The theoretical aspects of crystal packing, the study of the nature and magnitude of the forces that hold molecules together in organic crystals, and of the most favourable arrangements of molecules in crystals are dealt with in this book. After an introductory chapter on the definition and relevance of symmetry in crystal packing, a chapter deals with the physical foundations of weak intermolecular forces and with their simulation by quantum chemical methods. Subsequently, the relationships between crystal structure and crystal thermodynamics are described using empirical intermolecular potentials to bridge the gap by computer modelling.

If you need a reference for various numerical methods then this book may be of use to you, but do not expect to learn anything from it. You will not be taught 'why' these methods work, or 'how' they came about--it simply lists a bunch of formulas with a few meager attempts at derivations here and there. If you want to actually understand this stuff you'll have to go elsewhere. If you just want a reference...I would still go elsewhere.

I used this book in a college level course, and let me tell you it is close to worthless. I gave it two stars because someone might be able to use this for some kind of whimpy reference book. Don't buy this expecting to learn much from it though. The first few chapters are ok, but later on it just glosses over many things you need in order to understand stuff.

Good Reference Book.......2000-01-06

This book is exactly as the title says. There are a lot of great sources on applied mathematics and it covers a lot of good material ranging from iterative methods to PDE's. Matlab is the software of choice and the book does a good job of making use of Matlab. The detraction to this book is the lack of rigor. The book operates under the misconceptiong that applied math doesn't have to be very analytical. As a reference book it is good resource, but as a textbook a little bit more analysis needs to be put in. This is a nice fresh idea for what Numerical Analysis should be, but could use a bit more beefing up in the analysis side. Hopefully this will come with later editions.

Whether you use Matlab or not, if you need information about numerical methods, this is the book for you. It makes the standard, Press, et al, "Numerical Methods In.." look like a first-grade primer by comparison.

I'm writing my own book on numerical algorithms for embedded systems, so I know whereof I speak. _GOOD_ books that are both readable by ordinary mortals, and usable for serious computing, can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Most are either too pedantic and obtuse, or too simple and shallow, or directed at a small subtopic of the larger area of numerical methods. Somehow, through a combination of simple, no-snow examples, lots of exercises, and Matlab programs, author Faucett manages to include virtually every aspect of numerical methods. Not only that, but she includes them in depth, in a way that's easy to follow and exercises that drive every point home. In my travels, I've seen a lot of references to such things as Runge-Kutta and Adams-Moulton methods, solving stiff ODE's, solving for eigenvalues and eigenvectors, and Householder and QR transformations, to name a few. It's rare to find easily intelligible explanations, with derivations, for any _ONE_ of them. To find them all in one book is astonishing.

The authors demonstrate how Matlab can be used for advanced numerical calculations. Many Matlab books just use numerical examples that are really elementary, from a scientific or engineering viewpoint. Those texts are more about teaching Matlab. Hence they choose simple examples, to reach a broad audience. Whereas the audience for this book is rather select. Probably tending towards professionals in the physical sciences or engineering. Or possibly grad students in these fields.

The text starts with matrix [linear] algebra. Explaining how to invert a linear system of equations. Then the book goes onto finding roots of non-linear equations, using Newton-Raphson iteration. And the always useful methods of numerical differentiation and integration. Plus other topics. Each chapter has an extensive problem set.

A central theme is that you don't need much previous knowledge of Matlab. The book guides you into its abilities to help your research.

Very Boring.......2004-04-12

This book is very boring. This book neither works as a biography nor as legal journalism.

Raggio's life story is boring. Louise Raggio had a unremarkable and typical early 20th century life. The only exciting fact is that Grier Raggio her husband was accused of "unamerican activities" and was Lee Harvey Oswald's appointed attorney for several hours. Otherwise the stories of Louise Raggio growing up on a farm, going to college, getting her first job are tedious and without literary merit.

As legal journalism, it is way too high level. There are no specific legislative stories, no landmark legal battles, no interesting legal cases. If Raggio revolutionized Texas family law it is not documented in this book.

I would not recommend this book.

The book is not only a rich history of the fight for women's rights in Texas and the US but a wonderful look into the life of an incredible woman. The story is told with such warmth that you end up loving this tough, spunky, little woman. The book is a must read for every lawyer in the state of Texas while also a wonderful example of a dedicated wife (under often horrid circumstances) and a devoted mother.
Louise Raggio is definitely a Texas Tornado.
