I have used Harrisons since the eighties. I am a Clinical Psychologist dealing with patients who often have multiple medical problems. Harrison's is a complete solution to getting up to the date medical information, not only the book and CD but also the Website. It is expensive, but if you only ever buy one medical text, this has to be the one.

In spite of the energy crises and the recession, there has been a global, explosive growth in the amount of motor vehicles. In the past 50 years, the amount has increased from 50 to 700 million vehicles. For economical reasons they will probably continue to be used for a considerable number of years, despite the poor yield of internal combustion engines resulting in the inevitable production of some gaseous pollutants. The subsequent increase of gaseous pollutants in our atmosphere caused by exhaust gas from automobiles has enhanced the problem of the elimination of these pollutants produced by internal combustion engines. Catalysis has proven to be the best solution to lower the content of exhaust gas in pollutants.

As its predecessors, CAPoC4 proved to be a suitable platform for discussing technological improvements and developments along with future perspectives and challenges. In the light of new results and further legislative regulations, the following topics were intensely discussed:
• low light-off behaviour based on improved catalysts and substrate formulations
• efficient adsorber systems for storage of hydrocarbon emissions
• electrically heated catalyst systems ahead the main catalyst or, alternatively, close coupled catalysts (at the manifold of the engine)
• lean DeNO x catalysts allowing for decomposition of NO x in the oxygen-rich exhaust of direct injection gasoline engines and high speed injection diesel engines or, alternatively, NO x trapping/reduction in a hybrid approach
• collection and destruction of dry particulates or soot.

There is no doubt that clean vehicle technology is a vital part of improving air quality. Challenges remain and call for technological answers. Catalytic air pollution control is still an area providing a considerable incentive for innovative work.

Overpriced for the information.......2007-07-01

This book is not significantly different over previous editions yet costs just as much. It tends to be a plug for Pharsight products -- of which Dan Weiner is one of the highest ranking executives (conflict of interest? You be the judge). While the information presented is comprehensive and relatively readable, it does not give you enough practice application -- assuming that you will use Pharsight modeling tools to do the work. It is sort of like having a 1000-page book on statistics that doesn't actually show you how to use statistics -- just tells you to go use SAS.

OK.......2006-05-20

As someone new to the field, I found this book hard to digest in terms of modeling. I'm trained as a modeler, so I'm hoping to pick up what has been done in the area. However, I found the modeling parts of the books rather slopping. Equations given not telling how they've been derived, worst, approximations are used all the times. You could sometimes guess how the formulae are derived but not the approximations used. After going thru several sections in Chapter 3, I'm skipping the formula ... The mathematics are easy but they are written in such a way that's hard to follow.

Gabrielsson's & Weiner's Pharmacokinetics & Pharmacodynamics.......2001-07-29

This excellent review of PK and PD analysis might be envisioned as a merging of Rowland and Tozer's (clinical) and Gibaldi's resepective textbooks of pharmacokinetics. Although clearly written in support of the WinNonlin (Pharsight) analysis software (the second half of the book includes example models), the text is sufficient as a stand-alone by providing up to date, yet easily understandable and well illustrated discussion of pharmacokinetics. Both modeling and noncompartmental analysis are discussed, as is application of pharmacodynamic analysis. Clinical applicability is included. The book is useful for beginners as well as individuals who have been in the PK/PD business for a while. For myself and my graduate students, the book was particularly helpful in explaining the basis for "policies" followed by many published pharmacokinetic papers.

I would recommend this book to anyone of any age (who can read, of course). I have always loved westerns. It doesn't matter if it is in the form of a book or a movie or a TV series, I'm nuts about westerns and Open Range, the book and the movie did not disappoint!!!!!!!!

Not as Compelling as the Movie.......2005-01-24

Perhaps this book started out with a disadvantage for me in that I came to it because I saw and enjoyed the movie first. The book is much more mundane and lacks the mythic resonance achieved by the Kevin Costner directed film. As others here have noted, the screenplay dramatically departs from the characterization of the Charlie Waite character as found in the book while the book's denouement lacks the massive, bloody and life-changing gun battle which gives the film its sense of power and gravitas. On balance, I found the book okay but not particularly compelling or memorable. Of course I have a few bones to pick with the film's screenplay as well, which went on much too long, drawing out the dramatic ending until one barely cared anymore. Costner would have been better off ending strongly, right after the showdown and the destruction it unleashed. Lauran Paine, author of this novel, would have been better off if he could have achieved the sense of mythic resonance the film somehow managed to tease out of this somewhat ordinary tale of conflict between a rich and ruthless cattleman and a couple of unaffiliated cowboys just passing through. -- SWM

THE SCREENPLAY IS BETTER.......2004-10-17

I watched the movie before reading the book and was surprised that the movie storyline is much better than the novel. Actually, the book and movie part company when Wait and Spearman return to town to avenge the death of Mose. From that point, the book takes a completely different turn while also enforcing the huge difference in the Wait character in the movie.

The book is okay but it drags from beginning to end. It does not compane with the classic western novels and I imagine anyone reading it because of their interest in the movie will be disappointed.

A gripping tale of human greed and the fight for survival.......2004-01-14

Very highly recommended for both personal and community library audiobook collections, Open Range by Lauran Paine is the western novel upon which the motion picture starring Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner was based. Open Range tells of conflict between open range men - free grazing cattle owners who have no land yet drive their cattle through the country. Yet ranchers are buying up the land, and one of them is so ruthless as to do murder upon the competing open range men - a crime that cannot go unanswered. A gripping tale of human greed and the fight for survival, Open Range is complete, unabridged, and superbly narrated by Barrett Whitener.

Good, but predictable.......2003-08-30

Open Range is a great change of pace Western that makes for an easy and entertaining read. It's short, fun, and absolutely nothing that taxes one's brain. Open Range chronicles the adversity experienced by two independent, yet amiable freegrazers in the twilight of the old American West. The veteran cowhand Boss Spearman and his protege Charley Waite make their way in the open West while herding and raising cattle in the open land - much to the displeasure of the local reprobate cowhand magnate and his puppet marshal.

Easy-to-read biography tells story, teaches history.......2001-03-23

As a teacher and the mother of four, I recommend this book to anyone who wants an enjoyable lesson on women's rights and the history of the mid-to-late 1800s. Set in towns throughout Wisconsin, this biography provides factual information about Goodell, her struggle to become a lawyer and the obstacles she faced as a women trying to do a "man's job." The book also does a great job of explaining the history of the time (slavery, abolition, temperance) in an easy-to-read fiction format. Because the book covers many issues, the author has included information about subjects the readers may not understand, like temperance and slavery. A glossary explains terms that may be new to them (abolitionists, suffrage, etc.).

Older elementary and middle school students will be able to read and understand this well-told story. I believe that this book would be a great addition to history curriculum. Also, because it accurately depicts the problems a women in the 1800s had when trying to enter a "man's profession," I think it highlights the importance of following your dreams, regardless of what gets in your way. For boys and girls alike, it provides a great lesson in the benefits of perseverance.
