                        Book Description

Declared a triumph by the New York Times Book Review, Linda Greenlaws first book, The Hungry Ocean, appeared on nearly every major bestseller list in the country. Now, taking a break from the swordfishing career that earned her a major role in The Perfect Storm, Greenlaw returns to Isle au Hauta tiny Maine island with a population of 70 year-round residents, 30 of whom are Greenlaws relatives. With a Clancy-esque talent for fascinating technical detail and a Keillor-esque eye for the drama of small-town life, Greenlaw offers her take on everything from rediscovering home, love, and family to island characters and the best way to cook and serve a lobster. But Greenlaw also explores the islands darker side, including a tragic boating accident and a century-old conflict with a neighboring community. Throughout, Greenlaw maintains the straight-shooting, funny, and slightly scrappy style that has won her so many fans, and proves once again that fishermen are still the best storytellers around.

                        Download Description

In THE LOBSTER CHRONICLES, Linda Greenlaw returns from her years of adventure to Isle au Haut, the island that has been the Greenlaw home for five generations. There are only 70 year-round residents on the island, 10 of whom are Greenlaws. In describing her first year as a lobsterman, the author explores themes of love, family, and the pursuit of a simpler life. In particular, she discusses working with her father, who is her helmsman, and their relationship - what they learn about lobstering and each other. The book contains many vivid, and sometimes hilarious, stories of life on Isle au Haut and the characters who live there. THE LOBSTER CHRONICLES also describes the ongoing battle between Isle au Haut lobstermen and the Stonington lobstermen. This is the war that is referred to in the title, and it is this conflict that provides a narrative arc for the book. The book integrates material on topics ranging from the secret ingredient in Linda's mother's lobster casserole recipe to island lore. In addition to these kinds of lighter items, THE LOBSTER CHRONICLES includes a harrowing section on three young island residents killed in a boating accident. As in THE HUNGRY OCEAN, Linda Greenlaw displays Tom Clancy's genius for describing equipment, Jimmy Breslin's flair for a yarn, and a wonderfully real voice, sometimes contemplative, often cranky, always all her own.

                        5 out of 5 stars Very fun!.......2007-01-04

I laughed alot! Anyone who has ever lived in a small town will relate to this book. If not you will wish you lived in a small town just for the comedy of it! Linda is a good writer. If you have red any of her other books you already know this! I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Life Among the Boredom and the Chowder..........2006-12-17

I bought and read this book because my Grandfather, Asbury Arthur [Bob] Gray, was borned in Stonington, Maine; just behind the Opera house on Highland Avenue. His Aunt Millie's stove is still on displayed in the General Store and when I walked through the town for the very first time back in 2001, there were people who looked strangely like my Grandfather all over the place. He was a dear old man, with terrific story telling capabilities, many about the sea since he, like Linda Greenlaw, come from a long line of fishermen. There were tales of exploration, and of terror (like the Great Storm of 1873 where his Grandfather, James H Gray, and the crew of the DH Webb survived by hiding out in the Bay of Chaluer, off the coast of the Prince Edward Islands), and of family (although he lost his mother when he was only 10 and was forced to move to Bath and work in the Iron Works because his Dad and his two brothers were at sea). This book is every bit as good as a conversation with Grandpa Gray, the humor and the charm shines right on through. So does the boredom and the chowder... Thank you Linda for letting us share your little island and your great big hospitality! I enjoyed it immensely.

3 out of 5 stars The Lobster Chronicles.......2006-10-06

This book chronicles the life of Linda Greenlaw, the author, during a lobster fishing season. Living on a small island off the coast of Maine, the author allows us into her downeast life. We learn some great information on the lobster fishing industry, as well as the lifestyles of the residents of Isle Au Haut.

Some funny anecdotes and a glimpse into life off the coast of Maine make up this short, quick read, book. Being a resident of Maine, myself, I always like to read authors from here. I have yet to be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Okay but not exciting..........2006-07-05

I read this after I read F/V Black Sheep because it was also about lobster fishing in New England. It was entertaining and had some very funny moments but it wasn't especially exciting. I liked her stories about the strange characters who live on that island but when it was over I thought she seemed like a lonely person

                        2 out of 5 stars Barely a book.......2006-06-30

I don't get it. There is no story, just a meandering. While I was hoping to be drawn in to a vivid life of ocean hardship and island comforts, it is just kind of drab.

The pages are easy to turn, and she writes nicely. I realized half way through the book that it was going nowhere. I finished it anyway, hoping for some insight or revelation. There was none, except of course for the map that appears at the end, too lately revealed for it to serve it's function.

                                                    Book Description

Field flow fractionation (FFF) is an emerging separation technique, which has been proven successful in the analysis of pharmaceuticals, biotechnology products, polymers, soils, and foods, among others. In this book, Martin Schimpf joins forces with Karin Caldwell and J. Calvin Giddings, two of the primary developers of this technique, to bring you the first comprehensive, one-stop reference on the technique.

The results indicate that after FFF of natural colloids MALLS is applicable to retrieve independent and absolute particle sizes (RMS radius or radius of gyration) for the colloids fractionated. For the analysed samples of soil colloids the appropriate data processing in MALLS is the linear or second order ZIMM fitting method for particle sizes up to 500nm in diameter. This is in contrast to the MALLS analysis of latex beads, where the ZIMM fitting method produces reliable results only below ~100nm in diameter. The reason for the good results for the soil colloids can be found in the behaviour of the particle form factor P(@q) which was found to be linear function when plotted as Kc/R(@q) over sin^2(@q/2).

                                                            Description:
Results are described from the first application of high resolution ICPMS coupled to flow field-flow fractionation (FlFFF-HR ICPMS), for the elemental characterization of small colloidal material (1-50nm hydrodynamic diameter) in a natural freshwater sample. Detection limits for a 45mL preconcentrated sample were 200ngL^-^1 to 5@mgL^-^1 for major elements, 1-30ngL^-^1 for most of the first row transition elements and <1ngL^-^1 for rare earth elements. R.S.D. of the concentrations determined in five replicate measurements were less than 10% for 42 of the elements quantified. In total, 45 elements could be quantified, 15 more than were quantified in an earlier study performed with a quadrupole ICPMS. Direct on-channel preconcentration was used and the degree of preconcentration necessary was examined. The linearity between sample volume and calculated colloidal concentrations was good, but possible indications of sample losses were observed. Peak deconvolution analysis was carried out on some elements in order to obtain an estimate of the distribution of elements between organic carbon- and iron-rich colloids. Among the elements not previously studied, P, V and Ti were shown to associate strongly to iron-rich colloids, Br and I were exclusively bound to organic carbon colloids while As and Cd were equally distributed between the two. Sc corresponded to the pattern of lanthanides and Cr to the pattern of the other first row transition elements.

                                                              Description:
Membrane fouling has been associated with the size of solutes, i.e., macromolecules and colloids in membrane filtration. Colloidal fouling propensity was investigated in terms of transport characteristics by the thermodynamic transport model combined with concentration polarization and flow field-flow fractionation (flow FFF). Transport characteristics in membranes were focused on, especially nano-colloid fouling in UF membranes. Whey protein and 30 nm of latex microsphere suspensions were used as test solutions. Transport parameters were determined in terms of mass transfer coefficient (k), solute permeability (P"m), and reflection coefficient (@s) by non-linear estimation. The flow FFF provided a consistent explanation for the nano-colloid transport, depending on the physicochemical interactions between membrane and solute through the transport parameters determined from filtration tests. The second and third moments, variance and skewness were expected to be very useful quantitative information on the membrane fouling propensity of a certain solute.

It is found that the operational variables influencing the efficiency and resolution of the separation can be optimized and that the concept of a micro-TFFF is meaningful. A miniaturized TFFF channel was proposed and constructed. It has been demonstrated experimentally that micro-TFFF allows one to carry out high-performance separations under carefully chosen experimental conditions. This new technique is highly competitive in comparison with size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) of macromolecules with molar masses up to roughly one million gram per mole. However, the versatility of micro-TFFF is superior to SEC for macromolecules of ultra-high molar masses, as well as colloidal sub-micron, and micron-sized particles of synthetic, natural, or biological origin. The free choice of the carrier liquids without any modification of the separation system affords an advantage to micro-TFFF. The experimental implementation and application to polymer and particle analysis confirmed the potential of micro-TFFF.

The influence of ionic strength and mixing ratios of the charged units of the polyelectrolytes on the complex formation was evaluated. The diffusion coefficients and the hydrodynamic diameter distributions of the free and complexed polyelectrolytes were measured. In the absence of salt, the weight averaged hydrodynamic diameters were 48 and 28nm for PMOTAC and PEO-b-PMANa, respectively. In the presence of salt, the particles were smaller, with weight averaged hydrodynamic diameters of 44-45 and 8-10nm, respectively. In salt-free solution, at 1:1 mixing ratio of the charged monomer units of PMOTAC and PEO-b-PMANa, polydisperse particles with diameters of 2000-4000nm were formed. In the presence of 20, 80, and 160mM of sodium chloride, the 1:1 complexes were relatively monodisperse particles with weight averaged hydrodynamic diameters of 93, 124, and 120nm, respectively.

Large unilamellar vesicles (LUV, diameter 100nm) prepared by extrusion at 25^oC were used. Phospholipid vesicles (liposomes) were stored at +4 and -18^oC over an extended period of time. Extruded egg yolk phosphatidylcholine (EPC) particle diameters at peak maximum and mean measured by AsFlFFF were 101+/-3nm and 122+/-5nm, respectively. No significant change in diameter was observed after storage at +4^oC for about 5 months. When the storage period was extended to about 8 months (250 days) larger destabilized aggregates were formed (172 and 215nm at peak maximum and mean diameters, respectively). When EPC was stored at -18^oC, large particles with diameters of 700-800nm were formed as a result of dehydration, aggregation, and fusion processes. In the presence of calcium chloride, EPC alone did not form large aggregates. Addition of 20mol% of negatively charged phospholipids (PS, PA, PI, or PG) to 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine (POPC) vesicles increased the electrostatic interactions between calcium ion and the vesicles and large aggregates were formed. In the presence of cholesterol, large aggregates of about 250-350nm appeared during storage at +4 and -18^oC for more than 1 day. The effect of liposome storage temperature on phospholipid coatings applied in capillary electrophoresis (CE) was studied by measuring the electroosmotic flow (EOF). EPC coatings with and without cholesterol, PS, or calcium chloride, prepared from liposomes stored at +25, +4, and -18^oC, were studied at 25^oC. The performances of the coatings were further evaluated with three uncharged compounds. Only minor differences were observed between the same phospholipid coatings, showing that phospholipid coatings in CE are relatively insensitive to storage at +25, +4^oC or -18^oC.
