Deeply troubling.......1999-07-31
I am a great and consistent supporter of A.A. However, as an Indian-American, I have seen serious problems which A.A. presents to Asian-Americans, which economically and educationally priviledged white women pay lip service to but do not confront directly. As a feminist I found most of Bergman's book compelling. Nevertheless, she is so glib in speaking of 'women and minorities', conceptually in tandem, that she feeds the stereotyping conducted by conservative critics of the Left's position on A.A. At some point we, as women of all races, have to confront the genuine problems of classism within the ranks of feminism, especially the white feminist elite. Prop 209 could have been defeated in California, were it not for middleclass white women pre empting the much more urgent protests conducted by minorities. 'Women and minorities' is a useful construct, particularly when addressing political unfairness. But Affirmative Action should *never* be an excuse for the feminist elite (especially academic feminists, who hardly speak for all of us!) to use discrimination as a soap box for their own interests. White women, as well as Asian-American women, are well represented as students in most of prestigious academia; it is in teaching jobs that there are still problems of representation.
Specious arguments and omitted ones.......1999-06-17
I must agree with the Nashville reviewer. I'm constantly floored by the reference (only ocasional, which itself raises questions) to "legacy" preferences. These are wrong, wrong, wrong. (If anything, an applicant with parents who attended that university -- especially a prestigious private one -- should be held to a *higher* standard. They'd damn well *better* do well, given their myriad advantages in life.)
Overall, not a terribly convincing book, and I did try to read it in the spirit of being convinced.
One of the best for her side of the argument.......1999-04-29
This book is a must read for those preparing to defend affirmative action. If you are anti-AA, I suggest you read this, you might find some of your previous conclusions reversed. In all, a good analytical study and conclusion on what AA is and should be.
Good arguements, bad conclusions.......1999-03-10
Bergman does an admirable job of detailing much of the blatant hypocrisy surrounding much of the anti-Affirmative Action movement. Conservatives (I am a Libertarian) expend much energy blasting racial, ethnic, and gender preferences, yet remain placidly silent when other manifestations of preferential treatment occur i.e. 'legacy' appointments to universities, subsidies to farmers and manufacturers (transfer of tax money to preferential groups), import quotas and tariffs(reducing the supply of goods for consumers by strangling competition for the benefit of manufacturers), etc. Some of the preferences she describes ('legacy' quotas at universities) are acceptable when practiced by private institutions (freedom to engage in contracts by individuals). Other preferences, such as subsidies, quotas, and tariffs, are the result of the extensive governmental interference in the economy and should be halted immediately. Bergman's socialism leads her to the erroneous conclusion that if a society tolerates some preferences (reduction in liberty), then the enactment of further preferences is desirable and beneficial. Wrong. In a truly free society, NO preferences should be assigned to ANY group, regardless of their status. As a sidebar, most of the arguements Bergman uses for racial preferences were already advanced by members of the NSDAP in Germany in the 1930s.
It sucked.......1999-03-08

Book Description
Given that thermodynamics books are not a rarity on the market, why would an additional one be useful? The answer is simple: at any level, thermodynamics is usually taught as a somewhat abstruse discipline where many students get lost in a maze of difficult concepts. However, thermodynamics is not as intricate a subject as most people feel. This book fills a niche between elementary textbooks and mathematically oriented treatises, and provides readers with a distinct approach to the subject. As indicated by the title, this book explains thermodynamic phenomena and concepts in physical terms before proceeding to focus on the requisite mathematical aspects. It focuses on the effects of pressure, temperature and chemical composition on thermodynamic properties and places emphasis on rapidly evolving fields such as amorphous materials, metastable phases, numerical simulations of microsystems and high-pressure thermodynamics. Topics like redox reactions are dealt with in less depth, due to the fact that there is already much literature available. Without requiring a background in quantum mechanics, this book also illustrates the main practical applications of statistical thermodynamics and gives a microscopic interpretation of temperature, pressure and entropy.
This book is perfect for undergraduate and graduate students who already have a basic knowledge of thermodynamics and who wish to truly
understand the subject and put it in a broader physical perspective. The book is aimed not at theoretical physicists, but rather at practitioners with a variety of backgrounds from physics to biochemistry for whom thermodynamics is a tool which would be better used if better understood.
Book Description
QoS, short for quality of service, is one of the most important goals a network designer or administrator will have. Ensuring that the network runs at optimal precision with data remaining accurate, traveling fast, and to the correct user are the main objectives of QoS. The various media that fly across the network including voice, video, and data have different idiosyncrasies that try the dimensions of the network. This malleable network architecture poses an always moving potential problem for the network professional.
The authors have provided a comprehensive treatise on this subject. They have included topics such as traffic engineering, capacity planning, and admission control. This book provides real world case studies of QoS in multiservice networks. These case studies remove the mystery behind QoS by illustrating the how, what, and why of implementing QoS within networks. Readers will be able to learn from the successes and failures of these actual working designs and configurations.
*Helps readers understand concepts of IP QoS by presenting clear descriptions of QoS components, architectures, and protocols
*Directs readers in the design and deployment of IP QoS networks through fully explained examples of actual working designs
*Contains real life case studies which focus on implementation
Customer Reviews:
A bible for all Service Provider IP engineers.......2007-05-30
This is an excellent reference book. This book is now the key reference I use for all work I do across the Middle East and Africa in designing next generation IP networks. IP QoS, MPLS TE and Capacity planning are often confused and their interaction misunderstood. This book clearly explains and simplifies all these topics. I have bought copies for all the lead designers I work with as it has simplified our lives immensly. I recommed it to all IP engineers.
Book Description
Written by a pioneer in the development of reliability methods, this text applies statistical mathematics to the analysis of electrical, mechanical, and other systems employed in airborne, missile, and ground equipment. Geared toward upper-level undergraduate and graduate students, it is also a valuable reference for professionals. 1961 edition.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent introduction to Reliability Analysis.......2005-03-09
Igor Bazovsky's 1961 Reliability Theory and Practice is newly available in a reprint edition by Dover Publications (2004). Once again, Dover should be thanked for restoring to availability a classic which, while dating to the earlier years, in this case, of reliability analysis in engineering, presents the field in exceptional clarity. Dover provides this service, moreover, at a price which is a small fraction of what most technical textbook publishers would charge for an exact reprint of even a forty-year-old textbook, or of what some used booksellers would demand for a remaining original edition in a discipline such as applied statistics (often much more than a new book would cost!). Contemporary texts frequently become mired in mathematical formulae, without presentation of a coherent, concrete idea of the area, so that is difficult to see the forest for the trees. Bazovsky's text is outstanding in explaining what reliability engineering and analysis is all about, in well-written, well-paced, well-organized, ordinary language. In order to fully understand the formulae which Bazovsky presents, one must have sufficient command of algebraic and exponential functions, some exposure to calculus, and an introductory level familiarity with statistics. Just the same, one could take the formulae on faith, and gain a substantial awareness of the issues and methods of reliability analysis, providing a decent foundation for more a more contemporary treatment of the field. Somewhere between, where many readers may be poised, the author presents in a logical, practically motivated exposition the fundamental ideas of reliability engineering, from simple failure rates, to more complicated systems, progressively introducing at a manageable pace such concepts as wearout, early failure, replacement strategies and policies, and series of components. Unlike authors who may initially introduce a subject in language accessible to a novice but rapidly change to an exclusive emphasis on complex mathematical relationships, Bazovsky maintains a conversational tone throughout, with explanation in plain language remaining dominant, even as progressively more complicated ideas are presented in symbolic language. Where formulas are presented, a rare balance is maintained between excessive derivational detail and a sincere effort to carry the reader along without undue frustration. The author's clear objective is to bring the reader along and to teach effectively, with concern for the student's developing understanding. Thus, this work remains an outstanding introduction to reliability theory and, thanks to Dover, can continue to provide a guide to those who are weary of an ethic of avoiding patiently-presented explanation and concrete, numerical examples which often seems to be de rigueur for professional self-respect among contemporary authors in quantitative applications.

Book Description
This book shows how to build in, evaluate, and demonstrate reliability and availability of components, equipment, and systems. It presents the state-of-the-art in theory and practice, and is based on the author's 30 years experience, half in industry and half as professor of Reliability Engineering at the ETH, Zurich. In this extended edition, new models and considerations have been added for reliability data analysis and fault tolerant re-configurable repairable systems including reward and frequency / duration aspects. New design rules for imperfect switching, incomplete coverage, items with more than 2 states, and phased-mission systems, as well as a Monte Carlo approach useful for rare events are given. Trends in quality management are outlined. Methods and tools are given in a way that they can be tailored to cover different reliability requirement levels and be used to investigate safety as well. The book contains a large number of tables, figures, and examples to support the practical aspects.

This book is a terrific read as biography/travel and adventure. From gourmet dining in the great cities of Europe, traipsing across the mountins of Iran to visiting the rooftop of the world in Nepal, Mr. Greenberg recounts a remarkable life replete with adventure. But what underpins all of it is an abiding love for, and commitment to, his family. With equal parts humor and humanity, Greenberg offers up a touching narrative pointing the way back for all of us to reflect on what matters most; a life surrounded by loving family and trusted friends. Proudly endorsed by his son,Harvey. Go get 'em dad!
Book Description
Presiding from 1875 to 1896 over the United States Court for the Western Judicial District of Arkansas, Isaac Charles Parker attained notoriety as the "Hanging Judge" responsible for law and order in Indian Territory. Popular accounts have portrayed him as a jurist driven relentlessly by a Biblical sense of justice to administer absolute authority over a lawless jurisdiction inhabited by bold outlaws. "Let No Guilty Man Go Free", the first new Parker biography in four decades, corrects this simplistic image by presenting Parker's unique brand of frontier justice within the legal and political context of his time. Using primary documents from the National Archives, Missouri court records, and other sources not included by previous biographers, Roger H. Tuller demonstrates that Parker was an ambitious attorney who used the law to advance his own career. Parker rose from a frontier Missouri lawyer to become a congressional representative, and when Reconstructionist-era politics denied him continued progress, he sought the judicial appointment for which he is most remembered. Although he sent seventy-nine felons to the gallows, Parker's public hangings were actually restricted by federal officials, commutations, and pardons, as well as Supreme Court rulings. In an ironic twist, during his final public interview, the "Hanging Judge" claimed he supported the abolition of the death penalty.
Customer Reviews:
A painful, poor read - a better editor would have helped.......2005-03-23
I knew the author through much of his teenage years and early adult life. Roger Tuller was the fat kid you pushed down on the way to lunch. The effect of this lowliness on the pecking order was a very bruised ego. I still remember him telling me, "I'm going to become a teacher AND I'M GONNA BE TOUGH. If they don't know their material in detail I'll fail them." It seems he was good to his word. It's a shame because verbally, Mr. Tuller can make old-west history shine and come alive. His story telling was a joy when we used to drink cheap beer and he's tell me of his vacations to Tombstone and points West. But now there is this technical field manual of a biography. The sentence structure of this book is indeed dry, parched and must be what it felt like to travel "cover to cover" through Death Valley in the old days. You find yourself skipping over words and punctuation just to get to the end of the bloody sentence. Recommended for those with sleeping disorders.
dry oh so dry.......2002-03-03
required reading for those heading into Native American vs. US Government studies. Have a can of Red Bull though!
Not Just a Hanging Judge.......2001-11-17
A gutsy, three-dimensional view of the Judge. Tuller's passion for the subject is evident throughout.
A new look at a interesting character..........2001-04-19
The first major biography of Judge Isaac Parker to be written since 1951, 'Let no guilty man escape' provides refreshing insight into the life and career of a man that western novelists and Hollywood have stereotyped as the "Hanging Judge." Since most of the standard works on Judge Parker were written a half century ago, the documents and resources used by Tuller help to paint a picture of the complex person that Isaac C. Parker really was. While minor factual errors and inconsistancies occur throughout, this book is a worthy replacement of 'Hanging Judge.'
