Useful for both nonprofit and for-profit organizations.......2001-10-13

As an organization and leadership development consultant, I was interested in learning different methods for increasing performance, especially at the leadership level, in the nonprofit organizations with which I work. This book provided more than I bargained for - and that was good.

The author carefully and comprehensively guides the reader through four levels of business, what he refers to as the Business Sphere; the business unit, the core process, the individual and the work group and analyzes each of these from the viewpoint of the inputs, conditions, process elements, consequences, outputs, and feedback (the "proforma") involved in conducting business' work. Performance alignment is explained as being the "interdependencies" of these four levels of business.

Just when I thought I had it, the last chapters of the book emphasized the importance of including (or "layering") work support, behavior, standards and human consonance into the mix. Any good performance consultant knows that attitudes, support systems, values and explicit standards are necessary for business success. But what the author does is provide a detailed account of how to measure and include these into your performance analysis of the Business Sphere and the six elements (inputs, consequences, processes, conditions, etc) of each component of that Sphere. Sound detailed and complex? It is.
However, the author is systematic in his discussion of the process of analyzing the deficiencies in any given organization and encourages consultants to be just as methodical in their approach. For instance, he supports his argument that the order of analysis is important and necessary with a poignant example. He mentions "A CEO decided to reorganize the work groups without first investigating whether there was any problem with the processes or the individuals who produced the primary [business] outputs. He assumed the problem [with his business outputs] was with the work groups (the organization structure)." Langdon argues that the CEO, and performance consultants, should first measure primary outputs, then processes and individuals, and, finally, the work groups. This order will allow the consultant to more accurately locate the root cause of an organization's challenges.

Mr. Langdon's book is academic and not for the faint of heart. However, he does an exceptional job of providing supportive tables and templates, for us visual learners, which brought to practical life the points he emphasizes. Additionally, his many business examples and continued referral to football, as a business example that everyone can understand, all allow the reader to see how to apply the principles Langdon just outlined.

The book, however, draws on his experiences in the environmental technology field and refers to nonprofit organizations only twice. So the reader must focus on what is transferable or achievable for working groups or organizations in that sector.

This book requires an attentive mind, a notepad and a pencil. Mine is littered with paper book-marks and pencil notes in the margins. After a rough start, I starting seeing how each component of the Business Sphere and the "proforma" could be useful in facilitating discussions with nonprofit organization's leaders, staff and volunteers on defining, measuring and improving their performance. Important to understand, too, is that the author is encouraging consultants to help the organizations with which they work to develop a "Language of Work" model; a language that is common to everyone in the business so that there remains little room for miscommunication, misunderstanding or other root causes of misalignment. His attempt to explain this Language model is the heart of this book.

Performance alignment (PA) assures that all the work in a business is in harmony so that the organization can achieve its mission. This book describes how PA can be achieved inside a business. It describes the role of the performance consultant as a facilitator to help employees at all levels achieve alignment. The focus of PA is on the internal operations of the business, and serves the alignment of the organization's strategy with its markets. The methodology offered in this book for achieving PA is conceptually comprehensive; it addresses three basic questions: Where is the performance that needs alignment located in the business? How can you describe the performance so that nothing is overlooked? How can we make the performance understandable and align all performance together so that each part supports the others? INVALUABLE RESOURCE FOR ANY TEACHER OF ASTRONOMY........1998-11-24

This book has been a lifesaver for me many times when I needed authoritative information in a hurry. If you are a teacher of astronomy--at any level from undergrad on up--you will never regret having this on your shelf! Many times, after searching in vain through half-a-dozen textbooks for some item of information, I have turned to Facts-on-File Astronomy and found the answer directly, without further ado. I believe this is a "must" for every serious teacher, student, or researcher in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

HORRIBLE BOOK!.......2007-06-27

I am currently taking pre-cac in summer school and I fear I will have to drop the class! This book is ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE in presenting concepts and helping to guide you through the process on figuring things out. There is no reason why I should read a book, be confused, read it again, be more confused, ask friends to read it and have them be confused. I don't know how educators get away with writting books of such low quality-- and I have even less of an idea how a school chooses to use such a book. Minimally, instructors should be looking here to see the absolutely horrible feedback on this book and CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TEXT! It seems the only reason why my summer school is using this book is due to the fact that it was written by some professors here. For such a prestigous university that surely strikes of a highly unintelligent decision.

I did appreciate the applications approach, but I felt like with almost every lesson that there were not nearly enough practice problems. A formula would be introduced with only two practice problems, only one of which is in the back of the book (of course). In my study groups, we would work those same two problems a few times and feel confident, then bomb the exam. If I remember correctly, I believe you can order an extra workbook in this series. I would recommend this text IN ADDITION to a workbook.

The biggest problem that I saw with my department adopting this textbook is that the instructors really do not teach the applications approach. I would go home to study and find that the text did not follow at all what we were covering in class. The innovative approach of the textbook was thereby lost as we flipped back and forth between the chapters trying to cobble together problems to match lectures.

I really have difficulties to understand some reviewers given one star for such a wonderfull book. If you read this book before Uni, you will have a stable ground for calculus.

All frequently used functions and their practical usage as modelling tools are lucidly explained. I finally know what hyperbolic functions are, I finally know how the path from given data to an appropriate model. I finally know how can I practically sketch seemingly complex but simple functions.

It's strength based on model oriented approach to functions. This has pratical value for all candidate engineers...

Without any doubt I'll give five stars to acknowledge the authors.

Incomplete, discouraging, Unhelpfull book that only hinders the learning process.......2006-04-27

This is probably the most incoplete, inarticulate book I've ever used so far in my 3 years in college. It fails to COMPLETELY explain ALL THE MANY concepts you will ,sort-of ummmm, need to pass the class,tests or even complete the problems within the book. Expect to buy at least one other pre-calc text to clearly explain EVERYTHING this book consistently DOESN'T. This book is not a student-friendly one, its more of an EXPERT MATHEMETICIAN-FRIENDLY text book, written for people who already have lots of experience with pre-calculous. First time precalculous students should not actually expect to learn from this book or be able to count on this book as a reliable source to turn to during homework assignments or study sessions... As this book consistently fails to articulate even the most simple of precalculous concepts. If you don't beleive mine along with most other negative ratings of this book, go ahead and compare this book to almost any other precalc text book for yourself. You'll quickly see that EVEN THOUGH YOU'VE PAID A GENEROUS AMOUNT OF MONEY FOR THIS BOOK TO TEACH YOU, this book FAILS TO PERFORM EVERY SINGLE STEP OF THE WAY, PARTICULARLY when you need it to CLEARLY EXPLAIN SOMETHING TO YOU most. REALLY THIS BOOK ONLY MAKES IT HARDER TO UNDERSTAND ANYTHING IT ATTEMPTS TO EXPLAIN. My recommendation is that you buy "THE COMPLETE IDIOTS GUIDE TO PRECALCULOUS" by W. Michael Kelly, an author who thouroughly prooves his TEACHING SKILLS, COMPETENCE and ABILITY TO SUCCESFULLY ARTICULATE concepts so students can actually get some learning out of the time they spend reading his CLEAR, HELPFULL EXPLENATIONS that will actually help you in precalculous.

A travesty for the money.......2006-01-19

The only reason I give it two stars is that the word problems and models are interesting and realistic. The student solutions manual is a rip-off because it does not model each type of problem, nor does it lend itself to greater understanding and clarification. I usually get straight "A's" in math courses because I pour all effort necessary into homework and understanding. I just find myself being frustrated every time I open this book. The examples in each chapter just give me a headache. It is assuming and poorly written. Colleges that require this book for courses in pre-calc and trig should think twice.

This book is very challenging. As you go from the first page to the last you see it gets more difficult. A must for all beginners in Calculus.

laughter/tears/recovery.......2000-07-10

I did not know what to expect when I first got this book. Before long I was laughing, crying and looking into the pain that another person had felt over losing a loved-one. The book helped me to realize that I could deal with my pain by embracing the memories, just as the author did. I strongly recommend this book to anyone, whether they are looking for laughter or guidance through grief.

Frederick Pollock and the English Juristic Tradition provides the first detailed historical account of one of England's great jurists. Until the later decades of the twentieth century, law developed little as an academic discipline in England. One exceptional period of intellectual growth, however, was the late-Victorian era, when a number of brilliant and now celebrated jurists produced works and devised projects which had a crucial impact on the development of English legal thought. Among this band of jurists was the great legal treatise writer, historian, and editor, Frederick Pollock. Compared with many of his contemporaries, however, Pollock has been largely overlooked by modern legal historians. Drawing upon a vast array of sources, Neil Duxbury offers a detailed picture of this enigmatic figure, examining Pollock's career, jurisprudence, philosophy of the common law, treatise writing, and editorial initiatives, and shows that Pollock's contribution to the development of English law and juristic inquiry is both complex and crucial.

Frederick Pollock Gets his Due at Long Last.......2005-01-14

It is shameful to recognize that there never has been either in this country or the UK any sustained examination of the innumerable contributions of Frederick Pollock (1845-1937) to English law and jurisprudence generally. This superb (and extremely expensive) volume by Professor Duxbury at long last corrects that deficiency. Too often, Pollock has been seen as a "junior partner" to more prominent figures, such as F.W. Maitland (in their invaluable "History of English Law") and Holmes (in their published correspondence). At last the focus here is on Pollock alone--the wait almost has been worth it.

This is not a full-scale biography of Pollock, such as Nicola Lacey's recently-published definitive life of H.L.A. Hart--rather the book concentrates on Pollock's substantive activities with one early chapter ("FP") devoted to biographical background. The research undertaken by Duxbury is simply amazing; he apparently has read everything that Pollock wrote (an incredible amount) and virtually all material written about him by others. For once, Oxford University Press has consented to placing the notes at the foot of each page, which is of tremendous assistance to the reader. Nonetheless, the narrative flows smoothy and engrosses the reader.

Duxbury is careful to study Pollock within the "English Juristic Tradition," and so one learns a great deal about English jurisprudence as a valuable background to the discussion. For example, there are highly incisive insights offered on the long-term impact of John Austin and his analytical approach upon English jurisprudence. Separate chapters address Pollock's views on the "sanctification of the common law," Pollock's substantive texual writings on English contract and tort law over many decades, as well as the enormous influence he exerted as editor of the English Law Report and the "Law Quarterly Review." All of this material is covered in around 320 or so pages, making for a convenient treatment. Simply put, for anyone interested in English law, jurisprudence, and the development of "our lady the common law," this book is an absolute necessity.
