Book Description
Dealing with conflict, handling difficult situations, and getting the most out of difficult people can be the most challenging tasks of any manager or team leader. This book shows how to implement processes for resolving workplace conflict in a way that will leave all participants feeling that they have had a win-or at least feeling that their concerns are acknowledged and that the final solution to the problem is fair, reasonable, and agreeable.
Customer Reviews:
Helpful Read!.......2005-04-08
A useful book for learning how to deal with workplace conflict, based on the premise that one should focus on the people involved in the conflict, rather than the tasks themselves. The book encourages the reader/supervisor to accept conflict as inevitable, and that rather than apportioning blame and imposing solutions/quoting workplace rules, one should bring the parties together and ascertain the _facts_ before seeking agreement between the parties (in the case of mediation).
Explores the main methods of conflict resolution and their respective pros and cons (e.g. mediation/negotiation/arbitration).
The final chapter contains a number of exercises for the reader to practise. Probably directed at Team Leaders/Supervisors, but equally helpful for employees who simply want a better understanding of workplace conflict and possible solutions.
Average customer rating:
- A great simplification of a very complex problem.
- a sophisticated conceptualization of the medical task

How Doctors Think
ASIN: 0763701432 |
Book Description
This collection of essays written by David M. Eddy, one of America's leading medical scholars, was originally published in The Journal of the American Medical Association. It lays out a unified theory and offers practical recommendations for responding to the changing environment in which medicine is practiced. The essays address such issues as physician uncertainty, guidelines, patient preferences, outcomes, evidence-based medicine, the cost problem, the balance between quality and cost, physician responsibilities, and rationing. This book will be a valuable resource to anyone who is interested in the quality and cost of health care.
Customer Reviews:
A great simplification of a very complex problem........1999-01-12
This is as good if not better than being in a classroom with the author. The information is handled in a very logical and sequential manner. The examples clarify learning. I have purchased several copies for my friends.
a sophisticated conceptualization of the medical task.......1998-06-25
This compilation of essays previously published in JAMA is a brilliant sophisticated, clinically based intimate account of how modern medical knowledge, epidemiology and logic can be applied to the practice of medicine. It is clear and very readable. It has many insights, some of which are at first counterintuitive. It provides an unsurpassed answers to both the commercial "cost benefit analyses" of market managed care and the idiosyncratic academic/fee for service biases of traditional American medicine. A must read for any physician who wants a sophisticated approach to his/her vocation. Jeoffry B. Gordon, MD, MPH paradocs2@home.com

Customer Reviews:
Really nice set!.......2002-02-19
I picked up this book ...., thinking it'd make a great present for a child... but then I decided to open it myself and have a look.
The holograms are OK -- not spectacular, but nice enough and would probably impress a child. However, the books are nice for novice stargazers. The books tell a child how to go about readying for an evening looking into the night sky, even mentioning safety issues and common sense things like having permission to go out at night. It explains a bit about the way we see the sky (btw, the book is geared toward North America), why the constellations in the North go around in a circle, yet those toward the South rise and set, where to find interesting things to look at using the naked eye or binoculars, and even what to do when the inevitible occurs, and the little red flashlight that comes with the kit stops working.
Using the book, I found the Orion Nebula and would think that any child of 8 or 10 could do the same. I never would have known that the smudge as it describes it, in that particlar area of the sky was a nebula! And there are other objects to look for which I've yet to do.
There's enough science, myth and history in the booklets to give a good overview of astronomy, particularly about the most famous constellations. Overall, a very nice book, written in plain english, to get a child with an interest moving in the right direction. Add binoculars or a telescope and who knows where your budding scientist might end up!

Customer Reviews:
Modern Fluoropolymers.......2003-07-27
This book is a comprehensive monograph on fluoropolymers, which are one of the fastest growing segment of polymeric materials. In general, it is well written and it covers the field very well. The editor himself and the authors he selected are known experts in their respective fields. It definitely is the first book on the subject dealing with practically all commercial and developmental fluoropolymers. It has the greatest value for someone already familiar with the science and technology of polymers in general and of fluoropolymers in particular.
..........2001-07-11
This book is a great resource if you want to understand the mathematics and physics of polymers. I zeroed in on Teflon FEPs applications and found it to be the best source of info that exists anywhere. I wish there was more information on extrusion and rhealogy methods for polymers covered. Overall I am glad I bought the book, and it is a great addition to my engineering library.

Book Description
This Seventh Edition maintains the all the winning qualities that have made A FIRST COURSE IN DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS WITH MODELING APPLICATIONS a best-seller over the years. Written in a straightforward, helpful, not-too-theoretical manner Zill's approach keeps students with differing levels firmly in mind. The new edition strikes a perfect balance between the teaching of traditional content and the incorporation of evolving technology.
Customer Reviews:
good stuff.......2007-08-24
the picture for this ad didn't match the cover of the book so i took a chance in buying it, because the isbn numbers matched. the book was correct and the time and condition in which it was recieved was great
Way under rated!!.......2007-05-27
I'm not sure why everyone thinks this book isn't any good. I bought this book for my differential equations class, and thought it was great! I found that the strong point in this book is that the author actually goes through and explains the concept in great detail before any examples are given (unlike most math text, including DEQ books). It helped me a lot because once the author got to an example I felt like I understood what was going on instead of having to go through the example two or three times before I had any idea about the theory involved in the topic. I also found the homework problems to be extremely well planned--almost every problem ended in a tidy compact solution (with the exception of the series solutions to the ODEs which were not nice at all).
I give the book only four stars because of two weaknesses: 1) the derivations of some of the formulas are a bit vague (I had a good time going throw and filling in missing steps and/or writing alternative derivations in the ridiculously large margins of the text) and 2) the RCL circuit was not explained well enough to be workable (I took electromagnetism the same semester and my physics teacher openly mocked the explanation of the RCL circuit in this book).
Overall, I thought this book was great and I was very happy with it. Maybe not the best book if you're trying to learn physics concepts, but it's a math class what do expect?
looking for other introductory DE books? .......2007-04-29
I used an earlier version of Zill years ago to get through my DE course. It was much better than the required text by Boyce/Diprima (a book to be avoided like the plague).
I've listed most, if not all, of the available introductory DE books in my review of Boyce. Link to it: Elementary Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems , 8th Edition, with ODE Architect CD
Do not blame the book. .......2007-02-06
Do not listen to the bad reviews. This is an excellent text for engineer types. People forget their calc 2 and they blame the book and/or the instructor. You will need int. by parts and partial fractions right of the bat.
I covered about 8 sections of DE's in my calc book during calc 2&3. Most students in the US cover some DE's during calc. The material in the first 2 chapters should be review for most of you. I never got stuck when learning the material, very smooth and intuitive explanations. The only time I needed extra help was during section 5.5 eigenvalues, completely different that presented in a linear algebra class, and during Bessel functions.
The electric circuit problems were great. Zill should add some finance problems, as their are none in the book. Also, this book has great drawings which you will appreciate during the multi-tank mixture problems. As a comparison the Ross DE book has great explanations and prose but no picture for the complicated mixture problems.
This class was not as tough as I thought it would be, the second half of calc3 was tougher. Zill DE 8th edition has all you will need to enjoy this fun and interesting course.
Zill's book is just as good as any other. If you want old school math major explanations, no modern pictures, check out Shepley L. Ross.
Do not blame others for your own shortcomings.
ZERO stars.......2007-02-01
Let me start out by saying I was really looking foward to this class... As a math major, I understand the significance of diffeq. I enjoy math, so this isn't a "I hate math rant." But now, I just can't wait for the quarter to end so I can throw this piece of crap in the trash... I'm not re-selling it because I was taught it is not nice to rip people off. Something the publisher and the author obviously have no problem doing to students. Our teacher recommended the book by Boyce/DiPrima, but I guess the school folded under the pressure and glitter the publisher no doubt used to get the sale.
The "book" starts out "the now classic 7th edition..." Yeah, right. Go ahead and pat yourself on the back, Denny ole boy. Any florid reviews of this "book" HAVE to have come from the publisher, as no student in his/her right mind would buy this "book" unless they HAD TO. First, the explanation of the subject is the WORST I have ever seen (and I HAVE seen others, just a little too late); I would advise not wasting your money on this "book" at all. Just get the Schaum's outline and whatever the library has on the subject and copy your homework problems from someone who made the mistake of buying this "book," or check out the reserve copy in your library. You won't miss anything, trust me.
Another review here said the explanation of Fourier transforms was explained as "like differentiation but different." Check. In fact, most all of the explanations are like that. The first chapter also requires that you be able to compose diffeqs, which is ridiculous since this is supposed to be a "first course." It would still suck if it said "refresher course!" I am lucky to have a good teacher, but even so, I am still stuck trying to slog through this horrible "book" once I get home. I spent more time trying to find a decent explanation just to do the homework, which is consequently, how I found out how bad this "book" is compared to others.
If you read this Dennis Zill, just please quit writing textbooks; you have done enough damage with this trash already.
Book Description
This text provides an introduction to the entire modeling process. Throughout the book, students practice key facets of modeling, including creative and empirical model construction, model analysis, and model research. The authors apply a proven six-step problem solving process to enhance a student's problem solving capabilities. Rather than simply emphasizing the calculation step, the authors first ensure that students learn how to identify problems, construct or select models, and figure out what data needs to be collected. By involving students in the mathematical process as early as possible, beginning with short projects, the book facilitates their progressive development and confidence in mathematics and modeling.
Customer Reviews:
If ur undecided about pure or applied math, thats the right book to know.........2006-01-16
Well, I was undecided about pure or applied mathematics.
I was more thinking of applied mathematics.
I took a course that uses this book.
Two weeks after the class began, I dropped the course, and I knew I am a pure mathematics guy!
(so the stars are for letting me know about what field I like, not the material presented in the book).
I am not saying anyone who starts reading this book is going to switch to pure mathematics.. it should not be the case, however, I think it has the essence of applied mathematics, so if u really like applied mathematics, ur going to very much appreciate this book.
The Text for Mathematical Models of Reality.......1998-04-07
From discrete to continuous modelling, with many proyects and examples, I like very spacially this book for the undergraduate level. The presentation is very clear, but rigurous, making experience the reader through the models. It focuses on the interpretation and ends with some tools for modelbuilding. For a start of mathematical model understanding of reality this book is specially good, clear and completely well written. Good job Mr. Giordano and Weir! See also: Mesterton-Gibbons:An aproach to Mathematical Modelling, Fowler: Mathematical Models in the Sciences, Beltrami: Mathematics for Dynamical Modeling, Morrison: The Art of Modeling Dynamical Systams and Giordano: Differential Equations a Modeling Aproach.
Book Description
This book is designed to introduce students to the basics of structural equation modeling through a conceptual, nonmathematical approach. The few mathematical formulas included are used in a conceptual or illustrative nature, rather than a computational one. The book features examples from LISREL and EQS. For that reason, the book can also be used as a beginning guide to learning how to set up input files to fit the most commonly used types of structural equation models with these programs. Intended as an introduction for graduate students or researchers in psychology, education, business, and other applied social and health sciences. The only prerequisite is a basic statistics course.
Customer Reviews:
A real "First Course".......2006-04-23
If you haven't been exposed to SEM , this book is right for you. Basic, straightforward, well planned and nonmathematical. However, this book cannot be the "only" book in your library if you are planning to go deep in SEM. This book is a good step for moving to intermediate or advanced levels.
The book is well desinged. It starts with fundamentals of SEM and EQS and LISREL programs. This book is NOT an EQS or LISREL reference, however, in each chapter, Raykov and Marcoulides cover an example showing the syntax and output of each program. The syntax and the output are deeply explained.
After introducing SEM and EQS and LISREL, the authors start to cover different approaches in SEM. Path analysis, Confirmatory Factor Analysis, Structural Regression Models and finally there is chapter about Latent Change Analysis.
In overall, the book is useful for only beginners as the authors' claim.

A great classic-- but will a 17-year-old enjoy it?.......2006-11-02
I am an SAT tutor and believe that this is one of the most valuable books of its type a student preparing for the test can read. Unfortunately, in my experience, students also find this one of the least enjoyable books. Why is it valuable?
There are 2 major areas that a student must master to improve scores on the SAT Critical Reading section: (1) Vocabulary. (2) Understanding of complex sentence structures. This book provides a student with both. (1) SAT words are bolded, their definitions conveniently located on the facing page. (2) Sentence structure is complex and the book is written in "older" English which is partly a result of the era it was written in. The college board knows this and even suggests that students read books written before 1900. The complex sentences and old language may be reasons students do not put The Scarlet Letter on their Top 10 Favorite Books List, but it does not take away from the book's value-- if you can get your child to read it.
