Customer Reviews:
Covers all the basics.......2004-12-08
This book is highly useful for anyone trying to get an exact sense of how the training industry views itself, its purpose and its standard operating procedures.
Disappointed.......2003-03-12
I finishing my PhD in Cognitive Psychology, and I am new to the field of training. My purpose in reading training books is to discover whether or not I would like to pursue being a trainer, or at the very least use the information to help me in my current field. So, you can take my opinion with a grain of salt.
I know that ASTD is the big professional association for trainers, so I was surprised and disappointed in the limited usefulness of a book sponsored by them.
Other books present design and delivery in a more thorough manner. You can skim this book in a few minutes and get the key points. Whether this is entirely due to the lack of substantive content or due to the book's format is debatable, but I am thinking more the former than the latter.
The key points that are useful are not adequately backed up by sufficient supporting detail or research. I don't think the "Delivery" part should necessarily be backed up by research, but the "Design" part surely should. I would like to know why the techniques they suggest should work and how cognitive processes relate to those techniques. But my thinking that this is important may be more due to my own background, rather than a real flaw of the book. However, even if that is true, I have found other books that do give sufficient supporting detail and/or research.
The other books I recommend instead of this one are:
- Beyond the Podium by Rossett
- Developing Training Courses by Hassell-Corbiell
- Web-Based Training by Horton
- Multimedia for Learning: Methods and Development by Alessi and Trollip
- Building Expertise by Clark
A Classic Reference for all Training Preofessionals.......2002-02-10
A quick reference for all things related to Training Design & delivery. However, the coverage is surprisingly deep and some of the chapters are all you'll ever need to know about the topic.
Whether you want an overall picture of Training Design & Delivery or a beginner on his/her first steps and even when you become an expert, you'll find yourself referring to this book again and again.
The Handbook is divided into three section;
1) Instructor Based - Covers such topics as instructional systems design, using technology and games during training and evaluating training programs.
2) Design & delivery of Technology Based Training - If you want a more comprehensive coverage of e-learning, then you should refer to the newly published 'Handbook of e-learning.' However, this section remains quite valuable since it covers some of the other media.
3) Design & delivery of Self Directed Training - If they will learn on their own, then these are all the resources and tools you will need.
This Handbook, together with the 'ASTD Handbook of Training & Development' are essential reference for all Training & Development professionals. I predict that they will also be joined by the 'ATSD Handbook of e-learning' quite soon!

Book Description
Chemistry and Physics of Stratospheric Ozone will provide an in-depth account of chemical and physical properties of stratospheric ozone, which will be valuable to a wide audience.
The research of the last decade has produced as many arguments as answers, and the author provides a good account of both the accepted and provocative resolutions.
* Focuses on the important aspects of stratospheric ozone that are needed to understand most of the literature
* Provides extensive discussion of the natural and human-induced changes to the "ozone layer"
* Includes homework problems at the end of each chapter
Customer Reviews:
Excellent general book on stratospheric chemistry.......2003-01-30
This is an excellent book on stratospheric chemistry and transport. It reads much more quickly than the denser "Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion" reports issued by the WMO, but it still includes all the important details. Even though it specializes in stratospheric chemistry, many of the concepts can be applied to tropospheric chemistry as well. Highly recommended.

Introduction to Elliptic Curves and Modular Forms (Graduate Texts in Mathematics)

Book Description
The subject of elliptic curves is one of the jewels of nineteenth-century mathematics, whose masters were Abel, Gauss, Jacobi, and Legendre. This book presents an introductory account of the subject in the style of the original discoverers, with references to and comments about more recent and modern developments. It combines three of the fundamental themes of mathematics: complex function theory, geometry, and arithmetic. After an informal preparatory chapter, the book follows a historical path, beginning with the work of Abel and Gauss on elliptic integrals and elliptic functions. This is followed by chapters on theta functions, modular groups and modular functions, the quintic, the imaginary quadratic field, and on elliptic curves. The many exercises with hints scattered throughout the text give the reader a glimpse of further developments. Requiring only a first acquaintance with complex function theory, this book is an ideal introduction to the subject for graduate students and researchers in mathematics and physics.
Customer Reviews:
A most beautiful book.......2007-05-19
I originally bought the book for background on elliptic curves in cryptography. While this book may not be the ideal source for practical cryptography it is nevertheless a beautiful and fascinating example of how mathematics should be presented to the general reader.
Please note that although the book is described as an "introduction" it presents the mature works of some of the world's greatest mathematicians. The many beautiful theorems, expressions and identities which appear on almost every page (look at Chapter 3 and weep), can only be fully appreciated if the reader has a thorough mathematical grounding.
The unity of math!.......2003-06-01
The popular press leaves us with the impression that math is
intimidating. This wasn't always the case. In my time, the approach to how we teach math, and write books about it, went through a number of cycles, or trends; some of them now discredited;--or not!? Here is a sample: (1) I grew up with the boot-camp approach with its endless drills, (2) then came "The New-Math approach", followed by (3) "The back-to-basics" trend. (4)Following Eric Temple Bell, it became popular for a time to mix into the teaching of math a lot of history/ or dramatic stories about the heros in the subject. Finally, more recently:(5) "The Make-it-Seem-Easy-and Fun approach" and the motivational speakers; imitating popular TV shows.---Seriously, what I like about this lovely book is that it treats mathmatics as one unified subject, and that the authors masterfully highlight a number of unexpected connections between what otherwise are thought of as isolated specialties within math: The exciting new problems are at the same time also the old and classic problems in math: The elliptic integrals of Abel and Gauss, Jacobi's theta functions, modular functions, quadratic fields, elliptic curves, and Mordell-Weil. It is all beautifully presented. The book is selfcontained, and it is a pleasure to read. The clear and concise presentation is what makes the subject seem easy, or more importantly interesting and useful. I hope it will be a model for other math books to follow.
Makes the others Look bad.......2001-07-28
I got this book as a gift from a long time friend. He had trouble with reading it. It is only for that reason I give it only 4 stars. These authors make others that I have read on this range of subjects look bad: Fields Medalists included! A lot of it is that they just bother to give you the real mathematics with examples. I think the initial miss definition of the Riemann surface gives a false impression, because the explanations of ramified covers and toral elliptic lattices is just wonderful. Reading this book makes Dr. Singerman's papers look so much better! I was disappointed in the treatment of triangle groups, but the treatment of modular functions and gamma1 and gamma2 makes up for that. It is a masterful work... the best I have seen by a modern author. It reminds me of books by Ulam or Russell. Sawyer's little book is not as good!
long on content, short on abstract nonsense.......2000-11-25
This is a great book because it presents some of the neatest topics in mathematics, without the usual discouraging layers of abstraction and notation. It attacks the topics historically so you get some idea of the motivation and steps followed, instead of a compendium of the most general results and their most elegant proofs.
Also, as a previous reviewer mentioned, the book derives the bizarre and amazing continued fraction formula from Ramanujan's letter to Hardy. I had always wanted to see this, ever since reading "The Man Who Knew Infinity." It is satisfying to see this demystified, even if you don't fully master the argument.
If you literally have not seen most of these topics before, as I had not, you won't find this an easy read, but it's well worth while. I spent a long time on it, and couldn't absorb it all, but I plan to read it again one day.
Highly recommended.......2000-05-23
This book avoids the traps which would make this subject so inaccessible. Rather than frightening the reader with group theory and the sort of very advanced material that would fit it into a post graduate slot, the book starts with very little beyond geometry and complex number theory. The book carefully progresses to discussions on the projective line, and Riemann surfaces (never too much at once) to the inevitable subjects of the Icosohedral group, and invariant theory. It manages to do this almost without you noticing the depth of maths that is being covered - quite a feat!
From here on, elliptic integrals are discussed, and the work of Jacobi, Gauss, Legendre and Abel discussed freely, with many examples and clear pictures. The text is interspersed with exercises (some of which you can do with a few moments thought, others more difficult). I enjoyed this section (and the remainder of the book) for several very interesting short accounts of subjects slightly tangential to the main material.
[One of my favorites was the account of a letter with a amazingly strange but elegant identity with a continued fraction sent by Ramanujan to Hardy, and Hardy's subsequent absolute amazement... You MUST NOT miss reading that, even if it isn't what you picked the book up for!]
Then the book goes into the area I bought the book for - modular groups, and the solution of the Quintic. This subject draws mostly on work by Hermite, and later, Klein, but is presented carefully and slowly.
I was very glad to find this book. It doesn't race through the subject at breakneck speed, which is what some books on Galois Theory or Algebraic Curves do, and has illuminated quite a few additional topics for me. I guess that now I will be able to recognize the origins of so much hard maths now (and all those entries in the tables of integrals I never understood)
After all, this subject is now very important. Elliptic curves occur in many subjects - Cryptography, Information Theory, and of course, the proof of Fermats last theorem.

Book Description
This book surveys from a unified point of view both the modern state and the trends of continuing development of various branches of number theory. Motivated by elementary problems, the central ideas of modern theories are exposed. The authors have tried to present the most significant results and methods of modern time. Some topics covered include non-Abelian generalizations of class field theory, recursive computability and Diophantine equations, zeta- and L-functions. An overview of the major conjectures is also given in order to illustrate current thinking in number theory. Most of these conjectures are based on analogies between functions and numbers, and on connections with other branches of mathematics such as analysis, representation theory, geometry and algebraic topology.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Arithmetic Geometry Book.......2006-08-20
This Book is a cornerstone in Arithmetic Geometry.
It is the first time in a single Book so different
arguments find a common place.
Let me say that the idea of dividing the work into
three parts, depending on the approach, is entirely
new. In fact,
Part 1 starts with elementary theory & applications(primes, diophantine equations& approx)
Part 2 gives an account of recent ideas and theory
(ch.3:Logic & Recursion, with a sketch of proof of
Matiyasevic's Theorem;ch.4:Algebraic NumberTheory;
ch.5:Arithmetic of Algebraic Varieties;ch.6: deals
with Zeta functions and modular forms;ch.7:gives a
picture, complete indeed, of Wiles'proof of Fermat
Last Theorem)
Part 3 gives "Analogies and Visions",i.e. the link
between numbers fields and function fields(usually
this analogy is only admitted, but never explained
in other books) and other analogies involving many
recent arguments in Arithmetic Geometry (such as :
Schottky uniformization, Arakelov Geometry, Zetas,
Dynamics and Cohomology).

Book Description
This is a true story that shows the key role dreams and intuition can play in our emotional healing as it outlines the emotional struggles of a man coming to terms with his grief over his mothers early death from alcoholism. Setting the tone with a series of waking life and dream experiences, the story shows the conflict that adult children of alcoholics often encounter when trying to resume a normal life after the alcoholic is no longer present in their lives. Covering a twenty year time frame while using dream images as a backround, the story illustrates how emotional healing is often multi-layered and not as straightforward as it may seem. However, with dreams comes emotional awareness. This awareness propels the author into various situations that slowly lead him to a path of accepting his past and confronting some of his most painful memories of life with an alcoholic parent while at the same time allowing him to teach family and friends to work with their ! dreams as well.
While primarily a book about the healing nature of dreams and dreamwork, the book also touches on subjects such as adult children of alcoholics, recovery issues and shamanism.
Customer Reviews:
A Healing Story of Finding Truth & Inner Power In Dreams.......2005-03-08
Edward Bonapartian shares his deepest innermost thoughts and feelings in THE STORIES OF OUR LIVES, as he describes his gradual and triumphant healing from the guilt and shame of growing up in an alcoholic family. The premise of this book is that powerful healing can be found in the power of our dreams, because they help us get in touch with feelings and thoughts that otherwise remain buried deep in our subconscious. Bonapartian demonstrates through his own life experiences how dreams can be accessed even while awake, in order to facilitate soul retrieval and regain a long-lost sense of empowerment and joy in living.
STORIES OF OUR LIVES is told as a narrative which begins in autobiographical form with the death and burial of Bonapartian's alcoholic mother. This death marked a beginning for Bonapartian, in which he began to experience contact with his mother in his visions and dreams. The conflict between wishing to just move on with life and take time learning from powerfully emotional dreams was one that lead Bonapartian to share his dreams and visions in a dream group, so that he could experience complete healing and the full power and truth of his dreams.
STORIES OF OUR LIVES is an inspirational must-read book for all adult children of alcoholics, for it describes one man's success story in confronting and overcoming a lifetime burden of guilt, terror, and grief. Highly recommended!
Review of "The Stories of Our Lives".......2004-08-29
This is the story of how the writer has used his dreams to journey from a tortured past to a peaceful present. You won't find Freudian and Jungian interpretations and a lot of psychoanalysis just his clear and clean story of recovery. Well written and to the point "The Stories of Our Lives" is a good example of how paying attention to the images & messages that manifest in our dreams can give us clues as to which direction to go in life.
