Gene Logsdon offers an alternative to the decline of the family farm by explaining how to successfully engage in what he calls "cottage farming" part-time for enjoyment as well as profit. This book gives readers the tools and information they need to grow their own food in a sustainable and Earth-friendly fashion, but it also tells some great, hilarious stories and includes some truly beautiful and evocative writing. This is not a dry, "how-to" book; it's a really great read even if you haven't a clue about (or any interest in) farming.
Book Description
Gene Logsdon has become something of a rabble-rouser in progressive farm circles, stirring up debates and controversies with his popular New Farm magazine column, The Contrary Farmer. One of Logsdon's principle contrarieties is the opinion thatpopular images of the vanishing American farmer, notwithstandinggreater numbers of people in the U.S. will soon be growing and raising a greater share of their own food than at any time since the last century. Instead of vanishing, more and more farmers will be cottage farming, part-time.
This detailed and personal account of how Logsdon's family uses the art and science of agriculture to achieve a reasonably happy and ecologically sane way of life in an example for all who seek a sustainable lifestyle. In The Contrary Farmer, Logsdon offers the tried-and-true, practical advice of a manual for the cottage farmer, as well as the subtler delights of a meditation in praise of work and pleasure. The Contrary Farmer will give its readers tools and tenets, but also hilarious commentaries and beautiful evocations of the Ohio countryside that Logsdon knows as his place in the universe.

The Contrary Farmer.......2007-07-15
This book is full of advice that's as good as it gets! The humor and common sense are non stop!! Buy a copy for yourself and buy another one for any friend who smiles at the thought of farming!
Heavy on philosophy and light on How-to.......2007-07-11
I have read 3 books by this author and find them all to run a little thick on the philosophy side and much to thin on the how-to side. The authors passion and moral integrity literally drip from every page and if I was looking for a good read sprinkled with some general farming knowledge I would highly recommend this or any other books by the author. I was looking to compare his farming techniques to others so I needed more specific information which was unfortunately not included.
the best small farm book availabel.......2006-07-25
I've purchased every small farm book out there and this is the only book i'd recommend to anyone interested in starting a "small" farm. It gives you insight for pretty much everything you need to know to get started. Don't waste your time on any other books just get the Contrary farmer.
Fun to read and Honestly Inspirational.......2005-10-17
I enjoyed every page of The Contrary Farmer. The contents are true to thier purpose of informing the reader on a lifestyle. No time was spent on gloriying the way of life...just the plain and honest, wonderful truth. My only issue is that this book is native to the midwest in the specifics. This is wonderful for the folks in this area...not quite as helpful for this Southern Boy. Still, I enjoyed it!
Inspiring, but not for the bare-bones beginner.......2005-10-09
I am interested in starting up a small farm, and Logsdon's book offers a lot of old-friend advice on how to keep a farm without going broke or biting off more than you can chew. He draws from almost thirty years of experience to tell the reader the best way to raise livestock, maintain pasture and cultivated land, dig a pond, fell trees, and well, you get the idea. It makes me want to put into practice what I read as soon as possible. I look at the land in a whole different way thanks to this book. For those of you into the Bible, this book offers great instructions on being a steward of the land. If you take care of your trees and animals, they'll take care of you.
This book does leave me with a lot of questions, which is good and frustrating at the same time. Since Gene Logsdon grew up on a farm and has spent all his life writing for farmers, he might take for granted the knowledge he has that some of us new to agriculture might not. I still don't know what a combine is, or what a manure spreader looks like, or what keeps the layers warm in the henhouse over the winter. Logsdon mentions in the chapter about forestry that illustrations would best explain the safety precautions that he details with words. That makes me think that maybe there are no illustrations in the book because of restrictions set by the printer or editor.
I would also like to know what assets to look for when buying a farm, or how to go about buying one in the first place. Logsdon also lets on little about what his wife contributes to their 32-acre homestead. He refers to his work only in the first person singular, though obviously it takes at least two people to do the work.
In the end, though, these frustrations just make me want to read more books on the subject, which will make me a better-informed person for when it comes time to start a farm. I do think, though, that one should first take advantage of the apprenticeships that a lot of cottage farmers in Virginia and Maryland offer, if practical knowledge is lacking. It's hard to imagine putting into practice on a farm what we read from books without first getting a feel for it somewhere else.
Despite my frustrations and suggestions, this is definately a book to buy and not check out from the library if you plan on farming at all. It can serve as a valuable source of reference throughout the year.

Gene Logsdon has done it again! One of his earlier books, The Contrary Farmer, is one of the most moving, sensible, readable books about sustainable farming on the market. Now Logsdon successfully applies that wry wit, wisdom, and storytelling faculty to gardening. The result is a perceptive and inspirational volume: it is nearly impossible to resist dreaming about getting out there and raising your own food after reading this intelligent, enjoyable book.
Logsdon's voice is utterly personal and sensible: he uses his experiences as well as tales of people he knows to point out absurdities of modern agricultural horticultural silliness. This same humor and clear-headedness are employed in considering the futility of industrialized farming, pesticide use, and the highly destructive methods of corporate and commercial farming and gardening.
Customer Reviews:
More inspirational than practical.......2003-05-09
This is the second book of Logsdon's that I have read, and I intend to read the rest of them. In many ways, he reminds me of the old farmers who would sit around the barber shop when I was kid. Mr. Logsdon has opinions on just about everything, and isn't afraid to express them. One gets the distinct impression that he really won't be too bothered by whether his readers are persuaded by his opinions or not.
Amidst his (admittedly spot on) diatribes about industrial farming, government meddling, and modern day prohibitionists he does manage to paint a lovely picture of the garden as the embodiment of the urge to simplicity and living close to the land. Further, he makes it clear that the reader can start whereever they already are, even if it means growing a few plants in a window box.
There is plenty of practical advice, but it is delivered anecdotally. There aren't any pictures or diagrams, but he describes his compost heated seed starting bed so well that one doesn't need a diagram. Likewise for what he calls mulch-bed gardening (basically lasagna gardening). The topics covered include the reason for gardening, vegetable gardening, small scale livestock husbandry (read: pet chickens, at least until they quit laying and end up in the stew pot), and aquatic gardening (ponds and such).
The key thing to keep in mind is that this book is an invitation to gardening, and not a primer or a manual. If you are looking for a how-to guide, this isn't your best book. If you are wondering whether you might enjoy gardening, or if you are already a gardener and you need something to do between the first frost and the last frost, this is an excellent read.
Good reading and inspirational.......2002-04-19
While this book is has plenty of good information in it, I think its real value is to provide a peek into life in the country. His practical view of life can be applied to all walks of life
Useful information buried in a compost heap of poor writing........1999-05-27
I had previously read and enjoyed (I think) two of Logsdon's earlier books, At Nature's Pace and The Contrary Farmer, but I was barely able to get through this more recent contribution. Logsdon is clearly knowledgeable about a wide range of small farming and gardening practices. There is much useful information in this book, particularly on mulching garden beds, growing small grains, and using chickens in movable cages for fertilization and insect control. However, acquiring this information, which is also available elsewhere, is a painful experience. On almost every page the defects in Logsdon's writing and thinking stand out. He makes absurd generalizations and broad pronouncements, on all sorts of topics, based on what is clearly cursory, limited understanding of the subjects. A fine example of the latter is to be found in the last two pages of the book, where he discusses the evolution of monarch and viceroy butterflies, and the mimicry of the former by the latter. His reasoning in the course of making arguments is often nearly incomprehensible, and time after time made me shake my head in disbelief. One example (p. 126): "I do not believe in letting nature take its course all the time. In a world where one ethnic group of Rwandans hacked a million of another ethnic group to death with machetes recently, I don't have the time nor the luxury to debate whether I should kill a feral cat that is endangering a rare species of songbird. To make the point clearly [!], if I were a judge, I could sentence a vicious human criminal to death under the law--with fewer qualms than I feel when killing a poor dumb pest animal, which is merely the victim of a situation that is as much my fault, as a human, as the animal's fault. But in either case I would act, not lie down passively and let someone else make the decision. If this sounds unconscionably brutal to you, try arguing the passive-resistance viewpoint with a brood of termites under or house or a panther eying up your child." I just can't follow this. Other, shorter instances abound, as Logsdon draws from his misunderstanding and fractional knowledge of history, ecology, evolutionary biology, and other areas to offer up his opinions on government, economics, sociology, religion, and so on. His writing is also marred by pointless and foolish parenthetical asides, and corniness, as when in the space of three pages in the last chapter he refers six times to his wife as "my lovely" (e.g., "My lovely found what appeared..."). Other readers seem to enjoy Logsdon's self-proclaimed stance as "the contrary farmer," and I am certainly on the same side as he in the struggle against destructive agribusiness and the global hegemony of ruthless corporations, but (obviously) I cannot recommend this book, which is poorly written and seems not to have had the attention of an editor.
a bonanza of practical information.......1999-03-28
An exciting book, full of unusual ideas, practical information, and intriguing possibilities. Real treasure.
Hilarious, insightful, and brilliant.......1998-01-05
Gene Logsdon's thoughts on gardening are jewels of wisdom and humor, as usual. He's one of those rare writers who can take the reader deep into unimagined worlds under the surface of a topic, exploring whimsical and practical concepts of farming/gardening. Buy this book! You'll read it BR to tatters and beg for more. I'm giving copies to every gardener I know.

Customer Reviews:
Best undergrduate math refresher ever.......2007-10-07
Wish I had come across this book earlier. Other undergraduate math refresher/review books are either too basic or too formulaic (if I had wanted a table of functions I would have bought one). The stress is clearly on concepts, followed by techniques. The book is a great review of all the oohs and aahs of undergraduate and high school mathematics that you have forgotten over the years. I graduated from high school 15 years ago and by page 3 I was doing derivatives from first principles. Richard Courant's "What is Mathematics?" would make an excellent companion to this book. For example I complemented the first two chapters on calculus with the chapters on number systems and, limits and continuity from Courant's book and I truly felt that my calculus review was complete.
A really helpful book.......2007-04-04
This is a great book for someone who did his undergraduate studies in Engineering or Chemistry (like me) and now is entering a Physics program. It is a great review of most of the important stuff in Math for Physics, without the boring mathematical style: straight to the point with relevant examples.
Another good point is that it has problems scattered INSIDE the text, which enforce you to do them. Most of them are interesting and in a physical context (as: Lorentz transformations - as an example of a "rotation" matrix , Maxwell equations - an exercise in vector analysis etc.)
In addition, I don't agree with the reviewers who claim that you cannot actually LEARN new topics from it. I never learned "complex functions" during my undergrad, and actually managed to learn it with Shankar - at least the things important to a physicist.
A drawback: a chapter about group theory could be useful.
Kind of a last resort.......2005-02-06
This book tries to cover pretty much all the mathematical methods you'd need in college-level physics if you haven't had much experience with them before. The trouble is that that is a LOT of math, and trying to cover that in a book this size is just asking for trouble.
If you don't know any of this stuff, this book is going to kill you. It covers multivariable and vector calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, functions of a complex variable, etc. That is maybe 4-5 different math courses. The idea is that physicists don't really need the rigor of theoretical math, they just need to learn the "tools" so they can do the practical, applied stuff.
This book is good if you already have a general idea of these concepts and just want to get the important parts.
A Quick math methods book.......2001-06-19
.If you enjoyed Klepner & Ramsay 's "Quick Calculus" as a school student for its engaging and dearly wished there was an undergrad math methods book in that style! The answer is this book. You may not find a work book type fromat like "Quick calculus" . But let me assure you despite the formal style and Prof Shankar's repute for being verbose you will find it like a rhaphsody and yet in coherent english. I only dearly wish Prof Shankar would kill some research time to write a Graduate level fitness programme. I think all the previous reviewers justly awarded 5 stars to this book. To those raters responisble for eating half a star , let me say there is no other engaging lively and painless math review than this. If you find this book painful I don't know what to say . But on the contrary of you thought the book was too easy then read the title it is a fitness programme not a discourse like Morse & Feshbach or Courant & Hilbert.
An excellent math review for physics.......2000-04-08
This book covers the basic areas of math needed for physics. It is quite readable and useful for self-study. It covers the standard topics in a concise fashion, but in sufficient detail to be useful. I used it as a personal math refresher after being away from advanced physics for some years. It gave me what I needed.

Book Description
Encompassing all aspects of the structures of peptides and proteins, this book adopts a uniquely problem-oriented approach to the topic. Starting with a look at the structures and properties of the twenty amino acids that occur in proteins, and moving on to the synthesis of polypeptides and the isolation of proteins, Peptides and Proteins then addresses the methods of analysis of protein characteristics, including the modern methods of sequence analysis by mass spectrometry. Further chapters examine the three-dimensional nature of protein structure, and introduce the student to the use of computer applications (molecular graphics, databases, bioinformatics) in protein chemistry.
Original research data is used in many of the problems, and throughout sufficient background biology is included, thus putting the subject into context for chemists. Aimed at first and second-year chemistry students, this title will also be of interest to students of biochemistry.

Book Description
This unique book and computer disk package will help researchers, instructors, and students in pharmacy, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, or other biomedical sciences reach a deeper understanding of the more advanced chemical and physicochemical processes as they relate to drug action, drug discovery, and biomedical science in general. Mathematica software permits rapid numerical, symbolic, and graphic calculations that allow complex concepts to be displayed, animated, and discussed in the same document. In "Advanced Tutorials for the Biomedical Sciences," Mathematica is used as a tool to display, animate, and calculate various physical phenomena: No programming by the instructor or the reader is needed to activate these functions. The Tutorials are "interactive" in that the user not only enters but may also change the values of parameters within the code in order to better understand difficult concepts.
The computer disk will continue to serve the researcher as a computational "toolbox" for the common calculations needed to perform a variety of chromatographic and spectroscopic analyses. While the Mathematica software is needed to run the Tutorials, it can be applied to any number of additional mathematical or scientific applications.

Book Description
Statistical distributions are fundamental to statistical science and are a prime indispensable tool for its applications. This monograph is the first to examine an important but somewhat neglected area in this field univariate continuous distributions on a bounded domain, excluding the beta distribution. It provides an elementary but thorough discussion of "novel" contributions developed in recent years and some of their applications. It contains a comprehensive chapter on the triangular distribution as well as a chapter on earlier extensions of this distribution not emphasized in existing statistical literature. Special attention is given to estimation, in particular, non-standard maximum likelihood procedures.

Book Description
ACE OF ACES
The Life of Captain Eddie Rickenbacker
H. Paul Jeffers
Author of In the Roughrider’s Shadow
In this important new biography, acclaimed historian H. Paul Jeffers brings to vivid life one of the most daring and dramatic figures of twentieth century America–Medal of Honor recipient Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker. Born to immigrant parents with humble means at the turn of the century, Edward Rickenbacker was destined to embody the ingenuity, innovation, and courage that would make the United States a world power.
Rickenbacker burst onto the national scene as one of the nation’s first star race car drivers. In an era when tracks were rough and safety precautions virtually unknown, Rickenbacker pushed the fastest machines at terrifying speeds. Later in life, he would own the Indianapolis Speedway and help establish the sport of modern race car driving as we know it.
But Rickenbacker’s lasting fame came as an “Ace of Aces” in World War I, a fearless fighter pilot who would chase the “Flying Circus” of the legendary Red Baron above the battlefields of France. With his “Hat-in-the-Ring” squadron, Eddie was among the first to understand that the new technology of aviation would forever change the face of warfare. Shooting down twenty-six enemy planes in just seven months, he captured the hearts of a nation back home involved in its first Great War.
Even after the war, he remained a national figure as one of the founders of Eastern Airlines. Turning his wartime experience to peacetime industry, Rickenbacker again led American interests in reshaping the world. And in one of the most dramatic chapters of World War II, a plane on which Rickenbacker flew as a civilian crash-landed in the Pacific Ocean. He survived as a castaway for twenty-four days before a rescue that defied the odds.
Ace of Aces is the unparalleled story of a hero and the dramatic events that shaped our country and our history.
Customer Reviews:
Engaging and enjoyable........2007-08-03
This book is an engaging and human view of Eddie Rickenbacker. It includes a lot of personal information, and reveals his weaker side in some regards. The narrative moves well. It was a pleasant read and made me see Rickenbacker as a human being.
Book Description
In January 1996, a van speeding through a red light ended the life Kara Swanson had known. She suddenly joined the 2 million Americans who suffer brain injury each year. It was like being thrust into a foreign country with no map, no way to speak the language, no directions home.
"This is the book I wish I could have read when I was first diagnosed with a brain injury," Kara writes. I tried to take the information that it took me months and years to learn and put it into a short, easy-to-read book that would help survivors and their loved ones better understand the process of recovery."
Written with laugh-out-loud humor, candor, and technical input from medical and legal profesionals, "I'll Carry the Fork!" offers inspiration and practical help to anyone dealing with the aftermath of brain injury. Because as Kara says, "Sometimes when your life ends, you don't actually die."
Customer Reviews:
I'll Carry the Fork!.......2006-10-21
A great read for a survivor or family member of TBI. Slightly larger print and easy to follow story line. This book puts you in touch with the TRUELY important things in life. Showing some of possitive and humorious bumps in her new learning curve keeps this book from reading like a text book. Wow does it feel better knowing that others share similar experincies.
I have purchased several of these, one for my daughter, and a couple for friends to help them understand me now.
If you ever get the chance to meet Kara DO IT, she is uplifting to speak with.
I'll Carry the Fork! Recovering a Life After Brain Injury.......2006-03-03
A delightful book which takes the author from a tragedy and life change to making her new life the best it can be. A wonderful message for those of us having a family member who is a recent traumatic brain injury survivor. It is written with humor but with a valuable message. The chapters are short and written in a manner our TBI survivor is able to read and comprehend it. Thank you for this book.

Great for the family of a TBI victim.......2005-11-01
I never fully understood my dad's head injury, but after reading this humorous story of Kara it made me realize the frustrating effects of brain injury. Just a great book over-all and written on the level of a sixth grader, so it makes it an easy read.
No real medical details, just sentimental mush.......2005-07-15
A personal story of brain injury presented in a sentimental mushy story line. I too am dealing with my brain injury and the process of acceptance, understanding, coping, and movement toward a fulfilling, happy, and peaceful life. It is a difficult process. The author most certainly conveyed her story.
I found the book to be a shallow pep talk with no redeeming qualities. It lacked depth in articulation or any substance to medical fact or rehabilitation. If you are interested in a book with a survivors story that has meat to it read "Over my Head" by Claudia Osborn. I've read it five times and will read it many more times. My family and friends have praised the book for giving them an understanding that I could not communicate so precisely and eloquently. "Over my Head" is simply the best book coveying personal experience with brain injury that I have ever read.
