Used to Design Many Corporate Universities.......2005-05-31
This is the revised and updated edition of Jeanne Meister's classic 1994 work. Countless corporate universities (CUs) are now designed based on Meister's guidance. This is "must" reading if you plan to start or improve your own corporate university.
Meister emphasizes the strategic importance of the corporate university and its role as the "umbrella" for all organizational learning activities.
Meister gives very detailed guidance on how to design the CU, implement best practices, forge partnerships, and build a world-class work force.
I highly recommend it.

Corporate Universities.......2000-06-20
I found this book quite helpful to me in setting up a corporate university within my company. Meister's book was a great resource to see how the large companies have set up their universities. The general guidelines of "how to do it", gave me some insight as to how to go about setting one up for my company. Visiting the web sites of some of the 50 companies referenced, was also very helpful. A good resource/reference book.
Jeanne Meister hits the mark with Corporate Universities.......1999-01-19
Jeanne Meister's book on corporate universities is a review of the key success factors and motives in developing a high level corporate training organization. The majority of the information in the book is taken from Fortune 500 companies who are developing their own 'umbrella' learning organizations. The information was gathered through questionnaires, consulting, and trade shows held by Corporate University X-change, a company who publishing one of the leading industry magazines. The trend for corporate universities seems to be driven by two main factors:
1. Upper-management's need to build a flexible learning organization. A good example of this trend is illustrated in a Shell Oil study on changes in the firms appearing on the Fortune 500 list . This study showed that one-third of the companies listed on the Fortune 500 list in 1970 had vanished by 1983. In fact, the study estimated that the lifetime of the largest industrial firm was less than half the average lifetime of a person in an industrial society. The bright spot of this study was that those who survived 75 years or longer made a point of continually experimenting and exploring new businesses and creating new sources of growth.
2. Technologies that more effectively facilitate the collection and management of key information on the organizations intellectual capital.
I was impressed by the names and company references that this book contains. It appears as if the author has established relationships with these companies and makes the information seem more credible because it appears to be first hand and can be backed up by contacting the individual or company.

Sets the Industry Standard.......2006-01-26
Written for Training Professionals and Executives, this book will help you to start a corporate university and understand the relevant industry issues. In the world of Training and Development, this book is extremely well organized and insightful, well written, and the one book everyone seems to have read. Corporate Universities is written for a general audience and practical in orientation. Meister supplies the information and best practices you need to succeed. She provides detailed guidance on how to align your training to the business goals of your organization, develop learning alliances with local universities, use technology to transform learning from a just in case to a just in time model, effectively communicate the value of training to executives and turn training measurement into an active contributor to business strategy.
Very valuable resource.......1999-09-16
Companies seeking "quantum improvement" are usually so busy with change management, process reengineering, total quality, customer satisfaction, etc., that they either totally ignore or skimp on employee development. The book does an excellent job of providing the reader with everything from background material to corporate university models to curriculum issues. As a consultant to a Fortune 500 company involved in creating a sustained learning initiative, I found this book most valuable. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me - adamleft@webspan.net.
Book provides an excellent views about the corporate univ........1999-06-14
Coming era is very rightly termed as the era of globlisation and competitiveness. The book very clearly explains about the concept of corporate university in this context.

Book Description
The field of Order and Chaos had a remarkable expansion in the last 50 years. The main reason was the use of computers, and the development of new theoretical methods that we call now 'the theory of chaos'. The author describes this fascinating period in a relaxed and sometimes humorous autobiographical way. He relates his interactions with many people in dynamical astronomy and he quotes several anecdotes from these interactions. He refers also to his experiences when he served in various international positions, such as general secretary of the IAU and chairman of the journal
Astronomy and Astrophysics. In recent years the theory of chaos has been extended to new areas, like relativity, cosmology and quantum mechanics and it continues expanding in almost all branches of physics. The book describes many important ideas in this field in a simple way. It refers also to problems of more general interest, like writing papers and giving lectures and the interaction of authors and referees. Finally it gives some useful prospects for the future of dynamical astronomy and related fields.

There are much better Graph Theory Books.......2007-08-22
The errors in this text are unfortunate, and the presentation is not engaging. I did find that "A First look at Graph Theory" by Clark and Holton was useful and "Introduction to Graph Theory" by Chartrand and Zhang, was very readable.
Affordable but not accurate.......2002-09-14
It's nice to have an affordable math book, and this one does give a good introduction to graph theory. Unfortunately, there are also mistakes (some of which REALLY should have been caught in proofreading) which could confuse someone attempting to learn graph theory from this book. (These are both in the text and in the answers provided for the problems, such as giving the wrong number for the length of a path)

Book Description
This introduction to discrete mathematics is aimed primarily at undergraduates in mathematics and computer science at the freshmen and sophomore levels. The text has a distinctly applied orientation and begins with a survey of number systems and elementary set theory. Included are discussions of scientific notation and the representation of numbers in computers. Lists are presented as an example of data structures. An introduction to counting includes the Binomial Theorem and mathematical induction, which serves as a starting point for a brief study of recursion. The basics of probability theory are then covered. Graph study is discussed, including Euler and Hamilton cycles and trees. This is a vehicle for some easy proofs, as well as serving as another example of a data structure. Matrices and vectors are then defined. The book concludes with an introduction to cryptography, including the RSA cryptosystem, together with the necessary elementary number theory, e.g., Euclidean algorithm, Fermat's Little Theorem. Good examples occur throughout. At the end of every section there are two problem sets of equal difficulty. However, solutions are only given to the first set. References and index conclude the work. A math course at the college level is required to handle this text. College algebra would be the most helpful.

Vincent Roth, A Life in Guyana, Volume 2: The Later Years, 1923-1935
ASIN: 1900715546 |
Book Description
From an early age, Vincent Roth kept a detailed account of his experiences, often illustrated with sketches and later by watercolors. It was from these handwritten journals that his son-in-law edited this book. The first volume covers his early yeas as a child abandoned to relatives in France, Scotland, and London. It also covers his reuniting at the age of 12 with his father and stepmother in Australia, his arrival in British Guyana, and the first 15 years of his work in the interior.
Customer Reviews:
A life in the Guyana of the Twenties.......2007-09-24
I was about nine when my father took me to the zoo of the Botanical Gardens in Georgetown, capital of the then British Guiana. Near the entrance and the bullocks' paddock stood a slim, grey-haired man who my father told me was "my old friend Vincent Roth", the founder of the Zoo. My father told me that he had worked with Roth when, a quarter of a century previously in the late 1920s, they had been surveyors in the Bush, also known as "the interior". Born in Australia in 1889 and arriving in B.G. at the age of 18, Roth was the only son of W.E. Roth, Protector of Aboriginals in north-eastern Australia. Vincent Roth had a succession of jobs: newspaper reporter, land surveyor, mining expert, geologist, district administrator, manager of a coffee and rubber estate.
Described by Arthur and Elma Seymour in their Dictionary of Guyanese Biography as "one of the great facilitators of culture", Roth eventually wrote and had published several books on British Guiana, and around 1964, when he and his wife left Georgetown to live in Barbados, he began to write his memoirs, based on journals kept up to 1935. Unfortunately, he was only able to elaborate from these his life in Queensland, Australia, before he became too frail to carry on. It was left to his son-in-law, Michael Bennett, to edit the journals and bring the memoirs up to the time of Roth's resignation from Government service in 1936. The result, despite a number of typos, is highly readable and full of information about the Guyana and especially, the interior, of those days. Standard fare in the Bush was salt pork (hence the word `porknocker') but there was - apart from the abundant fauna - a plethora of fish, as well as such delicacies as the maam bird and labba pepperpot. Bush lore there is aplenty, such as how to split a 15-ton boulder (keep a fire going under it for a few days then tackle it with a sledgehammer) and many beautiful images, as that of a swarm of pale yellow butterflies of well-nigh a quarter of a mile wide fluttering westwards that Roth says must have been between 40 and fifty miles in length. There is little scandal or sensationalism, for Roth was after all a Victorian and in fact writes that he generally tried to steer a course that would gives as little offence as possible to old friends and acquaintances. However, the astute reader will gain much of the information that has been left out. No account of life in Guyana would be complete without the abundant humour and Obeah (a form of magic known colloquially as `jumbi') stories to be found there, and there is some of both in these books. An Obeah man, in front of the local parson, challenges a villager to pick up the little stick that he has thrown to the ground if he doesn't believe in Obeah. The villager is adamant that he does not beieve in Obeah, but says that he will not pick up the stick. Roth, who comes across as a man with few illusions, himself has a story to tell that will raise the hair on the back of your neck.
Book Description
The question of why Jack Ruby killed Lee Harvey Oswald was the central issue of his trial by Judge Joe B. Brown, Sr. With compelling immediacy and exhaustive detail, the judge’s memoir is a vital contribution to the quintessential murder mystery of the 20th century. Here for the first time, we get to know what really went on in Ruby’s trial and in his mind. Judge Brown had access to previously unpublished facts involved in the “trial of the century”, as it was called. His memoir has been combined with the Warren Commission interrogation of Ruby and with Ruby’ polygraph conducted by the F.B.I., accompanied by enlightening psychological commentary. With a selection of previously unpublished photographs, this is a brilliant, illuminating new view of the event that has dominated the consciousness of the American public as no other ever has.
Customer Reviews:
Finally we know the truth about Jack Ruby!.......2002-01-24
No serious reader who is interested in the circumstances of the assassination of John Kennedy and the subsequent murder of his assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, should miss this book which provides valuable insight into the motives of Oswald's killer, Jack Ruby, through the eyes of the trial judge; the statements made by Jack Ruby to the Warren Commission and during the course of Ruby's FBI polygraph examination.
Many readers will recall the hysteria which was created by these two murders which occurred in Dallas within 48 hours. Speculation immediately arose and persists today whether Oswald was the sole assassin and whether Jack Ruby killed Oswald to silence him, thereby protecting Oswald's alleged accomplices. There was also speculation that Oswald was the tool of a foreign government and/or whether Ruby was hired by those same interests to silence Oswald.
A reading of the Ruby interrogation conducted by Chief Justice Warren and former President Gerald Ford provides the reader with valuable clues to Ruby's motivations. Ruby's testimony appears to be somewhat self-serving, but his insistence on a polygraph to prove his truthfulness is noteworthy and the results are very interesting.
The editor drew on her vast research and experiences as a Dallas psychologist to provide the reader with the necessary background regarding the mood of Dallas and in the final analysis, that mood was the key element resulting in the appellate court reversal of the Ruby conviction.
