Description:
A method based on the coupling microHPLC-microneb-ICPMS has been developed for Hg(II), MeHg^+, EtHg^+ and PhHg^+ species. Gradient elution using methanol and l-cysteine at pH 3.0 allowed the chromatographic separation of all species in less than 13min (total analysis time 15min). The direct coupling of microLC to ICPMS through a Micromist nebulizer permits the analysis of environmental water without sample pretreatment and derivatization steps. Nebulizer type, organic modifier and column length were the main parameters tested. The methanol content and pH of the mobile phase greatly affected the retention time and sensitivity of the method. Key factors to obtain high signal to noise ratio, at concentrations below 1@mgL^-^1, were found to be the nebulization step and traces of Hg present in the complexing agent. A detailed optimization of carrier and make up gas flow rates have enabled the nebulization of the methanol gradient elution with good mass transport efficiency, low organic solvent loading into the plasma and excellent precision. The performance of the microHPLC-microneb-ICPMS method developed was evaluated on a surface water sample filtered (0.22@mm) and spiked with 0.5@mgL^-^1 (as Hg) of each species. Precision (R.S.D., n=6) for all species of Hg varied from 0.5 to 2.1%. Detection limit, defined as three times the standard deviation (n=6), ranged from 8ngL^-^1 for EtHg^+ to 32ngL^-^1 for PhHg^+ and was noticeably lower than those reported in previous LC-based methods. Accuracy was suitable with recoveries ranging from 85 to 100% when tested at two levels (0.5 and 10@mgL^-^1) in groundwater samples. Recovery was matrix affected when water samples of high salinity (depurated wastewater and seawater) were used.

A sensitive microbore liquid chromatographic method was developed for analysis of protein-unbound levamisole in blood and brain of anesthetized rats. Microdialysis probes were simultaneously inserted into the jugular vein toward right atrium and the striatum of brain of the male anesthetized Sprague-Dawley rats for biological fluid sampling after the administration of levamisole (3mg/kg, i.v.) through the femoral vein. Assay of unbound levamisole was carried out using a microbore Phenyl-Hexyl column (150mmx1mm i.d.; particle size 5@mm). The mobile phase consisted of methanol-10mM 1-octanesulfonic acid which was adjusted to pH 3.0 with orthophosphoric acid (52:48, v/v) and the flow-rate is 0.05ml/min. The assay was performed by monitoring the wavelength of maximum UV absorbance at 213nm. The retention time of levamisole in rat blood and brain dialysates were found to be 10.5min. The present assay enhanced the detection sensitivity and enabled the determination of levamisole at 50ng/ml. Average in vivo recoveries of blood and brain dialysate were 46+/-4 and 12+/-4%, respectively, at concentration of 1, 5, 10@mg/ml. The result indicates that this method was suitable to investigate the disposition of levamisole and its penetration into blood-brain barrier (BBB).

The effectiveness of dual integral equations for handling mixed boundary value problems has established them as an important tool for applied mathematicians. Their many applications in mathematical physics have prompted extensive research over the last 25 years, and many researchers have made significant contributions to the methodology of solving and to the applications of dual integral equations. However, until now, much of this work has been available only in the form of research papers scattered throughout different journals. In Advances in Dual Integral Equations, the authors systematically present some of the recent developments in dual integral equations involving various special functions as kernel. They examine dual integral equations with Bessel, Legendre, and trigonometric functions as kernel plus dual integral equations involving inverse Mellin transforms. These can be particularly useful in studying certain mixed boundary value problems involving homogeneous media in continuum mechanics. However, when dealing with problems involving non-homogenous media, the corresponding equations may have different kernels. This application prompts the authors to conclude with a discussion of hybrid dual integral equations-mixed kernels with generalized associated Legendre functions and mixed kernels involving Bessel functions. Credo to human spirit's endurance.......2003-11-16

Yerrid reels you right in, detail after vivid detail. You get inside his head and to the heart of the common thread in all his cases -- the nearly indominable strength of the human spirit. Not only is it fascinating how his clients' heart-wrenching stories came to be his legal cases in the first place, but the way he builds and executes his strategies lets you see firsthand the way a top gun lawyer thinks and maneuvers. There are poignant parts, whole sections that will compell you to read on faster and faster, and Yerrid's verbatim closing remarks are phenomenal -- expressive, emotionally charged... just brilliant.

I'm not a lawyer and have never worked anywhere near the field. But what this is is an incredible opportunity for us as Americans to see the justice system at work for the people, written by someone who's clearly mastered it and is in it for the good guys.
