Given a family P={P"1,...,P"m} of m polygonal regions (possibly intersecting) in the plane, we consider the problem of locating a straight line @? intersecting the convex hull of P and such that min"kd(P"k,@?) is maximal. We give an algorithm that solves the problem in time O((m^2+nlogm)logn) using O(m^2+n) space, where n is the total number of vertices of P"1,...,P"m. The previous best running time for this problem was O(n^2) [J. Janardan, F.P. Preparata, Widest-corridor problems, Nordic Journal of Computing 1 (1994) 231-245]. We also improve the known complexity for several variants of this problem which include a three dimensional version - the maximin plane problem -, the weighted problem and considering measuring distance different to the Euclidean one.

"I just finished The Ghosts of Makara. I think it should be required reading in every history class in New Zealand. It is an interesting account of time past; it is remarkable that you remembers your childhood so clearly. I enjoyed your aside about "Treasonably my Haitian-born wife suggested years later that New Zealanders didn't know how to season lamb and used mint sauce to hide the strong taste!" The pages about "the sudden sense of cold realism, the realization that life was not a game" really hits one with their own memories. And your feeling about the Pamir, "The magic of this windjammer, sails billowing in the trade winds still evokes that thrill more than 50 years later." Beautiful writing.

The Ghosts of Makara.......2002-10-21

This book is easy to read and full of color. I have been to Makara and this vivid description of the Makara of yesteryear reads like a movie. I enjoyed it and felt that as I read, I could taste the nostalgic loss of a reality that in some ways was a paradise and in others must have been hell. Although the story takes place in a far away land this could have been anywhere in the world. I recommend this very personal family account, as the story could easily be yours or mine.

The Stone Court—the Court that Roosevelt tried to “pack”—played a vital role in the history of the Great Depression, World War II, and Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidency. The Court also provided a bridge to the new civil liberties jurisprudence of the Warren Court.

The book reveals that the Stone Court gave its approval to a considerable expansion of executive powers, particularly in the conduct of foreign affairs and economic policy initiatives. It also solidified the evolution of judiciary self-restraint—the deference of the judiciary to the elected branches. Perhaps its most lasting legacy was the expansion of constitutionally protected rights, including the laying of the foundation for subsequent Court rulings on segregation and discrimination.
