      5 out of 5 stars Well Written.......2007-03-14

This is a short but well written tool to use in writing cover letters. It doesn't cover much "theory", but rather an assortment of examples for different situations. It also has example letters for thing such as requesting career advice, reference letters, resignation, and networking. It sticks to the basics but has better writing and examples than most other books I've seen.

                Book Description

The proceedings discuss the nonequilibrium and nonlinear dynamics in nuclear and other finite systems. The problems discussed cover different levels of the structure of matter, such as quarks, hadrons and nuclei, and outline different issues in the physics of elementary matter: cold valleys and fusion of superheavy nuclei - hypernuclei - antinuclei - correlation in the vacuum. The aim of the discussions is to probe some fundamentals of modern physics, for example, the coexistence of macroscopic and microscopic effects in association with various phase transitions, and the mutual relation between classical and quantum effects related with macro-level and micro-level variables. It will also be an invaluable reference work for the dynamics of evolution of matter and dynamic relations between different levels of nature.

Every creature has body shape and uses mode of locomotion that is most economical for the way of life it has developed through natural selection in response to severe environmental conditions.--Akira Azuma

Through study of locomotion of living creatures, Akira Azuma has come to the conclusion that every creature is made and moves in a manner that is best suited to their environmental conditions. Thus, one purpose of this book is to shed light on the physical relationships among habitat, form, way of life, and mode of movement in living creatures.

The text also reviews results of theoretical and empirical research carried out by various scientists over the years.

Each of the two main parts of the book, Flying Dynamics and Swimming Dynamics, is written from the viewpoint of mechanics, specifically fluid dynamics, rather than from the viewpoint of physiology and ecology. Thus the chapters and sections are organized according to mechanical, not biological principles.

The book will be useful not only to engineers working and studying fluid and flight dynamics, but also for biologists using mechanical analyses to gain a better understanding of the behavior of animals and the mechanical functions of the body parts in relation to their forms and modes of locomotion.

5 out of 5 stars The mechanics of biological movement in air and water.......2006-06-06

There used to be a story that it was easy to prove that a Bumblebee couldn't fly, but that the Bumblebee couldn't read so he went ahead and flew anyway. It's clear that if a Bumblee could read, then this book would explain exactly how it is that it does fly.

Specifically this book is about the mechanical aspects of how living creatures move through the media of air and/or water. To an extent it talks about the environmental habitat and the ecology of the animal or plant, but it's primary concern is the mechanics of how it moves through the air or water. It includes everything from spores and polen that float through the air, to whales. It treats these biological 'machines' using many of the same terms that come from aeronautics: drag, lift, force, power, structure, airflow, Reynolds Number and so on. The theories that have been learned about aircraft are applied to what happens when a birds wing beats, or a fish's fin moves. The book is mathematically rigorous at a level through at least integral calculus.

This is the second edition of this book, revised and updated from the very difficult to find 1992 edition.

                    Book Description

This book provides a clear and concise summary of the fluid dynamics of the locomotion of living organisms. The biological phenomena described in detail range from the swimming of bacteria and fish to the flying of insects and birds. The breadth of treatment requires the study of two basic fluid-dynamical regimes. In the first case, that of small organisms, the viscosity of the fluid is paramount in deciding the most effective swimming strategy. However, for larger insects, birds, and most fish, the viscosity of the air or water may be treated as if it were zero, and resulting mechanisms of propulsion are very different. Both these types are studied, with emphasis on the unsteady character of natural movements. Written for the advanced student, this volume assumes familiarity with basic fluid mechanics, although some elementary topics are included. It will be readily accessible to students of applied mathematics and biologists who have engineering or physics backgrounds.

Far away on Wilde Island, Princess Rosalind is born with a dragon claw where her ring finger should be. To hide the secret, the Queen forces her to wear gloves at all times until a cure can be found, so Rosalind can fulfill the prophecy to restore the family to their rightful throne.
But Rosalind’s flaw cannot be separated from her fate. When she is carried off by the dragon, everything she thought she knew falls apart. The dragon sees beauty in her talon where her mother saw only shame, and Rosalind finally understands what her mother has truly denied her.

4 out of 5 stars Twist on dragon tale.......2007-10-17

Princess Rosalind has a secret. One that her mother has kept from their kingdom. Rosalind was born with a dragon claw.

No one, save her mother, knows about this secret. The queen has forced her to wear gloves at all times until a cure can be found. Rosalind must be perfect or else she can't fulfill Merlin's prophecy that will restore her banished royal family to its rightful throne.

But fate steps in and Rosalind comes to find out the truth behind the prophecy that has haunted her since birth.

I loved the twist of this tale. A perfect princess born with a hideous flaw. Something that shames her own mother, who has a secret of her own.

The first couple chapters hooked me. I wanted to know more about Rosalind and how she dealt with her problem. The middle of the book dragged a little but picked up with how the princess interacts with the dragons and finds out the truth behind her secret.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good fantasy. This one has bite!

4 out of 5 stars Well written Adventure story.......2007-08-26

A well written YA book. It was not dumbed down like some YA books are, the writing was smooth and kept the reader interested in the lead character.
The book tells a story of a princess, the 21st decendent of Queen Evaine, King Arthur's younger sister. The family was banished to the island when the Queen married a men that her father did not approve. The legend was that the 21st Queen will bring peace and honour back to the name of Pendragon.

Our heroine is the princess and only she and her mother know of her terrible secret. The poor girl has a Dragon's claw for her ring finger. Her mother keeps it hidden at all times under golden gloves, and goes to great lengths that the secret is never discovered. When the princess meets the female dragon, and later the dragon is killed, she is kidnapped by the dragon's mate to care for the pips (baby Dragons)
The dragon's see beauty where her mother only saw shame, and it is at the end of the story that the dragons give her the gift of Peace between Human and Dragon.
The adventures are exciting and the book should be recomended to any young Dragon Lover.

We gave this book to our 13 year old daughter for her birthday this year. Her words when I asked how it was were, "The most awesome book ever!" This is coming from an avid reader... she breezed through this 302 page book in just three days. Right now she is reading the Bartimaeus Trilogy, but says she would like to read more by this author in the near future.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic read for young adult.......2007-07-18

In this young adult fantasy, Rosalind's fate was written in the stars, read by Merlin, some 600 years before she was born. Rosalind's ancestor, Evaine, was the younger sister of King Arthur. Evaine married an outlaw, was banished to Wilde Island, and erased from family history.

Three things are said of the twenty-first queen of Wilde Island; "She shall redeem the name Pendragon. End war with the wave of her hand. And restore the glory of Wilde Island."

The way her mother sees it, with England in the midst of civil war Rosalind will marry Prince Henry, future king of England, thereby fulfilling all aspects of the prophecy. But what if Rosalind and Henry don't get along? Not that they've even heard from the Queen of England, though they assume she is aware of the prophecy. Then there's Rosalind's ring finger. It's a dragon's claw. So far she and her mother have hidden it behind golden gloves, but that won't work forever. They MUST find a cure soon--a cure that is hard to find when potential healers aren't told what the exact problem is.

When an envoy from England comes to Wilde Island, things start looking up a little, especially after they slay the dragon that has been harassing the Island forever. What should be one of the most triumphant moments in their history turns horrifying when the dragon's mate returns to punish the people, and takes a special interest in Rosalind. Before long, Rosalind's life will never be the same, and it doesn't look like the prophecy could ever be fulfilled.

There is so much more to this book! So many more levels and layers to the story! Rosalind may be a Princess with a dragon's claw in a faraway time and place, but her relationship with her mother is something you could see in anyone's life. Her desire to be normal and accepted are the same things every teenager experiences. So while the circumstances aren't something we experience everyday, the people in them, and their reactions to them, are completely realistic and relatable.

Armchair Interviews says: Part fairy tale, part mythology, part legend, all around fantastic!

"What a great story. The ending is unexpected." I am quoting the words of one of my 5th grade students. He requested this book as his prize for reading 200 books this year. He could not stop talking about the story. Based on his response I would recommend this book for young adults.

                      Book Description

The Tang Dynasty (618-907) was a golden age of poetry and short stories. In the brief span of two hundred and ninety years many outstanding poets and story writers appeared, including men like Li Po, Tu Fu, Pai Chu-yi, Li Kung-tso and Pai Hsing-chien, who have left works which will live forever. Over fifty thousand poems and over four hundred stories of the Tang Dynasty are extant today, reflecting glory on China's ancient civilization and making no mean contribution to world literature.

The ten stories in this collection can be divided into three main categories: stories of the supernatural, stories with a political theme or adventure stories, and love stories.

The Tang stories arose following the political, economic and cultural upsurge of the period. They continued the Six Dynasties tradition of supernatural tales and, influenced by contemporary art and minstrelsy and by the vernacular Buddhist literature, developed vigorously.

The stories in this collection are arranged in chronological order, together with a brief account of the author. These ten tales are a fair sample of the chief types of Tang stories, and from them we can glimpse something of China's rich and varied literary heritage.

                      Book Description

Denice Fawcett was born into a dysfunctional family. She, like her older sisters before her, was sexually molested by their domineering grandfather. Her father was a weakling and drunk; her brother was a druggie who committed suicide. Denice had her own troubles. She moved to Brooklyn to live with her sister, got involved with a fast crowd of musicians and addicts, became a heroin addict in the midst of various sexual liaisons. She was finally rescued from this tailspin by chanting Buddhism. Writing helped her find a new life. Clean and sober now, her story concludes with hope for a stable future.

Reading this book is truly like being inside the life and mind and heart of the author's experience, or even like being inside a movie. The language puts you right in the center of it--of being high, of being abused, of making love with the most incredible Latin drummer, of finally finding light at the end of the tunnel and then making an incredible life out of so much darkness. There is absolutely no judgment in any of the pages. The book really tells the truth about life and the human journey, with such delicious words, the most slamming poetry. It's as if the author's body was a musical instrument, vibrating to every stimulus, sometimes playing sweetly, sometines with such heart-wrenching disonance, but always making the highest kind of music. I've read it three times and each experience is richer. There's no hype, just pure telling it like it is.
