In the mid-1860s, after countless centuries of bearing the fruit that would become wine, French grapevines began to wither and die in ever increasing numbers and no one knew why. It started in southeastern France, in the Rhone Valley, as Christy Campbell tells the tale in his masterful The Botanist and the Vintner. Within 30 years the inexorable rolling disaster that was the phylloxera infestation had reached into every nook and cranny of France's wine making regions, destroying nearly all. Everywhere the wine grape grew--England, Spain, Italy, Germany, Eastern Europe, and even Australia--phylloxera appeared and took no prisoners. Except for American grape vines. The little bug didn't seem to have much taste for the skunky wines of native American grapes.
Christy Campbell, British journalist and, if The Botanist and the Vintner is any example, master storyteller, waltzes the reader into the middle of a fascinating tale of discovery and combat and never stops dancing. The book reads like a detective novel, a page-turner you can't put down. And it's about a bug, phylloxera, a root-sucking aphid that absolutely wiped clean the grand vineyards of France and thrived in defiance of both peasant remedy and all that "modern" science could bring to bear.
The modern science of the time, mind you, included debating Darwin's new theory of evolution. So it's really at the beginning of discovery and scientific technique. Despite a French government prize of 300,000 gold francs for a remedy, it took 30 years and more to pinpoint the reason for the vineyard die-off, and a practical way of defeating the organism. Grafting onto American rootstock - a rootstock that was the initial cause of the disaster - won the day though not the reward.
Campbell both begins and ends his tale in California's Napa Valley, where phylloxera once again raised its nasty little head toward the end of the 20th century, about 100 years after the struggle in France. It cost millions of dollars to bring the bug to bear. But this time part of the solution turned in a transgenic direction which is, of course, a threat with a completely different vintage. --Schuyler Ingle
Book Description
In the mid-1860s, grapevines in southeastern France inexplicably began to wither and die. Jules-Émile Planchon, a botanist from Montpellier, was sent to investigate. He discovered that the vine roots were covered in microscopic yellow insects. What they were and where they had come from was a mystery. The infestation advanced with the relentlessness of an invading army and within a few years had spread across Europe, from Portugal to the Crimea. The wine industry was on the brink of disaster. The French government offered a prize of three hundred thousand gold francs for a remedy. Planchon believed he had the answer and set out to prove it.
Gripping and intoxicating, The Botanist and the Vintner brings to life one of the most significant, though little-known, events in the history of wine.
Customer Reviews:
you don't have to be an enologist.......2007-08-20
How refreshing to read a book about wine history that is not totally layperson, but not textbooky. Fascinating read about the history of the relationship between European and American vines and indeed, how wine was saved for the world. Anyone interested at all in wine should read this book.
Phylloxera and The Botanist and the Vintner.......2007-05-07
This is a great book. Just be aware that its title in the rest of the world is "Phylloxera" - when you purchase a book from a "rest of the world" publisher, Amazon has a bad habit of recommending the same book under its US title.
Interesting story - poorly conveyed........2007-03-30
This is an extremely interesting biological and viticultural story. Unfortunately the history is poorly and haphazardly organized. Although Campbell strives to make the characters (scientists, viticulturists, and bureaucrats)three dimensional - his insistence on chronologically following the activities of multiple individuals comes at a high cost of understanding. The story would have been better told - I feel - by focusing on fewer players or including a more organized interspersion of biological context.
A plague on both your louses.......2006-11-29
Every wine-lover has at least a passing acquaintance
with the story of phylloxera, the tiny vine louse that
threatened the very existence of European vitis vinifera
grapes and the industry that's built on them.
Briefly, in the 1860's, vines imported from America as
horticultural curiosities brought with them an
unfestation of phylloxera to which the European vines
had no immunity. Phylloxera destroyed the roots of grape
vines and eventually the vines themselves died.
This is the story of the devastation of almost all
the vineyards of Europe that resulted from the louse.
More interestingly, it's also the story of:
* the scientific world coming to terms with the
implications of Darwinian theory and the consequences
of the scientific method. Early attempts to control
the pest included flooding, fumigatiing,cultivating
and sulfurating the vineyards. A partial success was
eventually achieved: vulnerable European vines were
grafted on to resistant American rootstocks. The plants
that almost killed European viticulture ended up being
its salvation.
* the social and economic disruption of a peasant world
that stretched from the Loire to Tuscany and Vienna.
Vast tracts of countryside were abandoned when profitable
grape growing was no longer possible. The depopulation
of the countryside was felt in European cities as well
as in the U.S., Canada and Argentina.
* the long-term implications for the world of wine. New
strains of phylloxera adapt to newly planted rootstocks
and a cycle of plague continues. Genetic modification
seems to be just around the corner. How will the French,
sternly against GM organisms respond to the next round
of threat. Will the struggle be not just social and
scientific, but also moral?
Stay tuned.

OK bordering on lousy.......2006-03-11
When I got this book I looked forward to an exciting, intriguing story based on the reviews I'd read. Unfortunately what I found was an unimpressive, somewhat disorganized telling of a great story. I found the writing to be rather boring and uninspired. The organization of the story was disappointing and I felt that the characters could have been more fully developed.
It would have been nice if the publishers had seen fit to place the photographs and drawings in the book accompanying the text. It also would have been nice to have had more maps in the book showing the spread of the phylloxera.
I love books on science and I love books on wine, so it isn't as if I was a mystery fan who was sucked into reading this book based on the hype. I was disappointed in the way the story was told, the way the information was organized and the lack of accompanying material to bring it all together. I give the book a thumbs up for the information in it and a thumbs down for the way it was written and presented.

Book Description
"Set Theory for Computing" provides a comprehensive account of set-oriented symbolic manipulation methods suitable for automated reasoning. Its main objective is twofold: 1) to provide a flexible formalization for a variety of set languages, and 2) to clarify the semantics of set constructs firmly established in modern specification languages and in the programming practice. Topics include: semantic unification, decision algorithms, modal logics, declarative programming, tableau-based proof techniques, and theory-based theorem proving. The style of presentation is self-contained, rigorous and accurate. Some familiarity with symbolic logic is helpful but not a requirement. This book is a useful resource for all advanced students, professionals, and researchers in computing sciences, artificial intelligence, automated reasoning, logic, and computational mathematics. It will serve to complement their intuitive understanding of set concepts with the ability to master them by symbolic and logically based algorithmic methods and deductive techniques.
Book Description
Acclaimed historian David Oshinsky's chronicling of the life of Senator Joe McCarthy has been called both "nuanced" and "masterful." In this new paperback edition Oshinsky presents us with a work heralded as the finest account available of Joe McCarthy's colorful career. With a storyteller's eye for the dramatic and presentation of fact, and insightful interpretation of human complexity, Oshinsky uncovers the layers of myth to show the true McCarthy. His book reveals the senator from his humble beginnings as a hardworking Irish farmer's son in Wisconsin to his glory days as the architect of America's Cold War crusade against domestic subversion; a man whose advice if heeded, some believe, might have halted the spread of Communism in Southeast Asia and beyond. A Conspiracy So Immense reveals the internal and external forces that launched McCarthy on this political career, carried him to national prominence, and finally triggered his decline and fall. More than the life of an intensly- even pathologically- ambitious man however, this book is a fascinating portrait of America in the grip of Cold War fear, anger, suspician, and betrayal. Complete with a new Foreword, A Conspiracy So Immense will continue to keep in the spotlight this historical figure-a man who worked so hard to prosecute "criminals" whose ideals work against that of his- for America.
Customer Reviews:
More about so-called "McCarthyism".......2006-08-17
I think the evidence is pretty clear at this point that McCarthy was right on target with his accusations. Its amazing to me that liberals still cling to this "McCarthyism" myth. It just didn't exist. There was no repression of ordinary Americans in the 50s. Didn't happen. Sure, some people in government lost their jobs. But they were communists who then got other jobs selling insureance or whatever. Its not like they were sent to the gulag or anything.
A Liberal TRIES to be fair.......2006-05-14
Oshinsky gives the most complete review of McCarthy's life of any historian. He tries to appraise McCarthy's controveries and does not take part in the vicious name calling of a Ricahrd Rovere. However he comes from a liberal perspective and to get a fair appraisal from a conservative historian - read Hermann's McCarthy.
Since Venona has been released Oshinshy should have rewritten this book and not reissued the book he wrote in 1982.The events of 9/11 can give us an analogy.
Imagine if a professor advised the state department that the Taliban was the best hope for Afghanistan and that bin Ladin was just an agrarian reformer. Imagine if military secrets as the H bomb was given to Iran and that key government officials belonged to Islamist groups. Imagine if a senator would look at the aspects of that ? Would he be called intolerate of other religions ?
Owen lattimore urged that Mao was an Agrarian reformer. Mao killed millions. Larrimore made millions of bucks on his 'brilliant" observations. Oshinsky shouldn't defend this man. Klaus Fuchs, Rosenbergs, Hall etc gave the bomb to Russia. Hiss helped shape our foreign policy and even gave Russia three votes in the General Assembly.
So balance is really needed. McCarthy was a patriotic man who used bad means to an end. But his enemies sometimes used worse methods as Oshinsky demonstrates in the Joseph Rauh case and Eisenhower's minions forging letters.
McCarthy was brought down by Roy Cohn wanting favorable treatment for a possible lover- David Schine but curiously Oshinsky does not update the book with Cohn's sexuality and this would be an important insight.
In short this was a brilliant book for 1982 but the newer revelations as Venona , Cohn etc demands an update for this book
Accurate Well Written Story of the Man and his Times........2006-01-25
A book of politics, and the craving for power that drives some people to do almost anything to get that power. The broad outlines of the story are well known. Joe McCarthy grandstanding in front of the microphones accusing all kinds of people of being communists. Never presenting any evidence he was able to ruin the lives of many Americans just to gain his own satisfaction.
Now reviled, these times really need to be viewed in the light of the times, and again now that we have learned more about those times. His accusations appear to have been unfounded. But this was the time of the Rosenberg executions. This was the time of the House UnAmerican Activities Commission (HUAC).
As we have learned since with the release of the Venona documents, the Rosenbergs were guilty (well there's some question about Ethel). The activities of HUAC harmed a lot of people, especially in Hollywood, but did it really make us safer? It also appears that there were a lot of communists in our Government. But there is no indication that McCarthy really knew that.
This is an accurate story of McCarthy's rapid rise, and his rapid fall.
Best book on the subject.......2005-11-10
Oshinsky lays out the McCarthy record in straight-forward, unbiased terms.
Joe McCarthy was a deeply disturbed individual, who, having stumbled into a Senate Seat, went asking his friends for a good campaign "hook" to get reelected. They suggested communism.
Over the next five years, McCarthy accused, literally, thousands of Americans of being Soviet agents. Not once did he produce evidence that any of those accused were, in fact, working on behalf of communism. He accused the leadership of the U.S. Army of communism because it insisted on drafting G. David Schine, "friend" of McCarthy's associate Roy Cohn. Anyone who publicly criticized what McCarthy was doing was accused as well. Anyone who so much as supported progressive causes was labled as unpatriotic. In 2005, does that sound familiar?
It was inevitable that the Republican noise machine would eventually try to rehabilitate the record of one of the most disgraceful persons in American history. For the real facts on this living nightmare of a man, read this book.
A Conspiracy So Immense...the World of Joe Mc Carthy.......2003-09-01
Shocking...bizarre...funny...sad! American politics at it's worst! Could hardly stop reading it until I was finished!

I like it!.......2004-01-03
It's got a good beat, and you can dance to it!!!
He's my kind of dermatologist!.......2001-10-02
Currently living with a medical student, I can truly attest that most of Dr. Drayer's book is 100% correct. If you think medical school is just like the brochure this is your reality check. This is the kind of medical book all patients should read to see that doctors are screwy humans just like them, not gods. Anyone who thought that this book was sub-par missed the entire point! I hope Dr. Drayer provides us with another look into his world soon.
A MUST-READ!.......2001-01-27
Just as you don't have to be a doctor to love "ER," you'll love Drayer's essays even if you've never been to medical school! Hilarious and insightful, these no-holds-barred accounts of life in the medical trenches give readers a realistic insiders view of medicine that none of the other sappy, ultra-PC, "I was so moved when I saw a baby being born" books do.
Like Woody Allen in scrubs, Drayer takes us on the kind of journey you love to watch, but are thankful that it's HIS experience, and not yours. (Although, med students will definitely recognize these experiences!) A book to check out!
A typical surgeon: everything but surgery is beneath him........2000-07-29
This author's bitter portrayal of everything medical save surgery is a bit irritating. As a current 4th year medical student this book reminded me of most people at the end of their clinical rotations: irritated by everything. His rantings are repetitive, tiring, and uncreative.
Great Book.......2000-03-24
Funny book... an easy read, really enjoyed the interactions with patients. Waiting for his next book!
