An excellent class book.......2001-02-10

We used this book in our Quickbooks class. Combined with the pre-entered data for some of the exercises, it was incredibly useful for learning Quickbooks.

Perhaps it is a bit dated today, but it could still be used without too much difficulty to learn bookkeeping on even the newest versions of Quickbooks.

Floppy MISSING!.......2000-05-11

The book--Computerized Accounting--comes without the floppy essential for learning. I've had a terrible time using the book without it and have tried repeatedly to get the floppy containing the Quick Book data files that Horne references throughout her book.

I have tried local bookstores unsuccessfully and called and written Horne asking to purchase the floppy. The She has not answered my calls or letter. I'm hoping Amazon.com can help me.

Otherwise, the book contains useful material and is a good help at learning accounting basics. But, without the floppy, the book is an exercise in frustration.

A reasonably good book for novices - not for professionals.......1999-03-11

I found this book lacking for my needs. I am a professional bookkeeper and was looking for a Quickbooks book that would show me some of the lesser known aspects of the product. This book kept to the basic material which you need to do the basic functions. I also forgot that the payroll part of Quickbooks is a seperate product in Australia and was irrelevant to me.

From the author: The structure and dynamics of the surfactant layer in organoclays prepared from synthetic clays (Laponites, expandable fluoromica) and in their composites with polystyrene are studied in order to understand the influence of the interface layer on composite properties and composite formation from melt or solution. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy of nitroxide-labeled surfactants is used to examine length scales between a few Angstroms and a few nanometers and time scales between 10 ps and 1 [micro]s. The nitroxide labels are stable up to at least 433 K, so that dynamics can be studied at temperatures relevant for melt intercalation. For organoclays prepared with an excess of surfactant with respect to cation exchange capacity, two or three fractions of surfactants with different mobility exist, the number of fractions, their relative amount, and the mobility differences being determined by the type of clay. Dynamics close to the region of the anchor groups depends on the type of clay and, for large clay particles, on the presence and molecular weight of polystyrene. For dispersions of organoclay in toluene-[d.sub.8], deuterium electron spin echo envelope modulation evidences penetration of solvent molecules into the surfactant layer down to the region of the anchor groups. Description:
Ultrafiltration separation of an anionic surface active agent belonging to the alkylsulfonate family was studied. Asymmetric membranes made of polyethersulfone, polysulfone, regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate and polyamide with a molecular weight cut-off equal to 5, 10 and 30 kDa were used. The temperature of tested solutions ranged from 25^oC to 55^oC. The CMC value of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) at different temperatures was determined by conductivity measurements. The influence of polymer material, membrane cut-off and surface active agent concentration on transport and separation properties of UF membranes under different temperature conditions was investigated. It was found that the SDS separation efficiency was influenced by membrane material. The membranes with the best separation characteristics were made of polysulfone and polyethersulfone. Deterioration in separation and transport properties of UF membranes with an increase of SDS concentration was observed. The temperature increase of SDS solutions resulted in a small reduction of the SDS retention coefficient. The permeate flux increased with temperature rise due to the solution viscosity decrease and thermal expansion of the membrane material.

Data for coated-wire, ion selective electrodes (ISEs) are presented for cationic surfactant ions found in common cleaners including benzyldimethyltetradecylammonium, benzyldimethyldodecylammonium, and benzyldimethylhexadecylammonium. The ion exchangers dinonylnaphthalene sulfonic acid, tetraphenyborate, and tetrakis(4-chlorophenyl)borate are examined, showing dinonylnaphthalene sulfonic acid to be the favored species. The ISEs exhibit approximately Nernstian behavior down to the 10^-^6M limit of detection with lifetimes in excess of 50 days when used continuously, and a shelf life of over 100 days. Reaching the upper detection limit at the critical micelle concentration requires use of polymeric-membrane reference electrodes including a new membrane cocktail, which allow response measurements of an order of magnitude higher than the traditional fritted-glass reference electrode. The surfactant ISEs show excellent selectivity over the common metal ions Na^+, K^+, Mg^2^+, Ca^2^+, and Cu^2^+ with selectivity coefficients less than 10^-^5^.^3. The ISEs are also selective over the lower molecular weight quaternary ammonium ions tetradecyltrimethylammonium, dodecyltrimethylammonium, benzyldimethyl(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium, and tetrabutylammonium with selectivity coefficients ranging from 10^-^1^.^7 to 10^-^5^.^5. Use of a single electrode to determine accurately the total cationic surfactant concentration in common cleaning solutions is accomplished with information about concentration dependent interferences and a modified Nikolsky-Eisenman model. Finally, quaternary ammonium surfactants have a deleterious effect on the measurements of pH and common ions like K^+, Mg^2^+ and Ca^2^+ with polymeric ISEs. This makes it critical to include surfactant electrodes in a detector array when cleaning agents are present.

The objective of the study was to investigate the influence of membrane material, membrane cut-off, transmembrane pressure and surface active agent concentration on transport and separation properties of ultrafiltration membranes. Intersep Nadir membranes, made of polyethersulfone, polysulfone, regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate and polyamide were used in experiments. The applied pressure varied from 0.05 to 0.20 MPa. The concentration of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) in model solutions was below its critical micelle concentration (in the range of 5-600 g/m^3). It was found that membranes made of regenerated cellulose and cellulose acetate were less susceptible to fouling than polysulfone and polyamide ones. With increasing membrane cut-off, the value of fouling index decreased. It was also observed that membrane permeability and SDS rejection deteriorated with an increase in SDS concentrations in the tested solutions. The SDS separation efficiency varied from 15 to 80%.

Short-term traffic volume data are characterized by rapid and intense fluctuations with frequent shifts to congestion. Currently, research in short-term traffic forecasting deals with these phenomena either by smoothing them or by accounting for them by nonlinear models. But, these approaches lead to inefficient predictions particularly when the data exhibit intense oscillations or frequent shifts to boundary conditions (congestion). This paper offers a set of tools and methods to assess on underlying statistical properties of short-term traffic volume data, a topic that has largely been overlooked in traffic forecasting literature. Results indicate that the statistical characteristics of traffic volume can be identified from prevailing traffic conditions; for example, volume data exhibit frequent shifts from deterministic to stochastic structures as well as transitions between cyclic and strongly nonlinear behaviors. These findings could be valuable in the implementation of a variable prediction strategy according to the statistical characteristics of the prevailing traffic volume states.
