This is a graduate level text that fills in the missing steps that a typical class on linear regression does not cover. Required reading for the Ph.D. student that wants a thorough understanding of linear models. Not for the mathematically week at heart but definitely understandable to engineering and science students at the graduate level.

"Because all things are forgotten in the end." And this shouldn't be.
The life of a Latin teacher at an English grammar school, "a good school of the second rank," doesn't seem to be the most promising foundation for a novel, but Hilton creates a wonderful character in GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS. In this slim novel, a life of service is examined, and with each vignette, the gentle nature of Chips and the sadness and triumphs of his life are gradually revealed without fanfare, rather they take on an air of grace reflecting the character's own personality. With its brevity and lack of detail, this doesn't fall into the category of a "great novel," but rather a great character is revealed, one that deserves to be remembered.

An easy to read Classic .......2007-04-11

Still waiting for the DVD (the movie starring Peter O' Toole was a true masterpiece), I have been surprised by this enchanting book. It's obviousily "out of time" if you analize the told story, but of course each and every teacher outhere, sometimes feels she or he could be in some way like the old mr. Chips.

In Goodbye, Mr Chips, James Hilton presents a carefully-observed and beautifully-drawn portrait of the teacher whom we wish we all had. Mr Chipping, better known as Chips, was a Latin teacher and headmaster at Brookfield School, at which he has spent his entire working-life and become an institution within the institution as a result. In this book, Mr Chips looks back over his life, and remembers the events, the woman and the thousands of boys that formed a part of it.

A slender volume of only 132 pages, Goodbye, Mr Chips moves rapidly through the decades of its protagonist's life, alluding to events, touching on incidents, recounting anecdotes, seldom dwelling on the details. Hilton writes with a light touch; his prose is sensitive and delicate, like an artist making a pencil-sketch of a person whom he loves. Unsurprisingly, some critics have suggested that Mr Chips is a composite of Hilton's own headmaster father and his popular Latin teacher.

Nonetheless, despite the brevity of the volume and the relative scarcity of details, Mr Chips succeeds where so many other fictional characters fail: he lives and breathes. That is why I always cry when I reach the end of the novel. Judging by the letters that Hilton received from readers who knew their own Mr Chips, I doubt that I'm alone.

Touching and emotional.......2006-11-15

Good-bye, Mr. Chips is a very emotional and touching book written by James Hilton. It is about a retired schoolteacher thinking his back his life, teaching students. He begins his story (or tenure) at Brookfield in 1870, just as the Franco-Prussian War breaks out. The story goes through many emotions, which some include: love, happiness, sadness, joy, and more. If you want emotion, read this book!
