Good specifics on pasture.......2006-07-29

I liked Logsdon't specifics on the effects of different kinds of pasture. I think he misses an important opportunity with his unstructured grazing--See Joel Salatin's Salad Bar Beef for balance. The intense management of grazing (Salatin) makes a more sanitary environment and eliminates the need for antibiotics. Salatin is indifferent to the choices of grass variety on which Logsdon devotes so much time. The two authors provide complementary perspectives, including different details. Logsdon discusses fencing in some detail--I share his reluctance to depend on electric fence for boundaries-Salatin dismisses it and goes all electric. Both authors are persuasive advocates for grass fed beef.

I found this book to be well writtten and thought out. It is full of interesting ideas some of which I will be trying myself.

A pleasant surpise!.......2006-02-21

I picked up this book along with a half dozen or so others on small farms, pasture farming, and hobby farms. My intention is to turn 10 or so acres into semi-self reliant, possibly profitable (10 cents more than it cost would be acceptable), low maintenance farm.

What I expected was a book on what grass to plant on X acres, Y numbers of paddocks needed, Z livestock it would support, and how often to move the livestock from one paddock to the next.

What I recieved was wisdom, experience, humor, history, and practical instructions all neatly put together. It gave me a lot of great ideas on what to do for a small farm to make pasture/rotation grazing work.

It covers all the different types of livestock (Cows -Dairy and Meat, Sheep, Goats, Pigs, Chickens), fencing, farm chores, planting, and has chapters dedicated to the grasses, legumes, and grains that are of value to pasture farming.

Mixed in is much humor, practical tips, philosophical ideas on america, and much more.

I was was sorry when I finished the book, and that is saying a lot when you remember that this is a farming book!

It was a pleasure to read. I added three more of Mr. Logsdon's books to my reading list just so I could read some more of his finely written experiences during a lifetime of farming.

This book is a virtual encyclopedia of curves and functions, and depicts nearly all of the standard mathematical functions rendered using the software package Mathematica. Along with lots of examples, historical notes, and citations, this expanded second edition features four new chapters: Green's Functions, Regular Surfaces, Irregular and Miscellaneous Surfaces, and Minimal Surfaces. It includes coverage on Riemann's continuous but nowhere differentiable function. The book also updates the Mathematica code, called "notebooks," to the latest version (5.0), which allows much more detailed illustrations, and makes these notebooks available on an enclosed CD-ROM, usable on any platform, so that you can easily render and manipulate the functions presented in the book. The book does not provide a tutorial on Mathematica, nor does it delve deeply into the pure mathematics of it all, so you should already be familiar with both. Chapter one is the closest thing to a tutorial in the book. The rest of the chapters read more like a catalog. A New Edition After 14 Years.......2007-01-18

In the 14 years since the previous edition of this book was published:

Mathematica has matured, expanded and improved tremendously The power of the desktop PC has increased many-fold in both processing speed and in memory capacity Several useful but complex curves and surfaces were deliberately left out of the earlier edition because of the first two points.

Taken together, this has almost required this offering of a new edition. Virtually every chapter has been re-written. Even the older curves and surfaces have been re-coded to take advantages of new capabilities within Mathematica. Several new chapters have been writteh to cover:

Knots and Links added to 3-D curves

I saw the documentary of Fr Vincent Capadano and tears came from my eyes. Something that never or rarely happens in my life. I now have to re read the book again.

Humbling and Inspiring.......2007-04-25

What a hero! What a priest! What a man! Fr. Capodanno was my idea of 'faith in action.' This is not a book about war, rather a book about peace. The peace you can only find in your own faith in God. Only a very few pages actually dealt with war. As a military and history buff, I found this work to be extremely inspiring. My faith in mankind has been renewed.

What a great book! I had not heard of Father Capodanno until I found this book. It is a well-written biography of Fr. Capodanno including his family life, his call to the priesthood, his time as a Maryknoll missionary in Taiwan and his military career. Also included is information about the beginning of the Maryknoll's which I found very interesting. This is not a book that will collect dust. Once you start reading it, you'll want to finish it.

I was so moved by Fr. Capodanno's story, I found myself picturing Jesus moving around the battlefield ministering to the injured and dying. Fr. Capodanno truly was Alter Christus (Another Christ) as all priests are called to be.

Vietnam Veterans, those serving in uniform today, and all Catholics will appreciate this story of a remarkable chaplain serving along side his Marines under the most difficult of circumstances. This is an inspiring story of faith, courage, and sacrifice. Highly recommended!

Sacrifice and true Heroism.......2007-01-07

I am the daughter of a United States Marine so I am well aware of the love Marines have for their Corpsmen and Chaplains. These are the only non-Marines who are given the honor of wearing ALL Marine Corps uniforms and insignia with the exception of the famed Marine Corps Dress Blues.

I have heard the story of Fr. Vincent Capodanno for several years and finally bought the book "The Grunt Padre." If one truly wants to know what a HERO is and the love that binds combat Marines with their Corpsmen and Chaplains, buy this book. You will not regret it although I can guarantee you will shed tears.

Fr. Capodanno or Fr. Vinny as Marines called him, had the heart of a Marine. He lived for them through his love of God and his desire to serve. I am totally in awe of this great man and with all my heart I pray he is soon elevated to Sainthood. Then, not only will his Grunt Marines have their own Patron Saint for combat, but also the world will know of Fr. Vinny's sacrifice and desire to help.

There's a famous quote attributed to many that asks the poignant question "Where do we get such men?" We get them from the small towns of America. We get them from the large cities of America. We get them from all walks of life in America. And we get them from our own homes in America. We, in America, are so truly blessed to have such an abundance of these heroes.

Buy this book! You may just finish it with a better understanding of true heroes, but hopefully you will feel a tug at your heart strings for realizing we live among so many incredible citizens.

Thank you, Fr. Mode for researching and writing about Fr. Vinny - a man Marines already knew to be a hero.

This is a very well written book about Father Vincent Capodanno, Maryknoll Missionary who spent 6 years in Taiwan, then was Commissioned as a US Navy Chaplain and was assigned to the 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division based in Da Nang,Vietnam. Fr Capodanno made it a point to be with his Marines in their forward areas as much as possible. He was their Priest,friend, confidante,and bore the hardships right alongside of them in their various Operations. Lt Capodanno served three battalions,1-3 of the 7th Marines and even when he was taken off line duty for a few months and was assigned to a Hospital Ship, he found time to chopper to his Marines in the field whenever he could. On the battlefield and off, he truly tried to Radiate Christ and was an inspiration to many. He saved many Marine's souls at the moment of death by his courage under fire,on the battlefield and in the first aid stations and medevac areas. He had extended his tour because he did not want to leave his Marines. In doing so, he eventually met his own demise on the battlefield while administering the last rites to some of the wounded Marines. He was a unique person who affected nearly all who ever met him with his calm, peaceful manner and his coolness under fire. For his bravery under fire he was awarded the Navy Bronze Star. and the Purple Heart and the Medal of Honor (both awarded posthumously) and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star. Father Capodanno died on the battlefield on 4 September 1967 in Quang Tin Province, Vietnam. The book also gives a few details about the U.S. Military's Chaplains Service, and mentions several prominent Military Vicars such as Cardinal Spellman and (later) Cardinal John J O'Connor. Father died a true missionary's death: in the field with his own, having suffered Martyrdom for the sake of bringing Christ to others. He was a saintly man and an inspiration to many.
