21 Practical and Proven Techniques You Can Use Immediately!
Book Description
The Canon is the clear and ordered Summa of all the medical knowlege of Ibn Sina's time, augmented from his own observations. Volume 1 (of 5 volumes) translated here was the best medical textbook available in Europe in its Latin translation for 700 years. With notes from St. Thomas Aquinas who said: Anything Avicenna says is true, it presents traditional medicine at its best and is far more accessible than the works of Hippocrates and Galen.
Customer Reviews:
To the idiot who thought Avicenna was black.......2007-02-01
Fact 1: Dr. Llaila Afrika is a black supremacist who thinks God and every significant historical figure is black; despite the fact that there weren't any black people even remotely close to Persia near Bukhara in 980 CE when Avicenna was born.
Fact 2: The Canon of Medicine was the standard medical text in European universities for seven centuries.
Fact 3: Rhazes was born almost a hundred years after Avicenna died. He translated Aristotle, a medical encyclopedia into Arabic. He also compiled works of Galen and incorporated portions of Avicenna's Canon of Medicine as supplemented by his own medical contributions.
Canon of Medicin.......2006-07-10
I am just more then happy for the book "Canon of Medicin". It is realy something I wanted to have, and finely I got it. Thanks being to Amazon which made it possible to have the item which was almost impossible for me to have. I am realu grateful. The book is actualy a gift for my husband, a gift from me, but respect Avicenna and his work, which is mostly interesting to read! Canon of Medicin is an respectable and readable book, not only for medical student/doctors, but also for other people!
Gruner's remarks worth the price of the book........2006-04-30
It is hard to believe that a book, so beautifully bound, is so poorly edited for numerous common typos.
That being said, the remarks of O. Cameron Gruner are wonderfully astute as to the history and meaning behind Avincenna's Canon. He compares traditional medicines with modern medicine and its lack of philosophy with a deftness only found in yoga sutras.
In addition, the Notes section of about 150 pages adds considerable understanding to the text of Avicenna. Notes helps the reader to experience the historical context of the Canon as well as its importance in modern medicine and philosophy.
I bought this book in order to understand alternative medicines regarding my own health and well being. I received that and much more.
Good History Lesson For Westerners.......2005-11-07
This book was written over 900 years ago by a muslim man. It was the first ever book on modern medicine. This book is the one that exposed modern medicine to the then backward western world and whole world. So popular that it was published 35 times and taught in Europe for 600 years. This book is a good ever lasting proof that east ( muslims ) started modern medicine. Muslim doctors were using Hollow needles to extract cataract when their western contemporaries didnt even knew it existed. Excellent work!
Who Avicenna really was?.......2005-02-01
I was reading another book written by Dr. Llaila Afrika in which he states that Avicenna was a Black Muslim and not Persian like one of the reviewers stated. [Avicenna] "and another Muslim Black named Rhazes influenced European medicine. In fact, Rhazes wrote about a hundred medical books which utilized natural foods, herbal remedies, and diets."
I would also like to know who it was that translated The Canon of Medicine? Europeans? Wouldn't that have been asking for potential biases?

New understanding of Islam influence.......2007-07-27
I read this book because even though a lay person, I have a great deal of interest in medicine and medical history as well as theology and philosophy, I'm working on learning and understanding more about Islam, and I am an old friend of one of the authors, Prof. Savage-Smith.
This book is fascinating in terms of the methodology used by the authors to learn about and come to conclusions about this history, including a tracing of roots, as well as the methods used in medieval times for medical practices. Lots of details and yet lots of main themes to give perspective. Even though very specialized, I think it is quite interesting.

Product Description
This book examines the knowledge and therapeutic use of opium and various species of poppy by physicians in ninth-century Baghdad (the leading medical centre then) as seen in key works by six outstanding physicians, with reference to others.
The study opens with a brief look at early Islamic knowledge of the Graeco-Roman use of opium, while examining in detail entries on opium and poppy in the Arabic version of Dioscoridess influential and fundamental Materia medica. The core of the study aims to establish to what extent and how opium and poppy are used in the selected books of the six physicians.
The comprehensive glossaries of Materia medica, Ailments and Conditions, and General Terms are particularly useful for the medical historian.

Book Description
This highly readable survey describes the development of Islamic medicine and its influence on Western medical thought. It explains the main features of Islamic medicine: its system of human physiology; its ideas about the nature of disease; its rules for diet and the use of drugs; and its relationship with astrology and the occult.
Customer Reviews:
A Basic Introduction.......2001-01-08
In this short book (only 114 pages of text, with a few illustrations) Manfred Ullmann, one of the world's leading experts on the scientific literature of the Arabic-speaking world in the medieval period, offers an introduction to Arabic-language writings about medicine. After a short discussion of pre-Islamic medical practices in the Arabian peninsula, Ullmann focuses on the impact of the translation of Greek medical writings into Arabic, sometimes directly from Greek, sometimes via Syriac or Persian intermediaries. He then proceeds to treat physiology, anatomy, pathology, transmission of diseases and the plague, dietetics and pharmacology, and the relation between medicine and magic in a few short chapters. His chief guide is *Al-Kitab al-Malaki* of Majusi, who died between 982 and 995.
It must have been a despairing task to write this book. The writings left behind by medieval Arab physicians form an enormous corpus, much of which has been printed in atrocious, unreliable editions, or remains only in manuscript. In choosing Majusi as his guide, Ullmann reduced the task to manageable proportions. But he thereby also sacrificed much. Majusi depended heavily on the works of Galen, and aimed to produce a comprehensive handbook; he thus represents the chief, purely "scientific" branch of Islamic medicine. Competing traditions receive short shrift, and there is virtually nothing about the actual practice of medicine (only a handful of cases histories -- the feature that makes the Hippokratic *Epidemics* still such compelling reading today -- appear in connection with treatment of the plague) or about medicine in its social and cultural context. These omissions result also in part from Ullmann's slightly old-fashioned approach, evident again in his comparisons of medieval medical knowledge with our own. Nor does Ullmann have much to say about the contribution of Persian, Egyptian, or Indian medical traditions and practices to Islamic medicine.
If these deficiencies are borne in mind, however, *Islamic Medicine* can still provide a solid, though somewhat out-of-date (the book was first published in 1978), introduction to the academic and scientific tradition in Islamic medical writing.
Customer Reviews:
A lot of RAMBLING....................2002-10-29
I read the first few pages and could not believe that I have been cheated by the title of the book, as well as the first reviewer. I actually read the first review again and then compared to that at the back of the book and my assumption is that the first reviewer (A reader) is somehow connected to the benefit from this book.
If you have read the book then you will understand my subsequent statement. After reading the book I feel exactly like a donkey carrying a load of speeches with no wise content. Too bad I have wasted my money. It is like listening to a hypomanic (mild) patient talking. I thought with more recent congress the author should get better but it is just the same. I lost my patience and threw the book on page 190.
Hopefully others will be careful before ordering this item.
the origin of harmonious health-one's own inner being.......1996-10-14
This is not a kind of mystical cookbook containing various recipes designed to provide a Sufic cure for earache, nosebleed or headache. "The Sufi Tradition contains techniques, energies, and applications of therapy, but the Tradition itself is not a therapy". We see in this book a kind of dialogue working itself out between a contemporary Sufi teacher and a number of therapists who are seeking to reinforce their fragile time-based scientific disciplines with a way of knowledge and wisdom that has existed in many differant guises from the dawn of man. Omar Ali-Shah's words here are practical, concrete, and also analogical; even repetitions in this book throw light on the way a preconceived attitude or conditionings can lead people into imbalance and illness. But the author puts it very clearly: illness is a distortion, not an inevitable state; every person secretes some form of self-improvement and the job of the therapist is to connect the patient's own energy to his science. The enemy can be overcome

Book Description
This book presents a critical analysis of the debate at the religious, legal and political level sparked off by the introduction of new biomedical technologies (cloning, genetics, organ transplants, IVF, etc.) in Muslim countries. It compares the positions of "classic" Muslim law and contemporary religious authorities; laws in Muslim countries; the attitudes and concrete behaviour of populations, families and individuals, as well as the regulations of medical associations, bioethics committees etc..
The result is a mosaic of positions which are often different (including from the point of view of ethics) but all in pursuit of legitimisation according to the Koran and the Shari’a.
The work has an interdisciplinary approach, drawing on law, sociology, anthropology, politics and the history of science. For this reason it will be of interest to scholars and operators in a wide variety of disciplines and fields.

Book Description
The proceedings of the international conference held in honor of Lodewijk Woltjer, focus on the physics, origin and space distribution of AGNs and quasars and their relationship to the environment, a very wide subject which has attracted much of Lodewijk Wolter's research interest. A number of lectures were also dedicated to reviewing the recent observational advances and those that may be attained by the introduction of new and powerful astronomical instrumentation both from the ground and from space, in recognition of the central role played by L. Woltjer in the promotion of the ESO VLT and of his involvement in shaping ESA's space programme Horizon 2000+.

Book Description
Pure and applied mathematicians, physicists, scientists, and engineers use matrices and operators and their eigenvalues in quantum mechanics, fluid mechanics, structural analysis, acoustics, ecology, numerical analysis, and many other areas. However, in some applications the usual analysis based on eigenvalues fails. For example, eigenvalues are often ineffective for analyzing dynamical systems such as fluid flow, Markov chains, ecological models, and matrix iterations. That's where this book comes in.
This is the authoritative work on nonnormal matrices and operators, written by the authorities who made them famous. Each of the sixty sections is written as a self-contained essay. Each document is a lavishly illustrated introductory survey of its topic, complete with beautiful numerical experiments and all the right references. The breadth of included topics and the numerous applications that provide links between fields will make this an essential reference in mathematics and related sciences.

This collection magnificently represents the great voices of this era. The volume includes the work of some forty-five Renaissance figures: short fiction and self-contained novel excerpts by Zora Neale Hurston, Nella Larsen, Wallace Thurman, and Jean Toomer; poems by Gwendolyn Bennett, Countee Cullen, Jessie Redmon Fauset, Langston Hughes, and Claude McKay; essays, manifestos, speeches, and nostalgic reminiscences by Romare Bearden, W. E. B. Dubois, Marcus Garvey, James Weldon Johnson, Alain Locke, and Richard Wright.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent source for the Harlem Renaissance writers.......2007-03-09
This is a fantastic source for essays by many of the Harlem Renaissance writers. Every convievable writer is highlighted in this book, from W.E.B. Dubois, to Alain Locke, to George S. Schuyler. Their most influential essays are presented in this book.
After some initial readings & browsing, it's the bomb.......2005-08-02
The poetry is really good, only I wish there were a little more. The prose writings have some really excellent sources. Good for an educational text for students covering the period.
Very well put together........2000-06-11
I give this book five stars because it has a wonderful cross-section of female and male Harlem Renaissance writers, and also because it includes fiction, prose (articles and essays), and poetry. This volume is nicely compiled, and it is a lovely companion to similar anthologies, such as "Trouble the Water," which is an anthology of black poetry from slavery through modern times. Also, because the Harlem Renaissance happened so long ago, The Portable Harlem Renaissance Reader includes works and excerpts from works that are seemingly out of print, such as a selection by Carter G. Woodson. This book has a lovely variety of practically every genre of literature, and is a must for any African-American studies scholar, though it is a capable volume for any student of literature, period. The only possible drawback of this book is that it contains a lot of excerpts. If you enjoy a certain excerpt (and it is almost guaranteed that you will), finding a copy of its parent body of work will become frustratingly high on your list of priorities. The Harlem Renaissance Reader is truly reccommended.
