Somewhat disappointing.......2004-09-13
I bought this book at a traditional book store -- it was on a discount to only $10.00 and I still think that I overpaid. I found many of the questions irrelevant to the step 2 testing environment, and some of the answers were just flat out wrong, and the book is only one year after publication. Explanations were also inadequate.
I would recommend purchasing one of the online question banks if you have the means - Q-bank is most like the boards, USMLEworld is significantly harder and less relevant, but both are far superior to this book. Save your money.
Excellent book.......2002-12-10
A very good book for USMLE Step 2. There are about 50% of questions in my USMLE Step 2 exam(I just took it in Nov/2002) are matching questions . You can find a lot of questions in this book are similar to the real exam, especially the matching questions.
a good companion with your basic text.......2000-08-20
better than it's counterpart for step1.however the level of difficulty is less than that seen on step2.

Customer Reviews:
A good question collection........2001-06-13
I found this book useful for step 2 review. The content is relevant and the question format is also very similar to that in the actual exam. All in all this book is good value for money.
Not as good as I expected.......2001-03-06
This book is not as good as I expected. I did the NMS 900 Qs first. Then I did 900 Qs from this book. They are much different! Although I rate this book 3 stars, do you know how many stars I gave to NMS? Six stars---if I were allowed.
But, I have to say most of the cases in this book are good---even very good. The problem is the case arrangement and the explanation. Most of the cases are too short---as some other friends mentioned in their comments. A lot of the explanations are really bad, the authors did not explain directly---why A or B is right. Most of the time, they did not explain why the other answers are wrong. For some explanations, you really do not know what they were talking about. In addition, there are some obvious errors---like A is the right answer and B is given in the explanation.
But anyway, I still learned a lot from this book.
Review?!!.......2000-08-27
I think that the book that I had must have been different from the one the other reviewers purchased, because my "Appleton & Lange's Practice Test for the USMLE Step 2" had poorly written questions, with many answers that were out of date and/or incorrect. The questions were nothing like those seen on the Step 2. Questions in the book were generally 2-3 sentences long, where as on the computer based test the most of the questions were paragraphs long. The only redeaming part of the tests were that sets of questions would build on one another, forcing you to take several looks at a question. For instance- based on answer for question 'a' and 'b', what is the answer for question 'c'. This type of questioning, however, is nothing like that found on Step 2. For a quick glance at a penny store, this would be an okay book. For improving test taking skill and knowledge at it's full price tag, this one's a joke. For some much better books look at the "Crush the Boards" and "NMS-tests"
excellent update questions.......2000-07-28
This book is an excellent source especially for computer based exam and for student who prefer to study online. Content of the questions and explanations are compatible with real exam. However, it gives your percentile of true answers right away. It would be better if it was at the end of each session.

This is an excellent source for especially computer based USMLE Step2 Exam and for student doctors who prefer to study online. Content of questions are similar to real exam. It contains excellent explanations as well. However, when you answer a question it gives your percentile of true answers right away. It would be better to give your percentile at the end of the session.

If you have a Mac computer - read this first........2001-07-20
I bought this CD-ROM as it was meant to play on a Mac computer, however, it only works with Operating Systems 7.1 to 8.1 so if you have a newer Mac it will not play on your system.
Total Rip off.......2001-07-03
The questions are obsolete and dated. The product format does not reflect the current exam format at all and for the number of questions I think it is over priced. There is far better software CD's available out there to help train people who are taking CBT - USMLE exams.
Good For Practice.......2000-04-13
This CD ROM was helpful in that you could start practicing for the new computer based testing. They do have explanations for why the answer is right, but do not explain why the wrong answer is wrong. Otherwise, questions were good, picture questions were also just as good. I have tried other step 2 software, and this is definitely the better of them. It's worth it to get practice.
Fun "computer-game" to prepare for the USMLE CBT format.......2000-04-01
This CD-ROM does not accurately reflect the USMLE format, but it still gives you a good simulation of taking a test on a computer. You get feedback on how well you did on each subject (i.e. Surgery, OB/Gyn etc) for each practice test, which will help you to know your weak points. It also has a review section that you can work on while you are studying the subject. The best thing about this CD-ROM is that it makes you feel like you are playing with a quiz-type computer game, and actually enjoy the test preparation.

This book really does help out the wet chemistry portion of the wastewater lab. Most of the procedures are comperable to what I do in the lab, and the background chemistry was invaluable.
Book Description
This Second Course continues the development of the theory and applications of stochastic processes as promised in the preface of
A First Course. We emphasize a careful treatment of basic structures in stochastic processes in symbiosis with the analysis of natural classes of stochastic processes arising from the biological, physical, and social sciences.
Customer Reviews:
very good book on stochastic process.......2007-08-23
This is a very good book you don't want to miss for studying stochastic processes.
A great book........2006-12-17
You know who your real friends are when they recommend you this book. This gem gives you a real appreciation for what is, unfortunately, the "old" - style of mathematics. Unlike the disasterous expositions in certain modern texts that will remain namesless - this text motivates all its topics with ample examples and doesn't beat you over the head with notation, jargon and arrogance. The topics are appropriate for a first course and for people that want to apply the material to their work or research right away.
sequel to a first course.......2001-04-18
Karlin and Taylor wrote a classic text on stochastic processes in their "A First Course in Stochastic Processes". The second edition of that text was published in 1975. This sequel came out in 1981. It is not only a second course but it is also intended as a second volume on a larger course in stochastic processes. The authors show that they are continuing from teh first course by picking up with Chapter 10 after the first book ended with Chapter 9. Many of the topics in the first book are continued in this text including Markov chains and Diffusions. Heavy emphasis is placed on point processes and their applications including Poisson and compound Poisson processes, population growth models and queueing processes.
A MUST-HAVE IF YOU WANNA GO TO WALLSTREET!.......2000-04-22
In financial derivatives, people are generally dealing with all kinds of stochastic processes. This second course focuses on diffusion processes and prepares one with adequate knowledge to go ahead and understand how options are priced. This book itself does not touch any financial theory and will be of great use to people in genetics, mathematics and physics alike (finance also, of course). The authors give a chart of logical dependence of all the chaptors so you do not need to read every single corner if you are only interested in a specific topic. Readers are assumed to know Calculus and some basic probability theory. Knowledge of Brownian motion is not required and the authors succeded in keeping the math accessible. Although a mature senior might undertake this book, math in this book is not sloppy at all. Another thing I liked this book very much is there are so many excersices at the end of each chapter and one can check if he understands the materials or not. It's quite fair to give this book five stars.

Book Description
The purpose, level, and style of this new edition conform to the tenets set forth in the original preface. The authors continue with their tack of developing simultaneously theory and applications, intertwined so that they refurbish and elucidate each other.
The authors have made three main kinds of changes. First, they have enlarged on the topics treated in the first edition. Second, they have added many exercises and problems at the end of each chapter. Third, and most important, they have supplied, in new chapters, broad introductory discussions of several classes of stochastic processes not dealt with in the first edition, notably martingales, renewal and fluctuation phenomena associated with random sums, stationary stochastic processes, and diffusion theory.
Customer Reviews:
This book is a mess.......2006-04-11
This book was published back in the 70s, before the advent of LaTeX. And it shows. In particular, it is no good as a reference for this reason: each time you try to look something up, the page is too overcrowded with symbols to find what you're looking for. In addition, to use this book to learn stochastic processes puts you through a whole lot more trouble than you'll probably need. Each deduction in the book is long, boring, and hard. Since I've read other books which are not, I'm going to assume it's the fault of the authors and their lack of LaTeX.
This book, not unlike quite a few in probability and statistics (e.g. Billingsley), is popular because old professors used it and don't bother to find a new one.
come to read prepared.......2002-11-30
Before going to the book, one advise is to have prerequisite to this topic, i.e. you need to come prepared with strong statistic and probability background since many of the derivation and proof assume the reader is well into the probability theory. I took the class from Stanford department of statistics, man, it doubled the time I spend comparing other statistics students since my training on probability is rather self-taught and not quite systemetic. Well, overall, it's a classic..
A wonderful introduction to stochastic processes.......2001-11-21
This is one of those rare mathematical books that is both deeply
informative, and a sheer pleasure to read. The book is written in a
delightful old mathematical style, where the authors take you by hand
through the difficult passages and derivations. The intuition about
stochastic processes is so well conveyed, and the mathematics so well
explained, that the book can be read with little or no recourse to
pencil and paper, much as if it were an armchair book. The book
presents a comprehensive overview of the theory of stochastic
processes, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone interested into
learning their foundations.
Better have a math PHd.......2001-06-08
Very mathematical oriented, not at all intuitive. Of limited use to financial quants without extensive formal training in advanced mathematics.
A comprehensive, systematic, and intuitive introduction.......2000-06-21
A remarkable well organised work. Every chapter contains all needed definitions and formulas, deep discussions of their meanings, proofs, and examples, all extraordinarily well blended. Also every chapter has two set of problems. The 'elementary problems' require applying the material covered. The 'problems' require to prove results, they provide an excellent ground to develop this skill. Some times the classic format proof-theorem is used, but usually the ideas flow: starting with a problem, introducing necessary definitions and finding a solution eventually a theorem is stated as a natural consequence.
The writing style is similar to the immortal 'Introduction to Probability Theory' and its Applications' by Feller, with a similar mixture of rigorous mathematics and probabilistic intuition. Though 'A First Course...' only reviews the basics, it has some common topics with Feller's and covers more advanced topics.
The style of the book is the perfect opposite of 'Introduction to probability Models' by Sheldon Ross, which is written in a much more flamboyant style, full of surprises and amazement, and requires the constant use of pencil and paper to follow the developments. These two sources can be combined to master the subject, despite the fact that students often find Ross's magnificent work too hard to follow. (Of course, some will say that it is a bad book, and that the professor can't teach...)
Even though 'A First Course...' is rarely used as a textbook (bad marketing?) after taking courses on multivariable calculus and basic probability, an undergraduate student is ready to read this book. Measure theory is barely used, and it is a surprise to see how far can one go using only probabilistic intuition. The book is also well suited to doctoral courses.
The consecutive chapters on Martingales and Brownian Motion are unparalleled, a unique collection of basic examples is used to illustrate results on Stopping Times and Convergence. Also, Measure Theory is introduced at this point in a very appealing manner. These concepts are then used to obtain classical results on Brownian Motion and other topics. Students interested in Stochastic Calculus (not covered in this book) and its many application in Finances, Engineering, Operations Research and Computer Science can acquire solid foundations here.
The chapter on Stationary Processes is also very special, it provides solid foundations for Econometrics and Time Series and it is often quoted in research papers.
In short: an excellent book to acquire solid foundations on Stochastic Processes, the only source I know for a simple and systematic introduction of certain topics.
Book Description
In Kristin Lavransdatter (1920-1922),
Sigrid Undset interweaves political, social, and religious history with the daily aspects of family life to create a colorful, richly detailed tapestry of Norway during the fourteenth-century. The trilogy, however, is more than a journey into the past. Undset's own lifeher familiarity with Norse sagas and folklore and with a wide range of medieval literature, her experiences as a daughter, wife, and mother, and her deep religious faithprofoundly influenced her writing. Her grasp of the connections between past and present and of human nature itself, combined with the extraordinary quality of her writing, sets her works far above the genre of "historical novels." This new translation by Tina Nunnallythe first English version since Charles Archer's translation in the 1920scaptures Undset's strengths as a stylist. Nunnally, an award-winning translator, retains the natural dialog and lyrical flow of the original Norwegian, with its echoes of Old Norse legends, while deftly avoiding the stilted language and false archaisms of Archer's translation. In addition, she restores key passages left out of that edition.
Undset's ability to present a meticulously accurate historical portrait without sacrificing the poetry and narrative drive of masterful storytelling was particularly significant in her homeland. Granted independence in 1905 after five hundred years of foreign domination, Norway was eager to reclaim its national history and culture. Kristin Lavransdatter became a touchstone for Undset's contemporaries, and continues to be widely read by Norwegians today. In the more than 75 years since it was first published, it has also become a favorite throughout the world.
Customer Reviews:
Kristin Lavransdatter II: The Wife (Penguin Classics).......2007-03-10
A great book for those who love to read good literature.
After the Romance.......2002-07-17
Most romance novels present us with the trials and tribulations of star-crossed lovers, who in the end marry and live happily ever after. The first volume of Sigrid Undset's fine trilogy, THE WREATH, took us through the romance between Kristin Lavransdatter and Erland, concluding in their wedding. Unlike most romance novels, however, that novel foreshadowed the difficulties that the protagonists were likely to encounter in marriage. THE WIFE is the story of that marriage, with all of its strengths and weaknesses.
Once again, Undset succeeds in depicting a wide range of real people, in all their human glory. Kristin begins the novel with a pilgrimage in penance for her sin (she was already pregnant on her wedding day), and while she finds forgiveness, she struggles through the rest of the novel to learn how to forgive her husband. Erland begins the novel as an irresponsible man who seems lucky to have someone like Kristin. By the end of the novel, we see him rising above anything that could have been expected of him as he faces torture and imprisonment with dignity. There are no good guys and bad guys here, just human beings doing their best, yet struggling with their own passions and limitations. Undset's insight into the human condition is remarkable. And while Kristin and Erland do not achieve the illusory, romantic happiness that is celebrated in most romance novels, they find themselves with something much richer: a marriage in which a husband and a wife have learned to love each other in full knowledge of their mutual failings.
Undset was a great student of human nature, and she particularly understood our failings and our need to find redemption. By the end of the novel, Kristin has learned much in life, but her journey is not yet over. And so we move on to the final volume, THE CROSS.
Kristin Lavransdatter II, The Bride.......2000-04-14
Sigrid Undset was the first woman to win the Nobel prize for literature. Since Kristin Lavransdatter was first published in America in the 1920s, succeeding generations have read it and found Kristin and Erland's story resonated in their hearts in a way that few books do. Undset has the rare gift of understanding the inner feelings of men as well as women.
Those who have struggled with the artificially archaic language of Charles Archer's translation will welcome this new version by Tiina Nunnally. She has also restored some parts that Archer eliminated, perhaps because he found them too sexually explicit for readers of English in the 1920s.
But, by all means start with the first volume, which, with volume III, is also available in the Nunnally translation.
Edmond Bliven
The Heart of the Medieval Mind.......2000-03-12
Sigrid Undset perfectly captures one of the essential personal conflicts of the Middle Ages: the strictures of the Church and a patriarchal society on love and marriage. Having followed her heart and her feelings of love, Kristin is unfortunately therefore placed at odds with her family and the Church. Her search for reconciliation (or at least some accomodation) is fascinating, a marvelous spiritual journey. The typical medieval mind often had the terror of hellfire hanging over it, and we see this in the early part of this novel, as Kristin, full of guilt, makes a pilgrimage with her newborn son to find redemption. The politics of feudalism eventually intrude and complicate her life, as her husband becomes more involved in court intrigues. This translation is most excellent: it beats the silly pseudo-Old English one from the 1920's. I hope Tiina Nunnally will eventually translate all of Undset's works!
What a great read!.......2000-02-01
This book is simply wonderful! I cannot wait until the third volume of this excellent translation is released. Kristen's life, though lived on a different continent, in a very different culture and society, so many ages ago, rings so true to contemporary life. The trials and joys that she experiences make this book a wonderful read. And what a romance it is, too! If your looking for a good story by a good storyteller, pick this up--start with the first book, though!
