The working papers are a great addition to the text because they have charts for you to fill in when doing the exercises at the end of the chapter. It's nice to have the double entry journals layed out for you.

Despite how intimidating accounting can be for some students, this book really offers a lot. From the CD to the neat little transparencies in chapter 4, this book does give students a greater insight to accounting. Unfortunately, I feel that the book offers too much to students. Icons are all over the place in the book, examples that go nowhere, and page references for problems that actually don't help at all. You have to sift through the chapters yourself to find the right page.
If you have to buy it, buy it... But get all the add ons, they're great to have.

P.S. When in doubt, go to the website, they have great narrated powerpoint presentations on each chapter!

                  Book Description

Optimizing Human Capital with a Strategic Project Office explores the SPO's potential to transform an enterprise by making the most of people within an organization. This volume provides an exhaustive review of topics such as the hiring, retention, measurement, training, and professional development of knowledge workers in project management. This book's chapters summarize the latest thinking regarding these issues and offer a model of how the best aspirations of workers can become reality through the medium of the SPO. The authors explore the best practices of project-savvy organizations and offer detailed information on proven models for assessing and developing competency, building inspired teams, and creating a working environment in which motivation thrives. The book includes a set of model role descriptions for staffing the project office--on a divisional or enterprise level--based on original research by the authors. The book opens by focusing on the business case for reorganizing companies around the managing-by-projects model, the roles of executives in implementing project management change initiatives, and the nuts-and-bolts topics of project personnel management, such as competency, recruiting, and rewards. The final section reviews current developments and trends, identifying the "people management" issues that generate the greatest organizational changes. Appendices provide examples of tools for establishing project-friendly HR practices under the auspices of a Strategic Project Office.

2 out of 5 stars Not very impressive.......2007-03-03

I have to say that I was not very impressed with this book. I have seen a lot of PMO books. Some of them pretty good (books by Rollins or Letavec for example) as well as some that have been downright horrible (names withheld to protect the innocent). This one just sort of missed the mark for me... it had a nice focus on people and tried to link the value of the project office to organizational success (something I am strongly in favor of) but the book never really brought everything together for me. I tend to like practical handbooks that show me, "here's how you go do this" in addition to providing theories, strategies, and other such context. I didn't find the strategies compelling nor did I find the practical aspects well defined.

A dramatic pair of pictures opens this book: aerial shots of Fairview Gardens Farm, near Goleta, California, first in 1954, then in 1998. Once part of thousands of acres of farmland, Fairview Gardens is now entirely surrounded by tract homes, strip malls, and all the conveniences of modern suburban life. This 12.5-acre oasis exists only because Michael Ableman has steadfastly refused to let it be gobbled up by the relentless bulldozers. His story is funny, fierce, inspiring, and infuriating. His success, tempered by ample setbacks, will be of practical use to anybody seeking to preserve farmland from suburban sprawl. This powerful love story about a man and a place is especially moving because the land is not his: for most of the past 17 years, Ableman has been a tenant farmer at Fairview Gardens. Few people would put so much sweat and soul into borrowed land, yet to Ableman, ownership is irrelevant--it is the rich, beautiful land itself, and the sweet, slow food it produces for him, that matters. --Ann Lovejoy

                  5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-09-19

This book was more than I expected, well written, beautiful pictures. It is the second book I have gotten by this author. Plus it came to me quickly and in perfect condition. Thanks!

                  5 out of 5 stars A darn good book!.......2001-02-24

I live in a desert climate, so farming is something that interests me in this desolate place I live in. I really enjoyed this book because of the success story and the farming aspect of the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes farms.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books!.......1999-12-31

This book was an inspiration to read. It gives me hope that urban sprawl might be contained in some small parts of the world. It's also a good guide to organic farming and living, and getting past the "hippie" stereotype that organics still have. I'd highly recommend this book.

                  5 out of 5 stars a very personal journey.......1999-12-06

Reading Michael Ableman's book was like stumbling upon his personal journal. I could imagine it's dirt-stained, hand-written pages - the miscellaneous seed or wind-blown earthen particles stuck deep in the creases of the binding. This book is filled with earnest, intimate tales - the everyday woes and triumphs of a gentle farmer, side-by-side with the battle stories of a true community activist. It is his journey that I found so fascinating, so inspiring. Ableman's story is compelling because he has been on the good path and done the good work for a long time - more than 17 years. From the early days of setting up the produce stand on weekends at a local farmer's market, to lamenting a killing winter frost, he draws the reader into the drama. Ableman's intensely close relationship with the land is his reward for paying close attention to its needs. His goals were clear - to grow healthy food for local people in a way that respected the land's ability to sustain itself. He learned by doing, followed his intuition, and made tough decisions based on what was right, or what he believed to be right at the moment. This book offers its readers as much "food for thought" about life, as it does about farming!

5 out of 5 stars Enlightening, thought provoking........1998-07-01

I am not related to the author (like the previous reviewer). Loved this book. Couldn't put it down. I'm a long time organic gardener but I found this California farm story fascinating. As soon as I finished it my 18 year old daughter grabbed it and it doesn't look like I'll get it back soon. Two of her friends are in line to read it. Lovely photographs, too.

                    Book Description

The following topics are addressed: space astrometric missions, ground based optical techniques, very long baseline interferometric (VLBI) techniques, impact of these techniques on astrophysics and on geodynamics, and issues related to celestial and terrestrial reference frames.
In the area of space optical astrometry, the reduction of one year of data from the Hipparcos mission shows excellent results for more than 40,000 stars. Recent developments in ground-based optical astrometry are concentrated on CCB meridian circles and transit instruments. The VLBI technique is the most powerful method to determine the earth rotation parameters, nutation series, and baseline lengths. More accurate celestial and terrestrial reference frames are needed and recent achievements in this field are presented, for example FK5 catalogues and a comparison of VLA and Hipparcos positions.

                      Book Description

Photophysical and Photochemical Properties of Aromatic Compounds is the first book to collect and classify all available quantitative data on the photochemistry and luminescence of aromatic compounds. Compounds are classified by both spectral-luminescent (e.g., extinction coefficients, energies and lifetimes of lower excited states) and photochemical properties. In addition, all of the quantum yields available have been collected. The variety of photochemical reactions of aromatics is examined based on eight types of elementary monomolecular and bimolecular photochemical processes. Aromatic compounds are grouped into eight categories, and the book analyzes the possibilities of occurrence of all types of elementary photoprocesses.

                        Book Description

How does the brain work? After a century of research, we still lack a coherent view of how neurons process signals and control our activities. But as the field of computational neuroscience continues to evolve, we find that it provides a theoretical foundation and a set of technological approaches that can significantly enhance our understanding. Computational Neuroscience: A Comprehensive Approach provides a unified treatment of the mathematical theory of the nervous system and presents concrete examples demonstrating how computational techniques can illuminate difficult neuroscience problems. In chapters contributed by top researchers, the book introduces the basic mathematical concepts, then examines modeling at all levels, from single-channel and single neuron modeling to neuronal networks and system-level modeling. The emphasis is on models with close ties to experimental observations and data, and the authors review application of the models to systems such as olfactory bulbs, fly vision, and sensorymotor systems. Understanding the nature and limits of the strategies neural systems employ to process and transmit sensory information stands among the most exciting and difficult challenges faced by modern science. This book clearly shows how computational neuroscience has and will continue to help meet that challenge.

Winfield Scott And The Profession Of Arms is the true story of Winfield Scott (1786-1866), who is perhaps best known for his role in bringing professionalism to the U.S. Army during his long military career (1807-61). He served his duty as general in the War of 1812, commanded U.S. forces in the final campaign of their war with Mexico, and was the general in chief at the beginning of the Civil War. History professor emeritus Allan Peskin draws upon research in the National Archives to unearth a comprehensive portrait of General Scott as a visionary managerial officer, who anticipated drastic changes in technology and business principles for the military and adapted in response. An in-depth, balanced biography of a remarkable figure and his lasting legacy.

Although this is quite a thin book (a mere 211 pages), which i read over the course of a weekend, i was left with the feeling that it was much longer. It covers a lot of ground. It moves quickly through time and space, and at the end i realized i had traveled through many different landscapes:

                                  - the relationship between Max and his grandfather, Rocky (who in fact had the unspellable name of Yerachmiel)
                                  - the family dynamics while Max is growing up, where everybody is in everybody's business (and i thought my family was unique)
                                  - The American life of Lithuanian-Polish Orthodox Jewish immigrants in the early 20th century
                                  - Max in college in the 60s, with Vietnam as a backdrop
                                  - Max and his romantic life, Debby, etc
                                  - Joel Kerner and his terrible accident
                                  - Marriage, and kids
                                  - Debby's disease
                                  - The effects of Debby's absence on the children
                                  - Rocky's renaissance

                                  Among others!

This is a very well written memoir, and it makes me want to find other works by Max Apple. He was able to cover so much ground with such elegant flow, and it amazes me how the narrative was never hurried or incomplete.

That picture on the cover, with Rocky mixing dough, is worth almost all of the words of the book. To say he was spunky would be a disservice to Rocky. He was above convention, stubborn as a deaf bull, but adorable.

Although there were some "made-for-TV" moments (Rocky baking cookies, the final scene during the burial), i'd rather categorize them into the "life is cornier than fiction" section. Most of the time i marveled at the closeness this family had, plus i had to laugh at some of Rocky's antics.

                                  5 out of 5 stars A TOUCHING TRIBUTE AND A SPLENDID STORY.......2004-04-03

Here's a true story that'll make you laugh, cry, and rejoice that you're alive. Today, when dysfunctional families threaten to be the norm, this family functions solidly together despite disagreements and recriminations. Love doesn't conquer all, but it's the glue that holds life together just when it's falling apart.

Herman (Rocky) Goldstein is an aged Jewish baker, a tough, scrappy, comic curmudgeon who shares a garage apartment with his grandson, Max. After the death of Max's father, Max takes the 93-year-old grandfather to graduate school with him.

When Max meets Debby, an attractive 60s radical, Rocky does everything to break up the romance. After meeting Rocky in the off-campus apartment the two men share, Debby remarks, "Even if he's paying half the rent, you're getting a bad deal."

Max and Debby do marry (a ceremony that Rocky refuses to attend). They have two children and Debby contracts a fatal disease. Just as Max begins to crumble, his grandfather, now 103 years of age, arrives to love the family and show them how to survive.

Seldom has a more touching tribute been written. "Roommates" is an absolutely splendid story.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic and emotional!.......1999-06-09

I could not put in down, it held my attention. One of the best books I have ever read! It would have wonderful to have a relationship with my Grandfather like that. The Great-Grand Children will never forget him.

5 out of 5 stars Roommates & Gootie took me back to my childhood........1998-09-08

Reading Roommates; My Grandfather's Story & Gootie; My Grandmothers Story, took me back home to the same neighborhood and time frame. Max Apple & his sisters and I & my sisters, lived about 6 doors from each other and played toghther from time to time. I remember his sisters twin beds and wished they were mine. One of those men walking to and from American Seating was my father.I remember "two bit Sophie".What a hoot!Later my sister Betty would be Dr. Farber's office nurse for many years. As a nurse I also took care of Debby and on another occasion, her mother, at St. Mary's Hospital. American Bakery, Jack Remes, Steketee's,the grocery store around the corner etc all brought my early childhood back vividly . I also remember the faces of Gootie & Rocky. The picture of Gootie looks exactly like my "Busha".Anyone growing up in that neighborhood in Grand Rapids, MI the late 40's and 50's can go home again.
