      Book Description

"Like every other agency research director, I suffer from focus-group anxiety. Pumping M&M’s behind the one-way mirror, I’m monitoring the groups, the moderator and the client simultaneously. It’s tough enough to manage the client’s expectations and responses. Worrying about whether the moderator can effectively manage the content flow and the group dynamic makes the experience life threatening. Watching Tom moderate, I find myself constantly thinking, ’Wow, he’s smart. I wish I thought of that. He’s the best.’"

--George Scribner, Research Manager, Organic Inc.

"Dynamic, entertaining, and armed with information on new drugs and medical techniques that would challenge the knowledge of most physicians, Tom Greenbaum presides over an attentive yet relaxed group of medical specialists anxious to share their opinions and prejudices with this most charming of focus group moderators. Serving as a polished master of ceremonies, Mr. Greenbaum is able to work with the many individual styles of his physician panel and at the conclusion, leaves one with the sense of having participated in something important."

--Alan H. Richman, M.D., Chairman, Department of Radiology of Norwalk Hospital

"Tom Greenbaum is a highly effective moderator who has the special ability to quickly learn any subject matter and can conduct groups with expert knowledge. From the discussion guide to the final report, Tom works with speed and accuracy."

--Mark Alfonso, V. P. of Marketing, The Purdue Frederick Company

"Tom is one of the most competent and intuitive moderators I have ever worked with: not only does he have an impeccable understanding of the technical skills necessary for a successful moderator, he also has a unique and uncanny ability to foster and capitalize on the internal dynamics of any group."

--Joseph A. Ciaralli, The Prudential Insurance Company of America

"Thomas L. Greenbaum eats and breathes focus groups. If you want a definitive look at this research technique, you need to either live with the guru for a year or read his books."

--Dave Quincy, Clarion Marketing and Communications

The entire range of facilitation techniques is covered in this comprehensive handbook, from pre-session tips in participant recruitment to post-session reporting. Moderating Focus Groups covers all the fundamentals of successful group facilitation, and also includes a wealth of advanced techniques not found in other books on focus group research (on managing group dynamics, energizing a tired group, and digging deeper into the minds of participants.) Greenbaum also goes beyond the basics with chapters on how to build a business moderating focus groups, and how to price moderating services. While this book is particularly aimed at the needs of focus group practitioners, there is plenty of advice that will benefit anyone who conducts in-depth interviews or group facilitation. Additionally, the many people who hire moderators to facilitate their sessions will benefit from reading this book because it will provide them with valuable insights on how to evaluate their moderators’ work.

Harrison's is the most complete book of clinical medicine in one nice package. Well worth the investment!

5 out of 5 stars If your a Third year Medical student this book is a must........2006-09-12

I just finished my third year of medical school, and I found this book to be a must own. the topics quite interesting and comprehensible, and will help with most areas you need to reference.

5 out of 5 stars the best there is.......2005-12-31

I can scarcely believe that people dare to criticize this tome. I don't actually have Harrison--I have Tinsley & Harrison, as it was called in decades past. (People do grow old and die.) The notion that a layperson "can understand Hippocrates' Aphorisms in the original Greek" better is nonsense: frankly, it depends upon the lay reader's familiarity with terminology, yea, his or her command of Greek and Latin roots. That's what dictionaries are for, and that's also presumably what your English classes (remember them?) instilled in you--at least partially--at least hopefully. By way of superfluous comparisons to other opera campi, Merck just doesn't provide the depth of coverage: I regard it as a glorified Taber's.

5 out of 5 stars For the lay person---NOT!!!.......2004-04-18

There is a reason why med students learn anatomy, histology, embryology, physiology, and biochemistry before picking up Harrison's, so I snicker when non-MD's think they can read and understand ( with the help of Taber's medical dictionary, which by the way is used by nurses, physicians in training use Dorland's) a medical textbook, especially one like Harrison's.( What is especially humorous is that one reviewer recalled that the textbook was titled "Tinsley & Harrison "(sic).... funny because Harrison's first name was Tinsley, as in Tinsley Harrison, MD).This is like a layperson reading a computer manual then taking apart his PC and trying to put it back together. To reiterate a layperson has a better chance of understanding Hippocrates' aphorisms in the original Greek than Harrison's. Remember a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. To the reviewer that has Tinsley Harrison's earlier edition textbook, the medical information there is as useful as a screen door in a submarine. If it's writing style, literature and actual history of medicine that you are after, may I suggest "The Practice and Principles of Medicine" by Sir William Osler.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful home reference!.......2004-02-09

Great reference, even for non-MD's. The book's chapters are a great read for anyone interested in health matters, and also for those who desire a really comprehensive medical tome.

The thing is pricey, but well-worth the cost.

                    Book Description

What are your chances of dying on your next flight, being called for jury duty, or winning the lottery? We all encounter probability problems in our everyday lives. In this collection of twenty-one puzzles, Paul Nahin challenges us to think creatively about the laws of probability as they apply in playful, sometimes deceptive, ways to a fascinating array of speculative situations. Games of Russian roulette, problems involving the accumulation of insects on flypaper, and strategies for determining the odds of the underdog winning the World Series all reveal intriguing dimensions to the workings of probability. Over the years, Nahin, a veteran writer and teacher of the subject, has collected these and other favorite puzzles designed to instruct and entertain math enthusiasts of all backgrounds.

If idiots A and B alternately take aim at each other with a six-shot revolver containing one bullet, what is the probability idiot A will win? What are the chances it will snow on your birthday in any given year? How can researchers use coin flipping and the laws of probability to obtain honest answers to embarrassing survey questions? The solutions are presented here in detail, and many contain a profound element of surprise. And some puzzles are beautiful illustrations of basic mathematical concepts: "The Blind Spider and the Fly," for example, is a clever variation of a "random walk" problem, and "Duelling Idiots" and "The Underdog and the World Series" are straightforward introductions to binomial distributions.

Written in an informal way and containing a plethora of interesting historical material, Duelling Idiots is ideal for those who are fascinated by mathematics and the role it plays in everyday life and in our imaginations.

2 out of 5 stars Exactly who did the author have in mind?.......2003-02-27

The best puzzle books start with problems that are interesting and non trivial, and offer unexpected solutions. They appeal to a crowd with different levels of education and offer a new idea or two to all. They will lead an unsuspecting layman to a new beautiful mathematical subject, and treat a pro with a lighthearted yet technically sound look at the concepts he is already familiar with.

"Dueling idiots" is none of that. To read it you must be more than familiar with probability theory, and at ease with going through rather tedious calculations and using mathlab. Yet all a sophisticated reader finds here is absence of fresh ideas and technical sloppiness.

I am giving it two stars rather than one because it could provide some probability theory buff with a nice set of "real life" applications -- good as an auxiliary text book for an undergraduate probability class e.g. Apart from that, you will find a better puzzle book almost anywhere you look.

2 out of 5 stars This Attempt Falls Short.......2001-10-29

There is surely a need for a book like this but sadly this one doesn't do the
job. The author clearly has no idea what's really required. On p 20 he has
the results of five runs of 10,000 simulations to estimate the probability
P(A) of an event A. Now P(A) is known here, so these simulations are just an
ATTEMPT to verify that the program is working correctly. The author merely
notes that "the estimates for P(A) are a bit on the high side." No kidding!
All five runs produced consistently high estimates, and combining the runs
there's only one chance in 87 that the overall estimate would be so high
(ASSUMING the program were working properly). Of course, it's POSSIBLE that
the procedure is correct, that such high estimates just happened by a long
shot, but my email suggesting that the simulations be rerun drew no reponse.
Given this failure to demonstrate that a KNOWN probability can be estimated
properly, goodness only knows how good/bad UNknown probability estimates are.
Little wonder so many bombs are missing their targets in Afghanistan.

Turning to how the random numbers were generated I promptly noticed the table
of autocorrelations on p 184. These are not only bad, the zero-lag
correlation (a variable with itself) is 1.023!!! Given that it should be
nothing but EXACTLY 1 I initially thought this was a social comment on the
age of the generator, but machines were NEVER THAT bad. Rather, you'll find
the reason in the mishmash just above the table.

Indeed, in what little I read, statistical concepts are massacred. Further,
on p 27 there's an expression for pi which is actually mathematical nonsense
(ie, it is incorrect). At that stage I quit reading, it's so painful.

Nonetheless, I'll give the author two stars for TRYING to fill a void. He
just needs someone to correct everything, which is obviously no small task.

Books on probability are often boring. (Remember all those tedious problems involving people obsessed with drawing balls from urns?). In "Duelling Idiots", Nahin actually makes the subject fun by describing offbeat problems with unexpected solutions. If you like solving math puzzles, then this is a great book to look at. If you're teaching a course and want to assign a book that students might actually read, then look no further.

4 out of 5 stars Real world problems masked by somewhat frivolous statements.......2000-10-14

Two areas where the results are often counter intuitive are quantum mechanics and probability. Even experienced mathematicians are often confused by results such as the birthday and Monty Hall problems. After years of expert analysis and commentary, the results are still disputed and disbelieved by many. While these problems are not covered in any detail here, others with sometimes unexpected results are extensively examined.
The title problem is a simple one where two individuals take turns spinning the chamber of a gun, pointing it at the other and pulling the trigger. While it is obvious that the first to go has the advantage it is surprising that the advantage is not greater than it is. Another problem of special interest during playoff season concerns the probability that the best team actually wins a seven game first with four wins series. It is a well-worn cliché that, "In a short series, anything can happen!" However, the mathematical analysis clearly supports this saying. The graph of the possible results shows that even if the probability of the stronger team winning any individual game 0.65, the weaker team still has a 20% chance of winning the series.
Monte Carlo or statistical simulation methods are used to test and verify many of the results. The software package used to perform the tests is MATLAB and 63 pages of code listings is included at the end of the book. Solutions to all problems are included and many of them require a year or more of college calculus in order to understand the solution.
Although many of the problems covered in this book have somewhat frivolous statements, they also are illustrative of situations encountered in the real world. Some in fact originated there and the statements were altered to make them more interesting to a general audience. This is a good book to use as a supplement in a course in applied probability theory.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent probability teasers and solutions!.......2000-10-11

This is yet another excellent contribution by professor Paul Nahin. The format of this book is different from his previous texts, but the high quality content is still there.

The book is divided into three main parts. In the first part he presents the problems and elaborates on their history, if any, and provides hints or solves a related problem. In the second part, he provides complete solutions to the problems, both analytical and through computer simulation in most cases. Finally, in the third part, he includes all the programs (MATLAB version) used to obtain the solution to the puzzlers.

The book also includes a chapter on random number generation, a key element of Montecarlo simulation.

Some knowledge of basic probability and random variables is required to fully understand the problems and solutions. Also, knowledge of calculus is needed (particularly integral calculus). To understand the computer solutions the reader must know MATLAB. The computer simulations, however, can be rewritten using any languange. Personally, I prefer Perl and that is what I used to run some of the simulations.

I believe that the computer programs could have been included in a CD or diskette, or a download site could have been used. Then, the 67 or so pages dedicated to these programs, could have been used to provide 5-10 additional problems!

When the corpses of three police officers are discovered entombed in snowmen, Grace MacBride and her team of crime-busting computer jocks at the Monkeewrench firm are called in to assist. What they discover is a terrifying link among the victims that reaches beyond the badge and crosses the line between hard justice and stone cold vengeance.

4 out of 5 stars Brave and radical crime novel.......2007-08-29

I have used the words "brave and radical"in my title for this review and there is a reason for this. Most crime novels provide their readers with a sense of closure by setting up a situation in which a crime is perpetrated ,investigated and solved .The culprits are identified and brough to justive and order is restored to the moral universe of the book .Crime novels are thus deeply Conservative ,at least for the most part.
Here there is no such sense of closure or the restoration of order. We are never wholly sure who the killers are -we are left to make our own minds up -and justice is not meted out to the potential perpetrators. This is a book of moral ambiguity and even handedness

It seens the return of the Minneapolis cops familiar to readers of earlier P J Tracy books ,Rizzoli and Rolseth .The crew of the computer company Monkeewrench ,while present as before, take a back seat this time out and the result is a book more like a police proceduraal than are earlier works .Events are set in motion with the discovery ,in a frozen Minneaplois park of two bodies ,hidden in snowmen .They are the remains of two local cops ,Tommy Deaton and Toby Myerson
Soon thereafter another body hidden inside a snowman turns up ,this time in upstate Minnesota .There is no mystery here about the killer ,the body being that of a parole officer ,and he has ben killed by a parolee ,a vicious killer named Weinbeck who is seeking the whereabouts of his wife ,who he abused repeatedly when free .
This case is dumped in the lap of a newly elected female sheriiff of the county ,Rikker ,a woman who feels out of her depth -mainly becuase she is .
Events turn on Bitterroot , a community of women ,in the wilds of the state ,that was established a haven for abused women ,a community whose founders ,we learn ,had killed in the past .It turns out that one of the murdered cops was also a spousal abuser and his ex-cop father in law is a suspect in the case .
The crimes may be the work of the father in law;they may have been carried out by women from Bitterrrot ,some of whom beleieve the world should be ourged of abusers by any means possible
The lack of clear resolution will frustrate and annoy many readers but for me it adds to the appeal of a well written and even handed book that raises real issues in an adult ,responsible and mature way .It may lavk the sheer tension of earlier wirks by this writing team but it is a more mature and ambiguous work ,with a very good line in desriptive writing of climate and terrain

3 out of 5 stars Three and a half stars because..........2007-07-16

...it kept me interested and was an entertaining read but there were just too many coincidences in it to be realistic. The idea, of bodies in snowmen set up a creepy visual but I'm just not convinced the killer/s would have gone to so much trouble.

Grace and the gang hardly featured at all but I didn't feel the story was any the less for that. Instead, I enjoyed the interactions between detectives Gino and Magozzi and the rookie sheriff Iris Rikker with Lieutenant Sampson.

The story line featuring Steve Doyle (the parole officer) or more to the point how he was found, was again unlikely, It was too obvious that it had only been put in to link the story lines geographically.

There were certainly some good and believable plot lines along the way but I think the characters in this series of books are so widespread, that although the authors try and involve them all each time, even to a small extent, it's just not feasible without making some of the story lines seem far-fetched.

                      P. J. Tracy, Snow Blind (Putnam, 2006)

Tracy's fourth Monkeewrench novel once again centers on Magozzi and Rolseth, with the actual Monkeewrench gang (yes, I know, it's an awful pun, but I can't stop myself from using it) taking a back seat. We start off with two bodies discovered in snowmen at the Minneapolis Police Department's snowman-building contest. That's bad enough, but when Magozzi and Rolseth find out their two victims are cops, everything goes haywire. Meanwhile, a just-released felon disappears from a meeting with his parole officer, and the parole officer disappears with him. Are the two cases connected, and if so, how? Just to make things interesting, a third snowman turns up in a county sixty miles north of Minneapolis, in a county whose Sheriff is on her first day on the job, and has no police experience except dispatch. What could possibly go more wrong? Everything, as it turns out, and that's part of what makes the Monkeewrench books so appealing.

As with the first three books in the series, this is a very quick and engaging read, fast enough paced to keep you turning the pages, but still striaghtforward. It's not quite right to call this a mystery, but it doesn't quite fall under the police-procedural heading, either. Whatever it is, it's a lot of fun. If you haven't yet discovered Monkeewrench, you should. ****

Since Monkeewrench is one of my all-time favorite books, my standards are high. Snow Blind just didn't compare. My husband and I have read all of P.J. Tracy's books and eagerly await each new work; but, if they'd write a book equally as good as their Monkeewrench and Dead Run, we'd wait longer for each new book!

4 out of 5 stars Monkeerench Team Play Very Minor Role as Their Support Cast From Former Novels Take the Limelight!.......2006-11-04

Snow Blind revolves around Minnesotan detectives Rolseth and Magozzi who have been the support cast to the computer geniuses who make up the Monkeewrench team in the three former novels of this great series. The Monkeewrench team are still in this one, just on very few pages. Obviously after an extremely high quality and popular series so far, the ultimate test for this mother and daughter team is to write a novel with completely separate characters. Snow Blind is obviously them trying their hand to see if they can one day produce that independent novel, while still at the moment keeping the attachment to the popular characters of this great series. Good on them for them that, many authors are too scared of the backlash from their fans to take this step. Hopefully the success of this book will encourage them to take the next step and go all the way (while of course still continuing to write more in the great Monkeerench series as well).

In Snow Blind Minneapolis homicide detectives are disgusted to find inside the thawing snow men at a charity event the corpses of two of their own. As they pursue the case more corpse filled snow men appear outside of Minneapolis. Their pursuit takes them to rural Dundas County where small town politics still runs the police. They will have to deal with a police force that resents its newly elected female sheriff, Iris Rikker whose first day on the job was the discovery of a corpse snowman. Throw in a mysterious community called Bitterroot that has no male residents and Detective Magozzi and Rolseth and the other officers will have their most interesting and confusing case ever.

To be honest Snow Blind isn't the high quality masterpiece that the initial Monkeerench (also published as Want to Play? in some markets) and next in the series Live Bait were. I did like the fact that it was more plausible and relied less on coincidence to pull of the story line than third in the series Hit and Run did and is back to a traditional police homicide thriller rather than American terrorists as was the case with that novel. Although not as good as the predecessors and certainly more predictable than the other novels it is still a great read for anyone and not just fans of P.J. Tracy. It also does not give away the plots of former novels if this is your initial entry into their work.

You will not have any trouble reading this book.It is one of the few books I have read where someone snorting his brains out on coke tries to explain, almost romantically, how he got started in dealing (the head of U.S Customs personally asked him to do it!!) and why Coke has a bad rap (after all, it WAS in Coca-Cola). He describes some great concealment methods that would still work as well today as it did in 1972, and it almost seems like he was the underdog fighting against the system. Almost. In reality he just dealt in misery and slowly became more misarable himself. Good book for anyone in law enforcement to read.

I first met Douglas Kalajian after toasting the New Journalism with the fabled editor Eddie Sears during a wine-fueled chit-chat in the executive floors of The Palm Beach Post. The year was 1994 or 1995. I forget, mainly because I left all my brains to the wrinkled mavens who entertained me nightly at the many ornate bars I frequented in Palm Beach. What Sears said about Kalajian pretty much cements my belief that Douglas, more than any other writer in star-crossed Southern Florida, has a full grasp of the many flawed characters that walk that wild geography. "Kalajian will shock the Hell out of a witch," Sears said. This book is about one such wicked dude. You can visit Florida for a week and it isn't long before you get the distinct feeling that Florida is no Midwest Wimp like Oklahomo or Kancer or Rita Nebraska...No, sir. Here, in his book, Douglas Kalajian is both Dali and Diego Rivera. He has painted a factual mural so alarming and bright that to read it is to see what's on the other side of the Sun. I read it while fishing in The Gulf of Mexico and damned if every damned fish I caught didn't look ugly as all Hell. Truth is scary and Douglas Kalajian has thrown truth at us...

Snow Blind is a true story that moves at the pace of an action adventure. The action happens in the courtroom, as a youg public defender with a gift for showmanship rights wrongs, rescues the innocent and puts the high-and-mighty in their place. And then something goes wrong, big time. If you live in South Florida you WILL recognize the protagonist and the bigwigs he must duel. You'll be surprised, because not many people know the details. Even if you live elsewhere and don't know the names, you'll be swept along by this amazing story.

Hugh took his reward, none the less sweet to his strange nature, in that it was only potentially earned. And joy, like a warm flood, crept up again to his heart. He sat on the hillside and held his small love close. One of his arms moved stiffly, and he groaned a little. She rubbed it for him.

To the north a single blunt, low mountain-head broke the evenness of the horizon line. "
