play. It introduces basic combinatorial structures and construction techniques. Chapter 2 discusses frames extensively and includes comprehensive lists of direct and recursive constructions. Chapter 3 provides known classes of RBIBD constructions. Chapter 4 deals with existence results and demonstrates the utility of the frame approach. Chapter 5 is a series of informative tables useful for researchers. No other book tackles this demanding topic from these varied perspectives. Multi-faceted and written for easy access by different users, Frames and Resolvable Designs: Uses, Constructions and Existence is the right choice for students, as a text in advanced design theory; for researchers, as a resource complement to standard encyclopedic works; and for mathematicians and statisticians in this field, as a working handbook.
Customer Reviews:
Helpful, but specialized........2004-02-01
This book is helpful, within its limits, in understanding and constructing a few specific families of block designs. That is the book's strength and weakness. The strength is it's readable, applicable approach to construction - a welcome change from the tantalizing lists of existence proofs that other authors offer. The weakness is its specificity: it appears to address only 2-designs, and my interests are a bit broader. Still, with support from other sources, I may be able to stretch some of this book's results to meet my needs.
If you're not familiar with design theory, you're in good company (and lots of it). Perhaps the defining problem in design theory is Kirkman's Schoolgirls. They are fifteen friends who walk to school every day, on a path wide enough for only three at a time. To avoid jealousies, every girl must have walked with every other by the end of the week. In other words, divide 15 elements into sets of 3, so that every unique set of 2 appears 1 time in one or another of the triplets. (All of the numbers in that sentence may be changed to give define different designs).
Unforutnately, design theory has not yet made it into the main stream of applied math. That means that the writing I've seen falls into two extreme categories. First, there are a few isolated and popularized facts - Latin Squares or design of statistical experiments, cut off from all of their supporting reasoning. Then, there are the dense tomes, by and for mathematicians, abstracted unreachably far away from applications. This is truly a pity, because design theory informs modern cryptographic protocols, replicated databases, error correcting codes, computer architecture, sports playoffs, and gamblers looking for "the system" for Lotto. I am sure that applications would be wider and richer if the literature had more for the middle tiers of readers, myself included.
This book is certainly not for the popular press, but is a step in a more readable direction. It seems to have more applicable content and less opaque notation than other design theory I've read. Still, this book is for the specialist only.

Book Description
Through vivid word pictures and her own delightful drawings, Rosemary Trollope roams across places and generations, capturing with an artist's eye the detail and atmosphere of her own haphazard childhood in a Gloucestershire rectory before World War II -- from hilarious family escapades like the day their deranged cook almost poisoned the children with arsenic to the problems caused by the General Strike during the family's move. The foreword is by bestselling British novelist, Joanna Trollope, the author's daughter
Customer Reviews:
For those who love Glasgow.......1999-05-23
My brother gave me this book because, like Rosemary Trollope, I had attended the Glasgow School of Art, lived in Glasgow and loved the city. Her love of Glasgow and it's people is apparent throughout these autobiographical vignettes. Glasgow, like most cities, is not a place you instantly fall in love with. You have to live there and after a while you grow to love this city and it's people. I lived there many years after she did and though I could not relate to her upper class existence, I enjoyed her stories nonetheless. It's a way of life that no longer exists and she makes no apologies for it; why should she? To think at a time when her family had indoor plumbing and telephones, my family were living in houses with earthen floors and no indoor plumbing. Indeed my Mother's first job as a young girl of 14 was to work as maidservant in these well to do houses. Though she is definately from the other side of the tracks, she tells her story with humour and understanding. Glasgow is a great place to start and reading this book I wanted to go back and start all over again.

Book Description
During the 1960s and '70s, if you were in Philadelphia and in trouble with the law the word on the street was: "All you have to do is hire Bobby Simone and you will win."
And win he did.
With a reputation as the best "cross and close" criminal lawyer anywhere and a track record to match, Simone began attracting not only Philadelphia's most talked-about citizens as clients, but people in legal jams all over the country. From the glamorous and infamous Lillian Reis to then reputed mob boss Angelo Bruno, and eventually to his most notorious client ever--alleged La Cosa Nostra head Nicky Scarfo--Simone delivered the acquittals, the reversals, and the "Get Out of Jail Free" cards.
But along the way, he would learn a fact that would turn the rest of his 35-year career into a walk through a minefield: The government is a sore loser. Whether you decide you love Bobby Simone or hate him, his is one unforgettable story. And it ain't over yet--not by a long shot.
Customer Reviews:
Good story, even if somewhat self-serving.......2003-03-04
Bobby Simone was always a guy we in the press liked. As a newspaper reporter in Philadelphia in the 70s and later in New Jersey in the 80s and 90s, I frequently read about and heard about , and a few times actually met Bobby Simone. I covered the trial in Federal Court where he unsuccessfully defended Nicodemo Scarfo and I watched Bobby Simone successfully defend himself against income tax charges.(forget that old saw that a lawyer who defends himself has a fool for a client, Bobby won this case).
Bobby was always friendly to reporters -- after all, we were his free advertising agency -- and he was always quotable. He was also always a strong advocate for his clients. But apparently he crossed the line between advocacy and participation once too often when the feds brought him down.
But to hear him tell it, the feds went after him not because he broke the law, but because he represented unpopular clients. Yeah, right.
I also heard Bobby Simone tell juries that the government was arresting guys like Nicky Scarfo only because the government was exercising some kind of prejudice against Italian-Americans. He actually used to say that to juries! I was there, I heard it. (Forget that many FBI case agents in the Organized Crime squads were Italian-Americans, many the best police officers who hated the mob had Italian names, and one of the most effective Assistant US Attorneys to prosecute the Scarfo case was himself an Italian-American who was very proud of his heritage.)
The book isn't much better. Some of it is self-serving claptrap. But if you can put that aside, it is the story by an entertaining story teller talking about an exciting career. And besides, Bobby Simone is a nice guy, most people who meet him like him, and that comes through in the book, too.
A book you can't put down and a story you won't forget!.......2002-05-28
This was a really great account about the life and times of "mob lawyer" Robert Simone. The author does not pretend that the account is objective, and indeed it is not. It is, however, exciting and intriguing to follow Robert Simone's story - from the beginning of his career to the height of his success and through his ultimate downfall, incarceration and back to Philly and a career in law once again. I could not tear myself away from this book.
Is this guy for real?.......2002-02-23
Mr Simone keeps telling the readers how wonderful and friendly Nicky Scarfo and Phil Leonetti are. He just seems to forget that
they are responsible for the deaths of many people. Of course they are entitled to the very best defense, but mr Simone seems
to think that these guys were treated unfairly by the government
and the judicial system. Furthermore, mr Simone contemptously describes Joseph Salerno as a no good rat, but forgets that his best buddy Phil Leonetti turned out to be just as despicable, even worse. So much for mob loyalty.
I suggest that readers familiarize themselves with the book "Breaking the Mob" by Guinther and Friel to get a different view of many of the same incidents. I`m not claiming it to be the whole truth and nothing but the truth, but at least it gives you a good comparative read.
Otherwise "The Last Mouthpiece" makes quite enjoyable reading.
A Lawyer who knows the meaning of Friendship.......2001-09-30
Mr.Bob Simone tells his life story in great detail.The ups and downs of someone who believes in the rights of his clients.And will do everything legally in his power to help them.He tell how the government hates to lose and dose everything legal or not to get even.He knows the meaning of true friendship and payed the price for it!
A candid revelation of mobsters.......2001-08-11
Robert "Bobby" Simone draws upon a 35 year career as a practicing criminal defense attorney to write a unique, informative, and at times alarming expose and anecdotal description of the criminal justice system in The Last Mouthpiece. This book reads more like a film noir script than a history of the law as we encounter "Phil "The Chicken man" Testa, Nick the Blade, Hunchback Harry, and a series of other real-life mob characters and their cadres. Here is a candid revelation of the mobsters, rats, set-ups, wires, bugs, double-crosses, strategies, judges, juries, and lawmen who were the daily elements of Simone's law practice. If you enjoy the fictional "The Sopranos" television series, then you will be fascinated by Bobby Simone's factual and real-life expose, The Last Mouthpiece.
