Book Description
Images from the Hubble Space Telescope are transforming our view of the Universe. The planets of our solar system, the birth of stars, the effects of black holes, and remote galaxies are all imaged with a clarity that can only be achieved by a telescope in space. Showcased here are sixty of the finest images from the Hubble Space Telescope. Chosen for their scientific themes and their beauty, this collection includes every kind of known object in the Universe: planets, stars, swirling clouds of gas, wheeling galaxies, remote quasars and active galaxies. This representative selection is carefully chosen to show the power of the telescope and the stunning variety of astronomical objects. Noted writers Jacqueline Mitton and Stephen P. Maran have added lucid descriptions explaining the science behind the images, and the significance of the discoveries made by the Hubble Space Telescope. This accessible summary of the Hubble Space Telescope describes its rich discoveries in non-technical terms.
Customer Reviews:
good general information.......2001-03-31
The photos are a good sampling of what the HST has given the scientific community to work with. The commentary of what the Hubble images mean is easy to understand for someone who is interested but is without a scientific background. The human mind becomes boggled by the immensity of the universe and this book gives one a sense of awe of the diversity of manifestations.

Book Description
Data-analytic approaches to regression problems, arising from many scientific disciplines are described in this book. The aim of these nonparametric methods is to relax assumptions on the form of a regression function and to let data search for a suitable function that describes the data well. The use of these nonparametric functions with parametric techniques can yield very powerful data analysis tools. Local polynomial modeling and its applications provides an up-to-date picture on state-of-the-art nonparametric regression techniques. The emphasis of the book is on methodologies rather than on theory, with a particular focus on applications of nonparametric techniques to various statistical problems. High-dimensional data-analytic tools are presented, and the book includes a variety of examples. This will be a valuable reference for research and applied statisticians, and will serve as a textbook for graduate students and others interested in nonparametric regression.

Modern Feminity Revealed.......2007-09-27
Although Greene's "The Power and the Glory" takes a similar tack in its pursuit of that dread beast, the secular humanist, here the portraiture is done in even finer shades of grey. Furthermore, "Brighton Rock"'s Ida is given more internal monologue, and a large piece of the action, than the ardent socialist lieutenant of "The Power and the Glory."
Ida is perhaps the purest distillation of what must be referred to as "the modern woman." A distant descendant of Madame Bovary, she is no less dogged in her pursuit of her own good (at least what she perceives that to be), but perhaps without even Emma's vestigial sense of shame. She has absolutely no sexual compunction, but at the same time, believes in her own measure of good and evil. As the novel progresses, and more of her character reveals itself, the portrait of her conscience becomes truly terrifying. It has absolutely no built-in governor. It is like a brain without folds. It is blank Nietzchean will-to-power.
Brighton Rock's chief strength, ultimately, is how prophetic it is. Millions of women in modern-day America (the West in general) are something like Ida. It is harder to say with certainty, perhaps, how many were like this in 1930s and 40s Britain, at the time of its authorship. In either event, credit must go to Greene -- for all of his technical lapses as a prose stylist -- for this spot-on bit of feminine psycholanalysis.
As an aside, the musings on the notion of repentance, and the guilty conscience at the moment of death, are no less profound. There's a phrase which gets thrown around in this book, "between the stirrup and the ground", which sums up Greene's understanding of the relationship between the speed and the thoroughness of repentance.
A surprisingly deep novel...........2007-07-07
Brighton rock is a interesting novel, a very good one. Are the characters realistic? is pinkie pure evil? Ida pure good? or is the answer more ambigious? can there be pure evil if its good for pinkie?
really, this book is one you wont be able to relate with. The problems of these characters portray good and evil on a grand scale and only later, under quite study show difficulty in distinguising between the two. A great novel, well written.
Not Greenes best... in fact one of his worst........2007-04-25
Not Greenes best... in fact one of his worst.
Criminals as catholic bigots.......2007-01-25
This fiction is extremely strange when you enter it. Bookmaking is the environment in which the novel is situated, set. But it is only a decor that determines the actions of the main hero called Pinkie (quite a derogative nickname, meaning small, the small finger and necessarily having a sexual meaning, at least in the form of innuendo) and systematically referred to by people in the novel, as well as by the narrator, as the Boy. In fact it becomes, little by little and very progressively, a novel about the psychology of this Boy. Born in the lower dregs of Brighton society, he was offered, when a totally abandoned kid, protection by a small maffioso who was « protecting » bookmakers in Brighton. This protector is killed in dubious circumstances, in fact by a competing maffioso, slightly bigger and from outside. The Boy is thus propelled into the boss's chair and he manages his business in the most murderous way : to have peace he eliminates all evidence and all witnesses. This is doubled by the fact he is a Catholic. Then the book centers on a girl who was born in the same lower dregs of society, who is a Catholic too and who falls in love with him. It is thus the exploration of this love relation between these two people. The Boy only wants her to love him and marry him so that she would not be able to say what she knows about the strange death of a journalist. Marriage is a protection for him. But a nosy lady starts putting her nose and her fingers and her eyes in this situation for circumstancial reasons that become little by little more and more ethical. I find Graham Greene does not show the real catholic dimension of the religious affiliation of these two young people. Catholics are not obsessed by damnation or hell or burning in hell. That's a real caricature coming from a rather distant past. But this fear is central for the novel because it is going to be used at every single nodal point in the plot to explain the actions of both the Boy and his girlfriend later wife. It is also difficult to accept that this girl could accept to commit suicide with him, though just before him, just for the sake of being damned with him. She appears to be more than naive, definitely feeble in the brain, simpleminded. But in the very last page of the novel she is going to find the very energy she needs to face her having survived him (read the novel to know why and how), that is to say to hope to have a child from their sexual intercourse episode on the wedding night so that she could teach the child how to pray for his or her father. This is solace in all possible ways. How can Graham Greene close his novel on the identification of this future as « the worst horror of all » ? He has not understood catholicism, methinks. She is in a way salvaged and she is provided with a godly mission in this world that will enable her to love her dead and damned husband forever. That is not horror, that is solace, motivation, divine inspiration, etc. Maybe Graham Greene is obsessed with his vision of Catholics as being entirely crushed by their vision of hell. Catholics do believe in the redemption of sins and in the mercy of God.
Dr Jacques COULARDEAU, University Paris Dauphine & University Paris 1 Pantheon Sorbonne
An unsettling and powerful (if occasionally flawed) specimen of "Catholic noir".......2006-11-17
For readers of American literature, Graham Greene's early novel "Brighton Rock" (1938) will seem an amalgamation of Dashiell Hammett and Flannery O'Connor--Catholic noir, if there can be such a genre. While reading the book, the precocious 17-year-old gangster-murderer Pinkie Brown frequently reminded me of the young, homicidal orphan Francis Tarwater from O'Connor's 1960 novel "The Violent Bear It Away," although what motivates each character is as different (and as indistinguishable) as amorally constructed evil and misguidedly twisted "grace." The atmosphere, however, often recalls the urban squalor of "The Glass Key," which had appeared as book and as film earlier in the decade, as well Hammett's other books and movies, which defined (and redefined) the genre of crime noir during the Depression. (In fact, a film critic at the time, Greene wrote "Brighton Beach" with the screen in mind.)
Although it might help to know that "Brighton Rock" is a sequel of sorts, one need not have read "A Gun for Sale" to follow the plot. You'll soon figure out that Fred Hale is a journalist-turned-informer who, in the previous book, ratted out Pinkie's gang and who meets a merciless (and undescribed) end at the opening of the novel. What makes Pinkie's evil intractable is that it is pure--both selfless and irrational, it exists for its own sake and is nearly immune to virtuous influences. But Pinkie meets his match in the characters of two women: Rose, his "girlfriend," whose innocence and innate goodness throw his wickedness for a loop, and Ida, whose unflagging sense of justice motivates her to pursue Pinkie and to protect Rose.
Greene's style and structural development in this early work is serviceable yet occasionally clunky; the novel is neither as polished as his later work nor as lean as Hammett's cinematic visualizations. (In his introduction, J. M. Coetzee agrees, tactfully noting that "Brighton Rock" is "not technically perfect.") It's not Greene's best, but it's a neglected gem nonetheless and an unexpectedly powerful exploration of good and evil.
