      Book Description

At the 1998 annual conference of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, we organized a roundtable discussion session titled “Innovating organizational justice: Cultural, value, and stakeholders' perspectives.” We were impressed by the high level of discussion that this session generated and decided to try to continue the discussion in a conference devoted to these issues. In the summer of 1999, approximately 20 scholars from seven nations met for two days in Nice, France. The theme of the “International Roundtable” on organizational justice was “Innovating research on organizational justice.” The format of the meeting allowed for extensive discussion of each of the papers that were presented.

A strong feeling that emerged from this meeting was that organizational justice research has much to contribute to our understanding of people at work. Further, our current research on organizational justice and the application of justice to managerial issues has in some ways been limited by the confines of our academic journals. The papers presented and discussed at the Nice roundtable clearly extended scholarly thinking in new and exciting directions. We invited a subset of the authors who presented their research at this meeting to submit their papers for review for the first volume of our newly developed series Research in Social Issues in Management. All papers were reviewed independently by organizational justice scholars.

            Book Description

This book records our current understanding of the observational and theoretical properties of objects known as ultracool dwarfs. It covers the state of the art in this new field. It is split into theoretical, observational and spectral classification sections. Each subject area begins with an introduction by an eminent scientist. It covers a wide range of issues, such as the transition from L to T dwarfs, dust and alkali metal modelling, companions, activity, the deuterium test, and brown dwarf variability, and contains considerable discussion about spectral classification schemes. The articles arose from an IAU meeting and they address researchers as well as graduate students.

              Book Description

The major theme of this book is analytical approaches to trace metal and speciation analysis in biological specimens. The emphasis is on the reliable determination of a number of toxicologically and environmentally important metals. It is essentially a handbook based on the practical experience of each individual author. The scope ranges from sampling and sample preparation to the application of various modern and well-documented methods, including quality assessment and control and statistical treatment of data. Practical advice on avoiding sample contamination is included.

In the first part, the reader is offered an introduction into the basic principles and methods, starting with sampling, sample storage and sample treatment, with the emphasis on sample decomposition. This is followed by a description of the potential of atomic absorption spectrometry, atomic emission spectrometry, voltammetry, neutron activation analysis, isotope dilution analysis, and the possibilities for metal speciation in biological specimens. Quality control and all approaches to achieve reliable data are treated in chapters about interlaboratory and intralaboratory surveys and reference methods, reference materials and statistics and data evaluation.

The chapters of the second part provide detailed information on the analysis of thirteen trace metals in the most important biological specimens. The following metals are treated in great detail: Aluminium, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, selenium, manganese, nickel, mercury, thallium, vanadium and zinc.

The book will serve as a valuable aid for practical analysis in biomedical laboratories and for researchers involved with trace metal and species analysis in clinical, biochemical and environmental research.

4 out of 5 stars Way under rated!!.......2007-05-27

I'm not sure why everyone thinks this book isn't any good. I bought this book for my differential equations class, and thought it was great! I found that the strong point in this book is that the author actually goes through and explains the concept in great detail before any examples are given (unlike most math text, including DEQ books). It helped me a lot because once the author got to an example I felt like I understood what was going on instead of having to go through the example two or three times before I had any idea about the theory involved in the topic. I also found the homework problems to be extremely well planned--almost every problem ended in a tidy compact solution (with the exception of the series solutions to the ODEs which were not nice at all).

I give the book only four stars because of two weaknesses: 1) the derivations of some of the formulas are a bit vague (I had a good time going throw and filling in missing steps and/or writing alternative derivations in the ridiculously large margins of the text) and 2) the RCL circuit was not explained well enough to be workable (I took electromagnetism the same semester and my physics teacher openly mocked the explanation of the RCL circuit in this book).

Overall, I thought this book was great and I was very happy with it. Maybe not the best book if you're trying to learn physics concepts, but it's a math class what do expect?

4 out of 5 stars looking for other introductory DE books? .......2007-04-29

I used an earlier version of Zill years ago to get through my DE course. It was much better than the required text by Boyce/Diprima (a book to be avoided like the plague).

I've listed most, if not all, of the available introductory DE books in my review of Boyce. Link to it: Elementary Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems , 8th Edition, with ODE Architect CD

4 out of 5 stars Do not blame the book. .......2007-02-06

Do not listen to the bad reviews. This is an excellent text for engineer types. People forget their calc 2 and they blame the book and/or the instructor. You will need int. by parts and partial fractions right of the bat.
I covered about 8 sections of DE's in my calc book during calc 2&3. Most students in the US cover some DE's during calc. The material in the first 2 chapters should be review for most of you. I never got stuck when learning the material, very smooth and intuitive explanations. The only time I needed extra help was during section 5.5 eigenvalues, completely different that presented in a linear algebra class, and during Bessel functions.
The electric circuit problems were great. Zill should add some finance problems, as their are none in the book. Also, this book has great drawings which you will appreciate during the multi-tank mixture problems. As a comparison the Ross DE book has great explanations and prose but no picture for the complicated mixture problems.
This class was not as tough as I thought it would be, the second half of calc3 was tougher. Zill DE 8th edition has all you will need to enjoy this fun and interesting course.
Zill's book is just as good as any other. If you want old school math major explanations, no modern pictures, check out Shepley L. Ross.
Do not blame others for your own shortcomings.

                1 out of 5 stars ZERO stars.......2007-02-01

Let me start out by saying I was really looking foward to this class... As a math major, I understand the significance of diffeq. I enjoy math, so this isn't a "I hate math rant." But now, I just can't wait for the quarter to end so I can throw this piece of crap in the trash... I'm not re-selling it because I was taught it is not nice to rip people off. Something the publisher and the author obviously have no problem doing to students. Our teacher recommended the book by Boyce/DiPrima, but I guess the school folded under the pressure and glitter the publisher no doubt used to get the sale.

The "book" starts out "the now classic 7th edition..." Yeah, right. Go ahead and pat yourself on the back, Denny ole boy. Any florid reviews of this "book" HAVE to have come from the publisher, as no student in his/her right mind would buy this "book" unless they HAD TO. First, the explanation of the subject is the WORST I have ever seen (and I HAVE seen others, just a little too late); I would advise not wasting your money on this "book" at all. Just get the Schaum's outline and whatever the library has on the subject and copy your homework problems from someone who made the mistake of buying this "book," or check out the reserve copy in your library. You won't miss anything, trust me.

Another review here said the explanation of Fourier transforms was explained as "like differentiation but different." Check. In fact, most all of the explanations are like that. The first chapter also requires that you be able to compose diffeqs, which is ridiculous since this is supposed to be a "first course." It would still suck if it said "refresher course!" I am lucky to have a good teacher, but even so, I am still stuck trying to slog through this horrible "book" once I get home. I spent more time trying to find a decent explanation just to do the homework, which is consequently, how I found out how bad this "book" is compared to others.

If you read this Dennis Zill, just please quit writing textbooks; you have done enough damage with this trash already.

This is way too expensive for a solutions manual. Plus it only gives solutions to every other odd problem. Not worth it for the amount of money they want. Save your money for a tutor.

1 out of 5 stars Keep Your Money & Find a Really Good Tutor Instead!.......2003-02-09

If you got an "A" in all of your Calc. classes, you won't need this book. If you got "B"s or "C"s, and are looking for guidance from this solutions manual, you will get very little. This book skips to every 3rd problem (i.e. 3, 6, 9, 12, etc.) and barely explains the steps. It gives the solution, and maybe 1 or 2 steps along the way. That's it. This book is very thin, only about 125 pages, and was the most expensive of all the solutions manuals I've bought before. This book needs to be redone to mirror other solutions manuals, which give nearly complete solutions to ALL ODD NUMBER PROBLEMS. In my opinion, don't waste your money on this book, instead, make sure you have an excellent professor, or find a really good tutor.

the book is very thin.( a big stack of blank pages at the end to give weight) it could habe been part of the textbook. they just want more money although the book is very needed indeed

4 out of 5 stars good author, every third problem, explinations.......1999-01-25

this textbook supplement is a very usefull tool for students. The original author, zill, is excellent; thus, the problems are somewhat tricky; furthermore, the solutions are worked out to good extent: they show the neccesary steps, but leave some work for the student; thus, knowledge of the material is still necessary.

4 out of 5 stars A great look at Japanese history.......2007-05-10

The Diary of Lady Murasaki is a very fine read, even by today's standards. Sadly short due to age, it still offers an amazing insight into court life of the time.

The book's coverage of both important court events and the personal outlook of Murasaki herself on everything from fashion to her contemporaries is eye-opening to say the least. Great attention is paid to detail where she was able to remember any detail at all, and when she does not remember detail, she always made a note of why. Perhaps the most refreshing part of the book is the honesty in her observations. She seldom seems to mince words, which is not something that I would expect from anyone at all familiar with court politics.

The book is especially valuable given the lack of other documents to come out of the period.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for Asian history buffs........2003-09-09

And a companion piece ot the Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon. The world of courtiers and courtesans, intrigues, affairs. Daily soaps will never be the same after you've read this book!

5 out of 5 stars A Slim Tome that Packs Quite a Punch.......2002-03-11

First off, Although the book i s 91 pages long there is a 52 page introduction. The introduction by Bowring is very well done, especially for those who are unfamiliar with Heian era Japan, like me. Bowring gives adequate introductions to the architecture, dress, religion, and other things of culture at the time. Although the info he gives of Murasaki Shikibu is scant, he does give the reader all of the information that is known about the author of the Genji monogatari. The diary itself is a wonderful resource of Heian era Japan. Murasaki Shikibu gives wonderfully detailed descriptions of ceremonies, dress, and glimpses of daily lives of females in the court. Bowring adds wonderfully helpful footnotes to aid teh reader. Also the illustrations inb the book are wonderful for showing how the Heian lady dressed and how a Heian era mansion looked. Good little book.

4 out of 5 stars An important Historical Document.......2001-03-19

Aside from the "tale of Genji" this is the only known writings of Lady Murasaki. The book is slim, as not much of her personal diary survived. However, it does have a good introduction, including a VERY helpful picture of a court lady in her dress. If you ever read any of these old court diaries, you come to appreciate a good picture like this because the women who wrote these books dwelled, almost obessivly on what they wore.

The clarity and quality of the writing is this slim volume is very good, as good as what you will find in the pillow book of sei shonagon. This book is also a facinating read in conjuction with the latest novel by Liza Dalby "the tale of Murasaki". Anyone interested in Old Japanese litrature should had this title to their reading list.

4 out of 5 stars Visions of the past, for those to follow.......2000-03-21

Diaries in the west are usually kept for personal reference. Such was not the case in ancient Japan or China. Diaries were kept for those who came after, as guidebooks and records of important events. This diary was perhaps written for the author's daughter, instructing her on how to behave and what to expect if she became a lady-in-waiting for one of the higher nobility. As such it gives a nice peek into how people (at least the author) viewed life about 1000 years ago, and also records some of the more exeptional events of the time. This is also invaluable as a look into the mind of the author of the Tale of Genji, and may even clear up some of the unease people occasionally feel while reading it regarding life during that time.
