4 out of 5 stars Become a coach or mentor.......2000-12-28

One of the most talked about methods of developing your people - coaching and mentoring - has emerged as a leading way to accelerate your team's performance. In a world of constant change the role of the management coach or mentor has taken on a formidable mantel.

Many of the top business people of our time have been able to achieve so much so quickly because of the role that coaches and mentors have played in their development. Why has coaching and mentoring become so important for corporate success? Why do so many individuals and organisations value the role it can play? These are just some of the issues tackled by Parsloe and Wray.

In this new book they provide a practical and informative insight into how to develop methods of mentoring in real company situations. They chart the rise of mentoring as a method of accelerated learning. They sketch the `big picture' highlighting the move to the mainstream of mentoring as a method.

The book covers both the theory and practice of coaching and mentoring, ranging from the world of work to education and community action. Parsloe and Wray do a good job of demonstrating how important it is to relate theoretical models to real life situations. In a readable and accessible style, the authors offer insights into matching staff with appropriate mentors, ways of providing constructive feedback and they demonstrate effective questioning techniques. For Parsloe and Wray the learning organisation is here to stay and there is a key role to play for coaching and mentoring. Continuous change requires continuous learning and the role the mentor can play in ensuring accelerated performance is unique.

The book provides seven golden rules for effective mentoring and coaching in organisations. Many organisations will find such a practical and simple approach effective for them. With checklists and guides to best practice this book is a must for anyone who has responsibility for staff development.

The Children's Space Atlas takes children on a voyage of Discovery from the creation of the stars and planets to the latest findings from probes and Satellites, states Robbin Kerrod on the top cover of this black bg book. Easy to follow star charts showing major constellation, story of the creation of the stars and planets told in words and pictures and exploring the whole universe is so much fun and interesting while kids learn the mystery of nature. The IMAX movies on space are sure thrilling to watch but the book is indepth knowledge and exploring page to page! It's divided into 5 sections:

Section 1: Introduction on Earth and space and boundless universe
Section 2: The solar system - The sun, moon, planets, Asteroids and meteoroids, comets, etc
Section 3: The night sky i.e. the heavens, constellations
                          Section 4: Stars and Galaxies
Section 5: Exploring space, Telescopes, space satellites, space flights, exploring moon and so on.

Now that its so interesting, I remember me registering mine and my family's name to go to Mars through the nasa website and the names would be included in a DVD that went to Mars with Rover Opportunity - Its so thrilling to explore the Space Atlas by many kids with hopes to book a flat on Mars some day! A good Pick and dreamy explorations too!

                          5 out of 5 stars I liked this book.......1998-04-05

I am in the 3rd grade and I got this book from our school library (Plains Ele.) in Timberville, VA. I like the part where it shows all the missions on the moon. I like the real life pictures and graphics. I want to be a scientist when I grow up and would like to observe the planets and stars. I picked this book up because of the pictures I saw on the cover. I thought it would give me information on planets, stars, galaxies and the universe, and it did. That's about all I would like to say. Please tell the author he did a great job. Your pal, Weston Marcus

                              Book Description

The emphasis in this text is on classical electromagnetic theory and electrodynamics, that is, dynamical solutions to the Lorentz-force and Maxwell's equations. The natural appearance of the Minkowski spacetime metric in the paravector space of Clifford's geometric algebra is used to formulate a covariant treatment in special relativity that seamlessly connects spacetime concepts to the spatial vector treatments common in undergraduate texts. Baylis' geometrical interpretation, using such powerful tools as spinors and projectors, essentially allows a component-free notation and avoids the clutter of indices required in tensorial treatments. The exposition is clear and progresses systematically - from a discussion of electromagnetic units and an explanation of how the SI system can be readily converted to the Gaussian or natural Heaviside-Lorentz systems, to an introduction of geometric algebra and the paravector model of spacetime, and finally, special relativity. Other topics include Maxwell's equation(s), the Lorentz-force law, the Fresnel equations, electromagnetic waves and polarization, wave guides, radiation from accelerating charges and time-dependent currents, the Liénard-Wiechert potentials, and radiation reaction, all of which benefit from the modern relativistic approach. Numerous worked examples and exercises dispersed throughout the text help the reader understand new concepts and facilitate self-study of the material. Each chapter concludes with a set of problems, many with answers. Complete solutions are also available. An excellent feature is the integration of Maple into the text, thereby facilitating difficult calculations. The problem is twofold: to understand and to develop a framework to use E&M. I do not feel that this book adequately addresses either problem.

Instead, this book spends a lot of time developing a Clifford Algebra approach and the attendant notation. Very little physical feel; or, for that matter, very little calculation at all. This looks more like a pure math text than a physics book. There are few drawings or other geometric things that relate to the real world. This subject is hard enough without loading much more notation on it.

2 out of 5 stars An awkward geometric approach.......2004-08-01

This book on electrodynamics presents an awkward geometric approach.

Indeed, electromagnetic theory is inherently relativistic -- although it is usually introduced in a nonrelativistic formalism that uses the elementary Gibbsian approach to vectors.

The author intends to avoid the tensor notation -- because it tends to disguise the corresponding geometrical significance. But he also intends to avoid spaces of nondefinite metric by using paravectors in a Clifford algebra with dimension n=3. In fact, in this process, he needs to introduce a complex structure where trivectors become imaginary scalars, bivectors are written as imaginary vectors, and every element of the algebra is a paravector -- the sum of a scalar and a vector, both of which may be complex.

One should recognize that the author has grasped the problem; his solution is, nevertheless, foggy. All in all, one cannot say -- quoting Arnold Sommerfeld -- that "the true mathematical structure of these entities will appear only now, as in a mountain landscape when the fog lifts".

Much ado about nothing: I recommend, instead, other geometric algebras that don't shy away from using indefinite metrics -- but avoid the clumsiness of complex structures.

Indeed, the real algebra of complex numbers is already an example of a Clifford algebra: "the geometric view of complex numbers is connected with the structure of C as a real algebra, and not so much as a field" (Pertti Lounesto).

David Hestenes shows how this can be done.

                              1 out of 5 stars Necessary evil.......2003-10-03

In the lack of a good books on Geometric algebra and calculus (in David Hestenes' style) for physicists, the book on electrodynamics by W. Baylis looks like a Necessary evil.

The publishers did thier best to make the book at least look good. Unfortunately, the author could do better.

The annoying 'americanisms' and often inappropriate 'pseudo-scientific jargon' did not help the book.

Poor understanding of physics (not saying the geometrica algebra and analysis) is very surprising and unfortunate for the university professor.

However, with some work on the part of the reader, the book could be somewhat useful. A lot of examples and exercises is also helpful.

Highly recommend to compare Mr. Baylis' style with clear and thoughtful style of David Hestenes (see his "New foundations for physics". Unfortunately the price for that is VERY high ~ $250 )

Again, the book could be much better, but in the said vacuum, is a Necessary evil. Buy it ! ( if you have some spare money and not afraid of the strangers with professor titles)

                              5 out of 5 stars It's about time!.......2000-01-20

Maxwell's theory of Electrodynamics is considerably more complicated than Newton's Mechanics. The latter deals with concrete objects (particles, rigid bodies, etc.) while the former deals with intangible "fields" distributed in space, a concept that took many years to evolve and gain acceptance. It is therefore not surprising that Electrodynamics has motivated a variety of important scientific developments, designed either to simplify it conceptually or to make it consistent with Mechanics. In physics, fundamental contradictions between Electrodynamics and Mechanics spurred Einstein to develop Special Relativity. In mathematics, the most well-known development is vector analysis, introduced by Gibbs to simplify Maxwell's equations. Unfortunately, the even deeper simplifications introduced by Hamilton (based on quaternions) and Clifford (based on Clifford algebra) have not gained wide acceptance because they are somewhat more technically demanding. Thus almost all physics and engineering textbooks on electrodynamics use vector analysis, and very few students and researchers are even aware of the tremendous power offered by quaternionic and Clifford analysis.

In this regard, the book by Baylis is a real blessing. By choosing the simplest geometric algebra (complex quaternions, known in quantum mechanics as the Pauli algebra), Baylis manages to use the full power of Clifford algebra without giving up the familiar notation of vector analysis (gradient, curl, divergence). The only new ingredient is the associative product of two vectors, which unifies their inner product and their cross product and leads to tremendous new possibilities. Students and workers in the field will love the resulting beauty and simplicity, and especially the continuity of notation and concepts with the mainstream literature. Although the Pauli algebra is usually associated with nonrelativistic quantum mechanics, Baylis amply demonstrates that it is equally able to handle relativistic aspects (such as the unified electromagnetic field and Lorentz transformations) when the concept of three-dimensional vectors is replaced by four-dimensional (space-time) "paravectors." Well done!

A memorable experience is in store for the reader of David Davidar's The House of Blue Mangoes. In a similar fashion to Vikram Seth's A Suitable Boy, Davidar's ambitious novel set in India relates many stories in one, each ineluctably merging into the other. We are shown three generations of an old family in the oceanside village of Chevathar. The patriarch Solomon strives to maintain equilibrium as caste struggles begin to create harsh conflict in the village, while his sons endure triumph and disaster as India inaugurates its battle for independence and his grandson, who may be the last of the line, undertakes his own bid for independence. All of these characters are drawn with a mercurial vividness, and Davidar has a Tolstoyan sense of the larger canvas--his epic covers the spectrum of heroes and rogues, clans and dynasties, the ugly and the beautiful.

The narrative, alternately measured and hectic, richly weaves together assassinations and passionate affairs, exorcisms and beggars' banquets. Davidar's models are often stories from India's great epics, but the fascination of the everyday is never overlooked, from making a perfect cup of tea to whipping up a flavorsome biryani. Along with the tribulations of the protagonists, we are shown the various strategies Mahatma Gandhi and Winston Churchill used in their battles, and we see how the English memsahibs played their part in the downfall of the Raj. The mangoes of India, a key image in the novel, suggest the heady, ripe taste of this engrossing and thoroughly individual novel. --Barry Forshaw, Amazon.co.uk

                              Book Description

In 1899, in the south Indian village of Chevathar, Solomon Dorai is contemplating the imminent destruction of his world and everything he holds dear. As the thalaivar, or headman, of Chevathar, he seeks to preserve the village from both catastrophe and change, and the decisions he makes will mark his family for generations to come.

A gripping family chronicle, The House of Blue Mangoes spans nearly half a century and three generations of the Dorai family as they search for their place in a rapidly changing society. The novel brings vividly to life a small corner of India, while offering a stark indictment of colonialism and reflecting with great poignancy on the inexorable social transformations of the subcontinent.

This book was a gift from a friend whose judgment I respect. I tell myself that he must have recommended it because he only read Part 1. Indeed, this book's first 100 or so pages are terrific stuff, well written, descriptive, exciting, dramatic passages about caste hatred at the end of the 19th century in the south of India. I thought I had a great book on my hands: good characters, good descriptions, good action, and lots of interest. But then I went on to Part 2 and it's as if the world had spun around 180 degrees. The writing became turgid, dull, forced, absurd, uninteresting, and even pointless in many places. I ran out of energy to go on, but forced myself forward, hoping for the fireworks that started the whole thing off, only to be sorely disappointed. At Part 3, I admit I simply skimmed through to the end because I knew the author was taking the "plot" to the next generation of characters and, frankly, I didn't care much about the author's characterless, flat parodies of people anymore. I blame the publisher for not more firmly editing the material and for not giving the author constructive criticism and firm direction. But there are few good editors, just as there are precious few good writers out there. I think Davidar has a gift, but it needs direction. I hope he finds it.

In the past two decades there have been some wonderful novels written by Indian authors, but none of them were based/set against the background of Tamil Nadu's history. Vikram Seth's tome, "A Suitable Boy," was set against the backdrop of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, while Arundati Roy's "God of Small Things," was set in Kerala.

Publisher turned writer David Davidar's book "The House of Blue Mangoes," nicely fills that lacuna. Davidar deftly weaves South history and culture into the narrative that is set in the fictional town of Chevathar located in the southern most tip of India.

The novel chronicles the tragedies and triumphs of the powerful Dorai family: Solomon, Daniel, Aaron and Kannan. The panoramic story begins in the close of the 19th century and ends in 1947 when Indian became independent.

Davidar's skill as a storyteller is evident and the novel makes for an absorbing read. Also his interest and keen eye for research is reflected in this historical novel.

Family sagas are the form of fiction I like the most so I was expecting a lot from this novel and I'm glad it didn't let me down. I was happily engrossed in the travails (and occasional joys) of the Dorai family for several days. This is not to say this is a depressing book, on the contrary you come away from it feeling pretty good, not least because the author writes wonderfully well.

                              5 out of 5 stars Steve Abel.......2003-10-16

As the other reviewers have described, this is a family saga like The Glass Palace or A Suitable Boy. It does an excellent job of setting the family story within the historical context of colonialism and nationalism.

For me, however, the beauty of The House of Blue Mangoes is in capturing the texture of the deep South, an area that is much neglected in Indian literature. Mr. Davidar's evocation of the food, the vegetation and landscape, and the people of Thirunelveli and Kanya Kumari is a valuable addition to Indian literature. I must admit to a certain prejudice in that I served in the Peace Corps near Nagercoil many years ago.

David Davidar has apparently never heard of the saying "less is more." His book has every cliche that you can connect with India -- the caste system, extended families, wretched poverty, etc, etc. Of course, all these exist, but they should be included in a book only if they further the story. Perhaps that is just the problem. Davidar has a hard time getting a believable story together.

Stick to publishing, Davy baby! Leave writing to those who have the talent.
