Book Description
"This wide-ranging and thought-provoking book provides an alternative approach to personal and professional leadership development. Although directed at headteachers, it has much to say to all staff irrespective of whether they are in formal positions of leadership.
Given the increased attention to professional development, this is a timely publication, and will cause those who read it reflect as well as providing a wealth of approaches and ideas which can be used in their school" -
Colin Parker, Headteacher of King Edward VI Aston School, Managing Schools Today
"This is an exceptionally good book that clearly brings together the author's experience as a headteacher and academic. Harry Tomlinson is an educationalist with deep insights into the personal development dimension of leadership. This is not your standard leadership book; instead it is a unique set of ideas, concepts and observations that comprehensively covers 'the how' of building leadership abilities. With twenty chapters, this is a significant resource for practitioners, leadership developers and academics" -
Professor Brent Davies, International Journal Educational Management
"This is undeniably, a terrifically rich and well-researched text which could be the starting point for a variety of personal development journeys. It has enormous value in asserting the importance of personal growth as the foundation for professional development" -
Times Education Supplement
"This book will undoubtedly help school leaders and potential leaders acquire a basic understanding of the essential elements in understanding themselves and others in the professional context" -
Times Educational Supplement
There are many books about professional development for leaders in schools and teachers, particularly in the context of performance management. Though this book takes account of these, the focus is initially very much on personal development through self-understanding and self-management, because this has to be the basis for profound professional development.
This book provides an alternative approach to personal and professional leadership development. For the first time this wide range of topics has been covered in a book on educational leadership. Practical activities are included to encourage the learning process. The first part of the book looks at the individual and the personal learning, development of emotional intelligence and modeling excellence which provide the basis for professional development. In the middle chapters the author focuses on the interpersonal and team development processes such as career management, coaching and decision making. The concluding chapters explore issues at the school level but always concentrating on the individual leadership development required. These include major current concerns such as knowledge management, the learning organization and the work-life balance. The author reaches out to include evidence from beyond the world of schools and education in order to enhance understanding.
This book provides an in-depth resource and a learning opportunity for all those concerned with educational leadership.

Introduction to Smooth Manifolds
ASIN: 0691048339 |
Book Description
This elegant book by distinguished mathematician John Milnor, provides a clear and succinct introduction to one of the most important subjects in modern mathematics. Beginning with basic concepts such as diffeomorphisms and smooth manifolds, he goes on to examine tangent spaces, oriented manifolds, and vector fields. Key concepts such as homotopy, the index number of a map, and the Pontryagin construction are discussed. The author presents proofs of Sard's theorem and the Hopf theorem.
Customer Reviews:
Exactly would it should be.......2005-12-30
I would suggest to use this book as a companion to more serious books on topology. Weighing in at a mere 51 pages, this book accomplishes what it needs to: a brief, succinct introduction to topology mostly based on the work of Brouwer. There is a nice mixture of topics, ranging from Sard's theorem to Poincare-Hopf theorem. The proofs and ideas are not fully rigorous or developed, but that would be quite a bit to expect from such a short exposition.
best math book ever written.......2005-02-11
Despite the lovely subject matter covered in this book, it more importanty gives one a taste of Mathematics as an intellectual discipline. It in outline shows how a mathematical theory - in this case Differential Topology - is constructed and consquently what mathematicians actually do and think about.
Anyone who would like to appreciate Mathematics as a field of study rather than just learn some math should open this book.
Better still, the prerequisite is only multivariate calculus!I have long thought this book should be the third year of calculus rather than differential equations or complex analysis.
Additionally, for the novice it is the only entry I know of into the mysteries of high dimensional geometry, that amazing almost unbelieveable accomplishment of the human mind.
There is a Star Trek episode in which a blind woman wears a dress of sensors which enable her to know more about her environment than a person can know from seeing. She knows exact distances and dimensions, can detect minute movements, can process the complete spectrum of light. In some sense she sees better. Modern topology and geometry are like that sensor dress for seeing higher dimensions. While we can not visualize the sphere in 5 dimensions, we know more about it from these mathematical theories than a five dimensionally sighted being ever could.
Today, mathematics is often considered to be just a practical tool - like a spread sheet - or a toaster oven. We forget its power to widen our imagination, to frame the unimaginable. This book reminds us of this and shows why Mathematics is the Queen of Sciences.
Compact and useful.......2005-01-29
This book packs a lot of interesting material into a small volume. E.g., I picked up another book recently that started talking about cobordisms right off the bat; despite my having a couple of shelves full of well-known Dover, Springer, Cambridge UP etc. books on topology, differential geometry, mathematical physics, etc., Milnor's tiny book was the only one I found that could help me understand what cobordisms are right away. The book also uses many illustrations to help understanding.
I demote this to 4 stars only because Princeton UP's price is a bit high; many years ago I was lucky enough to find a used copy of the old U. Virginia edition, and paid much less.
Yet another popular (YAP) Math text.......2004-12-01
In all practicality, for general math students this book is nice for the library, but by no means is it essential. In fact, it's not worth the $25 in most cases. There are so many outstanding Math texts / topics out there, it is doubtful and political that Milnor's Differential Viewpoint deserves its popularity.
I found this book helpful as supplementary reading for Calculus on Manifolds, so I am a minority student. (Majority student = Linear Algebra Done Right.) Spivak's book motivated the need to look carefully at the first few sections of Milnor's book. The definitions in Milnor coincide perfectly with Spivak.
I left Milnor's book with a good intuition about the inverse function theorem, manifolds, and the rank theorem. I also gave a small study to Sard's Theorem, but I had no need to venture into what apparently was the meat of the book...
It is arguable that the Inverse Function Theorem, Manifolds, and the Rank Theorem alone warrant buying this book, despite it only represents the first 2 sections of it, and is far from the total purpose of the book. Nonetheless, that's all I wanted to gain at the time I was reading it.
On the other hand, if you really are a Differential Topology student (small minority), you are the one who wouldn't need the review because you would know what you are trying to get from the book.
On the other hand, students who buy this book who don't know why will probably do nothing more than collect dust with it.
Take full advantage of the clear, encompassing exposition:.......2003-05-18
Do the exercises. Many were Ph.D. dissertation-level problems in the 1960s; today, they're aptly described as "elementary"- because Milnor MADE them elementary.
This book forms part of the toolkit you will need to fully explore the more modern work in dynamics, complexity, and applications (e.g., economics, physics).
The clarity of the exposition also forms an ideal example of how to communicate mathematics powerfully and simply.

Book Description
This book offers a new treatment of the topic, one which is designed to make differential geometry an approachable subject for advanced undergraduates. Professor McCleary considers the historical development of non-Euclidean geometry, placing differential geometry in the context of geometry students will be familiar with from high school. The text serves as both an introduction to the classical differential geometry of curves and surfaces and as a history of a particular surface, the non-Euclidean or hyperbolic plane. The main theorems of non-Euclidean geometry are presented along with their historical development. The author then introduces the methods of differential geometry and develops them toward the goal of constructing models of the hyperbolic plane. While interesting diversions are offered, such as Huygen's pendulum clock and mathematical cartography, the book thoroughly treats the models of non-Euclidean geometry and the modern ideas of abstract surfaces and manifolds.
Customer Reviews:
great history of geometry book, terrible introductory differential geometry book.......2007-05-11
Do not buy this inappropriately titled book if you are seeking an introductory text to learn differential geometry. It's not that the concepts in the book are so advanced, so much as not that much space is actually devoted to the subject. The author's real objective is to trace the development of geometry from Euclid to the (relatively) modern formulation of differential geometry, and as a book on that topic it succeeds admirably.
The core theme of the book is that efforts to prove the parallel postulate, or, equivalently, show that non-Euclidean geometries are impossible, inadvertantly, through their failure, led to the discovery of many fascinating areas of mathematics, such as hyperbolic and Riemannian geometries, and to the development of philosophical ideas about what actually constitutes mathematics and how it is independent from physical reality. The book culminates with the results of Beltrami and Poincare that showed that hyperbolic and Euclidean geometries are logically equivalent, in the sense that if there is a self-contradiction in one then the other is also impossible, thus putting an end to all attempts to disprove hyperbolic geometry. (Unfortunately, Marilyn vos Savant is unaware of this, or at least she was when she wrote an article some years back criticising Andrew Wiles's proof of Fermat's last theorem because it used hyperbolic geometry.)
As an appendix, McCleary adds a translation of Riemann's lecture "On the hypothesis which lie at the foundations of geometry," perhaps the most influential single lecture in the history of mathematics (and physics), in which, in the mid-1860s, he presented to a general faculty a talk (involving only a single equation) on the foundations of geometry that anticipated the concepts of a manifold and Riemannian geometry as well as general relativity and even hinted at quantum mechanics.
I used this text as a primary reference when conducting an undergraduate seminar on the history of hyperbolic geometry 12 years ago. For this purpose it was suited perfectly, but if you want to learn differential geometry by all means buy one of do Carmo's books or Gallot, Hulin, and LaFontaine.
not for the uninitiated.......2006-03-27
I'm a master's student in math. I bought the book thinking I'd use it for an independent study. I was wrong.
The book has interesting historical tidbits and some classical proofs, including material I hadn't seen elsewhere. However, it takes little time to explain to the novice exactly what's going on. It comes off more as a set of lecture notes than as a text for self-study.
For instance, in ch. 8 McCleary breezes through the basics of regular surfaces--coordinate charts, differentiability, implicit/inverse function theorem, the tangent space, orientability, the first fundamental form in about 19 pages. This is the same foundational material that folk like do Carmo or O'Neill rightfully spend 60-70 pages to cover.
His treatment of the Gauss map and the second fundamental form is even more schematic.
If I hadn't already worked the other books, when I got to McCleary's treatment of surfaces I would've been completely lost.
This book is best for people who know basic differential geometry already but are curious about certain historical aspects of it, not for people who are trying to learn differential geometry.
a great book!.......2000-10-23
This is a great book. The author develops the differential geometry of curves and surfaces. The endpoint is the vindication of Euclid's parallel postulate. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Very readable.
Excellent text connecting classical to differential geometry.......1997-03-24
This book is ideal for those with a long time interest in mathematics or the student just becoming interested in advanced topics. It successfully takes the concepts of classic geometry (Euclidean), clearly explains how the parallel postulate interacts with the other postulates and then introduces differential geometry as a natural outgrowth of hyperbolic geometry. McLeary's book succeeds by demonstrating the connection of modern differential geometry to the concepts in which we were educated. This is not a book for the casual reader, but includes many problems and solutions to the more interesting of them

Book Description
In Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, J.M. Barrie first created Peter Pan as a baby, living a wild and secret life with birds and fairies in the middle of London. Later Barrie let this remarkable child grow a little older and he became the boy-hero of Neverland, making his first appearance,
with Wendy, Captain Hook, and the Lost Boys, in Peter and Wendy. The Peter Pan stories were Barrie's only works for children but, as their persistent popularity shows, their themes of imaginative escape continue to charm even those who long ago left Neverland. This is the first edition to include
both texts in one volume and the first to a present an extensively annotated text for Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens.

A Neat Package.......2007-03-19
Hmm...., Peter and Wendy is obviously a five star book all the way, but what about Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens? Well, it's not really a complete book, first off. It's just a large section taken out of an earlier Barrie book titled The Little White Bird. So its very fragmented. Second, since it's more of a springboard the for ideas that formed the Peter Pan play than anything else, it repeats quite a bit of what we have already seen multiple times in many of the famous Peter Pan adaptations.
Even so, I did get a lot of enjoyment out of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. Aside from the first chapter (which isn't much fun if you haven't been to the gardens), I was quite entertained. Barrie's theory that people are born as birds and then turn into humans afterward is pretty wild, and I loved Peter's interaction with the girl who was captured by the fairies. Peter thought he played games the same way all real boys did but just embarassed the heck out of himself, throwing the hula-hoops or whatever those things were in the water. Poor guy.
So all in all, you have a great introduction followed by a good book fragment and topped off with an all-time classic. Not a bad purchase at all.
Half Great, Half Not-So-Great.......2007-02-22
If you've seen Peter Pan in theater and film, you might think that you know him.
If that is the breadth of your exposure, then you do not.
As it turns out, J.M. Barrie's Novelization of the classic play, told in "Peter Pan and Wendy," exposes to us a darker Neverland, with a self-centered and often borderline evil Pan, who serves his best interests first and only, almost without fail. The often humorous Tinkerbell is similiarly darker, displaying a genuine hate for Wendy among others.
That is not to say it isn't good. It is - terribly so. The believability of Pan and the characters around him is excellent, particularly given each one's specific backgrounds and situations, which Barrie provides for the reader in great detail.
"Peter Pan and Wendy" is a quick and interesting read, and read it you should, for it's literary importance shouldn't be overlooked.
"Peter Pan in Kinsington Gardens" is, regrettably, skippable. You may have never heard of this story, and there is a pretty good reason for that, although it provides readers with Peter's upbringing in the land of faeries, it is rather slow-moving and unnecessary background for the main event of the other story.
A Great Book!.......2000-11-16
This book is very imaginative and well written. James Barrie tells the history side of Peter Pan that most people do not know about. Each chapter tells a different story about Peter Pan's life in the garden. There are stories about Peter Pan living in the trees with the birds, to stories about how the fairies trick the humans who come to visit Kensington Gardens. This book is both funny and sad at parts, and will make you wonder if you were actually owned by a bird at sometime!
More creative than his later, popular stories of Peter........1999-07-22
If you buy this book, definately get an illistrated edition! The fairy images are gorgeous and worth treasuring. The story itself is beautiful: How Peter fell out of his tram, was taught by the birds to fly and finally returned home to find the window locked to him.
Book Description
Peter Pan, the "boy who would not grow up," originally appeared as a baby living a magical life among birds and fairies in J.M. Barrie's sequence of stories, Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. His later role as flying boy hero was brought to the stage by Barrie in the beloved play Peter Pan, which opened in 1904 and became the novel Peter and Wendy in 1911. In a narrative filled with vivid characters, epic battles, pirates, fairies, and fantastic imagination, Peter Pan's adventures capture the spirit of childhood and of rebellion against the role of adulthood in conventional society.
This edition includes the novel and the stories, as well as an introduction by eminent scholar Jack Zipes. Looking at the man behind Peter Pan and sifting through the psychological interpretations that have engaged many a critic, Zipes explores the larger cultural and literary contexts in which we should appreciate Barrie's enduring creation and shows why Peter Pan is a work not for children but for adults seeking to reconnect with their own imagination.
