Book Description
Ralph Moody was eight years old in 1906 when his family moved from New Hampshire to a Colorado ranch. Through his eyes we experience the pleasures and perils of ranching there early in the twentieth century. Auctions and roundups, family picnics, irrigation wars, tornadoes and wind storms give authentic color to Little Britches. So do adventures, wonderfully told, that equip Ralph to take his father's place when it becomes necessary.
Little Britches was the literary debut of Ralph Moody, who wrote about the adventures of his family in eight glorious books, all available as Bison Books.

Little House on the Prairie for Men!.......2007-04-19
As an avid reader of horror and fantasy, this was a bit different than my usual choice of reading materials. At my wife and kids' request I read this book and loved it! This book is a must read for fathers and sons. I plan on reading all of Ralph Moody's books and have just ordered "Man of the House".
great book.......2007-02-27
We read this book for our reading group. Everyone enjoyed it. A superb story of love, family, hard work and survival.
What a wonderful discovery!!.......2006-11-06
I don't know how I missed Ralph Moody and Little Britches before. I can't wait to read more by him. Fun, exciting, wholesome, page-turning stories. I love'm, my kids love'm and come to find out, my grandfather loved'm too. Don't know how to compare the book, almost like a boy Laura Ingalls, but different.
Teaching tool for those willing to learn.......2006-11-04
This book gave great insight into what being a parent really means. Life is not easy. This book shows that responsibility, trust, patience, love, and honesty are required. It gives great examples to show how to use everyday life as a teaching tool for your children as well as for yourself. The lessons contained in this book, if applied, could change the way you look at yourself, your children, and life in general.
A must for every family!.......2006-10-25
Ralph Moody's book Little Britches is a really good book for people of all ages. As you read the words he wrote you feel like you are actually on the ranch in 1906 w/Ralph. The punishments, jobs, weather and animals Ralph encounter are priceless as he learns a lesson from each. I recomend this biography for anyone who likes a good book about the old times!

Customer Reviews:
Wow! Awesome biography.......2006-04-18
This is a great true story for ages 6-105. A little bit of cowboy language but going to the park is far worse. Action, adventure, joy, hardship, love of family & friends,... it's all there. Very eye opening. I'm so glad audio versions are coming out so we can enjoy them together on long car trips or when sick in bed. Worth the money.

From award-winning science writer Barry Parker, the only book to consider chaos theory in all areas of astronomy.
Customer Reviews:
Cosmos Book Leaves Mere Confusion, Not Chaos in its Wake.......1997-07-29
As a caption to a photograph early in the book, Parker writes, "A field of stars. Some of them may be chaotic." To term an object "chaotic" is meaningless unless one specifies what behavior (its motion, its fluctuations in brightness) is displaying chaotic characteristics. This ambiguous and imprecise tone permeates the rest of the text, hindering a clear understanding of the sometimes counter-intuitive concepts of chaos.
_Chaos in the Cosmos_ aims to be a layperson's introduction to chaos, with applications to problems in planetary science, astrophysics and cosmology. Despite the careful attention Parker has paid to describing technical concepts in plain language, his explanations are not clearly constructed, and on several occasions include factual errors, contradictions and misunderstandings that lead me to guess he is not well-conversant on the subject himself.
Anyone who has read the fine work of James Gleick in his book, _Chaos_, will be disappointed with _Chaos in the Cosmos_. Readers already familiar with the history of chaos science and its basic concepts may find useful the discussion of recent research, and the particular focus on astronomical applications (though this is brief and confined to the last half of the book). Those who are new to the study of chaos will glean some knowledge from reading the initial chapters, but I do not recommend it as an introduction to the discipline, since the inaccurate and inefficient explanations are misleading to the novice.

Book Description
This book overviews methods for the synthesis of metal-containing monomers with various types of metal bonds to the organic moiety of the molecule, such as ionic, covalent, donor-acceptor, and others. Published data on homopolymerization, copolymerization, and graft polymerization of these monomers are generalized. Synthesis and Polymerization of Metal-Containing Monomers discusses features typical of the molecular and structural organization of the resulting metal-containing polymers, their properties and the associated major applications, such as catalytical and biological activity, electrophysical characteristics, and thermal resistance.

Book Description
Multivariate polysplines are a new mathematical technique that has arisen from a synthesis of approximation theory and the theory of partial differential equations. It is an invaluable means to interpolate practical data with smooth functions.
Multivariate polysplines have applications in the design of surfaces and "smoothing" that are essential in computer aided geometric design (CAGD and CAD/CAM systems), geophysics, magnetism, geodesy, geography, wavelet analysis and signal and image processing. In many cases involving practical data in these areas, polysplines are proving more effective than well-established methods, such as kKriging, radial basis functions, thin plate splines and minimum curvature.
Part 1 assumes no special knowledge of partial differential equations and is intended as a graduate level introduction to the topic
Part 2 develops the theory of cardinal Polysplines, which is a natural generalization of Schoenberg's beautiful one-dimensional theory of cardinal splines.
Part 3 constructs a wavelet analysis using cardinal Polysplines. The results parallel those found by Chui for the one-dimensional case.
Part 4 considers the ultimate generalization of Polysplines - on manifolds, for a wide class of higher-order elliptic operators and satisfying a Holladay variational property.
Customer Reviews:
utterly useless.......2006-09-25
A complete waste of money (and trees) for any scientist or engineer interested in applying spline theory to their work. Indecipherable and highly-esoteric work suitable only for a very narrow audience. One need only check the price of this book to see that it can't be given away. Nice binding though!

Advance praise for Heart of the Storm
"Col. Ed Fleming tells a story of true heroism about the constant dangers faced by the pilots and crews who fly the most versatile-and vulnerable-aircraft in the skies today."
-John Glenn, former U.S. senator, astronaut, and bestselling author of John Glenn: A Memoir
"To risk your life to save a stranger is the highest mark of a human being. Ed Fleming is such a man, and this book is a great read."
-Dr. Jerri Nielsen, author of the #1 New York Times bestselling Ice Bound
"Filled with suspense and emotion, Heart of the Storm reads like a thriller-but it's all true. Ed Fleming has led a dramatic and interesting life, and this book portrays it in living color."
-Robert K. Tanenbaum, New York Times bestselling author of Resolved and Absolute Rage
Customer Reviews:
As close to being there as you can get..........2007-06-22
An authentic, engrossing account of a life lived in a difficult profession. From his humble beginnings as a new pilot (all helicopter pilots start out humble, the machine won't let you begin any other way), Fleming walks you through the early events that shaped his character, and would stand him in good stead as he embarked upon a life of calculated risk taking. There are two rescues in the book that will literally have you on the edge of your seat, one as a young pilot and another as a seasoned pro. I don't recall reading anything that comes close in authentically describing how man and machine can literally fly into into the face of peril, to save the life of a stranger. Heroic acts are not always spontaneously undertaken by unlikely people, some individuals spend their lives risking their own safety for others. Fleming truly deserves the title Hero.
Good Story, well written.......2007-05-04
I enjoyed this account by someone "who's been there."
Col Fleming gives a detailed and interesting account of what rescues by the Air Force are all about. The author places us in the aircraft with him and relates the joys and frustrations of rescue work. I would liked to have seen a little more on the PJs actions, but I understand the focus was on the author's "adventures as a helicopter rescue pilot."
Kudos Col for the insight from a rescue pilot's perspective.
Gripping, real life drama.......2006-09-21
I read all manner of books but there is nothing quite so completely satisfying as reading a true-story page turner that reads like a novel. Heart of the Storm is just that. Utterly captivating and at the same time educational, the book reveals, in high speed drama, the life and experiences of a small group of helicopter rescue people most of us never have the misfortune of encountering but, but after reading this, may wish we could. Each chapter is prefaced with an account of the large scale events of the times which helps place us in the book, and is briefly anecdoted with personal insights and family life that make the journey Col. Edward Fleming takes us on all the more meaningful and poignant. I don't know why this book hasn't yet been made into a movie but I'd be willing to bet it will be. It most certainly should be.

A Real Story by a Real Warrior.......2005-04-21
A super story about real life heroes doing the daily business of protecting the nation both here and abroad. Col fleming tells it all as an oberver and a participant. His stories are not embellished for the reader, nor do they point to him as the central heroic figure. They do provide the reader with a look into a world that is boring and thrilling at the same time; deftly describing the tedium of daily squadron life as it gives way to the breakneck speed and physical demands of search and rescue over water.
This book is full of heroes... and a few malcontents, imcompetents and villains. He bravely steps up to describe the politics of the national guard. Where officers may be elevated for political reasons despite their shortcomings. His criticism is not couched in the whining of a man dissapointed by his leaders. It is a thoughtful observation of the things that go awry, even to the best of us. His determination to stay with his unit, then to move forward despite rejection, criticism and professional "second guessing" speak more about his character than the eagles on his shoulder or the ribbons on his chest.
Col Fleming reminds me of the ubiquitous "Old Sage" in every military unit. The Colonel or Master Sergeant who regailed there charges with the "old corps" stories of past glory and disappointment. These stories, often funny, sometimes tragic were tinged with morals and lessons to be learned and incorporated into the professional and personal lives of their young officers, NCOs and airmen. In an axiom that defines military men and women through time, the good ones learned there lessons from the Old Sage, the bad ones learned them the hard way.
Col Fleming has taken us all into his world and through his writing we come away with a deeper sense of gratitude and understanding for the people who stand in harm's way for us.
A Real Warrior sharing his world... an outstanding book
So Exciting It Reads Like the Best Fiction - but All True.......2004-06-07
In Heart of the Storm, Col. Fleming shows that he is as adept at writing about his lifetime of thrilling rescues as he was at performing them. What a career, and what a book! A work of fiction couldn't cover more high profile adventures - rescues he pulled off during the Perfect Storm, at the South Pole, in the Gulf War, just to scratch the surface. But it's not fiction. He really did it, risking his life to save perfect strangers more times than I could count. I don't have the patience to read many books, but this one wouldn't let me put it down.

Book Description
On Equal Footing began as an oral history project sponsored by the Institute for the Medical Humanities, which is located at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Over the course of three years, Antrece Baggett, instructor at Houston Community College, interviewed Mr. Mease about his role in the desegregation of Houston and about his life in general. What emerged was a portrait of a remarkable individual: An African-American man who grew up in an all-black coal mining town in Iowa, rose to the rank of captain in the segregated U.S. military during WWII, chose a career in public service, and wound up in Houston, where in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s he became an agent for peaceful desegregation in the major southern city. Quietly working with powerful white civic leaders, such as John T. Jones and Roy Hofheinz, and effectively neutralizing obstructionists, like police chief Herman Short, Mease joined the forces that allowed Houston to avoid the racial violence experienced by other U.S. cities at the time. Quentin Mease built the first black YMCA in Houston and served as executive secretary for twenty years. He was founding member and first president of the Houston Area Urban League, the first black member of the Downtown Rotary Club, and the first black person on the Hospital District Board, which he also chaired. Today, a hospital in Houston is named after Quentin Mease, and he continues to be an active community leader, chairing the Harris County Hospital District Foundation and sitting on the board of the Texas Medical Center. He is 91 years old.
