Needs Updating and Reorganization.......2006-06-12

I was forced to use this book to teach an HRMS course in 2006 (Canadian college course). This text is out-of-date and also poorly organized. Additionally, the supporting materials of PPT and end-of-chapter exercises said to be on one of the author's website are of very poor quality. The PPT consist of paragraphs of text copied and pasted from the textbook. This book needs a complete rework if it is to have any significance in today's world. If the book didn't have a Canadian author's name on it I don't think it would be used by a Canadian college. One other note... it's pretty bad when my students tell me at the beginning of the course that the textbook is terrible. Unfortunately I had to bite my tongue.

An excellent overall guide to understanding Diabetes........2000-10-16

This book is perfect for the recently diagnosed or anyone with a family member or friend who has diabetes. It covers all the topics and issues in a way that is intelligent, sensitive and yet does not flinch from the issues. From learning how to use your meter to dealing with family members, this is a diabetes information course and a sourcebook to refer back to over and over.

I used Diana Guthrie's book to educate myself when my doctor turned me loose with no diet, no information and no idea of how to use my meter. This book is NOT a self diagnosing cure-all, BUT IT WAS the band aid between meeting in a diabetes educational session with a medical professional (which took three weeks, and that's a long time to wait for help) and being scared and knowing nothing. Thank you, Ms. Guthrie. In addition, I have been recommending this book to fellow diabetics.

An extraordinary book on the subject, and absolutely invaluable.

Introduction to mysteries and myths of packing!.......2004-05-11

The text is packed with both ordered and disorderly discussions of several packing problems that arise in daily life as well as in crystallography, physics and abstract mathematics. A nice introduction to the solved and unsolved mysteries and myths of packing problems!! The text is an easy read, suitable for even high school kids, though graduate students and teachers will find it more illuminating and informative!

Excellent introduction to packing.......2001-02-25

A good starting discussion for packing problems, even though several issues are not covered (look at Erich's Packing Center for the next edition). Chapters cover Circle packings, sphere packings, the Hales proof, seed shapes, honeycombs, bubbles, atoms and crystals, fractal aggregates, The Giant's Causeway, buckyballs, higher dimensional packings, and various odds and ends. There are lots of illustrations and good discussions. I would have prefered for more to be packed into the book. Still, it's the best introductory book on packing I know of.

Reading it again in my fifties, I still found it to be one of the best novels I've ever read. Laughing Boy has a strong self. He know who and what he is and is happy. The woman he loves knows two worlds, that of the Navaho and that of the Whites. She is attracted to both and despises both. This is her tragedy. Laughing Boy loves her,loses her but we know he will go on.

I don't understand why this won a pulitzer.......2006-02-10

The story is sub-par at best, and written in a tedious and trite style. The plot development is slow, lacking any real action. Though I appriciate La Farge's sentiment, I think it is poorly expressed. The only thing I liked about the book was the character development, but that alone cannot salvage this book. Save your money and time and read Steinbeck instead. God I love Steinbeck.

Laughing Boy.......2005-04-02

A sheltered Navajo boy (Laughing Boy) marries a Navajo girl (Slim Girl), who has had experience living in the white man's world; in fact, she continues to meet with her white lover only for what he gives her in material things (she actually despises him). She hopes Laughing Boy can help her return to the authentic Navajo ways, but she is killed by the jealous Red Man before this can happen. Highly praised for its authenticity, much of LaFarge's writing struck me as stylized. The novel won a Pulitzer Prize.

When Cultures Collide.......2004-02-22

This 1930 Pulitzer Prize novel is a heart-rendering look at young lovers brought together at a time when their world is astir with changes of which neither of them can control nor understand. The emerging culture of Slim Girl who has been given a Christian education clashes with the traditional Navajo norms of Laughing Boy. LaFarge has given powerful glimpes into the lives of these people as it was being played out in the early years of the Twentieth Century. Within this context is a compelling love story that is near poetry as the author gives us an unvarnished look at their struggles.

My Favorite Book.......2003-01-19

My husband and I lived with the Navajos for 12 years. From 1950 to 1962. We lived in the most isolated parts of the reservation and got to know the Navajos well. I am a cultural anthropologist. This book describes the old time Navajos' way of life and how it was being destroyed by the superimposing Anglo culture, slowly, insidiously. It is also a love story. The Navajo landscape is realistic, every time the dialogue changes, it is written so I can hear a Navajo or a Hopi or an Anglo speaking.

It is a powerful book and one that I have read many times. LaFarge is a poet and he spoke Navajo so he knew their pattern of thinking, their "world view" so to speak. I can't recommend it too highly.

Mr. Alderman has done a superb job covering the most important aspects of Chapter 11 reorganization. The book is a valuable guide for any business professional interested in following the corporate bankruptcy process. As the Director of Bankruptcy Services for a national consulting firm, I regularly train accountants on bankruptcy issues, and I have found this book to be a perfect resource for that effort.

This book offers just the right balance of a usefull introduction with a strong glossary and key code sections. Its compact size makes it great for throwing in the briefcase for a read on the train or use in court. I would recommend this book to any business person who might need a good introduction to Chapter 11 Business Reorganizations.

This book does a really nice job of explaining how Chapter 11 Business Reorganizations work. The Glossary and Bankruptcy Cope sections make this a great reference source. Whether considering the strategic acquisition of assets from a business in Chapter 11, or working with insolvency experts to deal with a major account debtor, this book is a great resource.

From the supplier: Amdura Corp's succesful restructuring of its debts illustrate how companies can use the Chapter 11 mechanism to fight their way out of bankruptcy. The performance of the old-line machinery and specialty manufacturing company began to deteriorate after a disagreement between management and a major investor group led to a proxy fight in 1989. Amdura eventually filed for Chapter 11 protection in Apr 1990. The company's reorganization strategy involved filing a joint reorganization plan while keeping its separate three groups of debtors. This arrangement helped minimized the cost, delay and risk of litigation. With a skilled and persevering workforce, Amdura was able to pay its creditors and emerge from its bankruptcy reorganization. The reorganization has helped Amdura streamline and restructure its operations and lessen its debts.
