Lives up to its title.......2004-08-09

Foshay and associates have succeeded in the task described in the subtitle of this work. This book has three parts: 1. Introduction to the Cognitive Approach; 2. How to Design Lessons using the Cognitive Approach; 3. Using the Cognitive Approach: The Research Issues.

The book itself is an excellent illustration of the techniques that it intends to teach, starting with how to organize and present information (chapter 4). Then individual chapters deal with teaching facts (5), teaching concepts (6), teaching principles and mental models (7), teaching well-structured problem solving (8), teaching ill-structured problem solving (9), and teaching troubleshooting (10). The early chapters lay down the principles underlying the cognitive point of view on how learning occurs (1) and how to design training using the cognitive model described (2). The final chapters get into research issues related to teaching both declarative knowledge (13) and procedural knowledge (14) -- a critical distinction in the teaching of technology (my own area of interest) and for other areas of practical learning. Declarative knowledge is knowledge about something; procedural knowledge is knowledge of how to do something.

Strongly recommended.

Telecommunication systems and human-machine interfaces start employing multiple microphones and loudspeakers in order to make conversations and interactions more lifelike, hence more efficient. This development gives rise to a variety of acoustic signal processing problems under multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) scenarios, encompassing distant speech acquisition, sound source localization and tracking, echo and noise control, source separation and speech dereverberation, and many others.

Acoustic MIMO Signal Processing is divided into two major parts - the theoretical and the practical. There are many child-rearing books out there. Bernadine's book is not based on theory or the latest parenting magazine's idea of bringing up children. Her thoughts brim from her own life experience and the book reflects this. The funny anecdotes of her own children are sprinkled throughout the book and will bring a chuckle to any parent. The frank testimonies of her four grown children are refreshing as we see that although they do not intimate that they grew up in a perfect home, they show how the wisdom and the goals of their parents are now guideposts for not only their lives but their children's lives as well. "The proof is in the pudding" -- the old saying goes -- and Bernadine's real life advice strikes true as it is read.

This book helps to clarify the nickname of my great-great uncle. He is very well known in southeastern Kentucky. However, the Bad in his nickname leads people to think poorly of him. However, he did alot of good for the area.

It is an easy, enjoyable read. I purchased 2 copies. One for myself and one for my aunt. She said she learned things that she had never known before about John.
