Book Description
Entertainers and trainers have a lot in common. Both require an audience. Both require a polished, professional delivery. And both must attract -- and keep -- attention. Or else the show is over.
Unlike the audience at a show, training participants are often disinterested and easily distracted. In order to keep them tuned in and help them retain information, trainers are constantly in search of new ways to engage learners. Grounded in the latest adult learning and training theories, Show Biz Training provides creative techniques that use comedy, props, magic, theater, and music, giving readers all the tools they need to perform the many activities found inside. The book uses specific examples and provides step-by-step instructions, resource lists, and worksheets to help trainers support and further learning by engaging emotion, building rapport, creating the proper atmosphere, and crafting lessons out of a host of entertainment-inspired ideas.
Packed with fun, original concepts for serious educators, Show Biz Training is a highly informative way to set the stage for exciting, effective learning.

Show Biz Training.......2005-10-10
A magical book for trainers of any ability; I found it to be full of useful hints and tips. Once I had read the very interesting earlier chapters on the history of how people learn and the way in which society has changed, the book became a treasury of how to do things to make training enjoyable by using show biz techniques.
A companion book "Cartoons for Trainers" is next on my book list.
A Huge Company Asset.......2005-02-08
I bought this book and I must say that it is money well spent. I was given the daunting task of conducting the orientations and meetings at our company. I was challenged to keep people interested on what could very well be boring subject matter, so I bought this book. It has taught me so many techniques on how to keep the new employees interested at the meetings. When I first took the job, I thought that teaching was just another thing, that it really didn't matter how it was done. This book proved me wrong, it showed me what teaching was about and I appreciate it for that. I would have to recommend it to anyone. This book has been highly effective and is now an asset to the training program at our company.
Show Biz and Training = Learning and Fun.......2004-06-10
Lenn Millbower will explain show biz techniques to you and how to use them in training. What this means is that you can become a more effective trainer while your participants actually enjoy being trained. By learning the techniques you will be able to develop trainings that are fun and enjoyable for you and your trainees but most importantly that will be remembered by the participants. It is a comprehensive book that covers all aspects of a training session. Filled with examples and resources this is a book that should be in every trainer's library.
An excellent comprehensive guide to make training more enjoy.......2003-09-09
This book is an outstanding resource for all trainers, rookies and veterans alike. The reader is given numerous tips for improving training sessions, yet also learns about the underlying theories for why the techniques work. The concept of learnertainment brings a new perspective on the emerging expectations of workshop participants. I especially liked the product resources, including examples of how to use them in a meaningful way.
An Important Contribution.......2003-09-06
I just finished reading Show Biz Training. I am very impressed. In this book Millbower not only reveals what teaching is all about, but impressed me with the breadth of his knowledge. Just reading the footnote references tells me the author has thoroughly researched his subject. This is an important contribution to those whose goal is aid people to learn.

Mainly Uranus!.......2005-02-14
Writing this review, I was not sure if I should designate three or four stars to this book. In the end I opted for three stars although, if it were possible, I would rather give the book a rating of 3½.
This book was written in 1988, after the encounter of Voyager-2 with Uranus (January 1986) but before the encounter with Neptune (1989). As a consequence this book mainly focuses on Uranus. On a total of 180 pages, 142 pages (chapters 1-4) deal with Uranus and only 38 pages (chapters 5-6) with Neptune and Pluto/Charon.
The first chapter (44 pages) describes the space probe, including its technical problems, summarizes the encounters of the space probe with Jupiter and Saturnus and describes the encounter with Uranus, focussing especially on its moon Miranda. The second chapter (34 pages) describes the discovery of Uranus by William Herschel in 1781 and all knowledge of Uranus (including its rings and moons) gathered before the encounter of Voyager. The third chapter (22 pages) describes the findings of Voyager concerning the planet Uranus itself and the fourth chapter (42 pages) the findings concerning the moons and rings of Uranus.
The writing style is quite readable, albeit edging on the dry and technical. There are 50 photographs reproduced in the book, including 10 photographs of Miranda (some quite nice), 12 of the other moons of Uranus (many quite mediocre but probably the originals aren't that good either, being taken from great distances), 6 of Uranus, 9 of the rings (some nice, some quite grainy). Reproduction quality of the photographs appears only reasonable, not excellent. Many drawings and tables are included in the book although the drawings often look a bit "primitive".
The fact that Uranus is visited by only a single space probe makes this book, although written in 1988, still up to date. If you can find a good copy for a fair price, don't hesitate to buy one.

Book Description
This book, edited and written by an outstanding team of experts, aims to review the current research work on endofullerenes (endohedrally doped fullerenes). The book is based on a classification according to atom(s) encapsulated into fullerene. This allows an in-depth treatment of the characteristics of each class of endofullerene. The wide-range scientific community of chemistry, physics, material science and so forth will welcome this book as a valuable source of a new family of fullerenes, endofullerenes for developing their future science. Structural, electronic, and dynamical properties of endofullerenes such as He@C
60, Li@C
60, N@C
60, La@C
82, La
2@C

Customer Reviews:
An all time classic.......2001-04-17
From the masters of the finite element method, this may well be the best book ever written on the subject. In this book, the authors come across as the sages of ancient India preaching what they know is the best, guiding us, and setting a stage of research for the years to come. This is a monumental piece of work in the history of engineering.
The milestone in FE analysis.......2000-07-14
This book is really THE milestone, the only one I really enjoy. A page-turner, a must for all people into FE stuff.
Excellent book for starters in the field.......2000-01-31
This is the ideal book for beginners in finite elements, though the approach is slightly more theoretical. If you have a good background in linear algebra and are comfortable with matrices etc, you should have no trouble finishing this one. You can aim at the definitive work by Professor Bathe after finishing this one.
Zienkiewicz and Taylor: Professors of the Century.......1999-10-22
The enormous influence Zienkiewicz and Taylor have had on the profession of engineering as mentors, teachers, engineers, and researchers, places them among the very best professors this century has seen. May I take this opportunity at Amazon.com to pay tribute to such professors worldwide for the spirit they infuse, dynamism they create, and the legacy of selfless service and excellence they leave behind. Students of 21st century will be grateful that Zienkiewicz and Taylor went before them.
The finite element method bible.......1998-06-23
There is no more complete review of the finite element method. Furthermore, all notation is written in matrix from without any hard to read diadics. Every section gives explicitly, the implementation of the procedure discussed so there's no guess work required.
Book Description
Since its original publication in 1969, Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists has built a solid foundation in mathematics for legions of undergraduate science and engineering students. It continues to do so, but as the influence of computers has grown and syllabi have evolved, once again the time has come for a new edition. Thoroughly revised to meet the needs of today's curricula, Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists, Sixth Edition covers all of the topics typically introduced to first- or second-year engineering students, from number systems, functions, and vectors to series, differential equations, and numerical analysis. Among the most significant revisions to this edition are: · Simplified presentation of many topics and expanded explanations that further ease the comprehension of incoming engineering students · A new chapter on double integrals · Many more exercises, applications, and worked examples · A new chapter introducing the MATLAB and Maple software packages Although designed as a textbook with problem sets in each chapter and selected answers at the end of the book, Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists, Sixth Edition serves equally well as a supplemental text and for self-study. The author strongly encourages readers to make use of computer algebra software, to experiment with it, and to learn more about mathematical functions and the operations that it can perform.
Customer Reviews:
Good reference book.......2007-08-10
I found this to be a good reference for areas where I am rusty. It's explanations are too short and based on a users level of expertise that would make it too hard to learn a new area from this book, but its a great single volume reference.
Not for the undergrad and non-math majors!!!!!!.......2005-12-28
This book is lacking for sensible sturcture. Seems to put a reader into a maze and leaves them wondering where there at. There are enough topics but their too full of proofs to really understand what the book is trying to explain. This book would even be diffucult for a graduate student that's using it for review. The author seems to be proving his mathematical talent instead of trying to explain the topics in a manor that's understandable to the average reader.
Great for review of college math.......1999-08-16
This is an excellent book that summarizes the essentials of college-level mathematics for engineers.
I use this book as a review for incoming graduate students who have been out of college for a few years. It distills several college courses into one readable volume, yet it still has enough information and rigor to be a valuable reference book.
Book Description
This book uses simplified language about mathematics to promote active and independent learning; strengthening critical thinking and writing skills. A six-step approach to problem-solving, numerous tips, and clear, concise explanations throughout the book enable users to understand the concepts underlying mathematical processes. Beginning with the foundations of the mathematical process, some of the topics covered are: whole numbers and decimals; integers; fractions; percents; measurement; area and perimeter; interpreting and analyzing data; symbolic representation, linear and nonlinear equations; powers and logarithms; formulas and applications; higher-degree equations; absolute values and inequalities; slope and distance; basic concepts in geometry; and an introduction to trigonometry. This book can serve as a valuable reference handbook for engineering technicians, nurses, dieticians, job trainers, home-schooling professionals, and others who require a basic knowledge of non-calculus mathematics.

Book Description
James Agee brought to bear all his moral energy, slashing wit, and boundless curiosity in the criticism and journalism that established him as one of the commanding literary voices of America at mid-century. In 1944 W. H. Auden called Agee's film reviews for The Nation "the most remarkable regular event in American journalism today." Those columns, along with much of the movie criticism that Agee wrote for Time through most of the 1940s, were collected posthumously in Agee on Film: Reviews and Comments, undoubtedly the most influential writings on film by an American.
Whether reviewing a Judy Garland musical or a wartime documentary, assessing the impact of Italian neorealism or railing against the compromises in a Hollywood adaptation of Hemingway, Agee always wrote of movies as a pervasive, profoundly significant part of modern life, a new art whose classics (Chaplin, Dovzhenko, Vigo) he revered and whose betrayal in the interests of commerce or propaganda he often deplored. If his frequent disappointments could be registered in acid tones, his enthusiasms were expressed with passionate eloquence. This Library of America volume supplements the classic pieces from Agee on Film with previously uncollected writings on Ingrid Bergman, the Marx Brothers, Alfred Hitchcock's Lifeboat, Vittorio De Sica's Shoeshine, and a wealth of other cinematic subjects.
Agee's own work as a screenwriter is represented by his script for Charles Laughton's unique and haunting masterpiece of Southern gothic, The Night of the Hunter, adapted from the novel by Davis Grubb. This collection also includes examples of Agee's masterfully probing reporting for Fortune-on subjects as diverse as the Tennessee Valley Authority, commercial orchids, and cockfighting-and a sampling of his literary reviews, among them appreciations of William Faulkner, Virginia Woolf, S. J. Perelman, and William Carlos Williams.

Film Writing and Selected Journalism.......2005-12-14
Includes the classic Agee on Film as well as the screenplay for the classic, chilling Night of the Hunter, this is a must read for film fans of the WWII era. Never shy to express an opinion, Agee wrote with great passion and intellegence about the films of the period. I was esp. impressed with the features he wrote for the fledgling perodical - The Nation. When he discovered a film he liked, he would delve into great detail on what interested him in the work (sometimes pieces would continue from one issue into the next). I also appreciated his willingness to say that a film touched a particular interest in him and might not be to the taste of all readers (can you imagine a critic doing that today - actually putting him or herself out there as just another spectator as opposed to a critical god....) As with the theatrical writings of Ken Tynan - a treasure.
