A Dyer's Garden touches on the history and nature of dye plants and walks you through a garden season from design to planting to harvesting for the dyepot.
Customer Reviews:
Great for anyone new to dyeing!.......2007-07-03
This was my first introduction to the world of dyeing with plants. The photography is terrific and gives you a good idea of what you'll get from each plant. Mordants are discussed, and the plants that are included are covered thoroughly for both cultivation and dye recipes. My only regret? That I can't find the seeds for the Japanese Indigo! I recommended this book to several people when we attended our local fiber festival.
Beautiful, well-organized guide to dye plants.......2007-04-10
This book focuses mainly on the home growing and use of dye plants. There is even a section devoted to the layout of the home dye garden. General mordanting and dye bath info is given at the beginning of the book. In the "Portfolio of Dye Plants" which follows, two pages are devoted to each dye plant. For each plant, 4-10 color photos illustrate the results obtained with various mordants on different fibers. The instructions for using different plants are not in traditional recipe form. Instead, Buchanan indicates how much plant material is generally required for a given amount of fiber ("flowers from 8 plants," etc). This fits in with Buchanan's emphasis on diversity of color over reproducibility, but it could be troublesome for users of purchased dyestuffs. In short, this book is nice to look at, easy to use, and appears to contain highly useful information for dyer/gardeners.
gave as a gift.......2006-03-14
the recipient was very happy, & is busy putting in beds of plants to do home dyeing of medieval faire clothing.
Woad-you like to grow your own dye plants? Read on.......2006-01-02
For those doing creative re-enactment (SCA, Renn faires), this is an essential reference for growing and using natural dye plants. The book includes plants to grow, plants NOT to grow (invasive species), and plants that pay off with dye materials in one season. The margins of the book are organized by color family, and there are lovely schematics on how to organize a dye-plant garden for production or for high-intensity cultivation with raised rows--or just a pretty border. There are some basics of plant dyeing, information on mordants (salts that change color or cause it to stick to fiber.) A small but potent book, probably a must for anyone doing authentic reproduction of antique fibers or for anyone who likes the idea of home-dyed fiber but with naturally-obtained materials. Great for home schooling. Highly recommended.
Great for re-enactors.......1999-10-27
I particularly recommend this book as a visual source for historical re-enactors.
Too often there are descriptions of what dye-plants were used to color garments, but, no examples of what those colors would look like. This book provides clear, vivid color photos on a whole range of dye-plants grown during pre-medieval, medieval, Colonial, and later times. Additionally, it shows the same dye used on different fibers, sometimes with different mordants (fixers). Fiber samples include linen, wool, silk, and cotton.
I recommend this book to people interested in making clothing from "modern" material...it gives them the best opprotunity possible to try to find close color-matches. Alternately, it provides solid information to dye cloth by hand.
Also, the low price can't be beat!

Facts not speculation.......2001-10-19
This text presents a realistic view of the role of statistics in the courtroom. While obviously intended to introduce statistics to attornies, it provides statisticians such as myself with a clearcut view of what works and what doesn't work in a courtroom setting. Recommended both for attornies who want to brush up or relearn their statistics to get the most out of a statistician, and statisticians who want to develop productive working relationships with attornies.
For a comprehensive review, see Technometrics for May 2002, p185.
A Little Disappointed.......2001-10-13
I was a little disappointed that the book did not elaborate a little more on the specific cases cited as examples. Most of the time it just indicates if a particular case either set a precedent or was a counter-example to a precendent, and then gives a footnote reference to legal documents. The book reads too much like a synopsis of a legal library. When statistics is discussed, it is an elementary exposition of basic concepts. What I wanted was lucid examples of how these basic concepts actually made a difference in legal cases. I did not get that from this book. This was the first book on statistics and law that I bought and read, so I don't know how to compare it to others. But I will select and try another to see if what I am looking for is out there.

The USS Wahoo's performance in sinking Japanese ships in the farthest reaches of the empire is legendary.
Customer Reviews:
Wahoo.......2007-09-27
Very intertaining for the WW II history buff. I read this one in about 5 days.
Wahoo: The Patrols of America's Most Famous WW2 Submarine.......2007-01-11
I found this book very informative with a lot of factual history of the Wahoo and it's famous crew. I read "The wake of the Wahoo" first then this book followed by "Clear The Bridge" written by Richard O'Kane. Anyone that has ever served on diesel submarines knows about famous Skippers such as Morton and O'Kane. I found this book very hard to put down and would recommend it to everyone interested in submarines.
Wahoo a detailed account of her WWII patrols.......2006-11-16
There are a lot of details presented on each target but I found that very boring after a while. The same thing over and over. The submarine Wahoo was a valuable item in the Navy's arsenal but I found so much detail to be a drag. I read about the first three patrols and then laid the book down for a long time before making the effort to finish the work.
I was disappointed because I was expecting another exciting recollection of the submarine warfare in WWII because I had recently read Thunder Below by Eugene B. Fluckey. That account of the USS Barb captured my attention. I read the whole book in three days. I just couldn't wait to pick it up and find out what was in store for the submarine whose logs were filled with creative and effective ways to attack the enemy and became a training tool for the submarine service. The Barb had many of the same torpedo failures as the Wahoo but ingenuity ruled and the most Navy's most decorated individual was a very effective submarine commander. Thunder Below is a wonderful reading experience for those interested in WWII exploits, especially of the submarine service.
Hard to Put Down.......2006-07-22
I got started reading WWII submarine books by reading the fictional, but based on actual experience "Run Silent, Run Deep." Since then, I've read just about every WWII U.S. fleet submarine book in print. This has always been one of my favorites.
O'kane has a very illustrative writing style. You'll feel like you're there when you are reading. Besides the fascinating "running and gunning" accounts, you'll also read anecdotal stories about crew life.
This is really a must read. If you liked "Run Silent, Run Deep," you'll like this true, non fictional account even better. Get the hardcover version, they did a nice job on it.
Worthy of 7 Stars .......2005-12-01
O'Kane fills this fantastic book with a great account of courage, leadership and seamanship. It is easy to get wrapped up in this as a "war book" since it goes to the top of the class. However, rather than repeat what other fine reviews have noted I would also expand the book to a classic on leadership.
O'Kane is onboard with legendary Skipper Mush Morton.
I run into a lot of people in business who complain about the challenge of motivating both their company personnel and their suppliers/customers. What greater motivational challenge than to take a group of young sailors on a 12,000 mile cruise, packed like sardines in a tube and surrounded by people attempting (far too often with success) kill you.
His and his fellow officer's leadership kept the boat on the offense, with the crew believing in the mission and their fellow sailors.
There's enough detail to get out a plotting board ( or at least arrange the cocktail almonds) to duplicate the seamanship involved in putting the submarine in the middle of enemy convoys on a dark night at the right place to fire at several targets.
I have a strong feeling that in today's society we tend to confuse heroism with victims. True heroes are those who understand the risks they are taking and yet continue their mission despite the risks. For O'Kane and the crew it is a story of functioning as true heroes for months on end.
UPDATE : This fall (2006) the Navy confirmed that the sunken submarine located recently in the Sea of Japan was in fact the Wahoo. After 50 years the final resting place of Morton and the crew has been located.

Book Description
"Recollections of an Occasional Attorney" is the perfect memoir offering a glimpse into life and the law. A satisfying mix of personal recollections and anecdotes, Iglehart's account of his upbringing is fascinating, complete with episodes of fox hunting, steeplechases, and yachting - images of a privileged life-style all but faded now from the American landscape. In the midst of his not-so-ordinary life, Francis N. Iglehart found time to dabble in law with some degree of success. Experiences such as introducing the first video deposition in Maryland legal history or having Melvin Belli, the legendary "King of Torts," serve as co-counsel on a case, provide noteworthy insight into the practice of law. Intelligently written, the stories not only run the gamut from tragedy to humor, they provide the reader with an insider's view of the court room and the legal system.

Offering the reader an opportunity to see the courtroom and trial cases from the inside.......2005-08-06
Recollections Of An Occasional Attorney is the wry and candid memoir of attorney Francis N. Iglehart, presenting his firsthand experience with the American legal system from the mid-1950's to the present day. Offering the reader an opportunity to see the courtroom and trial cases from the inside, Recollections Of An Occasional Attorney devotes one to a handful of pages to each individual remembered case, ranging from disputes about divorce or a slip and fall to the death of a child and school desegregation. A revealing and sometimes personal, often professional but always compelling glimpse behind the scenes of human attempts at justice.
Delightful in some respects, disappointing in others........2005-01-06
Francis N. Iglehart's book, Recollections of an Occasional Attorney, is partly an autobiography and partly a fascinating description of the life of a prominent person in Baltimore County, Maryland over a period of 75 years. It's as delightful in some respects as it is disappointing in others. Please let me explain.
As a former practicing attorney, I knew "Ike," although not well. Somewhat liberal in his views, he belonged, for a time, to one of two factions warring for political control in the County. In an area where Democrats outnumbered Republicans back then, it was natural that Ike would gravitate toward other Democrats and become associated with Democrat causes. I, being one of the outnumbered Republicans, did not travel in the same circles, but we'd sometimes see each other in the hallowed halls of the old Towson Courthouse, or at a local restaurant at midday, and nod the greeting of those who recognize each other as fellow members of the Bar. He'd been practicing for 13 years when I began in 1965. His reputation as a very good lawyer was already established.
Born into wealth, and raised at Ivy Hill in Greenspring Valley, perhaps the most upscale residential area in the County, Ike was clearly a member of the privileged class. His education was, as you might expect, the best. The schools he attended, Gilman, St. Paul's Preparatory School in Concord, New Hampshire, Princeton (after his Army service) and the University of Maryland Law School, were those to which the wealthy sent their children. Why not? His parents could afford the best. Don't all parents want the best for their kids?
Reading this book, I was struck by similarities between Ike's life and that of William F. (Bill) Buckley, Jr., recognized as the builder, if not the founder, of the conservative movement in America. Mr. Buckley, a prolific writer of many novels and a recent autobiography (Nearer, My God: An Autobiography of Faith. 1997), was born to wealthy parents, was raised in an upscale Connecticut home, and received the best education, including prep school and Ivy League university. Like Buckley in much except his politics, Iglehart was introduced to yachting at an early age, an interest that made a lasting impression and led, in later years, to racing and sailing on long cruises with family and friends, to exotic ports in the Caribbean and elsewhere. Both men have lived long, fascinating lives.
Which leads me to what I found disappointing about Ike's book. Granted the work is entertaining and will certainly hold the interest of any reader, especially one who, like me, is familiar with many of the people about whom Ike writes. Judges Haile, Jennifer, Menchine, Proctor, Raines and Turnbull, were fine judges and good, honorable men. Haile, Jennifer and Menchine often appointed me to represent indigents accused of crimes, back in the days before the Public Defender. I'm sure they did that for, or to Ike, as well, and as court-appointed work often became burdensome to a busy lawyer, I can remember eventually trying not to be seen as I sat in the back of their courtrooms waiting for my case to be called; a tactic that seldom worked.
The cases Ike selected to describe are gripping. They contain all the elements of the fascinating work to which good lawyers are exposed daily. Because of that, and because I'm a writer myself (The China Connection, 2003 and Little Sister Lost, 2004), I came away wishing that Ike had read Quentin Reynolds's Courtroom, Darrow's Verdicts out of Court, My Life in Court, by Louis Nizer, or Philip Friedman's Inadmissible Evidence or Reasonable Doubt, before venturing to write.
I found his descriptions of his cases too short and lacking in drama, leaving me, the reader, unsatisfied, wishing to learn more. Who, exactly, were his clients? How did they react to the legal scene unfolding around them? I also wanted more about his case preparation, including the investigatory stage, discovery process (interrogatories and depositions), motion hearings, jury selection, and of course, the trial. Often of interest is what became of a client after the case was concluded. But, perhaps the most important thing a reader wants to know is how he himself felt (not just what he did) as he represented these clients and handled their litigation.
True, Ike has the storyteller's gift, and his dry wit and humility come through clearly. But, he has not used these attributes well or often enough, preferring instead, brevity. He has a good command of the English language, though not Buckley's great literary powers. But who does?
Having said all that, I recommend the book, especially to those in Baltimore County, Maryland, who may know or have known those about whom the author has written. His friends and his large family will find the genealogy he has included as Chapter 1 interesting since it traces both paternal and maternal lines.
Rating it? I'll give it a 4 for holding my interest, while wishing that Ike had taken more time to learn the craft well or had hired the services of a ghost writer to help. Either could have transformed a good book into a great one.
