    Book Description

John W. Budd contends that the turbulence of the current workplace and the importance of work for individuals and society make it vitally important that employment be given "a human face." Contradicting the traditional view of the employment relationship as a purely economic transaction, with business wanting efficiency and workers wanting income, Budd argues that equity and voice are equally important objectives. The traditional narrow focus on efficiency must be balanced with employees' entitlement to fair treatment (equity) and the opportunity to have meaningful input into decisions (voice), he says. Only through a greater respect for these human concerns can broadly shared prosperity, respect for human dignity, and equal appreciation for the competing human rights of property and labor be achieved.

Budd proposes a fresh set of objectives for modern democracies—efficiency, equity, and voice—and supports this new triad with an intellectual framework for analyzing employment institutions and practices. In the process, he draws on scholarship from industrial relations, law, political science, moral philosophy, theology, psychology, sociology, and economics, and advances debates over free markets, globalization, human rights, and ethics. He applies his framework to important employment-related topics, such as workplace governance, the New Deal industrial relations system, comparative industrial relations, labor union strategies, and globalization. These analyses create a foundation for reforming employment practices, social norms, and public policies. In the book's final chapter, Budd advocates the creation of the field of human resources and industrial relations and explores the wider implications of this renewed conceptualization of industrial relations.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent look at the full scope of Employment Relationship.......2004-03-28

John Budd brings into focus something that is not always looked at in the employment relationship. He has brought ideas that helped me better understand why just $$$ is not sufficient in this ever changing world in order to retain good employees. New Human Resouces practices are starting to see this, but not able to explain why this trend is occuring. Budd gives an excellent overview of why employers need to do more than just 'show me the money' in finding and retaining good talent.

I think he develops a key point in talking about employee voice. Employee's need to know they are heard, even if the management can't necessarily do anything about it. If you want to know more, read Budd's book.

        Book Description

No profession pits man against nature more brutally than king crab fishing in the frigid, unpredictable waters of the Bering Sea. The yearly death toll is staggering (forty-two men in 1988 alone); the conditions are beyond most imaginations (90-mph Arctic winds, 25-foot seas, and super-human stretches of on-deck labor); but the payback, if one survives can be tens of thousands of dollars for a month-long season. In a breathtaking, action-packed account that combines his personal story with the stories of survivors of the industry's most harrowing disasters, Spike Walker re-creates the boom years of Alaskan crab fishing--a modern-day gold rush that drew hundreds of fortune-and adventure-hunters to Alaska's dangerous waters--and the crash that followed.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Great read!.......2007-09-02

This book is a great add-on, if you are a fan of the deadliest catch on the discovery channel. It gives a true account of how the crab boom started and the crazy amount of money you could make in just a 29 day season. I really enjoyed this book and would recomend it to anyone who likes to read about adventure situations.

4 out of 5 stars Sincere and full of insight.......2007-08-28

I literally devoured the book. If you love the sea, and had some experience with it, it will be very easy to fully understand the powers that these people where facing. The story shows in a very plain manner the continuous struggle of mankind in order to take advantage of the earth's resources. It shows many aspects of human nature: Love for the sea. Thirst for adventure and freedom. GREED, and what men can face in order to satisfy it. And (something that people who have been in the sea for a while completely understand), the incredibly simple and strong relationship that develops between crewmates.
I enjoyed very much reading this book

5 out of 5 stars Working on the Edge (crab fishing).......2007-08-20

I bought this book for my husband because he loves the tv show - actually, so do I! Anyway, he loved the book and is already asking me when I am going to order him more Spike Walker books. By the way, my husband doesn't usually like to read so I was particularly impressed that he liked this book.

        4 out of 5 stars Working on the Edge - a review.......2007-07-23

This book about Alaskan crab fishing is somewhat dated, but it gives a wonderful first-hand account of what crab fishing was like 20 + years ago.

        5 out of 5 stars Solid.......2007-07-23

This book offers its reader the opportunity to experience the life an Alaskan crabber at a slightly more in-depth level than just "Deadliest Catch." It is a narrative that sequencely takes you through the exciting "glory days" of the crab industry. The book is full of interesting facts and insights; however, the style flows like a suspense as you await each amazing event of these true stories.

              Book Description

Computational chemistry is increasingly used in most areas of molecular science including organic, inorganic, medicinal, biological, physical, and analytical chemistry. Researchers in these fields who do molecular modelling need to understand and stay current with recent developments. This volume, like those prior to it, features chapters by experts in various fields of computational chemistry. Two chapters focus on molecular docking, one of which relates to drug discovery and cheminformatics and the other to proteomics. In addition, this volume contains tutorials on spin-orbit coupling and cellular automata modeling, as well as an extensive bibliography of computational chemistry books.

Thomas M. Tomlinson. Before the United States entered World War II, author Tomlinson joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. Following Pearl Harbor, he and most of the other Americans serving in the RCAF were 'repatriated' into the U.S. military, most into the Army Air Corps.

                    1 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2007-09-05

I found the book to be disappointing. Entirely excessive on the sarcasm and political drum beating to make it an enjoyable read.

1 out of 5 stars Jarhead flyer with a serious attitude.......2007-08-09

I had great difficulty finishing this book. Tomlinson has a serious jealousy problem with some of the top allied fighter groups of WW2;e.g. Eagle Sqd., Flying Tigers, and Boyington's Black Sheet Sqd. He frequently makes statements that are contradicted by offical records. His constant snide remarks about Navy and Army pilots was very tiring. Also his writing skills left much to be desired; for example his constant use of silly cliches were very boring. I bought the book expecting to read about USMC Corsair flyers in the Pacific but read very little of actual combat. Of my extensive WW2 fighter pilot library this book is by far, the poorest.

3 out of 5 stars An amusing tale by a WW-II fighter pilot .......2007-02-05

I enjoyed this tale of a young mans adventures in trying to get into the war and his exploits while there.

5 out of 5 stars Great insight into WWII flying.......2006-01-26

I served in the Air Force but much later than the author. I found this book enlightening in that is shows the military hasn't changed and has always been the same. I found it enjoyable to hear about how Boyington's fame came to be and how that fame wasn't what was shown to the public 60 years ago.

I love the author's style of story telling even though he comes across as as feeling only Marine Corp pilots were the best and then maybe just those that fought early in the war.

3 out of 5 stars Marine is spelled with a capital M........2005-08-25

I rate this book with only three stars. I have a great deal of respect for someone like Mr. Tomlinson who set out with a goal of becoming a fighter pilot and then took steps to place himself in harm's way at a time when pilot losses in the Pacific were quite high. That said, I joined the Marine Corps in 1953 when there were many WW-II pilots still serving on active duty. I've heard a few of Mr. Tomlinson's claimed on and off duty escapades from some of those same WW-II pilots. His claim of flying a Corsair with 5600 rounds of .50 cal. ammo is not accurate. The maximum loadout for the Corsair was 2300 + - 50 rounds. What I found most bothersome was Mr. Tomlinson's failure, throughout the entire book, to use a capital M when referring to Marines.

I'm presently working my way through PA school, and this book has a ring to it I can't seem to keep out of my ears. Each new situation or patient I'm with brings back the words Selzer uses to present his stories. I'd strongly recommend it as a gift to those in MD or PA school--besides being outstanding writing, its fun to see the many ways medicine has changed, coupled with the countless ways it remains the same. Read especially "A Pint of Blood"...no matter how many times I read it, it still has me laughing.

5 out of 5 stars Notes from a veteran doctor's perspective, excellent writing.......2001-12-27

Having read Doctor's stories first, I was prepared for Richard Selzer's excellent writing. This book must be the origin of some of the stories that wound up in Doctor Stories (Imelda, Impostor, Chatterbox)

MOSTLY THE LIFE OF A DOCTOR IN PRACTICE OF SURGERY (70% OF BOOK)
Unlike Doctor Stories which have a wider range of stories, this book except for a couple of sidelines is about the craft of the Doctor, in and out of the Operating room and Hospital. Also, the doctor's perspective on the outside world. However, I wonder how many other doctors have his sense of service. Some of us can't imagine a high-priced surgeon performing the service he does in "Toe nails" one of the stories within.

DETAILS AND THE EMOTIONS AROUND THEM, FILL THIS BOOK:
Richard Selzer writing is poetic in his description of a doctor's musings on the Art of Surgery, the halls of the hospitals and the feel of working inside the human body. In many sense his reflections on his relationships with the tools he uses could the same a mechanic, a draftsman (of the 50s-80s), or the artist feels about the tools they use to perform their craft.

POETIC DETAILS ON EVEN THE MOST ORDINARY SITUATION:
He finds beauty in the minute details of life and has the gift to write about them. I also have his book "Mortal Lessons" that I hope to read soon as well. His books are addicting in the sense that you too also begin, if you don't already, to see the details of your own work and the relationships you have with the world around you. Either I think similarly or his thought process is universal, but he captures the magic of living and the impressions we all have at time. Even if you are not a doctor (and I'm not), you will find a sense of familiarity in his writing.

MEDICINE MAY BE WHAT HAS FINE-TUNED HIS SENSES:
Medicine however, has a draw that few other crafts do. It is the mystery of our own plumbing. It also has the human element of relationships and drama within it as well. The author does well to capture the patient's relationship with the physician. Richard Selzer does well to capture the detached relationship; a physician has with the body but not the soul of the patients, he treats. When he acknowledges the person within the body the relationship broadens and he as a physician has opened himself up to the pain as well. He does this from time to time.

                    ZEN-LIKE IN THOUGHT:
I found this book very Zen-like in its concentration of detail. If Richard Selzer decides to write a book like "Sweeping Changes" a book on Zen philosophy on cleaning, but except on the art of living, he would be well-qualified. He makes holy what many take to be ordinary. Bravo.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not great. Score: 7.......1999-05-28

Under the old Amazon.com ranking system, I would give this book a seven on a ten point scale. As a fellow surgeon who enjoys Selzer's writings, I thought this was a good, yet not great collection of ruminations. Some of the chapters were quite touching, some were funny, and some were quite plain. A few actually suffered from Selzer's exuberant imagination as he tried to stuff meaning and metaphor into patients' stories that didn't fit. Taking it all together, I'm glad I bought it, but I liked his book Mortal Lessons much better.

5 out of 5 stars For anyone in the human 'helps' professions.......1999-04-14

This book delivers a knockout punch of genuine compassion. Teachers, ministers, politicians; even peace officers can find value in these writings. Doctors are not healers, but servants. Dr. Selzer knew the meaning of humility.

4 out of 5 stars Selzer prepares medical hopefuls for the art of surgery........1999-01-11

Richard Selzer prepares those with an interest in surgery, specifically medical hopefuls, for the science of medicine through personal experiences that are shared with the reader in Letters to a Young Doctor. He shows that surgery, or being a doctor on a whole can have its days of redemption and it's times of tragedy. Selzer uses emotions to create an emotional bond between the reader, the writer, and the patients. Personal testimony of specific examples, tied in with metaphors, comparisons, and imagery, prepare the reader for what he/she must face in the future as a particepent in the field of medicine. The book is organized into 23 different stories and experiences used by Selzer to prepare medical students with what they will encounter as doctors/surgeons. This also includes 5 letters written specifically to the students of surgery in first person viewpoint. These divided sections of the book hold the same ideas, but are presented in different a manner each. One part might discuss the impact being a doctor may have on society. Another might focus on the aspects in specific, such as the respect one must hold for the tools used in surgery. But all these parts create a whole idea, that being a doctor has its success by in accompanied by the horrors. And this prepares medical students for the life of a surgeon. That is the beauty of Selzer's work. In preparing the young medical world for the future of which they wish to experience as doctors, Richard Selzer pushes the dismay and prosperity of surgery and being a doctor, a healer, into the light. He shares through personal experiences the emotions felt day to day. Selzer uses comparisons to support the specific examples and imagery to support the comparisons. He is thorough in his work and leaves an impression on his audience, the medical hopefuls of the world. The impact he has creates an effect that, in turn, touches everyone.

                    Book Description

New York Times contributor and beloved author Dr. Perri Klass offers a glimpse inside the doctor's office for aspiring physicians, medical buffs, and anyone who's ever been a patient.

If you've ever gotten wrapped up in the arcana of "E.R." or "House," or been absorbed by a piece in The New Yorker by Gawande, Groopman, or Nuland, or sat on that exam table wondering what's really going on in your doctor's head, then this book is for you.

Expertise versus commonsense practice; moral judgments on young patients or their parents; asking tough questions; death and physician-assisted suicide; daily life with a doctor's job (yours or a family member's); doctors as patients--Klass addresses the primary issues in the life of any doctor and, by extension, the lives of those for whom they care.

Perri Klass, M.D., is a writer, teacher, pediatrician, and mentor. In her frequent contributions to the New York Times, she takes on a host of issues particular to the life of a doctor--secrecy, ethics, fear, grief, and competition--with a warmth and wit her readers have come to love. Now, in the newest addition to Basic's ART OF MENTORING SERIES, she offers her guidance, and her stories, to a new generation of doctors and readers.

4 out of 5 stars The Doctor as The Mom Next Door.......2007-06-29

I can't remember a time when I didn't read Perri Klass's books and stories. As I recall, she was featured in the New York Times as a writing prodigy, and she continued to write when she made the improbable choice to pursue a medical career. As she pointed out, she wasn't particularly gifted in science and math. No one in her family studied medicine. But that's what she wanted. Her "becoming a doctor" stories will be relevant to anyone choosing a career, in or out of medicine.

Klass's gift lies in her ability to humanize whatever she describes and add her own unique combination of earth-mother warmth and cool analysis. So she describes her own experiences as a patient in a hospital, her interviews with young medical students and her memories of good and bad decisions over the years. It's like reading about the mom next door, a totally ordinary person...and oh yes, she's also a doctor and famous writer.

I don't relate this book to TV programs like Greys Anatomy and ER. Frankly, I don't like those programs. I compare it more to Jerome Groopman's book, How Doctors Decide, and Atul Gawande's Better. Like them, Klass accepts all the downsides of contemporary medicine but also appplauds both the field and her profession. She writes about getting into the lives of her patients. She remembers calling hospitals from distant vacations, tracking down test results and follow-ups.

As a pediatrician, she seems more humane and caring than most doctors. She acknowledges that pediatrics brings special joys -- you rarely deal with end-of-life issues. I believe pediatrics attracts the more humane physicians, leaving the rest of us with those who view patients as money-generating numbers.

Perhaps the most controversial (yet interesting) elements of the book are those related to medical decision-making. In one place, Klass reports a satiric look at how decisions get made: arrogance and prestige carry more weight than we would like to believe.

Klass also reports research suggesting that for a particular medical condition, any one of three options would be equally justifiable - intervention, tests, or watching and waiting. Thus it seems reasonable to default to parental preference.

But is it? Each option carries different costs. If my insurance company willingly pays for the most expensive option, what happens to my premiums - and the likelihood of being turned down for my own preference?

Elsewhere, Klass describes the frustrations of dealing with the realities of 21st century medicine - paperwork, HPAA and more. We soon realize that much or medicine remains more art than science and doctors are still human.

This book appeared to little acclaim just as Michael Moore's Sicko hits the big screen. It offers an interesting contrast - a micro, physician-based view, rather than the macro consumer view. If you're interested in a rational physician perspective, or just enjoy Perri Klass, Treatment Kind and Fair would be a good addition to your own bookshelf.
