Book Description
When Difficult Relatives Happen to Good PeopleFor every holiday, wedding, funeral, or birth of a child, families gather for what are supposed to be times of celebration or remembrance. But often these gatherings create more stress and conflict than joy and connection. When Difficult Relatives Happen to Good People speaks to those who look forward to family gatherings but also dream being around certain relatives. The opinionated aging parent, the bigoted uncle, the brother who drinks too much, the cousin who flaunts her money and status--all of these characters appear in the sometimes humorous but always instructive stories throughout this book. Based on years of researching family conflict, Dr. Felder offers practical advice about how to make the most of your heartfelt connections with the family members you love while staying clear of the toxic ones. Full of specific recommendations for every kind of family situation, from religious disagreements and sibling rivalries to drug, alcohol, and gambling problems, When Difficult Relatives Happen to Good People describes with witty, inspiring examples how to identify when to step in and when to step back, how to avoid feeling like a martyr, and how to stay relaxed in situations that once would have made you cringe.Customer Reviews:

Keeping Good Time: Reflections on Knowledge, Power, and People
Avery Gordon , and Leon Golub Manufacturer: Paradigm Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1594510156 |
Book Description
Avery Gordon's first book, Ghostly Matters, was widely acclaimed as a work of striking sociological imagination and social theory. Keeping Good Time, her much anticipated second book, brings together essays by Gordon that were 'written to be read aloud'. Her eloquent voice in this book further establishes her place among literary sociological writers of a new generation. Keeping Good Time explores the meaning of being a politically engaged scholar during deeply troubled times. The book's essays consider the role of education during war time, the costs of imprisonment and repression, the power of utopianism in an age of globalization, the complexities of gendered racism, the politics of culture, and the practice of theory as it emerges from everyday life.

Keeping Good People.......1999-06-18
By: Carol Celeste
Employee turnover leads to low staff morale and increased costs, which can dull any company's edge in the competitive market. Roger Herman, a management consultant who specializes in workplace stability, expects turnover to increase in the next decade. An employee spends an average of five years with one firm, reports show. Herman expects that number to shrink. Along with a scarcity of experienced workers, high turnover indicates problems ahead for many companies.
"The economy is strong, technology is expanding our capacity, global markets beckon, but we don't have enough qualified people to get the work done," writes Herman in Keeping Good People.
Unless business leaders hold on to their "good" employees, disaster awaits, warns the author. Good people must be retained if a business is to remain competitive in the marketplace in the next decade and beyond.
Based on his research as an outside consultant, Herman discovered that people change jobs for five principal reasons. Interestingly, money falls at the bottom of the list.
Today's strong economy, low unemployment, and shortage of experienced workers, makes it easier that ever for talented employees to find what they're looking for elsewhere. What employers must do to prevent turnover among their most treasured employees, is treat them psychological as well as their financial needs. Keeping good staff members on the payroll needs to be company strategy, the author says.
Keeping Good People is a collection of strategies that infuse all business functions. Herman separates these strategies into five groups dealing with five main motivations for changing jobs: environmental, relationship, support, growth and compensation. Each group merits a chapter demonstrating a total of close to 200 strategies that uncover and address the factors that repel good employees. Most strategies deal with communications and social issues, but creative compensations receives attention.
This book is really a handbook on employee retention for company leaders and all layers of management . In order to satisfy the needs of good workers, the entire leadership team must support and implement the strategic actions mentioned in the book.
One tactic for showing workers their value is to dismiss any workers who don't perform to standard as soon as their deficiencies become apparent. "To hold you good people, sometimes you have to remove the bad ones surgically," counsels Herman.
Before getting to specifics, Herman explains his view of good employees' wants, complaints and appeasements. He defines "good people" as those with strong capabilities who use their skills to achieve quality results. These are people you count on to get the job done regardless of conditions and who will have a negative effect on your business if they leave.
But before retention strategies can work, business owners have to hire the kind of employees that they want to keep around. Herman addresses ways to create the type of company image that will attract good workers.
He sums up the message of the book like this: "strive to retain each individual-independently, one-on-one...People typically don't leave or stay with an organization in groups: it's an individual decision." So don't wait until the entire workforce consists of the prime staffers you covet to work at keeping the good ones.
Keeping Good People covers everything from the physical environment of the workplace to the degree of autonomy employees are allowed to recognition for routine as will as extraordinary acts. Employees should be viewed as assets as essential to successful of operation as manufacturing equipment and funding, rather than the customary resources, which can be replace by picking others from the large pool of available workers.
The pool of good workers is no longer large and the few good ones remaining have many choices, which makes "workforce stability a strategic issue." The need for advance planning to keep your good employees is the theme of this book, and implementing the plan takes a major commitment from all those who supervise.
The lessons in behavior modification for leaders and their staffs are worth learning, more so for businesses that experience significant employee turnover.
