How to Start a Training Program/ Carolyn Nilson
What a great book. Definitely, a book I would recommend for any training program. A systematic guide on how to start a training program from training policy and standards to needs analysis and delivery and presentation tips. One of my favorite parts of the book was chapter 9 Delivery options and presentation tips, where it points out several different presentation and training methods and discusses each one. I also liked the train the trainer section where it gives you all the topics that need to be discussed while conducting the training. This is a great guide and I am very happy I bought it.
Training.......2001-04-18
I found this book to be very beneficial. The first section emphasizes the value of training programs by giving specific examples of struggling businesses which were aided by training programs. In another section, Nilson explores how to set up a training plan by using a business plan format. Each step of the way is thoroughly explained with helpful tips on how to make each step successful. In addition, Nelson offers suggestions on specific training methods. This book gives a practical insight into starting your own training program. Not only does she give advice, but she follows it up with specific details. These insights are backed by personal experiences. I highly recommend this book.
Great for new training professional.......2000-06-22
This book was insightful and full of easy-to-understand instructions on how to start a training program. From needs analysis through development, to marketing and delivery, this was a very useful book for learning the basics - in a hurry.

Stop Managing, Start Coaching! highlights the critical skill of performance coaching-demonstrating how managers can balance the roles of trainer, mentor, career coach, and confronter to improve productivity in the workplace. This pioneering guide shows how to: develop a practical and cost-effective human resource strategy and evaluate its effects on performance improvement; reinforce positive work traits through reward strategies; master and practice the art of employee ``self-esteeming''--the next step beyond employee empowerment.

Not Quite on the Mark.......2001-07-10
"Stop Managing, Start Coaching" has some very helpful insights, for example about giving feedback. On the other hand, I felt the authors could have more effectively expressed themselves in terms how coaching and management differ. While the authors suggest that coaching demonstrates more genuine interest and respect for people, they continually identify results of coaching solely in management terms-for example, increased job performance.
I think the authors would have better demonstrated the value of coaching (vs. managing) if they had emphasized that coaching balances the interests of both the coached employee and the employers. Where effective coaching increases the potential, self-actualization, and self esteem of coached people, enhanced performance is one of several by-products of people with increased potential and healthier self esteem. Rather the authors suggest, "Performance coaching is a series of one-on-one exchanges between you and your people. The purpose of each exchange is to help you solve problems, improve performance, or get results." This seems to sound quite similar to traditional command and control management-especially in terms of expressing little of "what's in it for me?" from employee' perspectives.
I think the authors' good ideas would be more evident if presented in a context giving credit to other positive initiatives toward human development. Instead, the authors dismiss the value of research, personality instruments, and leadership profiles and also the value of human resource development efforts. The authors may over generalize management malpractice. While there are many examples of "management malpractice," there are also many conscientious managers trying to do their best for both their companies and their employees. It seems we should be learning from the passion of these conscientious managers and working toward nurturing similar passion in our employees-instead of dismissing these conscientious managers and generalizing them as malpracticing.
While "Stop Managing, Start Coaching" expresses some valuable ideas, I think these effective ideas may be overshadowed lack of respect for and integration into other human development paradigms.
Useful AND challenging framework.......2000-04-10
This book is a useful and challenging framework for how to move from managing to coaching. It starts with an overview of "Contributions to Managerial Malpractice", including skills, attitudes and behaviors. Then they move on to explain the concept they call "Performance Coaching". They review the "Eight Elements of the Performance Coaching Process": 1. Developing a new human resource development philosophy. 2. Modularizing training. 3. Creating transfer of learning strategies.
4. Using human resource development professionals as internal consultants responsible for performance management systems. 5. Enhancing employee relations and creating an ownership attitude. 6. Using managers as performance coaches to do training. 7. Creating self-esteeming employees and teams. 8. Identifying reward strategies that motivate employees, improve their commitment, and get results. They use the "Four Phases of Performance Coaching" as a useful framework. 1. Developing a synergistic relationship with employees 2. Using the four roles of performance coaching 3. Developing self-directed and self-esteeming employees 4. Selecting rewards that build commitment and get results.
I believe the framework is useful, but the implementation will still be a challenge. The nuts and bolts "how-to" is left for the reader to figure out.

Not Helpful.......2003-03-10
This book does not give you enough information to really start your own training program. What information the book does give is outdated or not sufficient. It does talk about how to implement a program, but it does not give you the nuts and bolts you need to actually create a training program. Unfortuantely, my purpose in reading the book was to learn how to create a program for a small, new, growing business. Luckily, I have found other books that do a better job of explaining the whole process such as the book "Beyond the Podium."
Recommendation: Skip Nilson's book.

Book Description
In the only up-to-date book concerning high vacuum systems for chemists, Plesch describes the fundamental principles and construction techniques of this important method of isolating air-sensitive chemicals from the atmosphere. The intent of this instructional book is to enable chemists to decide whether high vacuum techniques (HVT) can benefit them and if so, how they can construct and implement an HV system. While other books on the subject have dealt only with metal HV systems for physicists, this unique approach to the glass HV system is intended for chemists in every branch of the field.

Quantum Field Theory
ASIN: 0521377684 |
Book Description
This introduction to the theory of quantum fields in curved spacetime, intended for mathematicians, arose from a course taught to graduate students and is designed for self-study or advanced courses in relativity and quantum field theory. The style is informal and some knowledge of general relativity and differential geometry is assumed, yet the author does supply background material on function analysis and quantum field theory as required. Physicists should also gain a sound grasp of various aspects of the theory, some of which have not been particularly emphasized in the existing review literature.

Customer Reviews:
Overall well done, but something's not quite right. . ........2007-09-15
I just finished reading this copy of "Sanditon", and it left me with mixed feelings. I'd like to start out by saying that I thought "another lady" was taking on an incredible task, and did a good job considering what she had to work with. I was quite surprised when I read in the afterward at which point the new authoress took over. The stage was set and the characters were introduced, but that was about it. "Another lady" basically had to come up with Sidney Parker's character all on her own, since he is only mentioned briefly 3 times in the original Austen fragment (some hints are given as to his character, but I certainly wouldn't want to take on the task of bringing him to life!). Jane Austen's works are so well-loved, and she has such a unique writing style and sense of humor, it would be extremely difficult to finish one of her novels in a way that would please everyone. In fact, the new author herself even apologizes for the deficiencies of her work.
That being said, I must confess I was a little disappointed when I'd completed the story. I'm an avid Jane Austen fan, and have read all of her completed and well-known novels several times, so I'm at least fairly familiar with her writing style. While Sanditon was not badly written, it just didn't seem to have that "spark" that is Jane Austen. Some of the characters didn't seem quite consistent between the fragment and the continued story in the way they communicated or acted. Nothing major, but just little things here and there. The hardest thing for me was that Sidney Parker, the hero of the story, kept reminding me of a Frank Churchill or Willoughby type character. Don't get me wrong, he didn't do anything dastardly or run off with another woman or anything. Somehow, though, some of the things he said and did, though explained later, didn't seem to match what Austen typically characterized in her heroes. I found myself wondering if I was supposed to trust him or not. And quite honestly, I think our heroine would face some frustrating situations when married to a man with that sort of character. Men don't change after marriage as much as we'd like to think they do. :) For my part, I'd much rather have a Mr. Knightely or Mr. Tilney to share my days with (which I actually have in my husband, on most days). :) The only other occurrence in the novel that didn't seem to match other Jane Austen stories was the abduction scene (which I believe has been mentioned by another reviewer as well). Not only was it a little unbelievable, but it didn't strike me as the type of thing Austen would have written. Yes, it was alluded to in the Austen fragment, but I think she might have handled it differently. It was almost a subtle girl-power, modern solution to a dilemma. At least that was my impression. I'll admit it, too, I made the mistake of reading the afterward first, so I knew as I was reading exactly what point the Jane Austen portion ended and the new portion began. This led me to read the story more critically than I might have if I had waited until the end to find out when the fragments combined.
Like I said before, the story is well-written. Most of the things I felt were different were things I couldn't even put my finger on. I found myself wondering, "Would Jane Austen have directed her characters in this way? What had she actually planned for each? Would she be pleased, or surprised at the development of her story?" I gave the book four stars because it was still enjoyable with some interesting plot-twists. I think the most important thing is to remember as you're reading it that it is NOT all Austen. (duh!) :) If you can just remind yourself of that and put yourself in the shoes of "another lady", I think you'll enjoy it. For myself, though, Northanger Abbey, Pride and Prejudice, and Emma are still my favorites! :)
Delightfully charmed!.......2006-11-26
I have read several sequals to Jane Austins book over the past month and have been sorely disappointed. The plots took on such outlandish twists and turns. The characters simply would not stay in character! Not so with "Sanditon"! "Another Lady" did a remarkable job at creating an interesting story without resorting to extravagant plots that were wholly implausible!
There was a decided change in Chapter 11 where the authorship changed hands. I can not say that it was the style of writing that struck me, but rather it was here where the plot began to thicken. Though I was amused by Jane Austen's characters in the first 11 chapters, they did not endear themselves to me until "Another Lady" took up the pen in Chapter 11. There Charlotte's character began to emerge and the hope of future suitors enlivened the plot! (Jane Austen does write romance novels, and for the first 11 chapters the suitors were ineffectual.)
I have to admit I was a bit surprised by Sir Edward abduction of Charlotte. However, like a previous writer, the comical end released me from any critical judgement!
In its totality, I enjoyed "Sanditon" as much as I enjoyed Pride and Prejudice and Emma. Sydney's character was every bit as appealling to me as Darcy and Mr. Knightley! My only criticism is that the book ended too soon! Just as I would like to read a sequal to Pride and Prejudice that accurately displays the marital life of the Darcys in true Jane Austen style, I would also like to see how the "Parkers" would move together in society. I believe that "Another Lady" could be trusted with both endeavors.
Charming.......2006-09-20
After having recently finished reading a horrible sequel to Pride and Prejudice, I was initially apprehensive about buying this book. Curiousity got the better of me; I gave it a chance, and I am glad I did. It is very hard to criticize the author, "Another Lady," when she offers up a humble apology at the end of the novel. Her completion of the novel is charming, as is her character of the observing Charlotte. I enjoyed the interaction between Mr. Sidney Parker and Charlotte, but at times Sidney's duplicitious nature was a little bit too much for me. My favorite character development was of Arthur Parker, who was really something of a side character. Arthur and his sisters are amusingly outrageous hypochondriacs, but as the novel progresses so does Arthur. I enjoyed reading as he fell in love and his affections went from selfish to selfless. All in all, I thought this novel was a noble effort that did Jane Austen proud. Quirky and interesting characters abound. My thanks to "Another Lady."
Gallant effort.......2006-09-05
I'm giving this book 4 stars in salute to the "Another Lady", who's done a better job of imitating Jane Austen's language at many points in this book than any other JA fragment-completer I've encountered. After looking at Coates' version of "The Watsons", which was awful, I appreciated all the more the restraint and skill needed to sustain the thread of Miss Austen's delicate style of literary weaving.
That said, "Sanditon" is far from perfect. Although the Lady carries on the language and plot in a convincing way for some time, one sees it break down after the sensible Charlotte Heywood, a la Bronte, falls dizzyingly and mind-numbingly under the spell of Sydney Parker. I was disappointed, as it seemed that JA had designed Charlotte to be a refreshingly strong-minded character. In the fragment she left, Charlotte says what she thinks, and observes with a great deal of keen good humor. Little by little this gets lost, and she turns to mush.
The whole abduction incident, too, while alluded to in the fragment, seems foreign to JA's style.
I rather like the Parker family, though, and think Lady Denham pretty well sustained.
In spite of its flaws, I did very much enjoy this novel for what it was, and felt that the Lady sincerely tried to respect JA's vision and tone. It would be interesting to see "Sanditon" dramatized. It has the marks of a labor of love.
So, don't expect the complete Austen experience here. But it's probably the best completion of the fragment done to date.
Sanditon - A preliminary draft completed in the same style.......2006-08-16
I had read this book many years ago and remembered being a little bored with it because it seemed that it just wasn't Jane Austen. I remember actively disliking the part written by Austen. Recently I have been reading a great deal of scholarship about Austen's body of work, and upon rereading Sanditon, I understand it better now.
First, it was Austen's practice to prepare a plan for a novel and to lay down a very precise time line. Apparently the fragment written by Austen is as far as she got with the plan. The fragment essentially consists of sketches of the principal characters. So, it is important to read the first 11 chapters as representative of how Austen worked as a mature author.
Second, I found it fascinating that with respect to Sir Edward Denham, Austen assembled a large number of short speeches and quotations that are very funny -- if one puts them into the context of being parodies of Richardson's book Clarissa (Richardson was one of Austen's favorite authors) -- and misquotes of Byron's poetry. In a finished Austen work, I suspect that she would have spread these out in the text and that they were noted here to keep them for future use.
Finally, the book opens with several significant references to real estate speculation, the new fashion for formal vacations, and the economic effects of the post-war inflation with references to Adam Smith.
Marie Dobbs did a good job of completing the book on the basis that it was to be a romance. I found myself thinking that it would be good material for a chick-flick.
What's tantalizing and frustrating however, is that the book shows a continuity with Austen's juvenalia, and marks out tantalizing leads showing that she intended to tackle some new themes as a contemporary observer. I found myself wondering at the end of this excellent book, whether Jane Austen really would have written a similar book, or if instead, it might have been more like Emma or Mansfield Park, but perhaps more comic.

In January,1817,Jane Austen began to write a novel, which she did not live to finish.
The fragment became know among her family as Sanditon, and for over a hundred years it existed as an unfinished manuscript,of interest only to scholars and unknown to the general public. A few years ago a long-time admirer of Jane Austen's novel, fascinated by the mystery of Sanditon, decided to try her hand at completing the story- following the clues laid down by the author and writing in a style modeled on hers. The result is a graceful romantic novel imbued with the delicate satirical humor for which Jane Austen is famous. Readers will find here a refreshing change from the violence and general gloom that pervades so much modern fiction.
