Book Description
A new window to local studies of interface phenomena at solid state surfaces has been opened by the development of local probe techniques such as Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) or Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and related methods during the past fifteen years. The in-situ application of local probe methods in different systems belongs to modern nanotechnology and has two aspects: an analytical aspect and a preparative aspect.
The first aspect covers the application of the local probe methods to characterize thermodynamic, structural and dynamic properties of solid state surfaces and interfaces and to investigate local surface reactions. Two methods which are still in the beginning of their development represent the second aspect: tip and cantilever. They can be used to form defined nano-objects such as molecular or atomic clusters, quantum dots etc. as well as to structure or modify solid state surfaces in the nanometer range.
This IUPAC monograph is a comprehensive treatment of both aspects and presents the current state of knowledge. It is written for scientists active in the area of nanotechnology.

Book Description
Updates the original, comprehensive introduction to the areas of mathematical physics encountered in advanced courses in the physical sciences. Intuition and computational abilities are stressed. Original material on DE and multiple integrals has been expanded.
Customer Reviews:
required for class.......2007-09-25
Boas does an excellent job presenting the new mathematical material presented in this text. The general example problems are good in the fact that they show the workings and system of the new material while giving you an understanding as well. I read the section, work out the examples and then know how to do the problems. This book is required for my theoretical physics class and is worth every penny.
Great reference text.......2007-09-14
As an undergraduate physics major I'm required to take a course in math methods of physics, and Boas is the required text. Not only did I save money by purchasing online, but this book is FANTASTIC. The text itself support the arguments we cover in class, but the book knows no bounds. In my other physics and math courses I've already looked up topics and found a complete and easily understood explanations. I'm definitely not selling this one after the course is over.
Fantastic, Self-Teachable, The Best.......2007-07-27
The single best book available for a person to learn math for the sciences. I taught myself most everything in this book readily; it is incredibly well written to introduce the subject to anyone. It is also comprehensive, and very useful for any scientist. This is written as a graduate physicist, recommended to anyone who has taken Calculus II.
The only book that ties it is Glenn Fletcher's book.
An excellent book for those who need applied mathematics........2007-04-23
This is an excellent book for undergraduates in science and engineering. This book is not for mathematics majors. So anyone who complains about the proofs or lack of rigor is off target. You are not the intended audience.
I include the chapter titles below since they indicate the coveraqe of the book.
1. Infinite series, power series
2. Complex numbers
3. Linear algebra
4. Partial differentiation
5. Multiple integrals
6. Vector analysis
7. Fourier series and transforms
8. Ordinary differential equations
9. Calculus of variations
10. Tensor analysis
11. Special functions
12. Series solutions of differential equations, legendre, bessel, hermite, and laguerre functions
13. Partial differential equations
14. Functions of a complex variable
15. Probability and statistics
Enjoy!
great book.......2007-04-22
This book is great as a crash course in alot of math that appears in physics. The material is very well explained, doesnt use alot of baffeling notation, gets straight to the point, and is completely self contained. I have learned alot from this book and I reccomend it highly.

Book Description
Despite the abundant variety of Chekhov translations available in bookstores and libraries, American directors and actors have sought out these versions by Jean-Claude van Itallie to make them the most often performed renditions on the American stage today. This edition includes "The Seagull," "Uncle Vanya," "Three Sisters," and "The Cherry Orchard."
Customer Reviews:
Original is good, reissue is bad.......2005-12-06
Before this collection of plays was reissued, it was originally presented to the reader by a translator named Ann Dunnigan. That text was released some 20 years ago. These days you are likely to find a copy of her work in a used bookstore. To that I say: Good; go and find it there.
Her translation of this literature is more than adequate. Why the publisher felt the need to drag up a man who cannot even speak or read Russian and have him 'translate' it from other texts is beyond me. As a person who reads a lot of translations from various languages, I cannot imagine the arrogance it must take to think that you can 'translate' something and 'get a feel for an author' by not even being able to read the authors work. THAT edition is not worth your time.
However, if you are lucky enough to get your hands on an original Ann Dunnigan translation, you are in for a real treat- five of Chekhovs most important works, presented in a highly readable text. The translations are crisp, though she does tend to use ellipses quite frequently. She also tends to forgo annotations which might help a western reader to understand some of what is going on in the text. A quick review of Russian history towards the end of the 19th century can really help in that area.
The plays themselves are fairly dense material, though they are indeed readable. Chekhov portrays Russian life as an endless questioning of existence- Who am I? Where am I going? and tedium- at least once in every play someone begins to complain about how bored they are.
The plays are also depressing in nature. There are only two in this collection in which someone does not die at the end and in one of those two someone ATTEMPTS to kill another. The remaining one is indeed the most touching of them all (The Cherry Orchard), though even this one presents the moral and financial death of several of its characters (who would take delight in buying a treasure from underneath anothers nose, then celebrate it to their face?). In all, the plays are good, the characters are memorable, though some of the situations feel repetitive (Ivanov and The Sea Gull seem to have the same pattern to them).
Should these facts (dense and depressing) prevent you from reading these plays? Never. If depressing material were taboo then Shakespeare would be out of the question too; who would want to read Hamlet or Romeo and Juliet? The same holds true here- you can learn a lot by reading Chekhov, by observing how masterfully he crafts situations out of day-to-day conversations between his characters. It is this fine-tuned approach which can often make Chekhov difficult for a western reader to understand; the plays are told with a bare-boned plot and revolve instead around the characters themselves and their expressions, finding meaning in the most modest of actions. For an audience that is unused to having to dig to find their truths, this can often be disconcerting.
Bottom Line: Forget the new guy and seek out the old text (it has the woodcut cover).

No heros, no talent.......2004-06-17
Living in Russia it is hard to avoid reading Chekhov. He is considered Russia's best playwright, and a foreigner in Russia is not considered to be truly educated in Russian culture until he reads Uncle Vanya, The Cherry Orchard, and The Three Sisters. This book sat on my shelf for close to two years before I finally sat down and read it. Somehow I knew it would be a struggle, and one not worth the effort. And I was certainly right.
Uncle Vanya is one of the worst plays ever written. It is awkward, stilted, and boring. Since it is only about 60 pages, it doesn't really have a chance to build up any kind of dramatic tension - not that it would have been any better had it been twice as long. The characters are forgettable, and the plot is stale.
The Cherry Orchard is slightly better, but not much. First of all, it is labeled as a comedy. I have no idea what exactly is funny about a woman who left her country after losing both her husband and her son within a month of each other, and returned five years later so financially ruined that she was forced to sell her estate.
The Three Sisters is probably the best of his works, but that's not saying much. Here, at least, there is a truly wicked character - someone to root against in the absence of someone to root for. But despite the predictably sad ending, the play is not a tragedy. It's just a real downer. Whereas a good tragedy will tweak at your heart, this play just leaves you feeling dirty.
The sad thing about Chekhov's plays is that there are no heroes, no loveable characters, no one to root for. They are perhaps of minor interest in the sense that they reflect something of Russian culture and society at the time - the beginning of the fall of the landed aristocracy, the bitterness and difficulty of life, etc. But that doesn't make up for the fact that this is bad writing, pure and simple.
Chekhov's greatest plays........2001-01-19
While other Amazon.com reviewers of Chekhov's plays have been concerned with the quality of the translation, I would like to place my emphasis on the quality of the plays. These four great plays: The Sea Gull, The Cherry Orchard, Three Sisters, and Uncle Vanya represent some of the most influential drama written at the turn of the twentieth century; their impact on the development of modern theater is well documented.
Chekhov brought drama out of its conventional Victorian setting and made human character the pivotal point of his work. Plot becomes secondary and what is important is how the various characters respond to situations which usually take place off stage. There are no convenient denouements or deus ex machinas with Checkhov. His characters are flesh and blood and do not undergo dramatic character changes during the play; they are usually the same at the end of the play as they were at the beginning.
Common threads run through these four plays. The dramas are set in provencial Russia with the recurring theme of a longing for a life that is just out of the reach of its characters. Especially moving is the masterful Three Sisters in which the sisters become more and more certain that their dream of returning to Moscow is never to be realized, and that they will spend the rest of their lives in an isolated garrison town where their talents will never be recoginized. Also, for the first time that I am aware, nature is given central stage. Chekhov takes his plays out of the drawing room and sets them in nature with detailed set descriptions describing the time of day and the nature of the weather - all of which gives his plays a palpable realism.
human nature.......2001-01-17
The five masterpieces in this collection deal with the dizzying pace of an industrializing world. Although the plays were written a hundred years ago, they are still very relevant to our modern existence. Chekov's questions about the place of class in a world in which class boundaries rapidly shift, the value of money in a world in which life has no meaning, and the meaning of existence in which experience is absurd still open our eyes to the many layers of existence which we uncover (or choose not to) every day.
In today's world, which, like Chekov's, is changing every day, it would behoove all of us to sit down for a while every day and ponder the infinite wisdom of "The Cherry Orchard" (which is in this collection) and try to understand ourselves.
The best Chekov translation for actors........2001-01-02
This is a wonderful translation and it happens to be the translation reccomended to me by Miss Joan Potter. (Voted one of the five utmost speakers on Chekov) She has traveled all over and has all the translations ever. It's an easy read compared to most translations and very actable.

Book Description
In these fresh, vibrant new translations of Chekhov's four greatest plays--Seagull, Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters, and Cherry Orchard--the brilliant theatrical translator Curt Columbus recaptures the master's open-ended simplicity. Curt Columbus loves actors and his new translations of Chekhov's four major plays are his gift to them. These are wonderfully actable, clear, and concise, and Columbus has perfectly captured Chekhov's unique blend of comic and tragic sensibilities. --Robert Falls, Artistic Director, Goodman Theatre
Customer Reviews:
The most actable translations I've read.......2005-02-18
I've been reading and studying these plays for years now, and have read through and worked out of numerous different translations. Curt Columbus' versions of these four mighty plays are exceedingly well done. They are eminently actable and highly accessible to a modern audience. Yes, he does make some small adjustments, notably choosing to call each character by one consistent name, instead of using all of the various forms. Purists may scoff, but it removes a barrier to understanding for a modern theatregoer. Highly recommended for anyone directing Chekhov or teaching it to students.

Book Description
This book includes translations of Chekhov's five major plays, "Ivanov, The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, The Three Sisters," (translated by Karl Kramer) and "The Cherry Orchard" (translated by Karl Kramer and Margaret Booker). The translations strive for accuracy and performability on the stage. The introduction treats two idiosyncratic features of Chekhov's text: the ways he employs the stage direction, "through tears," and his extensive use of ellipses for a variety of purposes. The notes and commentary seek to elucidate various references whose meaning may not be readily apparent to an English-speaking reader today. The explanatory and interpretative materials also provide a wealth of information on variants of specific lines; they give information on a number of issues where the early productions of the plays, under Konstantin Stanislavsky's direction, underwent rather perverse interpretation of Chekhov's material. Finally, the notes offer insights into particular implications of various lines in the plays.
