I as terminated without warning 5 months after my employer learned I suffered from MS, I had been employed for 6 years without a single disciplinary issue.
After reading this book I felt confident I had a discrimination case, The book is easy to understand, written in "plain English",
I contacted Rich Busse, and he now is representing me in my suit.
This book is a must read if you have questions concerning your employee rights.

Well-written, factual book.......2006-02-25

I was in junior high school when the Green River Killer was making his rounds. I remember watching about it on the TV news. While books have been written about the case, I was waiting until it had been solved to read about it. When I saw this book, I knew this was the one I would finally purchase because it was written by someone who actually had worked the case, not an outsider.

This book is excellent--it is very well written, concise, and full of factual evidence. It also shows that we in law enforcement are humans and have feelings, too. We just often have to set them aside while we deal with horrible incidents.

I am a dispatcher at a sheriff's office in a western state. I was almost finished with the book when I brought it to work with me. Within minutes of its discovery, co-workers were calling out dibs on who got to read it next. One deputy even called me on the radio to ask if I was finished reading it yet!

So, this book is making the rounds at our office. And, everyone agrees with me that it is a VERY GOOD book.

Namu the Killer Whale played a part in my childhood, as my father was one of the divers that helped bring Namu to Seattle from Canada. Ted's Aquarium was a popular place for our family, since dad did so much work with Ted, not only in regards to Namu, but helping to find other specimens for the displays.

Great book!.......2004-05-13

This is a very interesting story and funny. Definitely worth reading. You learn a lot about the Killer Whale and human interaction with them in this book.

A wannabe hero cashes in.......2007-06-15

I've read a lot about the Green River case, and almost every recounting, aside from this one, paints Reichert as as much a part of the problem as the solution in this protracted case. His early mistakes, and his myopic fascination with suspect Melvyn Foster are often credited with confounding the search for the real killer. Reichert, while obviously passionate about the case, seems to get caught up in his own political aspirations at the expense of his objectivity about the case. And for him to take so much credit for apprehending Ridgway -- 14 years after he'd gone off the case -- seems like a calculated attempt to curry favor with potential voters. I guess it worked -- he got elected -- but to me he comes off as overly ambitious and more than a little closed minded.

Great Book.......2006-03-21

I really enjoyed this book. I found the writing easy to read and it flowed well. There were parts that did not needed to be included in the book. At times I think the author felt he had to explain his situation in times it was convenient for him. I felt it was an unnecessary addition to the true story.
In the end, I would read this book again!

Wonderful Campaign Propaganda.......2005-12-31

I am absolutely fascinated by the fact that so many people have been captivated by this book. This book was simply a campaign ploy for Reichert to elevate himself into congress. The timing of the book came as he was running for congress and allowed him to make tons of TV appearances that aided his campaign. The book is as much fiction as it is a true account. The purpose of the book was to portray an image of a man who was running for congress. Reichert was never the head of the task force, and he was only on the task force for nine years, not twenty! The man whom his peers call selfish and unable to give credit to others, exemplifies this in this incredible book. He did have a ghost writer and even fails to mention that as he once again takes all the credit himself. I wish he was at least honest and admit that he never believed Ridgeway was the killer because he passed a polygraph test and instead always pinned his hopes on an innocent man Melvyn Foster.... nice work Congressman Reichert

Chasing the Devil--an excellent title.......2005-08-05

I read CHASING THE DEVIL with great interest, after reading the book by Carlton Smith and Tomas Guillen, the two reporters from the Seattle Times who spent many years covering the case for the newspaper. I wanted to read Reichert's book to get a law enforcement official's perspective on the search for this elusive madman who was killing young girls in Seattle, WA. Many of these girls were runaways with drug and alcohol problems, and many had probably suffered sexual abuse and had left home to escape a traumatic situation, only to encounter brutality on the streets.

Reichert is the antithesis of the killer. He is a straightforward, law-abiding citizen with deep religious beliefs and roots. His grandfather was a minister and he himself had considered going into the ministry while he was a student at a Lutheran college. However, he chose law enforcement instead, and clearly it was a good choice. His belief that the killer had to be hunted down and found, regardless of cost or anything else, shows that Reichert is a man of strong conviction. Reichert's personality comes out clearly in the book. He has great respect for humanity and believed that the murders of these girls had to be avenged. His facial expression in the photo where Ridgway appears in court in 2001 shows that the murders greatly affected him.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about how law enforcement officials have to operate, in real-world scenarios, unlike on TV, where murder investigations cannot be wrapped up in just one hour. I felt CHASING THE DEVIL was an apt title for the book, as Ridgway clearly is one.

not perfect but darn good.......2005-05-12

Give Reichart a break, he's a detective, not a writer. I found this to be quite the page-turner even though the reader already knows who the Green River killer was and that he has been caught and imprisoned. I too was surprised at the number of people he named, but I thought it was a good account of how a crime affects an ever-widening circle of people, and how a detective himself as well as his family is affected by a case that continues for years. I salute Reichart for his dedication to duty and for this book. Authoring this book has likely helped him deal with issues regarding this case.

Ignore the blood-and-guts title, this is a fascinating history of disease eradication. Chapters on Pacific Island Kuru, smallpox, hepatitis, and the scientists involved. Tone is neither talking-down to us uninitiated nor scientific jargon. Great for a med student, a child with an inquiring mind, to take on a trip.

too much standard Fourier non-wavelet material.......2005-09-24

Wavelets have been making a splash in some circles. Here is a chance to acquire a rigorous education in them. Basically, wavelets are a topic in advanced Fourier analysis, as the book makes clear. In fact, of the book's 3 parts, one is a recap of basic Fourier analysis. It is somewhat of a pity that the author included it. The coverage is a synopsis of standard texts on Fourier analysis. Omitting it would have left more space for wavelets.

Along these lines, the last part, on computation and design of wavelets, has one of its three chapters being a standard discussion about Fourier transforms.

Of the book's 9 chapters, only 5 are on wavelets. Too few.

I enrolled in an online graduate course for wavelets and could not understand the book and the professor liked to give very few problems with very little help to ensure that he would not have to grade many problems and to ensure that we would not understand the material well. I searched the web and checked out about 10 wavelet book in the library and still I could not get a clue on wavelets in how they actually worked and the mathematics behind them.

But, ... with Yves' book, ... it does still take some mental effort, but his book is readable and the homework assignments are doable without an instructor leading you or mis-leading you as the case may be.

Wavelets applications fascinate me and without Yves book, I still wouldn't have a clue.

Excellent........2001-08-12

The book is excellent in the sense that it has the right mixture of both theoretic and practical aspects. The portions on Fourier transforms also are apt for a newcomer to understand the theory. Of course, the first impression formed by seeing the title is that the matter inside would be plain english without any mathematics. However, the mathematics in the book has been kept elementary and in places where that wasn't possible, a thorough introduction has been provided.

The applications are explicitly mentioned and algorithms are written down clearly, instead of simply providing the theory and leaving the implementation for the student to figure out for himself. For the less mathematically oriented, the exercises at the end of each chapter will provide a good intuition to what will be encountered in the consequent sections. Once this book is read, other books that concentrate on specific aspects of wavelets will appear to be more understandable.

The complex cannot be made easy, but it can be made clear.......2001-02-21

When I first saw this book, which is heavy on equations, I thought "wow, if this is wavelets made easy, I'd hate to see the hard version". And indeed this book is not light reading. But it is clear and there are plenty of examples. This book is far and away the best book on wavelets that I've found.
Wavelets are a complex topic. It would be unfair to think that you can pick up a book like this an read it like a popular science book. Reading a book like this takes concentration and effort. Implementing wavelet software is even more work, since some of the "in-place" algorithms are difficult. "Wavelets Made Easy" is a great foundation for anyone who wants to apply Haar wavelets for data analysis and filtering.

Nievergelt's coverage of Daubechies wavelets is not as
good as his coverage of Haar. He clearly explains the matrix
(linear algebra) view of Daubechies wavelets. The
coverage of edge effect issues is also good. However, as the
chapter proceeds, it fell apart, at least for me. There
appear to be errors in some of the algorithms. For example,
Nievergelt uses an average of the input time series over the
Daubechies wavelet. As far as I can see, this average cannot
be inverted to yield the original time series. Nievergelt's
Daubechies algorithm also does not seem to match algorithms
like the one published in Numerical Recipies.

So in summary, I'd say that this is a book that started out
well in the first few chapters but became less useful as
I worked through it.

wavelet made easy.......2000-06-06

This is an excellent book. Wavelet IS a quite advanced concept in Math. The author did a good job to minimize the math backgrond needed to understand wavelet. DON'T BLAM author because you have way too little math training.
