5 out of 5 stars A Book to Study and USE!.......2002-05-12

In today's job market, it is challenging to attract the best-qualified and well-suited job applicants. It is even more difficult to retain excellent employees. The cost of employee turnover is high in terms of lost productivity, lost knowledge, and financial expense associated with filling the vacancy.

Roger Herman, futurist and certified management consultant and speaker, provides an exceptional resource for any organization seeking to retain its best employees. Keep Good People is divided into three sections. The first effectively sets the stage by providing valuable insights into the competitive nature of the job market, the value of good employees, and what prompts employees to stay and leave an employer. The first section provides essential background that led to an essential, yet basic understanding of employer/employee relations regarding retention. Section two provides nearly 200 very specific and useful strategies. Each strategy is clearly defined and concisely explained. Herman does not stop with a somewhat overwhelming list of strategies, yet provides suggestions for implementation and an "eye to the future" in section three.

Keep Good People is an excellent resource for human resource professionals and managers seeking to prevent undesirable employee turnover as well for the organizations seeking to reduce turnover. Use this book as a guide to simply review current practices and development of strategic, and it will be well worth the investment of both time and money.

Commonsense, practical advice about what employers can do to enhance the longevity of their workforce and halt the drain and the expense of 'revolving door' recruiting and hiring.

Find out the top 5 real reasons why people leave their jobs (and it isn't for more money!).

This book is invaluable and a 'must have' for everyone responsible for recruiting, hiring, and hanging on to, good people!

5 out of 5 stars Great Opportunity to Build Your Team!.......2001-01-03

My secretary Neicy, picked up my copy of "Keeping Good People" while I was out of the office. When I returned, she mentioned that she thought a certain strategy would help me and our business. And she was right! Full of "one page strategies," this book provides some terrific team conversation. Pick a strategy, read it and then discuss its implications on your team and how the team works together. Some random examples: Strategy 1.17 Promote a healthy working environment. Strategy 2.27 Be accessible. Strategy 3.35 Fight Boredom. Strategy 4.15 Provide incentives for for growth. Strategy 5.15 Give Away Lottery Tickets. Our team decided to discuss one of these strategies each time we meet (usually at "tea time" held at 3pm each day). While some of the strategies may not apply, it does create a space for great conversation. When given the opportunity, team members or "employees" will reinforce what's working well and tell you what they need to be successful.

    5 out of 5 stars A helpful book on a critical area.......2000-09-23

Roger Herman gives us an excellent reference and guide to an important area of profitability for business. Keeping people is every bit as important as finding them in the first place. The techniques set forth in this book will benefit the employer and the employee as well. It is well organized and to the point, especially in areas of making the employee part of the overall team.

    5 out of 5 stars A great book!.......2000-04-11

Finding, attracting and hiring new employees can be one of the most important investments employers can make. If don't hire good people, you'll have to continue recruitment at a high level -- a costly proposition. This book serves as a great guide and serves as a tremendous tool for employers and human resource staff.

    Book Description

When Difficult Relatives Happen to Good PeopleFor every holiday, wedding, funeral, or birth of a child, families gather for what are supposed to be times of celebration or remembrance. But often these gatherings create more stress and conflict than joy and connection. When Difficult Relatives Happen to Good People speaks to those who look forward to family gatherings but also dream being around certain relatives. The opinionated aging parent, the bigoted uncle, the brother who drinks too much, the cousin who flaunts her money and status--all of these characters appear in the sometimes humorous but always instructive stories throughout this book. Based on years of researching family conflict, Dr. Felder offers practical advice about how to make the most of your heartfelt connections with the family members you love while staying clear of the toxic ones. Full of specific recommendations for every kind of family situation, from religious disagreements and sibling rivalries to drug, alcohol, and gambling problems, When Difficult Relatives Happen to Good People describes with witty, inspiring examples how to identify when to step in and when to step back, how to avoid feeling like a martyr, and how to stay relaxed in situations that once would have made you cringe.

    5 out of 5 stars Good Advice!.......2007-05-13

I found this book very helpful and inspirational. Definitely a must read for people who are having problems with relatives and don't know how to handle an issue! You may even want to read it if there are currently no issues in your family! It's good to know what you could potentially deal with.

    3 out of 5 stars Ok.......2007-03-19

I liked that it gave advice on how to handle some of the situations, but it didn't give useful advice on most issues. It mainly tells you how to handle it in your head, but not how to communicate with these relatives when they are pushing your buttons.

    3 out of 5 stars SOMEWHAT HELPFUL.......2007-03-10

My personal opinion of the book is that I was a little disappointed. I was looking for a revelation or a solution. I did get a few ideas and tactics for coping with those who continue to impose themselves on you. However, if those don't work you wind up compromising yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Finally!! Practical advice I can use.......2003-11-28

I loved this book. I grew tired of books that provided alot of, exuse me, psycho babble which didn't help me deal w/relatives that drive me nuts or truly hurt me and I find impossible to be around.

Dr. Felder's book provided insight into what I can do that is practical, and I feel even more importantly, urged me to understand that changing my mean grandmother wasn't going to happen.. the only thing I could do was change how I let myself react.

      Book Description

Avery Gordon's first book, Ghostly Matters, was widely acclaimed as a work of striking sociological imagination and social theory. Keeping Good Time, her much anticipated second book, brings together essays by Gordon that were 'written to be read aloud'. Her eloquent voice in this book further establishes her place among literary sociological writers of a new generation. Keeping Good Time explores the meaning of being a politically engaged scholar during deeply troubled times. The book's essays consider the role of education during war time, the costs of imprisonment and repression, the power of utopianism in an age of globalization, the complexities of gendered racism, the politics of culture, and the practice of theory as it emerges from everyday life.

Keeping Good People: Strategies for Solving the #1 Problem Facing Businesses Today By Roger E. Herman 389 pages

            By: Carol Celeste

Employee turnover leads to low staff morale and increased costs, which can dull any company's edge in the competitive market. Roger Herman, a management consultant who specializes in workplace stability, expects turnover to increase in the next decade. An employee spends an average of five years with one firm, reports show. Herman expects that number to shrink. Along with a scarcity of experienced workers, high turnover indicates problems ahead for many companies.

"The economy is strong, technology is expanding our capacity, global markets beckon, but we don't have enough qualified people to get the work done," writes Herman in Keeping Good People.

Unless business leaders hold on to their "good" employees, disaster awaits, warns the author. Good people must be retained if a business is to remain competitive in the marketplace in the next decade and beyond.

Based on his research as an outside consultant, Herman discovered that people change jobs for five principal reasons. Interestingly, money falls at the bottom of the list.

Today's strong economy, low unemployment, and shortage of experienced workers, makes it easier that ever for talented employees to find what they're looking for elsewhere. What employers must do to prevent turnover among their most treasured employees, is treat them psychological as well as their financial needs. Keeping good staff members on the payroll needs to be company strategy, the author says.

Keeping Good People is a collection of strategies that infuse all business functions. Herman separates these strategies into five groups dealing with five main motivations for changing jobs: environmental, relationship, support, growth and compensation. Each group merits a chapter demonstrating a total of close to 200 strategies that uncover and address the factors that repel good employees. Most strategies deal with communications and social issues, but creative compensations receives attention.

This book is really a handbook on employee retention for company leaders and all layers of management . In order to satisfy the needs of good workers, the entire leadership team must support and implement the strategic actions mentioned in the book.

One tactic for showing workers their value is to dismiss any workers who don't perform to standard as soon as their deficiencies become apparent. "To hold you good people, sometimes you have to remove the bad ones surgically," counsels Herman.

Before getting to specifics, Herman explains his view of good employees' wants, complaints and appeasements. He defines "good people" as those with strong capabilities who use their skills to achieve quality results. These are people you count on to get the job done regardless of conditions and who will have a negative effect on your business if they leave.

But before retention strategies can work, business owners have to hire the kind of employees that they want to keep around. Herman addresses ways to create the type of company image that will attract good workers.

He sums up the message of the book like this: "strive to retain each individual-independently, one-on-one...People typically don't leave or stay with an organization in groups: it's an individual decision." So don't wait until the entire workforce consists of the prime staffers you covet to work at keeping the good ones.

Keeping Good People covers everything from the physical environment of the workplace to the degree of autonomy employees are allowed to recognition for routine as will as extraordinary acts. Employees should be viewed as assets as essential to successful of operation as manufacturing equipment and funding, rather than the customary resources, which can be replace by picking others from the large pool of available workers.

The pool of good workers is no longer large and the few good ones remaining have many choices, which makes "workforce stability a strategic issue." The need for advance planning to keep your good employees is the theme of this book, and implementing the plan takes a major commitment from all those who supervise.

The lessons in behavior modification for leaders and their staffs are worth learning, more so for businesses that experience significant employee turnover.

This book works great and spells everything out very easily. Not the most comprehensive I am sure but I actually learned alot from it. I was mostly interested in chicken and sheep as well as ducks and geese. great book for a beginner like myself.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book, on various farm animals.......2007-08-08

This book is a wealth of knowledge! I own lots of books on raising ducks and chickens, and I have to say this book matches up well with all of my other books. Why is this impressive? Because the other books I'm comparing this book to are books that deal with only one type of animal (ducks, geese, chickens, exc). This book gives almost the same amount of detail as my other books plus it covers: Chickens, Ducks, Geese, Rabbits, Sheep, and Cattle. If your going to raise three or more different forms of live stock as a hobby, this is the only book you will need. If your going to try your hand at commercial production than you will need other books to supplement this book. I gave this 4 stars because the chicken and duck sections were not quite a thorough as some of my other books I own (though it came amazingly close). Have read lots of books in trying to get spun up on hobby farm life, and this by far takes the cake as number one animal 101. It is well presented, covers all the facts and includes diagrams and discriptions. Will recommend to others as first resource to start with.

4 out of 5 stars it is what the title says!.......2007-07-05

if you've just moved somewhere with a little land and are thinking of adding a few farm-type animals to your yard, this is a great book. It will tell you the demands that each of these little furry/fluffy/downy creatures will make on you, your property, and your bank account! The author gives a great overview of each of the animals mentioned in the title. BUT once you actually purchase the critters, you'll probably need a book that gives more in-depth information, especially in the health area. A great book to help you make educated decisions about what to toss in your ark!!

                      Book Description

This is a new edition of a very successful introduction to statistical methods for general insurance practitioners. No prior statistical knowledge is assumed, and the mathematical level required is approximately equivalent to school mathematics. While the book is primarily introductory, the authors discuss some more advanced topics, including simulation, calculation of risk premiums, credibility theory, estimation of outstanding claim provisions and risk theory. All topics are illustrated by examples drawn from general insurance, and references for further reading are given. Solutions to most of the exercises are included. For the new edition, the opportunity has been taken to make minor improvements and corrections throughout the text, to rewrite some sections to improve clarity, and to update the examples and references. A new section dealing with estimation has also been added.

                      Book Description

In this second volume of her autobiography, Kaye returns to India and resurrects a way of life that has long since passed into history. It is 1927 and, after studying in England, nineteen-year-old Mollie Kaye is reunited with India, the country where she spent her early years. As an awkward girl with a vivacious and intrepid mother, Kaye seeks comfort in her Indian friends, her sister and father, her talent for watercolors, and her ongoing love affair with India itself. She vividly recreates all the richness of the Raj, the complex ceremonies of high-caste Indian life, and the beauty of a Kashmir spring. As she has in such novels as THE FAR PAVILIONS, she lovingly brings to life the people and glorious terrain of the India she knew so well.

"No one is better at recalling that lost time before the Second World War...evocative, sumptuous and addictive. (amazon.com)

What a terrific book--nostalgic, romantic, funnny, poignant. I was utterly charmed once again by Ms. Kaye's writing. Her descriptions of visits to the Taj Mahal and spring in Kashmir are beautiful. I can't wait to read "Enchanted Evening."

This book is thoroughly enjoyable, with M. M. Kaye describing her idlyic days in India in a wonderfully interesting, humorous way, which makes this book a pleasure to read and a must own!

                      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2000-05-28

Ms. Kaye has the most wonderful way of describing scenes, colors, and events of an era never to be seen again. Her family led a story-book life of adventure and she makes it look so easy to overcome the forces of nature that were part of living there with very few, if any, modern conveniences. It was a delicious read and I hope Ms. Kaye is busily at work on the next book of her travels in China! I am grateful for this journey back into a gentler, quieter time.

5 out of 5 stars An evocative memoir of a time lost long ago.......1998-12-19

At long last, the sequel to Sun in the Morning -- and as always, M.M. Kaye's writing is evocative, sumptuous, and addictive. (The Far Pavilions is one of the two books I always travel with -- the other is Gone With the Wind -- because I can start reading anywhere and become totally immersed, no matter how many times I've read it.) No one is better at evoking that time-lost period before the Second World War; the details are not only fascinating but reveal to us moderns what the world once was like (which in British India in many cases seems rather closely to resemble E.F. Benson's town of Tilling...). Since I owe not only my interest in, but my several-hundred-volume library on, India to reading The Far Pavilions, I must admit a certain partiality here -- and a burning desire to read the sequel to Golden Afternoon.

                      Book Description

Eagle with a Badge is the true story of pilot Paul Creech, who flew state police helicopters and other aircraft for thirty years, preceded by ten years as a highway patrolman. It was a life of extreme danger, with times of stark terror, interspersed with the routine that all police officers know. By day, by night, in weather ranging from floods and tornadoes to snowstorms, Paul rescued people, and helped ground officers apprehend bank robbers, murderers, and escaping convicts. He provided dangerous, low-level air support in siege situations and drug raids, often acting as the “eyes” of officers on the ground. He was shot at often. His precision flying—in fact, his very survival—was calculated in seconds, inches, visibility, timing, and depended upon calm nerves and a steady hand on the controls. Creech and his wife live on a farm in East Texas. Lawler is editor of Texas State Trooper and lives in Austin.

5 out of 5 stars A must read - character, intrigue and adventure.......2002-05-12

Eagle with a Badge, a Texas size compilation of life experiences by a living action hero. The cavalry arrives and most of the time saves the day, so if you enjoy Clancy's Jack Ryan or Cussler's Dirk Pitt this is a must read. This book provides insight into the often hidden and rarely discussed struggle between the dark side of life and the forces of good from the real perspective of one who was there. A man of humble origins becomes an authentic modern day hero using technology of today and his impeccable character of yesterday. Truly a remarkable true life adventure.

Because I live with two pilots, I was very impressed with the descriptions of the flying involved! When I read about incidents in areas that I am familiar with I felt just like I was in the helicopter with the crew! I would recommend this to anyone interested in flying!

5 out of 5 stars At last--a book that includes Aviation and Law Enforcement.......2001-07-24

I was excited to receive a copy of this book from my wife and after starting it, could not put it down. I have been a private pilot for many years, and have worked in the Criminal Justice system for over 30. While I have many books on both subjects, this was the 1st I have seen that combines both. Paul does what I believe to be an outstanding job of addressing the topics in a manner that holds the interest of a large cross section of backgrounds. He gives enough information for non-pilots to understand the problems associated with the operations, yet does not bore experienced pilots with elementary detail. It is obvious the book is written by a veteran Law Enforcement officer as it provides an insight that captures the emotional impressions of adrenaline enhanced operations involved in this field that are experience by all officers, but is artfully done in a manner I have never read before. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in aviation, in law enforcement, or both.

Paul Creech has done a masterful job of placing the reader in the cockpit of his vehicle. You feel the wind, hear the sounds and see what is happening below. You experience the feelings associated with a sucessful mission. You feel the pride of the author as he goes about his daliy responsibilities as a DPS officer. You come away wioth a great feeling for "family." This is an excellent book.
