Within a rapidly expanding body of work exploring the role of hostels and day centres in the accommodation and care of homeless people, very little attention has been paid to the dynamics of the soup run. Soup runs have, however, recently become a focus of concern for the British Government who, echoing 19th century debates regarding the 'inappropriate' distribution of alms, argue that they are undermining attempts to reduce levels of rough sleeping by making it easier for people to survive on the streets. Drawing upon a postal survey, together with a series of interviews and participant observations, this paper develops an in-depth account of soup runs in Britain and explores the dynamics of the spaces involved. It argues that far from simply sustaining street homelessness, soup runs provide an important yet very complex series of spaces of care in the contemporary city. By their very nature, however-having a non-interventionist ethos, being transitory, and open to the public eye-the dynamics of these spaces differ in significant ways from those typical of geographically fixed spaces of care.

The statistical analysis of extreme data is important for various disciplines, including hydrology, insurance, finance, engineering and environmental sciences. This book provides a self-contained introduction to the parametric modeling, exploratory analysis and statistical interference for extreme values.

The entire text of this third edition has been thoroughly updated and rearranged to meet the new requirements. Additional sections and chapters, elaborated on more than 100 pages, are particularly concerned with topics like dependencies, the conditional analysis and the multivariate modeling of extreme data. Parts I–III about the basic extreme value methodology remain unchanged to some larger extent, yet notable are, e.g., the new sections about "An Overview of Reduced-Bias Estimation" (co-authored by M.I. Gomes), "The Spectral Decomposition Methodology", and "About Tail Independence" (co-authored by M. Frick), and the new chapter about "Extreme Value Statistics of Dependent Random Variables" (co-authored by H. Drees). Other new topics, e.g., a chapter about "Environmental Sciences", (co--authored by R.W. Katz), are collected within Parts IV–VI.

Lack of practical insight.......2001-09-20

Although the treatment of many extreme values distributions is rather complete at a theoretical point of view, very few practical considerations with respect to the actual way one should use these various EV models is provided. Unless you already know which class of EV distribution to use in your case, this book will not serve much. An overly important aspect of fitting distributions concerns the family of distribution to use for fitting a particular data, and here i haven't found much insight about practical considerations in this book. This is an important gap in this book because it is due to be practical.

On the other hand, the estimation of particular EV distributions is thoroughly covered, with theoretical (many references) and practical issues (for the estimation only) well described in every section.

Another negative point concerns the distribution of XTREMES provided with the book which is far from complete, and with bugs (changing on-line the values of the parameters of some distributions makes it crash...). I consider this book as a theoretically extended version of the manual of XTREMES, but not a self-sontained statistical book.

In summary, if you are interested in a very specific EV family, then this book can be useful, but not as a textbook. Rather go to Castillo (EV in engineering) for a good textbook on EV distributions.

The second edition came out in 2001 and although my previous review is listed here it refers to the first edition. Professor Reiss sent me a copy of the second edition and I browsed through it to see what has changed. Except for the words "Second Edition" in the upper left corner of the cover page the cover is the same as the original. A closer look through the text shows that there are substantial changes. The original text was 316 pages long with 35 references and a CD Rom on the back page. The new edition is 443 pages with 51 references and a CD Rom on the back page (this is version 3.0 of Xtremes).

The preface to the second edition tells you precisely what is added. There are 8 new contributing authors who are Stuart Coles , Jurg Husler, Daniel Dietrich, Dietnar Pfeifer, Humberto Vaquera, Jose Villasenor, Pieter van Gelder and Dan Lungu and apparently the two main authors will encourage more contributors for a third edition. The authors are very much interested in demonstrating applications of extreme value theory using their Xtremes software and generously invite others to join in.

The structure and theme of the book has not changed. Section I on modeling and analysis has replaced the section on robust statistics with a section called heavy and fat-tailed distributions. The sections are slightly longer in the second edition. Chapter 2 has an additional section called the auto-tail-dependence function.

Part II on inference for parametric models includes a whole new chapter on Poisson Processes (Chapter 7). In Part III on multivariate methods, Chapter 9 on multivariate maxima includes a new section on the Gumbel-McFadden Model and Chapter 10 a new section on bivariate peaks over a threshold.

Part IV on topics in Hydrology, Insurance and Finance is totally revised and consists of Chapters 11-14 in place of the original Chapters 9-11. The old Chapters 9 and 10 are now Chapters 12 and 13 respectively.

In Part V there are again five case studies but they are totally new ones with the new authors that are acknowledged in the preface.

In the appendix they have replaced the description of the XPL programming language with the StatPascal language.

emphasizes applications using XTREMES software.......2002-01-29

The software XTREMES was introduced by Falk, Husler and Reiss in their 1994 book "Laws of Small Numbers: Extremes and Rare Events". That book was mainly theoretical and the software was in an MS-DOS version for PCs. This text was published in 1997. For this text they supply a Windows (3.1 , 95, NT) version on a CD ROM.

In this book the emphasis is on applications in insurance, finance, hydrology and other fields. The first 10 chapters develop the theory and teach the use of XTREMES presenting dialog boxes and descriptions. The text is divided into 5 parts. Part I deals with modeling and data analysis, part II covers statistical infrence for parametric models, in part III elements of multivariate analysis are introduced, part IV emphasizes the application areas and part V is a collection of case studies using XTREMES. There are five case studies. One presented by Reiss but other presented by notable researchers including Tai Hsing, Jurg Husler, Ana Ferreira, Edgar Kaufmann and Cornelia Hillgartner. The appendices provide additional details on XTREMES. This is a very unique text that is valuable to anyone interested in doing research or applications of extreme value theory. Includes coverage of the parametric bootstrap.

With the life of Samuel Seabury on the pages discribed in detail and the photos that acompany the text you can get a real feel for the man and his time. All of this against the backdrop of New York City Politics. Samuel Seabury was known in all circles as standing for the height of ethics in his time. Something lacking on todays political landscape. A facinating read that never slows page after page.
