Calm Energy: How People Regulate Mood with Food and Exercise
ASIN: 0195068270 |
Book Description
What is the biological function of daily mood variations? What is the relationship between mood and such factors as exercise, time of day, nutrition, stress, and illness? Drawing on his own wide-ranging research concerning subjective assessments of mood and on extensive research by others, Dr. Thayer presents a comprehensive theory of normal mood states, viewing them as subjective components of two biological arousal systems, one which people find energizing, and the other which people describe as producing tension. The author explains these two mood effects in relation to a complex relationship between energy and tension. Relevant research is systematically reviewed, and moods are analyzed in relation to circadian rhythms, exercise, nutrition, sleep, stress, and cognition. Perceptual and motivational effects of mood are also discussed, as are measurement and research design issues. Unique in its depth and comprehensiveness, this book will be of interest not only to researchers in psychology, biology, and medicine, but its clear style of presentation and the practical activities suggested for mood regulation will make it interesting to general readers as well.
Customer Reviews:
I learned new information about my body, mind, and spirit.......1998-07-23
Thayer's book gave me new insight on topics I have often thought about but haven't been completely clear on- my daily mood in relation to several aspects of interest, including exercise, caffeine, and sleep. An avid runner, I often wonder about how to optimize my mood through exercise. Thayer's clear description of exercise and it's effects on mood allowed me to understand my goals in achieving a peaceful state of mind through my runs. Also, his research on caffeine and mood provides good evidence that the optimal amount of caffeine (which is different for all individuals) can increase a person's affect. Finally, Thayer's work on sleep and mood is fascinating. I feel more secure in my thoughts about how much sleep I need each night in order to be in a positive mood state, whereas prior to reading his book, I wasn't completely confident that sleep affected mood in such compelling positive and negative ways. I would recommend Thayer's book to all individuals desirin! g to know not only more about daily moods but also more about personal daily patterns which are affecting mood in ways that one would never guess. I assure that all readers will gain a clear understanding of how to increase daily mood, and no individual can deny that such an increase has the potential to enhance one's life in very positive ways.

Book Description
A classic in the area of organic synthesis, Strategies and Tactics in Organic Synthesis provides a forum for investigators to discuss their approach to the science and art of organic synthesis. Rather than a simple presentation of data or a second-hand analysis, we are given stories that vividly demonstrate the power of the human endeavour known as organic synthesis and the creativity and tenacity of its practitioners. First hand accounts of each project tell of the excitement of conception, the frustration of failure and the joy experienced when either rational thought and/or good fortune give rise to successful completion of a project.
In this book we learn how synthesis is really done and are educated, challenged and inspired by these stories, which portray the idea that triumphs do not come without challenges. We also learn that we can meet challenges to further advance the science and art of organic synthesis, driving it forward to meet the demands of society, in discovering new reactions, creating new designs and building molecules with atom and step economies that provide solutions through function to create a better world.
- Personal accounts of research in organic chemistry.
- Written by internationally renowned scientists.
- Details state of the art organic synthesis.

Book Description
Concerned with successfully transmitting data through a noisy channel, coding theory can be applied to electronic engineering and communications. Based on the authors' extensive teaching experience, this text provides a completely modern and accessible course on the subject. It includes sections on linear programming and decoding methods essential for contemporary mathematics. Numerous examples and exercises make the volume ideal for students and instructors.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent introduction.......2005-01-25
Pros:
1. Rephrases of theorems in more understandable words other than just mathematical terms.
2. Use of analogy is particularly helpful.
3. Very readable proofs -- just about the right amount of details.
Cons:
1. Too many trivial examples in the first chapter.
Soft and pleasing intro to the (mathematical) coding theory.......2004-09-22
A very soft introduction to coding theory. All the necessary information in finite field theory etc. are reminded of and short proves are also included. It is 25 years ago that I studied mathematics and it still was easy to follow. If you start from scratch you obviously have to invest some time to get a grasp of the mathematics before you can understand the application to coding.
After having read this book I finally know what this error messages of "Failed 312 cyclic redundancy checks" actually mean and why cyclic codes are used in physical networks (good burst correction properties).
If you want to dig deeper in the subject and you want to learn about nonlinear codes and more: than the authors tend to reference Neil J. A. Sloane, Florence Jessie MacWilliams "The Theory of Error-Correcting Codes".
Book Description
Algebraic coding theory is a new and rapidly developing subject, popular for its many practical applications and for its fascinatingly rich mathematical structure. This book provides an elementary yet rigorous introduction to the theory of error-correcting codes. Based on courses given by
the author over several years to advanced undergraduates and first-year graduated students, this guide includes a large number of exercises, all with solutions, making the book highly suitable for individual study.
Customer Reviews:
Satisfied Customer.......2002-09-24
Prompt delivery, book was in great shape. I'd buy my next textbook this way!
Great Introduction to Coding Theory.......2000-03-27
The greatest quality of this book is that all the author expects the reader to have is a basic mathematics background (a Discrete Structures background of basic Set Theory). It contains consise explanations and straightforward proofs to all the essential theorems of the subject, but, fortunately, is NOT too elementary that it loses its true mathematical appeal. To top it all, it is chock-full of excellent applied problems in communications, image transmission, and even a party trick here or there (oh yes, friends WILL be impressed when you can error-correct an ISBN!).
In short, I think this book serves as a wonderful textbook into introductory Coding theory. And as for the subject of Coding Theory in general, maybe to spark a bit more interest in some potential customers, a thorough study of the theory will bring together all types of Mathematics (from algebra, calculus, number theory, set theory, finite geometry, and linear algebra).
All will be revealed!

Customer Reviews:
Stimulating bedtime stories.......2005-08-22
This classic book on clasaical mythology is exceptionally well written. Each story is short, most only a page or two. The adventures are succinctly presented and the language used adds considerably to the readability and excitement of the myths.
As one untrained in mythology, I have often found Greek plays and Homer to be obscure. But now, I can reread those classics with far greater understanding.
For those, like me, who have an interest in Greece and Roman, but whose background is in other fields, Bulfinch's "Mythology" is an outstanding nightly read. Just a few stories at a time will suffice, and you will delight in the endeavor for many a month.
A Mastery of Myth.......2004-06-22
Bulfinch's Greek and Roman Mythology, The Age of Fable, is an excellent source for understanding and appreciating the legends and myths of ancient Greece and Rome. Well researched, the book reviews the fables in clear, simple prose. An excellent source for students, writers, scholars, or the casual reader interested in classic mythology. Highly recommended.
Makes the Obscure Become Meaningful - and Fun to Read.......2000-11-03
"The Age of Fable" is an enjoyable, easy to read introduction to Greek and Roman mythology.
Today we lament that people have little time for the classics and even less for mythology. Bulfinch, writing in 1855, said much the same, "To devote study to a species of learning which relates wholly to false marvels and obsolete faiths, is not to be expected of a general reader in a practical age like this."
And yet without some familiarity with Greek and Roman mythology we not only have little understanding of Greek and Roman civilization, we also limit our appreciation for some of the greatest English literature and poetry. Shakespeare, Keats, Milton, and other English writers have assumed that readers are acquainted with mythology. And more basic, we also deprive ourselves of some fascinating and enjoyable stories and tales.
In writing "The Age of Fable" Bulfinch focused on "mythology as connected with literature", not just the fables themselves. He created a book that has remained easy to read and as well serves as an amazingly useful reference when reading 16th, 17th, and 18th century literature and poetry. I have repeatedly found that what was an obscure and murky reference to mythology took on meaning and significance by a quick visit to Bulfinch. I particularly appreciate his index of names: it really helps me track down those prolific deities.
I sometimes pick up "The Age of Fable" and simply browse a few pages, exploring a new tale, a new adventure by powerful deities with magnified human frailties. Buy a copy, you won't be disappointed.
Still excellent.......2000-08-25
This book provides a succinct introduction to many of the stories that underlie Western culture. The main part of the book presents a digest of Greek myths, arranged in a loosely along the "genealogy" of the Greek Pantheon. Included are brief synopses of the Odyssey, the Iliad, and the Aneid. These stories are no longer universally known as they were such a short time ago, and this book provides an easy introduction to them. At the end of the volume are included some stories of the Hindu and Nordic gods, but these, especially the Hindu stories, are not as satisfying as the Greek stories. [...] this book is a great buy!
Age of Fable: Greek and Roman myth. Bulfinch.......2000-07-09
Overall a good book for novice readers to of mythology. Good basic stories written in prose. Also has explanations of the use of myth in poetry. The footnotes are clear and concise, and where appropriate provide further information about the text you just read. My only quibble with the book is that it's called Greek and Roman myth, when they put the names of Roman deities first, and the name of the Greek dieties in parentheses. This is a book you read if you want to expand your knowledge base about mythology. This is not a book for people already know the stories. This is a good book for people who know nothing about greek myth, and are looking for a place to start.
Customer Reviews:
Thomas Bulfinch retells the classical myths for the masses.......2005-10-02
"The intelligible forms of ancient poets,
The fair humanities of old religion,
The Power, the Beauty, and the Majesty
That had their haunts in dale or piny mountain,
Or forest, by slow stream, or pebbly spring,
Or chasms and watery depths; all these have vanished;
They live no longer in the faith of reason;
But still the heart doth need a language; still
Doth the old instinct bring back the old names;
Spirits or gods that used to share this earth
With man as with their friend; and at this day
'Tis Jupiter who brings whate'er is great,
And Venus who brings every thing that's fair."
At the end of his Author's Preface for "Bulfinch's Greek and Roman Mythology: The Age of Fable," Thomas Bulfinch (1796-1867) quotes from Coleridge's "The Piccolomini" to represent the connection between mythology and literature. An accountant at the Boston Merchants' Bank, Bulfinch had been educated at Harvard and was a teacher early in his career. Seeing a need for something more than a formal translation of the myths and legends of antiquity, Bulfinch decided to popularize classical literature for all of us who did not know how to read Ancient Greek and Latin. Throughout his business career he collected hundreds of myths and legends, not only of the pagan era of Greek and Roman gods, but also Oriental deities, and Norse sagas. "The Age of Fable" was first published in 1855, and created the identification of the name of Bulfinch with that of mythology for the general population. For the last half of the 19th-century and the first part of the 20th, the volume was as much an American classic as "The Last of the Mohicans," "Uncle Tom's Cabin," "Uncle Remus," "Tom Sawyer," and "Huckleberry Finn."
When Bulfinch told these ancient tales the archeological study of Greece had not really begun (Troy was still considered a mythical location) and historians had yet to formulate any acceptable explanations for how these myths originated. Bulfinch was interested in telling these stories simply and for their own sakes, without being caught up in the Dead Language issues of the poems he excerpts (except to the extent that he uses the Latin versions of the names of the gods and goddesses rather than the Greek). Nor was he interested in drawing moral lessons from these stories, because Bulfinch's goal was to make the classical references found in the educated poets of his day accessible to the common folk.
The opening chapters deal mostly with the gods and goddesses, starting with the tales of Prometheus and Pandora, and ending with the "Monsters" such as the Sphinx and Pegasus. The next section is devoted to the great heroes, from Jason and Atalanta, to Hercules and Theseus, and then the lesser heroes such as Orpheus and orion. We then get to the epic poems of antiquity with chapters on the Trojan war, the adventures of Ulysses, and the adventures of Aeneas. The final section of "The Age of Fable" covers a lot of ground, including Egyptian deities, the Oracles, Poets of Mythology, Eastern Mythology, Hindu Mythology, and Norse Mythology, including Beowulf. I was weaned on Edith Hamilton's "Mythology," but I still appreciate Bulfinch's approach in telling pretty much the same stories in a more straightforward manner. More importantly, these stories have really become literature in their own right, and can be read for that enjoyment rather than for scholarly knowledge. This edition has the additional virtue of being illustrated by some of the world's greatest paintings, which is perfect because mythology has been the subject of so many great works of art from "The Birth of Venus" on down the list.

This exquisite edition contains ten of the most beloved Greek and Roman myths, including The Trojan War; Ulysses; King Midas; Orpheus and Euridice; Medusa, Pegasus, and the Chimera; Hercules, Daedalus, and Icarus; Cupid and Psyche, Baucis and Philemon, and Atalanta. Each story is illustrated with an evocative full-color plate and additional spot art.
Product Description
For almost a century and a half, Bulfinch's Mythology has been the text by which the great tales of the gods and goddesses, Greek and Roman antiquity; Scandinavian, Celtic, and Oriental fables and myths; and the age of chivalry have been known.
The stories are divided into three sections: The Age of Fable or Stories of Gods and Heroes (first published in 1855); The Age of Chivalry (1858), which contains King Arthur and His Knights, The Mabinogeon, and The Knights of English History; and Legends of Charlemagne or Romance of the Middle Ages (1863). For the Greek myths, Bulfinch drew on Ovid and Virgil, and for the sagas of the north, from Mallet's Northern Antiquities. He provides lively versions of the myths of Zeus and Hera, Venus and Adonis, Daphne and Apollo, and their cohorts on Mount Olympus; the love story of Pygmalion and Galatea; the legends of the Trojan War and the epic wanderings of Ulysses and Aeneas; the joys of Valhalla and the furies of Thor; and the tales of Beowulf and Robin Hood.
The tales are eminently readable. As Bulfinch wrote, "Without a knowledge of mythology much of the elegant literature of our own language cannot be understood and appreciated. . . . Our book is an attempt to solve this problem, by telling the stories of mythology in such a manner as to make them a source of amusement."
Thomas Bulfinch, in his day job, was a clerk in the Merchant's Bank of Boston, an undemanding position that afforded him ample leisure time in which to pursue his other interests. In addition to serving as secretary of the Boston Society of Natural History, he thoroughly researched the myths and legends and copiously cross-referenced them with literature and art. As such, the myths are an indispensable guide to the cultural values of the nineteenth century; however, it is the vigor of the stories themselves that returns generation after generation to Bulfinch.
